Make some noise for the guy known as the Beastie Boys' catalyst, John Berry who passed away today at the age of 52. He's one of the lesser known Beastie Boys you may have never heard of but a great example of how He's a Beastie Boy you've probably never heard of but had an incredible impact on the band and a generation of fans. Adam Yauch was once being encouraged to follow more academic ventures and John told him he was a way better muso than student. Because of one conversation from a guy that left the band soon after, a whole generation fought for their right to party. Rest In Peace John Berry.

John Berry, a founding member of hip-hop group Beastie Boys has died at the age of 52.
His father said he had been suffering from frontal lobe dementia, which had worsened in recent months.
John Berry originally formed the Beastie Boys as a hardcore punk band with three friends in 1981 and came up with the name for the group.
He played guitar on their first EP, Polly Wog Stew, but left before they achieved commercial success.
Berry attended the Walden School in New York with fellow band member Mike Diamond.
The pair were later joined by Adam Yauch and Kate Schellenbach and released their debut EP in 1982.
When Berry left the group, he was replaced by Adam Horovitz, known as Ad-Rock, and the band took a new direction as a hip-hop act.
Schellenback also left the group before the release of their 1986 album Licence To Ill, which became a chart hit.
The group continued as a three-piece, recording a total of eight albums over 25 years.

Another sleepless night so let's continue with our first wave New York City hardcore. So far we've listened to Heart Attack, The Abused, Bad Brains, Agnostic Front, Urban Waste, Kraut, Antidote, False Prophets, The Mob, The Undead and Reagan Youth. We now come to a band I'm sure most of you have heard of, Beastie Boys.
Three of the members of the early Beastie Boys came from the short lived The Young Aborigines, a band with Mike Diamond singing, John Berry on guitar and Kate Schellenbach drumming. By the time of their debut e.p. Polly Wog Stew Adam Yauch had joined on bass. Yauch had heard D.C. hardcore (it didn't really exist yet in New York) and wanted to play fast songs. The band started as kind of a goof, ,but had some admirers such as Dave Parsons whose label Rat Cage Records was a force in city hardcore and he invited them into the studio at 171A to cut the eight song Polly Wog Stew e.p. They played one show at A-7 and opened for Even Worse at The Playroom. There H.R., singer for Bad Brains, heard them and asked the group to open for him at Max's Kansas City. That started it all. '
I've got to say I'm not a big fan of Polly Wog Stew. Some of the songs are likable, but much of it sounds to me like middle class college kids trying to play hardcore. It just doesn't ring true to me. Of course that's just my taste. What do YOU think?
Their next release, the 12" e.p. Cookie Puss in 1983 was recorded as a trio, minus Schellenbach. The band had left hardcore behind and was heading towards hip hop. The title song centered around a crank telephone call to Carvel to order Cookie Puss. With it's strong beat and bratty, wise ass jive talking, it cause quite an underground sensation.
By 1984 they were firmly into rap with the Rock Hard e.p.
They toured with Madonna in 1985 and the next year released their first full length album, License To Ill on Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons Def Jam label. It was a monster hit record, selling 26 million in the U.S. and 50 million world wide. Since then the band has had 6 platinum records and in 2012 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
But the eight songs you're hearing now from 1982 were the first steps of this very famous group.
1. Beastie Boys
2. Transit Cop
3. Jimi
4. Holy Snappers*
5. Riot Fight
6. Ode To...
7. Michelle's Farm
8. Egg Raid On Mojo
