Dear babyboomers before you lament that lack of engagement of the younger generations in religious life, remember you started the trend. Instead of complaining about our lack of religious engagement, show us how God is changing you for the better.

VI. LOVE

First Corinthians 13:1-2, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become [as] sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.  And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.”

The love here spoken of is agape love, or benevolent or disinterested love.  It is the kind of love we accomplish through the will not emotion.  It is not like the natural love a mother has for her child or the love a husband has for his wife, which love exist many times in our affections.  Agape love is when you will the best for others, or are willing to do the best for others regardless of their relation, circumstances, or attitude toward you, and without regard for reward.  It is the kind of love God shows even though we do not merit it.  He makes His sun and rain provide for the need of all, and He gave His Son and spiritual rain to save all.  Notice that Paul says that even though he could speak with tongues of angels, prophesy, understand all mysteries and knowledge, and have all faith that this was nothing without love.  This implies that you can have these gifts and still not possess benevolence.

Romans 11:29 says, “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance,” which means that once a gift is given it is irrevocable; there will be many in hell that possessed spiritual gifts while in this world but failed to walk in love.  And why would it be nothing to possess all these things without love?  Because without love you are lost, and it means nothing to gain everything in this world, even spiritual gifts, and lose your soul.  Spiritual gifts are meant to enhance the love we can have amongst ourselves and for others, not elevate people into some hierarchy of leadership.  Additionally, without agape love spiritual gifts only make those who possess them arrogant, and in the place of benevolent love they usually substitute emotional love.  People strain and work themselves into an emotional frenzy all the time trying to obtain the same affection for others like they have for those who sustain a special relation to them.

The love spoken of here is not an emotional love, but a willful state of mind.  The love the Bible is talking about is best defined in Luke 6:32-38, “For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.  And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.  And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.  But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.  Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.  Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”  This passage is perhaps the best definition of virtuous, disinterested, benevolent, agape love in the Bible.  This is the whole of moral law, to love God supremely willfully, and your neighbors equally as yourself willfully, even if they are unthankful and evil.

First Corinthians 13:3-7, “And though I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.  Charity suffereth long, [and] is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;  Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;  Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”

There have been those in church history who have bestowed all they had to feed the poor, and spent their whole lives ministering to the needy, and have not received the fullness of God’s Spirit.  There are so many charities, and I am thankful for each one that does good, but what profit is it if you cannot change the people’s lives and get them baptized with the Holy Ghost and see them firmly established in God’s word and walking in biblical love?  For without biblical love they are still lost.  It would be better to convert one person really, than to feed one billion; because the happiness that one person will experience in God’s kingdom will outweigh all the misery the one billion ever experienced in our time.  Also, if that one person should be lost among the billion, their misery in hell will outweigh the misery the billion hungry would have experienced in our time too.  That is the law of progression.

The next words of Paul, “though I give my body to be burned,” also depict another extreme.  There are people who attempt to be martyred hoping to receive a reward in eternity.  Muslims certainly believe they will receive some great reward for their suicide bombings.  Again, without proper love these things profit nothing, for the persons who perform them are really lost.  The remainder of the passage shows that love accomplishes all things.  It is the greatest of commandments.

First Corinthians 13:8-10, “Charity never faileth: but whether [there be] prophecies, they shall fail; whether [there be] tongues, they shall cease; whether [there be] knowledge, it shall vanish away.  For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.”

If you look at history you can see that man has always increased in knowledge, and our nature seems to possess the ability to be endlessly improved upon.  Love will never fail because we will always be increasing in our care one for another even in eternity.  However, all the spiritual gifts will fail or cease.  They were never personally ours anyway, but were granted by the Holy Ghost to accomplish the ministry of Christ and the operations of the Father.  Some use this passage to indicate that tongues have been done away with now, but this can’t be true because they are still needed.  Some claim the perfect thing that has come is the Bible, or at least they did until the age of multiple Bible translations.  Still, others claim that we are now under God’s perfect gift of love in Christ and have no need of spiritual gifts.  This just cannot be the meaning of this passage because if it is interpreted to mean tongues have been done away with that means knowledge has been done away with as well.  Man is still discovering things new everyday, so it is obvious that knowledge has not been done away with.  There are also a large number of prophecies that have yet to be fulfilled, so that cannot have been done away with either.  This passage could be referring to our own spiritual understanding.  The word “perfect” in this passage appears seventeen times in the New Testament.  The occurrence in Romans 12:2 says, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Tongues may very well cease if an interpretation of what is being said comes forth.  Also, there is no need of attaining knowledge once what it is needed is known.  And we no longer need the prophecy when the prophecy has been fulfilled.  In the Old Testament there are many prophecies concerning Christ, but when Christ came that which was in part was done away with, because He fulfilled it.  Conversely, this passage is best interpreted to mean our life when Christ returns, and the perfection His presence will bring to everyone and everything.

First Corinthians 13:11-13, “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.  For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.  And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these [is] charity.”

In verses eight through ten we saw things “cease, vanish away, and done away” with.  Here we see Paul needing to do away with the childish knowledge he had because his spiritual manhood required a better more perfect knowledge.  And yet, the manhood he now had could only see the reflection in part, but he holds that it will eventually be clear.  He has the faith to believe this will happen, and the hope (the prospect of what is already guaranteed) to know it is going to happen.  And so it is that here abides faith, hope, and love.  Love being the greatest because without it you cannot be saved, it is the whole of the Law of Christ, and it is greatest because it will abide forever.  Love never fails.

THE BEAUTY OF FRIENDSHIP

A faithful friend is a sure shelter. Friendship is a wonderful gift of God yet a rare treasure. Once found, it is the elixir of life. All of us seek a friend in our life, one to whom we can turn to in the depths of our heart. They are few and far between. There are three types of love according to the Greek mind: sexual love (eros), friendship love (philos) and sacrificial love (agape). Take note of your friends. Do they love in an agape way? Take a look at Jesus and you will see that He is the best friend we can ever have: faithful, honest, loyal and sacrificially loving.
The First Reading from Sirach mentions three kinds of friends — seemingly to be avoided at all costs! One kind of friend will stand by you when all is going well. Come some trial and confrontation, they are quick to depart and leave you abandoned. He is there as long as it suits him — for selfish pleasure. Another friend stands alongside you, but as soon as a quarrel begins, they will publicly display their anger. They will in turn become bitter with gossip, and false rumors will spread about you. A third kind of friend will share all things with you, even quite intimately, but trouble comes and you find him nowhere in sight.
The author Frank Crane states that a friend is one “with whom you dare to be yourself.” With a true friend, we can come from behind the masks of insecurity and be truly who we are. Many of us are hidden from others; we pretend to be who we really are not. Many of us live with a sense of false security and identity, we don’t know who we really are. We become afraid of ourselves.
Jesus is the most loyal friend. With Him, we can be truly ourselves. He loves and calls us His friends by sharing with us His most intimate secrets. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit to develop our friendship with the Lord. And let us pray for good friends in our lives. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

REFLECTION QUESTION: Consider those whom you call friends. Are they loyal, faithful and loving in all circumstances?

Jesus, You have called me Your friend. Help me to be loyal and faithful to You. Guide me, Lord, in the way of Your commands. Amen.

When we choose to follow Jesus completely, he gradually transforms our desires to be the same as his. When our heart's desire is the same as his, he can't help but give us what we desire. It starts by giving ourselves completely to him.

Drug into your dusky cave

I'm hit with such a rancid wave

It's stinking with the spoil of

the victims of your nature, love

You seem to care when no one dares

to read my soul as I lay it bare

You seem to care…I wait to see

if in the end you’re the one beside me

But, if you spied my plunging frown

No doubt you would swoop down

to snatch me from the brink, between

your talons, black, and eyes that gleam -

that claw my face with moonlight, where

sanity and reality begin to tear;

a dewy rose of numbing white,

that trembles alone throughout the night

I am your helpless at your touch, instead;

a languid rainbow, colors bled;

leaked through the punctures from your fangs

to briefly kill your hunger pangs

your satiated hate for love;

your snarling mouth, agape for love
