Movie theatres have generally done a good job with the transition to digital...which gives even skeptics like me good reason to see certain movies in the theater. And generally, we'll attend Rave Motion Pictures (#ravemotionpictures) in Polaris (Columbus, OH). Our Saturday visit for Man of Steel ( #manofsteel ) was a big time fail for the cinema. To start with, there was a full lobby of patrons who wanted to buy tickets...and just two windows were open to serve them. A manager even came out and stood futzing with some of his business in one of the other booths, so he saw the situation, but then disappeared again. Tacky. Worse yet, we pre-purchased our tickets (paying extra for the privilege), but couldn't just walk up to a dedicated kiosk to grab the tickets and go. Tacky. Third, we were seeing MoS 3-D but were neither given glasses nor given clear directions to find them. Something was mumbled to our backs about it as we headed for the snack bar. I looked around and found nothing obvious, and ended up having to grab previously used pairs from the collection box and take them to the restroom to wash them down before use. Finally, while standing in line for 10 minutes (and staring at prices that let me know I was out another $20 for the meager snacks I would order), exactly ONE customer was serviced and left the line I was in (and the other lines were not-moving at a similar pace). Seeing as how there were 15-20 people ahead of me, I bailed and went to my seat...arriving at just about showtime...snackless. Rave, there was no excuse for this treatment. Big-time eye candy from the very first frames. The fully-realized Krypton was superb. Loved the look-and-feel of the visuals and the backstory there. The word EPIC kept coming to mind over and over. I don't know that I've ever seen anything that felt so HUGE on the screen. It just hit all my buttons. I thought the whole cast was excellent (yes, including Amy Adams...who was attractive and plucky and also showed more conscience than the Margot Kidder version). I'm not sure why people are reacting strongly against her. Michael Shannon was less over-the-top than many recent superhero movies baddies, but I thought he struck the right tone...a more legit tone...as General Zod (although I also think Terence Stamp was excellent back in the day). I don't understand all the brouhaha about a Brit playing "the all-American hero", Superman. Henry Cavill didn't sound the least bit British and came off as American as apple pie (and a KU fan). We only see Cavill shirtless briefly, but the guy certainly has the physique to play the role and fills the suit really well. Great suit, by the way! Kevin Costner's Jonathan Kent wasn't a huge role, but he played it beautifully (the relationships with Jor-El and Jonathan Kent made this an EXCELLENT watch on Fathers Day. Antje Traue as Faora was very menacing. I didn't find either the Christ-typing or the product placements were distracting. The special effects were superb overall. There were a couple moments where I didn't care for the super-character's on-screen CG super-movement...but that's been a gripe for me since the first Tobey Maguire Spiderman movie. It sometimes looks too inhuman...too fast and unnatural, even when factoring in super-speed. There were a few lapses in logic, I felt...but nothing I felt overly troubling. And this IS a comic book superhero movie, after all! I thought they set it up nicely for a sequel. The final scene with Zod struck me as slightly anti-climactic. It was OK, but left me wondering why it took so long to reach such an easy (or obvious) resolution. And, all the criticism of the folks who died during the battle for Metropolis, and how it didn't seem like human life was valued...HUH?? Aliens attacked Earth, and a lot of people died during the attempt to fend them off. We do NOT see a lot of gratuitous death, mostly they are fighting through empty buildings (there was plenty of warning and people got out) and Superman still cares about rescuing humans. Why all the whining? One last note: While I feel that Hans Zimmer's score lacks the anthemic quality of some of the John Williams stuff...which I personally find somewhat disappointing...it ended up fitting the mood of what was happening on-screen just fine. The movie never lets up, and there wasn't a lot of time to wish for more substantive music. I can respect those who disagree and found the movie disappointing, but as for me...I loved it. Of all the movies I've seen in recent years, THIS is the one I would consider going back to watch in the theatre.
