Flickr 2012 Spelling Bee Regional Champ Marcy Ann Ermitanio

Congratulations to Marcy Ann Acosta Ermitanio, who tied for 51st in the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition. Marcy, the daughter of Francisco and Alma Ermitanio, is in eighth grade at Chacha Ocean View Junior High School. She bested all the other contestants from Micronesia at the regional competition in Guam by spelling “Ichabod.” In D.C. she successfully spelled “cabaletta,” among other challenging words. This was Marcy’s first time in Washington and she, her Principal Vince Dela Cruz, and father Frank got to visit their congressional office and tour the Capitol in between Bee events. Job well done, Marcy!

G-U-E-R-D-O-N, S-E-R-R-E-F-I-N-E. What are these words, you ask? They are the winning words in the two previous editions of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The tension — more than in a full season of "Grey's Anatomy," believe me — mounts with the semifinals at 7 a.m. on ESPN and then the finals at 8 p.m. on ABC. "Dancing With the Stars" fans note: Tom Bergeron hosts. And hey, you might learn something. Photo c/o AP.

day two of the Bee, and i'm working like crazy. my kids did really well in the first round today (round four), so i wanted to get photos in as soon as possible. there were no power outlets near the press tables in the room, so i found myself an outlet in the back, sat on the floor, and edited like a banshee while the round was still going on.

this photo is actually near the end of round five, after my Canadian kids all got out. the photo on the screen is one of my favorite from the entire event.

i'll be back there tonight to watch the finals from the audience! yeah, press credentials!

Also, I'm not so sure about this camera. Still evaluating whether I'll keep it or get the Canon S80.
