Top five African countries at Rio 2016 Olympics

5.Algeria. The nation managed two silver medals at this year's Games. Both came from Taoufik Makhloufi, who came second in both the men's 800 and 1,500 meters finals.

4. Cote d'Ivoire made history at this year's Olympics with the arrival of the country's first ever gold medal. Cheikh Salah Junior Cisse's gold in the men's 80 kg taekwondo finals, coupled with Ruth Marie Christelle Gbagbi's bronze in the women's 67 kg category saw the West African nation finish the highest in its history - fourth in Africa.

3. Ethiopia. The East African long-distance heavyweights of Ethiopia may not have enjoyed the best of Olympics this year, but can take pride in the way in which their one gold medal was won. Almaz Ayana's incredible record-breaking run in the 10,000m led to the country's one gold, but a further 2 silver and 5 bronze medals left Ethiopia with a totof of eight.

4. South Africa will count Rio 2016 as a successful outing after capturing 10 medals in total, the third time out of 19 Games they have done so. The gold hunt was led by a dominance of the 800m where Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya dominated. Six silver and two bronze mean the Rainbow Nation finished second in Africa overall.

1. Kenya. The East Africans may have won more medals overall in London, but took home just two gold on that occasion. This time round, a haul of six gold, six silver and one bronze meant 13 medals in total, but good enough to finish top of the continent and 15th overall, globally. That's enough to take top spot on our list this week.

MAMADOU KELLY AND BAN KAI NA ANNOUNCE 2016 U.S. TOUR
Mali's Master Guitarist Returns to American Stages in July and August

MAMADOU KELLY may be one of contemporary African music’s best kept secrets. A guitar prodigy from Niafunke in the heartland of Mali's Niger River Delta, Mamadou made his bones accompanying greats like Ali Farka Toure and Afel Boucum. Today he is an undisputed master of Malian blues and leads his own band of musical heavyweights, BAN KAI NA.

Ban Kai Na features colleagues from both Ali Farka Toure's and Afel Boucom’s bands. Calabash player "Hama" Sankare can be heard on many of Ali Farka Toure’s classic albums, from 1994’s Talking Timbuktu all the up to 2006’s Savane, and Brehima ”Youro” Cisse’s djourkel (a monochord “mandolin”) can be heard alongside Mamadou himself on Savane. These guys also make up Alkibar, the band that accompanies Afel Bocoum. This core of veterans is rounded out by the gifted Baba Traore on bass and Ibrahim Nabo on guitar.

Together they keep the faith of Toure’s legacy and share his commitment to keeping the music contemporary. On this tour they are scheduled to performing or recording with such diverse talents as reggae artists Soul Syndicate, slide guitar genius Cindy Cashdollar, young indie rockers Last Good Tooth and jazz keyboardist John Medeski, among others.

Veterans of Mali’s storied Festival au Désert — where Mamadou and his colleagues have made multiple appearances — Mamadou Kelly and Ban Kai Na last toured North America in 2013, as part of the Festival au Désert - Caravan for Peace Tour. With two critically acclaimed albums under their belt, Mamadou Kelly brings his Sahelian soul to U.S. stages this summer.

Mamadou’s ascent as a solo artist has been rapid. He released his critically-acclaimed solo debut, ADIBAR, in 2013. World Music Central praised the album as “outstanding”, while Jazz Weekly hailed it as “The real roots of American blues and jazz”. Kelly and Ban Kai Na continued to build on their success with Djamila, their second album released in October 2015. DJAMILA was named Top of the World by Songlines Magazine #112, where Mark Sinnock called Mamadou an "incredibly accomplished guitarist ... a fine singer,” and hailed Djamila as “profoundly moving music". While Afropop Worldwide’s Banning Eyre wrote: “Soulful grooves, brilliant playing and arranging, and a vibe that just won’t let go”

Now Kelly offers American audiences a rare opportunity to catch this legend-in-the-making live with a major U.S. tour in July and August, with stops at Joe’s Pub in NYC, the Echoplex in LA, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and 16 other venues in between. Full tour itinerary below and on Kelly's facebook events page. https://www.facebook.com/MamadouKellyBanKaiNa/events

This Spring, Kelly has been performing in Europe and Morocco with Afel Bocoum, and he’s anxious to stretch out with his own band. "All of us are excited to be coming again to America to perform. I have only one request for myself: A seat on the plane that has enough room for my long legs!"

The History of Soninke (Serahule) and Culture

"Please see below..., there are some pictures of Ancient Ghana's..."!

History & Origins:
There is today much speculation about the origins of theSerahule ethnic group as there is with many groups in Western Sudan. The first theory is that they originated from the ancient Songhai Empire and were supporters of the Sunni royal family who were exiled in 1493 by Askia Mohammed. Indeed Soninke means "followers of Sunni or people from land of Sonni".
The Soninke (also called Sarakole, Seraculeh, or'Serahuli, and who include subgroups such as the Maraka and the Wangara) are a Mandé people who descend from the Bafour and are closely related to the Imraguen of Mauritania. They were the founders of the ancient empire of Ghana c. 750-1240 CE).

After contact with Muslim Almoravid traders from the north around 1066, the Soninke nobles of neighboring Takrur embraced Islam, being among the earliest sub-Saharan ethnic groups to follow the teachings of Muhammad. The Ghana empire dispersed, resulting in a diaspora which today finds Soninkes in Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau. Among this diaspora were famous traders known as the Wangara who spread further afield from traditionally Mande areas, hence the term "Wangara" is used today in modern Ghana and Burkina Faso to describe the Soninke populations present in urban cities and towns. Today the Soninke number around 1million. They speak the Soninke language, a Mande language.
History
Oral tradition on the fall of the Ghana Empire, The Soninke share a very conservative culture, inherited by the structural social organization from their forefather founders of the empire of Ghana. This empire constitutes the major part of the Soninke history and lifestyle.

The first ruler of this empire was said to be Dingha Cisse, who it is said had a semi-divine status. He came with his people from "the East", either Mali or possibly what is modern day Senegal, and created a coalition against the neighboring tribes and “nomadic raiders”. Some believe that after long battles with the Berbers, Cisse married the three daughters of their leader and created an impressive alliance.

Oral tradition in the legend of Wagadu says that after Cisse's death, his two sons - Khine and Dyabe, disagreed about who would become the successor. They fought and Khine won the battle. Dyabe, humiliated, made an accord with a black snake with seven heads named Bida.

Dyabe promised to sacrifice a virgin to the snake once every year in return for victory over his brother. He fulfilled his promise to Bida until his death. The wealth of Ghana is depicted by this story, as the Soninke believe that there were rains of gold due to the annual virgin girl sacrifice to the black snake

Royalty Gorgeously Attired
"The King adorns himself like a woman wearing necklaces round his neck and bracelets on his forearms and he puts on a high cap decorated with gold and wrapped in a turban of fine cotton. He holds an audience in a domed pavilion around which stand ten horses covered with gold-embroidered materials…and on his right, are the sons of the vassal kings of his country, wearing splendid garments and their hair plaited with gold.At the door of the pavilion are dogs of excellent pedigree. Round their necks they wear collars of gold and silver, studded with a number of balls of the same metals."

Another clarification to the prosperity of the Empire was its gold mines located in Kumbi Saleh, the imperial capital. This place became an important commercial centre. The existence of camels facilitated the transport of gold and other products, such as slaves, salt and copper, textiles, beads, and finished goods, with the rest of the world. Arab writers. Al-Hamdani, for example, describes Ghana as having the richest gold mines on earth. These were situated at Bambuk, on the upper Senegal River. The capital of Kumbi Saleh became the focus of all trade, with a systemati
