SpaceX would successfully land the Falcon9 first stage, and this sequence of photos taken over approximately 6 seconds shows the first stage descending, the legs opening and then the rocket safely descends to SpaceX Landing Zone 1.

Flickr Sunset SpaceX launch of GoreSat to L1, 4x farther than the moon
Tags: point   l1   space   deep   launch   lagrange   spacex   discovr   falcon9   goresat
"GoreSat" dates back to Gore's concern to monitor the Earth, but it was put in storage by Bush. Now called DSCOVR, and in partnership with NOAA, NASA, and the USAF, she will observe space weather from the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrangian point, 1,500,000 kilometers (930,000 mi) from Earth.

17 years in the making, Al Gore just penned an article in SciAm on this mission:

"Long delayed, DSCOVR is an observational mission to the Lagrangian point 1, or “L1,” a unique point between the sun and Earth where the gravitational pull of each sphere is equally balanced by the other. As it co-orbits the sun with Earth, DSCOVR will have a constant view of the Earth with the hemisphere facing the satellite fully illuminated by the sun as Earth rotates. From this unique vantage point, DSCOVR will capture and beam back to Earth a continuous stream of images of our planet similar to the historic image taken on December 7, 1972, during the Apollo 17 mission – which remains the only such image we have more than 42 years later. Not coincidentally, it is still the most published photograph in history."

Congrats to SpaceX on their first deep space launch!

[3/135] STS-3
Shuttle: Columbia
Launch: 22nd March 1982
Mission duration: 8 days
Launchpad: 39A Kennedy Space Center
Landing: White Sands Runway 17
…….
STS-3 was the third flight for the shuttle program and the third flight for Columbia.
For the first time the external tank wasn’t painted, saving 300 kg of weight.
This time the Remote Manipulator System (RMS, Canadarm) continued testing. One primary object of this flight was extensive thermal testing, by exposing the tail, nose and top of Columbia to the sun.
Columbia landed at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, because of bad weather at Edwards AFB.

Flickr The Last Shuttle Roll In

Shuttle Atlantis rolling in to the Orbiter Processing Facility for the last time. Many at NASA are breathing a sigh of relief. She is now a museum piece, like the others, and history may reflect that the Shuttle was the least safe human launch vehicle ever allowed to launch.

Now that the program is behind us, let me share what Shana Dale, former Deputy Administrator of NASA, told me with apprehension before the final flights: there was a 1/78 chance of total crew loss on each flight.

Space tourists like Garriott, who spent millions and had to learn Russian to fly with Soyuz, would not fly Shuttle even if it were free. Remember the o-rings? The segmented solid boosters were a tribute to politics over safety; for the inland state of Utah to win the business over those with coastal barge access, they had to be able to ship the motors out by rail, necessitating a segmented design deemed unsafe by all other space programs.

Oh, and it averaged $1 billion of expense per launch, with a ground support crew of 6,000 people (compared to 35 for SpaceX launches from the same Florida Cape).

Unlike Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and the latest crew launch vehicles, the Shuttle had no abort mechanism. She is perplexing in retrospect. When the Russians copied the Shuttle, they flew the Buran robotically for its first and only flight to a successful landing. STS-1, on the other hand, had the fearless John Young of the first manned Gemini flight (and GT-10, Apollo 10 and Apollo 16 under his belt).

David Knight has been filming the final Shuttle activity in 4K 3D (stay tuned for some amazing footage). This photo is by his son who was with him on location. Posted with permission, but if reused, please credit Knight. My photos are below.

[5/135] STS-5
Shuttle: Columbia
Launch: 11nd November 1982
Mission duration: 5 days
Launchpad: 39A Kennedy Space Center
Landing: Edwards AFB
…….
STS-5 was the fifth flight in the space shuttle program and the fifth flight of Columbia.
It was the first shuttle mission to deploy communications satellites into orbit, and the first officially "operational" shuttle mission. The shuttle carried a crew of four – the largest spacecraft crew up to that time – and the first two commercial communications satellites to be flown aboard a shuttle.
