SECOND CROP STRONG FOR THE FACTOR
By Evan Hammonds

A stallion's second crop is one of the tougher sells as the
commercial market may have switched its focus to first-
year stallions and their progeny have yet to race.

Just as War Front's son Declaration of War leads the first-
crop weanling sire list, it's no surprise another son leads
the second-crop sire list by average.

Lane's End's grade I winner The Factor is at the top;
22 of his 2015 sale weanlings averaged a robust $130,409
off a second-year fee of $15,000. The Factor's first-crop
weanlings averaged $87,150, so that's a 49.6% increase
from year one to year two.

Top 3-year-olds from 2012 fill the trifecta of second-crop
weanling sires by average. Grade I winner Bodemeister,
by Empire Maker, has an $85,083 average compared with
his $30,000 stud fee while Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner
Union Rags has posted an $81,333 weanling average off
his second-year fee of $35,000. BH

Cigar Mile Marks Dirt Debut for Mshawish
By Claire Novak

The horse who ran fourth in the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) will get a chance to run that same distance on dirt in the Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Bradley Weisbord, advisor to Al Shaqab Racing, said 5-year-old Mshawish will make his dirt debut at the highest level Nov. 28 after 19 turf starts and one synthetic surface outing in his 20-race career.

"We'd been trying to run him on dirt since last winter," Weisbord said of the Todd Pletcher trainee. "We made a plan to run him in the Dubai Turf (UAE-IT), so we couldn't run him on dirt then. When we came back our goal was the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) with the idea of trying the Forego (gr. I) between as a prep, but he popped a foot bruise a week before the race in New York and had to go to the Mile off no prep, not being able to try dirt.

"If Liam's Map wasn't his stablemate in the barn, we might have even run him in the Dirt Mile (gr. I), that's how confident we were that he'd like the dirt. But because (eventual Dirt Mile winner) Liam's Map was in the race, we decided to head to what turned out to be an even more competitive race in the Breeders' Cup Mile."

Mshawish is a Medaglia d'Oro   runner who earlier this season won the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (gr. IT) and Fort Lauderdale Stakes (gr. IIT) and finished third in the Dubai Turf. He began his career in France and was placed with Pletcher after his connections sent him to the U.S. in 2014.

"This has really been in the plans for pretty much a full year and for one circumstance or another, we haven't had the chance to do it," Weisbord explained. "Now that he came out of  Breeders' Cup Mile in great shape, it's a good opportunity to try dirt in New York running out of his own stall."

With a 6-2-3 record from those 20 starts for earnings of $1,790,151, Mshawish is expected to continue racing in 2016 for Al Shaqab.

"We've gotten some stud offers for the horse, but we don't feel they've been aggressive enough," Weisbord said. "He'll probably make more on the track this coming year; he's made a million and change and he's only a few different results away from $2 million. We think he's set on a good 2016."

Mshawish was bred in Kentucky by OTIF 2007 out of the Thunder Gulch mare Thunder Bayou. He went through the auction ring three times, including at the Arqana Saint-Cloud May 2-year-old breeze up sale in 2012, where he was a $219,589 purchase by Mandore International Agency for Al Shaqab.

"He's as good of a training horse on the dirt as I've ever witnessed, including (2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner) Animal Kingdom   and (2012 Arkansas Derby (gr. I) winner) Bodemeister  ," Weisbord said. "He floated on his own in solo moves every week at Palm Beach Downs this winter, and if you watched him train on the dirt you'd never even run him on the grass. What he's going to do at the quarter pole (in the Cigar Mile), I don't know, but as far as half-mile and five-eighths works on the dirt go, he's really strong."

The most recent recorded work for Mshawish was was a four-furlong move breezing in :50.10 over the Belmont Park training track Nov. 14. He prepped for his Breeders' Cup Mile run with one turf work and two dirt moves at Keeneland leading up to the World Championships.

"A lot of times grass horses will look good at the quarter pole and spit the bit when it's time to start running, but the horse trains tremendous on dirt," Weisbord said. "He's out of a Thunder Gulch mare and by Medaglia d'Oro  , whose progeny run well on both surfaces, and I really have no concerns he's not going to handle the dirt. Will he be grade I quality against the likes of Private Zone and Tonalist? I don't know yet."

There's a chance Mshawish could contest the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) or return in the Dubai Turf if he runs well in the Cigar Mile.

"I would say if he ran well on the dirt, we'd highly consider the Dubai World Cup and Dubai Turf," Weisbord said. "I think he's a nine-furlong horse ideally ... I don't necessarily think he's a miler or a mile-and-a-quarter horse, but for $10 million we might have to find out."

STAR OF GOSHEN BACK TO EMPIRE MAKER
By Claire Novak

As Empire Maker returns to stand at Gainesway, Ahmed
Zayat plans one last shot to repeat the mating that resulted
in the sire of a Triple Crown winner.

To a 2005 Empire Maker cover, Zayat's Lord At War mare
Star of Goshen produced multiple grade I winner Pioneerof
the Nile, the sire of American Pharoah. Zayat later returned
the mare to Empire Maker but the resulting 2009 filly, unraced
Orchardof the Nile, was sold as a broodmare.

"I have a Bodemeister weanling filly from this past year," Zayat
said. "Unfortunately (the mare) slipped early last year, and I
didn't want to try back so I could prepare for this year. She is old.
This will be her last year of breeding before I retire her. She has
been very good to me over the years and set the foundation for
Zayat Stables."

Star of Goshen, 21, has produced 11 foals—10 of racing age.
Of her five runners, Pioneerof the Nile is the only stakes winner.
Forefathers (Gone West) was multiple grade II-placed. BH

MIDLANTIC FALL SALE BEGINS IN TIMONIUM
By Madison Scott

Fasig-Tipton's one-session Midlantic Fall yearling sale
begins Oct. 6 in Timonium, Md. The sale has cataloged
410 horses, down 8.9% from last year's 450 yearlings,
the largest offering since the sale was shortened from
two sessions in 2012.
In 2014 the auction declined significantly in average
(15%), median (-41%), and gross (-19%), with the buy
back rate jumping from 14% in 2013 to 28%.  Kentucky-
breds comprise a sizable portion of the sale, with 69
yearlings cataloged for 17% of the catalog, a substantial
uptick over the 8.4% from last year. The increase may be
well founded: Kentucky-breds have consistently
outperformed the sale average and median. Since 2012,
Kentucky-breds have averaged at least 50% above the
cumulative sale average and 88% over the median.
Kentucky sires are well represented, with yearlings by
Bodemeister, Curlin, Into Mischief, Super Saver, and Uncle
Mo. Stellar Wind and Avanzare, multiple graded stakes
winners in 2015, are both Midlantic Fall sale graduates. BH

Empire Maker crosses well with just about any sire line but seems to enhance mares that carry Danzig or Seattle Slew in their pedigrees. This especially includes the A.P. Indy sire line. His top offspring include Royal Delta, Soaring Empire, and Empire Way, results of crossing with the A.P. Indy/Seattle Slew sire line. Other top offspring include Bodemeister (Storm Cat), Pioneerof the Nile (Lord at War), Battle Plan (Seeking the Gold), In Lingerie (Storm Cat), Grace Hall (Ezzoud), and Emollient (Touch Gold).

Rumor has it Empire Maker is returning to the United States for 2016, and although it is unclear whether or not he will remain here permanently, the stallion will likely be very popular with American breeders, especially after his grandson just won the first Triple Crown in 37 years. This is likely a factor in his possible return. No matter the reason why he is returning, America has gained another stallion it lost from its breeding scene. Empire Maker is likely to be well-received by American breeders.

Today in Horse Racing History – May 19, 2012:  I’ll Have Another broke clear and ran relaxed. He edged closer while leaving the far turn and closed strong ahead of Bodemeister in the Preakness Stakes (G1) winning by a neck on the 1 3/16 mile dirt track at Pimlico.

I’ll Have Another won three additional graded races in 2012, the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) over Empire Way by 2 3/4 lengths, the Santa Anita Derby (G1) by a nose over Creative Cause, and on May 5th, the Kentucky Derby (G1) ahead of Bodemeister by 1 1/2 lengths. I’ll Have Another was retired June 8th, a day before his scheduled start in the Belmont Stakes ending his Triple Crown run when it was revealed he was beginning to develop tendonitis of the superficial digital flexor tendon. I’ll Have Another joins Burgoo King (1932) and Bold Venture (1936) as the only horses to have won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but not compete in the Belmont.

I’ll Have Another entered stud in 2013 at Big Red Farm in Hokkiado, Japan. He was voted the 2012 Eclipse Champion Three Year Old Male. His overall record was 7: 5-1-0 with career earnings of $2,693,600.

The Hall of Fame trainer could make some new memories Saturday if either of his top two favorites — American Pharoah or Dortmund — end up wearing the garland of red roses in the winner’s circle.
Baffert is seeking his fourth Derby win and first since 2002. Back then, his youngest son, 10-year-old Bode, wasn’t even born.
“We just have to contain ourselves,” Baffert said. “It’s exciting coming in here with two good horses.”
The 62-year-old trainer has what some believe is the strongest 1-2 punch since trainer Ben Jones won with Citation and finished second with Coaltown in 1948.
“Hope for a dead-heat,” Baffert joked.
American Pharoah — winner of four straight races by a combined 22 1/4 lengths — is the early 5-2 favorite. The brown colt has an unusually short tail; another horse chewed the end of it off on the farm. He’ll be ridden by Victor Espinoza, who won last year aboard California Chrome.
Dortmund, the 3-1 second choice, comes into the Derby with a 6-0 record, equaling the undefeated marks of Seattle Slew and Smarty Jones when they won in 1977 and 2004. His sire Big Brown won in 2008.
“It might be the toughest Derby that we’ve had in quite a few years,” said Kiaran McLaughlin, who trains Wood Memorial winner Frosted.

Some things to look for at the 141st Kentucky Derby:
TODD SQUAD: Todd Pletcher will saddle three horses: Carpe Diem, the 8-1 third choice; Materiality; and Itsaknockout, fittingly running on the same day as the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight in Las Vegas. Jockey Luis Saez will wear the name of each fighter on his pants as part of a promotional tie-in. Pletcher won his first Derby in 2010 with Super Saver.
OFTEN A BRIDESMAID: Ahmed Zayat is looking to shake his bad luck at the Derby. Three times horses owned by the Egyptian have finished second behind long shots. In 2009, 50-1 Mine That Bird sneaked up along the rail and beat Pioneerof the Nile. In 2011, Nehro was defeated by 20-1 Animal Kingdom. A year later, 15-1 I’ll Have Another beat Bodemeister. Baffert counts two of those losses among his Derby defeats, having trained Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister. Zayat experienced more misfortune Friday when El Kabeir was scratched from the race with a sore foot. That leaves Zayat with American Pharoah and Mr. Z in the 20-horse field.
BIG NUMBERS: The Derby attendance record of 165,307 was set in 2012, when I’ll Have Another won. Saturday’s forecast calls for sunny skies and 73 degrees around race time at 6:34 p.m. ET. The Kentucky Oaks on Friday drew a record of 123,763, setting the stage for a big crowd to pour through the gates at Churchill Downs to party, drink and maybe even see a horse or two.
SIZE MATTERS: Dortmund stands 17 hands; in human terms that’s 5 foot, 8 inches from the ground to the area between his shoulder blades. Each hand equals 4 inches, so when Dortmund raises his head and neck, add another 2 feet or so, making for an imposing beast. By comparison, 2009 Derby winner Mine That Bird was just 15 hands. Baffert likens lanky Dortmund to 7-foot Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky. “He can dunk,” the trainer joked.
BIG BUCKS: The owners of Carpe Diem plunked down $1.6 million for him as a 2-year-old, making the colt the priciest in the 20-horse field. Return on investment in the Derby is often disappointing. The only million-dollar colt to have won was Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000; his owners paid a whopping $4 million.
