E.J. Viso Claims Fast Friday F.E. Harding Fastest Lap Award at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as Weather Halts Track Activities

INDIANAPOLIS (May 17, 2013) – Andretti Autosport driver E.J. Viso, who has shown great speed throughout practice for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, was at the top of the speed charts as severe thunderstorms blew in and canceled the remainder of the day’s on-track activities.

Viso circled the famed 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway at 229.537 m.p.h. falling just short of the expected 230 m.p.h. as Team Chevy drivers practiced for the first time with the increased qualifying boost in their Chevrolet IndyCar V6 twin turbo charged engines. But, as a result of the fastest lap of Fast Friday, the traditional name for the final day of practice before qualifying, Viso was awarded the $10,000 F.E. Harding Fastest Lap Award.

Chevy drivers Marco Andretti, Carlos Munoz, Will Power and J.R. Hildebrand posted top-five fastest speeds. While Oriol Servia, A.J. Allmendinger and Townsend Bell were solidly in the top-10 on the charts as the session ended with just under three hours left to practice.

After a morning practice session from 8:00 a.m. to 10 a.m, qualifying is set for tomorrow, Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. when, in addition to the pole sitter being crowned; the fastest 24 cars and drivers locked into the field. NBC Sports Network will broadcast pole qualifying live from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and again from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (Verizon FiOS 90/590, DirecTV 220, DISH 159 and AT&T UVerse 640). In addition, qualifying will be broadcast by the IMS Radio Network, including on Sirius and XM Channels 211 and www.indycar.com.

CHEVROLET DRIVER QUOTES – PRACTICE DAY SIX:

E.J. VISO, NO. 5 TEAM VENEZUELA PDVSA CITGO ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT HVM CHEVROLET: TURNED FASTEST LAP ON FAST FRIDAY AT 229.527 M.P.H.: WHAT NUMBER DO YOU THINK YOU COULD HAVE TURNED WITHOUT A TOW? “It is tough to say because we went little-by-little; step-by-step trimming the car until the point, I believe, that a realistic time was in the high 227s to low 228s I guess. But, it is tough to make that call. There are so many factors in play. When we are running all week, we really won’t know until the factors are the same for everyone.

ON SATURDAY MORNING PRE-QUALIFYING PRACTICE; ARE YOU GOING OUT? “Well, I don’t think so so far, but with the lack of testing today, that might be a shot we are going to take. There are a few other items we had planned on testing today, and we couldn’t, so, we still haven’t made that call.”

HOW DOES THE THREAT OF RAIN IMPACT DECISIONS MADE ON QUALIFYING DAY? “I think they car that we have evolved from the team from last year it has been really heading to the right direction every day we’ve been on the track. We’ve been testing a number of pieces on the car. I think as of today, we have a strong car than we originally started the week with, It is all about finding as much mechanical grip as possible so that when it comes to the time to trim it, you should be in a good position if you did your homework.”

WOULD YOU SAY THAT ONE OF THE FIVE ANDRETTI CARS RIGHT NOW IS A FAVORITE TO WIN THE POLE? “I think the same as Marco. I think we have a strong team, and we will definitely have a good shot for it. But, the Penske guys have showed that they are strong. Helio (Castroneves) didn’t I think put everything he had in his run before the rain. Will (Power) was fast. A.J. (Allmendinger) was the very first car to go out on track, and he was not totally trimmed, and he was very competitive. Those guys are also doing their homework, and that is what we are here for. It is fun; it is a great month, and the more competitive it is is better for the Series. Better for the teams; better for everyone. It’s really what we like.”

DO YOU LIKE THE FAST NINE QUALIFYING PROCEDURE HERE? “I think it is tough to make a call. To be honest, probably have more of a European mentality. I would like to just come here, test one day, qualify and go. But, on the other hand, I understand that this is part of history, and it is a unique race. Everything is unique. It is part of the tradition is sticking with it. So far it’s been fun. I think because of procedure it takes, there is a lot of strategy played behind. Saving tires; saving miles; working with the miles; all these things always add another factor. That was probably more my thoughts my first years in IndyCar, but now I am really enjoying this tradition.”

MARCO ANDRETTI, NO. 25 RC COLA ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET: ON TODAY’S PRACTICE SPEEDS INCREASING TO 229 M.P.H. PLUS: “I reckon we would have been over 230 if we had had a full day. But, obviously those are tow laps. I think as a team, we are quite comfortable with our speeds. But obviously tomorrow is going to be another day, and it’s just going to come down to having a good balance.”

ON SATURDAY MORNING PRE-QUALIFYING PRACTICE: “I’ll be in my bed tomorrow morning. You are exactly right, you don’t learn a lot. In fact, you can fool yourself. I think we are close enough on the last couple of runs, that we can just kind of run it in qualifying. We aren’t going out at all.”

HOW DOES THE THREAT OF RAIN IMPACT DECISIONS MADE ON QUALIFYING DAY?
“You probably just don’t want to be as conservative on your first run, because that could be the pole run if there is no top-nine shootout. I would just go for it on the first run.”

WOULD YOU SAY THAT ONE OF THE FIVE ANDRETTI CARS RIGHT NOW IS A FAVORITE TO WIN THE POLE? “Oh, I don’t know. (Will) Power put up some good laps. It is just going to take a good balance. I think there is five of us in the running for the pole, but as far as favorites, there is going to be a lot of factors tomorrow. Hopefully you are on the good end of that. They are drawing numbers today, so that will play a factor as well.”

DO YOU LIKE THE FAST NINE QUALIFYING PROCEDURE HERE? “That part of it should be up to the fan. If they think it is more interesting, which it has to be – I mean it is definitely fun from our seat. But, honestly I think that part should be up to the fans.”

GRAHAM RAHAL BRANCHED OUT AND DROVE FOR OTHER TEAMS BESIDES HIS FATHER. HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF THAT? WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OR DISADVANTAGES? “The advantages are if you are winning with your Dad, but if you’re not (LAUGHS) it could be that the perception is that you only have the ride for that reason. That’s the situation anywhere you are. You have to perform. I think the best scenario is to win with your father. To win with anybody is fun, but obviously I think this is a championship team. I think we’ve rolled off very strong as a team, all five of us.”

CARLOS MUÑOZ, NO. 26 UNISTRAW ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET: ON TODAY’S PRACTICE: "Today was a short day due to weather, but we wanted to get through our qualifying simulations during our afternoon run. We had to get through our runs pretty fast, but I'm really happy with how they went. I think we have a strong car going into qualifying tomorrow. The No. 26 Unistraw Chevy has been running well all week, so I'm looking forward to doing well. I'm really excited going into my first qualifying run for the Indy 500; it's a dream come true. Ever since I was small, I wanted to be in this race. I remember watching (Juan Pablo) Montoya win the Indianapolis 500 in 2000. This is a special race for me; I'm going to give everything I have tomorrow."
JR HILDEBRAND, NO. 4 NATIONAL GUARD PANTHER RACING CHEVROLET: “We had a pretty good day in the National Guard Chevy. We’d still like to find some more speed in our car, but overall we feel pretty confident that the cars are quick. Frankly I’m disappointed that all the cars aren’t going faster, but it’s nice to see the speeds increase for the weekend. But we’re excited about Pole Day tomorrow and we’ll see where we stand.”

TOWNSEND BELL, NO. 60 SUNOCO “TURBO” PANTHER RACING CHEVROLET: "It was another good day for the Panther team. The balance is good on the car and we got to do some qualifying simulation run there right at the end before the rain came. We raced out there and just barely made it, but we did it and we're really happy with things. The No. 60 Sunoco ‘Turbo’ car just feels great and I'm excited to go qualify tomorrow."

ORIOL SERVIA, NO. 22 MECUM AUCTIONS PANTHER DREYER AND REINBOLD RACING CHEVROLET: ON TODAY’S PRACTICE: "Seems like every day we keep improving what was already a good car, so no complaints here! Today was a perfect Fast Friday before an even faster Saturday!"

JAMES HINCHCLIFFE, NO. 27 GODADDY ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET: ON TODAYS PRACTICE: "I think the weird thing about Indy is we have ten times more practice time than anywhere else, yet you always wish you had a little bit more to make it that little bit better. I think it’s just a function of a bunch of drivers and a bunch of engineers who are perfectionists and are always striving to make it a little better, but I think we can be pretty pleased with how things have gone. Obviously having team cars up thereall but one daybodes well. Qualifying is definitely gonna be tough, there’s a lot of quick cars, you know, finding that right level of downforce that takes enough drag off but doesn’t leave you sliding all over the place and scrubbing speed is gonna be key and it would have been nice to have a run or two more to really nail that down. As a team I think we’re confident and it’s gonna be tough, because, like I said, there’s a lot of fast cars that are gonna be going for that fast nine, hopefully we can get there, and get the GoDaddy car in a good position for the start of the race."

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STARTING POSITION VERSUS THE QUALITY OF THE RACE CAR:"It’s Sunday that everybody cares about. Dario (Franchitti) proved last year that qualifying is not the be-and all-end – he qualifying 17th; he even got hit in pit lane and fell right to the back, but he had a good race car and got his way back up to the front. So, it’s definitely important to focus on the race car. What’s so tricky about (IMS) is it’s so sensitive to different weather conditions, so if you’re working on your race car throughout the entire week and you actually see a variety of different conditions, that’s good. Whatever comes around on race day, you’ll at least have a little bit of an understanding of what the car and track might do."

RYAN HUNTER-REAY, NO. 1 DHL ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET: ON TODAY’S PRACTICE: "We feel pretty good overall – still have some work to do, but hopefully the rain will hold off tomorrow and we’ll get a shot at showing what we have. Andretti Autosport as a whole is competing for the front row again. But the race is really what counts, we need to be in the right position for the last 50 laps... and leading on (lap) 200."

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET: ON TODAY’S PRACTICE: “It’s hard to have a good idea where everyone is at for speed right now. I saw some people get in some legitimate ‘no tow’ laps. There are some good cars that I don’t think got a ‘no tow’ lap too. It’s very difficult to predict anything right now. I think the pole will be in the high 227 or low 228 for four laps. I have a good idea of what I think we can run on Saturday, but I’m not sure what everyone else can do. Of course, weather will be a big component on how qualifying plays out. Until everyone goes out in qualifying, you really don’t know how good you are with your car. It’s really fun for the next two days. It’s a lot of pressure too. There is more pressure to qualifying for me than the race. I love running fast around here. Having the turbo boost turned up for the Chevy is awesome. “

SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS, NO. 7 MCAFEE DRAGON RACING CHEVROLET: ON TODAY’S PRACTICE: "A short day, but overall, pretty decent. I think we got a fairly acceptable speed out of the car. Hopefully the McAfee Variety #7 Chevrolet is going to perform the way we would like it to tomorrow. It has been consistent enough throughout yesterday and today that we feel fairly comfortable. Now that is has rained and tomorrow there is a possibility of some more weather coming, it might be a bit of a nerve wrecking day. Overall we just want to put it in the field tomorrow and make sure that we're in pretty good shape and then focus one last time on the race car to make sure we've got what we need."

SEBASTIAN SAAVEDRA, NO. 6 TRUECAR DRAGON RACING CHEVROLET: ON TODAY’S PRACTICE: “It was not the most productive day for us but we were actually thinking it was going to be this way. Our main goal for today was to increase the mileage in the new Chevy powered engine for qualifying day, which we did. Unfortunately the rain cut our plans for a qualifying stimulation but having my teammate, Sebastian (Bourdais), where he is on the charts gives me a lot of confidence going into tomorrow. We've had a great team effort and we just need to continue in the same direction as we've been working throughout the weekend."
