Turing and the Apple logo
This story never seems to die. Over Turing's centenary weekend the story that the Apple logo (the apple with a bite out) may be a reference to Turing and the poisoned apple it's alleged he committed suicide with cropped up all over the world. Typical articles claim that Steve Jobs enjoyed the myth and never debunked it despite the fact that the logos designer, Rob Janoff, categorically stated that he'd never heard of Alan Turing when he designed the logo.
Regular readers of this blog will know that I reported back in 2011 that Stephen Fry said on his BBC TV show QI that he'd asked Jobs about the Apple logo and Turing. Jobs replied “It isn't true, but God we wish it were!”  It seems though that this is one creation myth that isn't going to go away. We all just want the Apple logo to refer to Turing. It's appropriateness is even more extraordinary when you look at the old rainbow colored Apple logo, which could imply a reference to Turing's homosexuality. In fact the rainbow colors were used by Apple to simply point out that the Apple II supported color graphics. However, I don't think we're going to let the truth stand in the way of a good story anytime soon.
QI XL Turing and the Apple Logo
There was a large section devoted to Alan Turing in the BBC show QI XL (series 1 episode 13, broadcast Dec 2 2011), which features Stephen Fry and a panel of guests answering difficult but interesting...

In 1952 Alan Turing, a british mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and computer scientist, wrote a paper which remains influential in computational biology today. He explained how stripes might form on a snake’s skin [and other patterns on animals], using the dispersion of two chemicals; an activator [red] and an inhibitor [yellow]. The activator causes the colouration, and the inhibitor inhibits it. Turing wrote a pair of equations which say that concentrations of the activator cause creation of more inhibitor, but that the inhibitor diffuses and spreads out more quickly than the activator. As shown in the animation, this causes the activator to form peaks with surrounding basins of inhibitor. The concentrations of the two chemicals quickly converge to a stripey pattern where the red activator is periodically in higher concentration than the yellow inhibitor.

There is still a lot to learn about A.I., though, and two of the greatest think tanks in the world are coming together to see if they can’t just crack the metaphorical code. NASA and Google have teamed up to launch the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab, to be hosted by the Ames Research center, where they’ll house a quantum computer that international researchers are encouraged to spend time with. The goal is to study quantum computing’s role in how an artificial system can adapt to learning. You can’t know what’s in a room unless you give it a door or a window, and they’re hoping the Lab offers insight previously untapped. It’s something people like Alan Turing are probably spinning in their graves over.

The press release talks a bit about what makes designing smart computers so challenging, though the language is on a a sub-layman’s level that doesn’t really give any details about anything. Here’s the most useful paragraph as far as getting into what they’re working with:

We’ve already developed some quantum machine learning algorithms. One produces very compact, efficient recognizers — very useful when you’re short on power, as on a mobile device. Another can handle highly polluted training data, where a high percentage of the examples are mislabeled, as they often are in the real world. And we’ve learned some useful principles: e.g., you get the best results not with pure quantum computing, but by mixing quantum and classical computing.
