Here in the UK we share the global dilema of news being imparted by a relatively small number of individuals and corporate groups. In the UK these tend to be centre right and right with one notable exception of the Guardian newspaper group one of the only here to be owned by a trust and maybe because of this prepared and free to be adventurous with its reporting and scope of comment not hindered one may argue from the over the shoulder look at vested interest.

The current UK report into press wrongdoing and intrusions into privacy  under Lord Leveson has created all sorts of comment and keen debate. On the one hand there is a heated opposition from any taint of political, or political institutional protections into the conduct of the press and on the other there are those who deem that all opportunites for self stewardship have been thwarted by cynical chasing of circulations at all costs as an a priori and that the time is nigh for appropriate measures to ensure that the media are brought to book for any transgressions.

Its a detailed argument on both sides which does present real problems and gets us thinking about how we match aims and practical measures.

Even the Guardian which has much to say about the vested interest and media bias sees the transition to any new system as problematic. Yes to prevent the slide into cultural bullying by media power and the trivialisation of debate let alone the travesty of phone hacking but as the Guardian has intimated would any new accomodation hinder the most recent expose of the misdoings by the state as in the Greenwald and Snowden leaks. I am stopped in my tracks by this argument and cease salivating over the vision over the taming of Murdoch and the like.

The arguments and details are illustrated here.
