Our readings this week dealt with the globalization of entertainment and how sometimes it is changed to match the preferences or perceived preferences of a local population, as with the Australian Big Brother example. This LA Times article is about the Chinese release of Iron Man 3, which underwent several changes in order to appeal to a Chinese audience. Apparently, the name of the film's main villain was changed from "The Mandarin" to something that is less suggestive of the character's "Chinese" connection. There were also some extra characters added to the film, played by famous Chinese actors, as well as product placement and advertisements for Chinese products. I think this is an excellent example of how our entertainment cultures are becoming more global and especially how important the Chinese market is becoming for the American entertainment industry. The producers of Iron Man 3 went to extra lengths to change their film in order for it to be able to screen in Chinese theatres, and were rewarded with millions of dollars in ticket sales. Even though the changes were deemed "unintentionally hilarious" and "ridiculous" by many Chinese viewers, the fact remains that it made a great amount of money. I would not be surprised to see similar changes made to American movies in order to be screened in China in the future.
