MY RUN MOVIE - The Terry Hitchcock Story
After tragically losing his wife to breast cancer and struggling to raise three young children on his own, Terry Hitchcock seized on an idea. He wanted to accomplish the impossible: run 75 consecutive marathons in 75 consecutive days to bring attention to the struggle of single parent families. MY RUN is more than a film about a guy running multiple marathons, it’s about the daily marathons we all run in life. Narrated by Billy Bob Thornton.

Angelina Jolie: Chopping Away the Fear
So, this Angelina Jolie thing…yeah…I dunno. I’ve always been oddly fascinated by Angelina Jolie.  She’s SO beautiful…and rather odd…or she spent a long time wanting people to think she’s odd – with the vial of Billy Bob Thornton’s blood around her neck and the lip lock with her brother and, you know, the general weirdness.... chicagonow.com/mama-bunny-pip/2013/05/angelina-jolie-chopping-away-the-fear/" class="more-link">Read m...

Movie List Entry #50: Princess Mononoke
Stars: Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Billy Bob Thornton, Keith David & Jada Pinkett Smith
Set: 1550s Japan

Hayao Miyazaki is a genius.  I doubt that's news to anyone who knows this name, but it should be said anyway.  Miyazaki is the Japanese animator responsible for Princess Mononoke and many other great films.  This is a work of love and a work of art, and should be enjoyed at least once.  But full disclosure: this movie is not my favorite of Miyazaki's, and while it is good, it really is the type of film that you have to be in the right mood for, otherwise it can drag.

Princess Mononoke presents simple themes with layers of complexity underneath them.  On the surface, the movie has a conservationist message, a favorite of Miyazaki's, that humanity has lost touch with its balance with nature.  A similar theme is explored in Tolkein's Lord of the Rings.
Anyway, the movie's main character, Ashitaka, is infected with a curse after he comes in contact with a Boar God that was driven insane and turned into a demon by an iron bullet.  Ashitaka goes into exile and travels to find a way to lift the curse.  On his journey, he meets a monk who's plotting to decapitate a powerful forest spirit in order to save the emperor's life.  He also meets the iron-willed ruler of a mountain town that makes muskets, the girl San who lives with the Wolf God and her spirit wolves and an even older and more powerful Boar God.  During the journey, a war breaks out with the boars, the wolves and San on one side and the iron village on the other while the monk plays both of them.  During the chaos, the monk succeeds in getting the forest spirit's head, which culminates into a giant monster-thing that bleeds destruction on the land before Ashitaka and San return the head.  They have a sort of Adam & Eve connection at that moment.
Each side is presented rather fairly, except that Ashitaka represents the "good guy," and the monk, through his greed is the "bad guy."  Interestingly, the boars go to war because they're losing their sentience and decide for one last battle before they're hunted to extinction.  The humans of the iron town are just trying to make a living, but they don't realize they've lost their connection to nature.  Ashitaka maintains his connection, but ultimately stays with the town due to his faith in humanity.  San stays with the forest because she knows no other life.
Also interesting is how the terms "gods" and "spirits" are used.  The animals called gods don't seem to have divine abilities other than their larger-than-normal size and the ability to speak.  The only creature with divine attributes is the Forest Spirit, which walks on water, heals Ashitaka a couple times and remains passive to the action (until decapitated, then it becomes wrathful).  I think this provides insight into what "gods" and "spirits" mean to Western cultures and what they mean to Eastern cultures.

The real treat of this movie is the animation, which makes Miyazaki a genius.  It's breathtaking.  Each scene is like a work of art with beautifully painted forests and mountains.  The people and the animals resemble traditional anime, but they move so smoothly and naturally.  It's easy to get sucked into the world.  This is also a violent film.  A lot of blood gets spilled, or in some cases coughed up.  But unlike many anime movies and/or shows, the violence here isn't glorified.  It's part of the imbalance with nature and thus is made to look horrifying.

I will say the voice acting for Princess Mononoke could have been better.  I think Billy Crudup and Claire Danes did a good job as Ashitaka and San.  But Billy Bob Thornton, as the monk, and Gillian Anderson, as the Wolf God, sounded bored and flat, like they were reciting the lines while waiting to work on something else.  Keith David is great as the Boar God, but his voice is awesome, especially when he's voicing an animated character as big and impressive as the Boar God.  If you've heard his voice, which you probably have, you know what I mean.

I do like Princess Mononoke.  It is a terrific film, but personally, I'd rather watch Spirited Away, which I think is Miyazaki's real masterpiece.  Mononoke can feel weighty with its 2+hour run time, the increasingly complex plot lines and what I think is some cultural differences between Japan and the U.S.  I don't mean big differences, just some subtleties like the gods and spirits thing.  But like I said earlier, this movie should be seen at least once if you're a fan of good animated features.

As an actor, that is someone who relies greatly on their looks for their livelihood, Angelina Jolie's choice not only to get a preventative double mastectomy, but to speak openly and honestly about it is, quite frankly, astonishing.

On a side note, I am amazed that she kept this hidden from the stupid celeb media and got to talk about it on her terms.
A Standing Ovation for Angelina Jolie
With everyone still reeling from Angelina Jolie's announcement of her double mastectomy, it's worth pausing to give Angelina, the magnetic force of celebrity that has been firmly in the spotlight — whether it be because she wore a vial of Billy Bob Thornton's blood or because she visited beleaguered flood victims in Pakistan — a round of applause.
