Cisse return may be only hope for NUFC
The Senegalese striker has missed nearly half of the season for Newcastle, but may just be the key to keeping the club in the Premier League
There is a lot of negativity surrounding Newcastle United and their prospects for avoiding relegation.  This is for good reason as the team have lost 8 matches in a row and are facing yet another match with two of their six senior squad defenders suspended and a further two injured.  It's easy to get caught up in this.  I know I have.  If we take a step back and take a more forest view than tree view, there just might be hope.
Newcastle United have not won a match since February 28, with the first match of the current losing streak falling on March 4, the 1-0 loss to Manchester United.  That one particular loss doesn't necessarily weigh particularly heavily one way or the other.  We lose to the Red Devils all the time.  The loss that weighed most heavily was a sub-loss, if you will, from that Man U match.  You may recall that this was the match that saw Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans receive matching long-term bans for spitting at each other.
Since Cisse's suspension, Newcastle United have only scored 5 times in their 8 matches since and have been shut out in four of those matches.  We have known for some time that Emmanuel Riviere is severely lacking in his quest to be even a passable Premier League striker.  We have known that Working Class John Carver™ is not equipped to use Ayoze Perez to the best possible effect and we further know that Ayoze Perez, for all of the flashes he has shown this season, is a step or two away from being that level of Premier League contributor.  Of course we were going to struggle to score.
Papiss Cisse is a competent Premier League striker at worst and a blazing talent at his brightest.  The truth with him certainly lies somewhere between his first half season when seemingly every touch he had of the ball would fly into the net, no matter where that touch was on the pitch and the months in which he seemingly couldn't buy a goal.  This year's returns suggest that he lies somewhere on the better end of that scale than the worse.  His 11 goals in 19 appearances still see him tied for the seventh-highest tally in the Premier League (somewhere around 11th if you're counting individual goal scorers) even though he has missed nearly half of the season due to this latest suspension, injuries and the Africa Cup of Nations which somehow inexplicably seems to be held 6 times every year.
During his suspension, Papiss Cisse has had a screw removed from his kneecap, an injury that was said to be having a negative effect on his ability to play freely.  It is the reason (so it is said now) that Alan Pardew was using Cisse strictly as a substitute early in the season.  There is a lot of doom-saying regarding Cisse's possible return this season – John Carver has said the Senegalese may not return this season – but he has returned to training and has done some running with the training staff.  Carver has also been quoted as saying he may have to employ the striker in what amounts to the same way as Pardew had done, which may just be enough if the club can figure out how to defend a set piece well enough to give him a chance to steal a late point or victory in the grandest of Pardew traditions.
Help us, Papiss Demba Cisse.  You're our only hope.

Carver At His Wit's End. Is This the Last Straw?

Working Class John Carver™ removes his filter after the loss to Leicester, equaling his squad’s low discipline levels. Could this be the end of the road for Carver?

I have been watching Newcastle United for the good part of 20 years. In all my time, including the last relegation season, today’s performance is the worst I have seen. Their inability to mark on set pieces was greatly exposed, our midfield did not play as a unit, and we did not convert on the chances we did have (I’m looking at you, Riviere).

Coming Home Newcastle

Most importantly, the blatant lack of discipline also reared its ugly head loud and proud. Mike Williamson was sent off on two yellows, the second an appalling tackle out of bounds sending Jamie Vardy clattering into a camera at midfield. Darryl Janmaat also got in on the fun, accumulating his second yellow card on a clumsy challenge in injury time. As appalling this was, the lack of discipline and professionalism got worse after the match. The BBC’s interview with John Carver can be seen here.
John Carver has been clearly frustrated through this losing streak. He hit his wit’s end and completely went off on the squad. In the post-match press conference, he called the entire squad, save Jack Colback, of playing with no determination and not coming to fight. He pointed the finger at the squad for not listening to him after watching Leicester midweek against Chelsea. If these statements weren’t bad enough, he even accused Mike Williamson of purposely getting sent off!
My thoughts about John Carver have not been positive since his appointment. As time has progressed, the disciplinary issues–Cisse’s spitting, Coloccini’s straight red, Sissoko’s sending off, and now today–have been glaring proof that Carver does not have any respect in the dressing room. Carver calling the players out for not listening to him show that the level respect is absolute zero.
I suspect now is the time Mike Ashley & Co. will hit the panic button and try to right the ship clear of relegation. I would not be surprised to see Carver sacked come Monday morning. Whether or not they appoint a full-time manager or leave U-21 coach Peter Beardsley is beyond me.
Whatever they do, I hope that it is not too late. Relegation twice in 5 years is not the record this great club deserves.

The Football Association has confirmed that Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse and Manchester United defender Jonny Evans have been banned for spitting.

Evans has been hit with a six-game ban for the incident which occurred in United's 1-0 midweek win at Newcastle, and saw Evans spit at Cisse before the striker retaliated with a spit of his own.
Cisse admitted the FA charge and incurred a seven-game ban due to a previous suspension this season.

Jonny Evans: Man Utd defender faces six-game ban over 'spitting' row

Jonny Evans could be suspended for six Manchester United games if he is found guilty of spitting at Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse. The Football Association is to launch an investigation into the alleged incident, with disciplinary chiefs awaiting match referee Anthony Taylor’s report while at the same time reviewing video footage from Wednesday night’s game. Taylor, though, is unlikely to have seen Evans and Cisse’s behaviour, since he did not book either player after the flashpoint. Cisse could also face action if he is deemed to have committed the same offence. Evans could miss a decisive period for United if the FA find suspend him. Video loading Players sent off under Law 12 (3) states: "A Player who is dismissed from the Field of Play for spitting at an opponent or any other person, whether he has previously been cautioned in the match or not, will be suspended automatically from all Non-First Team matches commencing on the 14th day following the match in which he was sent off until such time as his Club has completed its next six matches in approved Competitions." Jonny Evans: Manchester United defender charged by FA for spitting

Jonny Evans and Papiss Cisse have both been charged by the Football Association for spitting at each other. Manchester United defender Evans has denied spitting at Cisse during the Reds’ 1-0 win at Newcastle on Wednesday night, however Cisse has apologised for spitting at the Northern Irishman. The FA claim Evans broke Rule E1[a] in that in or around the 38th minute of the game he and Cisse spat at each other. Because referee Anthony Taylor did not see Evans and Cisse’s flashpoint, the FA have asked a three-man panel to review the footage. Both players have until 6pm on Friday 6 March 2015 to respond to the charge. Louis van Gaal has defended Evans and doesn’t believe he intended to spit at Cisse. Video loading “As I’ve said in last night’s press conference, Jonny was not aware that he was spitting. It’s a natural thing for a human being, it wasn’t his intention. “I cannot imagine that Jonny Evans could do something like that, and he’s also said that. I believe him, so the matter is done. I think the FA is very wise.” VIEW GALLERY Source: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/
