On this day:
At 15th July of 1988, "Die Hard", an action film starring Bruce Willis as wisecracking New York City cop John McClane, opens in theaters across the United States. A huge box-office hit, the film established Willis as a movie star and spawned four sequels. "Die Hard" also became Hollywood shorthand for describing the plot of other actions films, as in “Speed is Die Hard on a bus.”

"Die Hard" represents the class of modern action pictures and the standard by which they must be judged. Few films falling into the "mindless entertainment" genre have as much going for them as this movie. Not only is it a thrill-a-minute ride, but it has one of the best film villains in recent memory, a hero everyone can relate to, dialogue that crackles with wit, and a lot of very impressive pyrotechnics.

John McClane (Bruce Willis) had intended to spend a nice, quiet Christmas with his wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) and children, ironing out his marital problems and trying to resolve the situation that has him working in New York City as a cop while her career keeps her in Los Angeles. Unfortunately for John, a group of terrorists, led by the suave Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), has other ideas.

After taking over the high rise Nakatomi Tower and holding the attendees of the Christmas party (including Holly) hostage, they begin the time-consuming and complex procedure of breaking into the building's vault. However, one thing, perhaps the only thing - that Hans didn't plan on was John McClane, the self-professed "fly in the ointment," who is on the loose inside, and whose goals are in direct contradiction with those of the terrorists.

With "Die Hard", director John McTiernan ("Predator") has given us a modern action classic, a movie that doesn't slow down until the end credits are rolling to the tune of "Let It Snow." McTiernan is a master of pacing, and on those few occasions when the script lets him down, the camerawork of Jan De Bont comes to the rescue. This film is explosive in more ways than one, a lavish, noisy extravaganza that gets the adrenaline flowing.

Bruce Willis is perfect as the wisecracking John McClane, an "everyday" sort of guy who gets caught up in circumstances that force him to play the reluctant hero. This is a person that we can root for, even when some of the things he's doing are humanly impossible. Willis' acting skills are limited (although he did fine work playing a Vietnam Vet in In Country), but it's hard to imagine anyone else in this role.

Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber redefines the action genre villain. The man's charm lies in that volatile mixture of violence and cunning, all sheathed in a gentlemanly civility. Hans is intelligent, and Rickman plays the part with not only a sense of the man he's portraying, but an obvious respect for him as well. It doesn't take many minutes of screen time for us to be aware that Hans is no ordinary terrorist.

The supporting cast gives solid performances, even though there aren't talent-stretching roles to be filled. Bonnie Bedelia (as the wife in danger) and Reginald Veljohnson (as McClane's cop-on-the-outside-contact) are noteworthy. William Atherton is suitably slimy in a small role as a tabloid journalist.

Whether Bruce Willis is climbing up an elevator shaft, throwing himself off an exploding building, or racing barefoot across a flood littered with glass shards, his John McClane holds our attention while we hold our breaths. Die Hard isn't motion picture poetry, but it shows the kind of raucous entertainment that the industry is capable of delivering.

"Die Hard" is a terrific example of what happens when all the pieces of a film fall together perfectly. There simply are no weak spots or dull moments in the film. Is "Die Hard" one of the best overall movies ever made ? Probably not. But it's undeniably one of the best action movies ever made, and it just might well be the perfect modern action film.

On this day:
At 4th July of 1990, the movie "Die Hard 2" starring Bruce Willis as John McClane opened in US theaters. The film exceeded all expectations by actually outdoing the massive box office success of the first film. The film had a budget of US$70 million and had a wide release in 2,507 theaters, making $21.7 million its opening weekend. "Die Hard 2" has domestically made $117.5 million and $239.5 million worldwide, almost doubling that of "Die Hard". The film was followed by "Die Hard with a Vengeance" in 1995, "Live Free or Die Hard" in 2007 and "A Good Day to Die Hard" in 2013.

"Die Hard 2," subtitled "Die Harder," enters Bruce Willis in a decathlon of violence, and he places first in every event, including wrestling for guns, jumping onto conveyor belts, being ejected from cockpits, leaping onto the wings of moving airplanes and fighting with the authorities. It's rare that the sequel to a good movie lives up to expectations. Such is the case with Die Hard 2, the somewhat-muddled but still entertaining return of Bruce Willis' John McClane.

The plot of Die Hard 2 is more ambitious than that of the original. The confines of the Nakatomi tower have been widened, although most of the action still takes place in the limited area of Dulles Airport. This time, however, it's not just the terrorists that McClane has to contend with, but an army of reporters, a local police captain (Dennis Franz) who can't stand him, a government "anti-terrorist" squad, and a winter storm that's closing down airports all along the East Coast.

Why is Willis so effective in a movie like this ? Maybe because he combines a relatively athletic physique with the appearance and manner of Everyman. The title of the movie describes the basic plot device: Here is a man who will not give up, who will not admit defeat, who doggedly carries on in the face of adversity. The dangers and tests he faces would daunt a James Bond, but for this open-faced cop with the receding hairline, there is no choice. After all: "My wife is on that plane!"

Again this time he plays a cop on vacation. He's in Washington's Dulles airport waiting for his wife's flight to land on a crowded evening during the Christmas season. And scheduled into the same airport at the same time is a military jet bringing a South American drug tyrant to justice. A skilled band of terrorists, led by a former CIA operative, plans to seize control of airport operations by electronically bypassing the control tower. They'll shut off the airport lights, leave dozens of planes circling overhead and then cause one flight to crash, as a warning. What they want is a fully fueled standby plane, ready to spirit the dictator to freedom.

Willis, who has a cop's practiced eye, spots one of the conspirators, follows him into a luggage-handling area and discovers that a plot is afoot. But he can't convince the chief of airport security (Dennis Franz), who resents an outside cop on his turf. After a killing and various other hints (including a plane crash), the security chief finally admits he may have a problem on his hands.

But even then Willis' work is not over, and by the end of the movie he is single-handedly taking on whole planeloads of mercenaries in a fight to the finish. Because "Die Hard 2" is so skillfully constructed and well-directed, it develops a momentum that carries it past several credibility gaps that might have capsized a lesser film.

Additionally, while no one could hope to replace Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber, William Sadler's Colonel Stewart is a selection that leaves a gaping hole where the bad guy is supposed to be. Stewart has minimal personality and less charisma, and his band of terrorists are faceless goons that follow him because they all happen to agree with the worn-out creed of "Communism must be stopped at all costs." (The Berlin wall was still standing when this film went into production.)

Several characters return from Die Hard. The most obvious (and necessary) are John and Holly McClane. Also back for a cameo is Reginald Veljohnson (eating Twinkees again), and William Atherton has a few scenes reprising his Geraldo Rivera-like muckraking reporter. The newcomers include Art Evans as an engineer who uses his electronics expertise to fight the terrorists, John Amos as the major who taught Colonel Stewart "everything he knows", and Fred Dalton Thomas as the man in charge in the control tower.

The first film was directed by John McTiernan, this film was directed by Renny Harlin, who at the time, was relatively a newcomer as far as making movies went. Although Harlin doesn't quite achieve the same level of greatness with this movie as McTiernan did with the first movie, he still does a very effective job. In fact, he deserves credit just for being a relatively unheard of director who was able to come out and make a very well follow-up to a classic action movie.

Overall, it's a great sequel full of suspense, thrills and twists and turns. The special and sound effects were awesome and the solids plot made this another edge-of-your-seat ride that is perfect for any action movie fans!
