The freezing rain that fell on our area overnight and this morning was the cause of many downed tree limbs, power outages, and school closings. Anything that was exposed was covered with ice. In spite of the destruction it caused, it was beautiful! I saw these colorful berries on a quick walk around my neighborhood...

About a week ago, Chicago Public Schools announced that they would be closing more than 50 public schools in the area. Most of these schools are in poorer neighborhoods where there is a high minority enrollment. This country would look a great deal different if funds were invested in increasing technology and developing skills and trade support in these neighborhoods. Our prisons wouldn't be as crowded and we'd have a safer, better educated, and happier world. At the current time, Charter schools have taken funds and students from the public sector and yet don't have to be accountable for the funds they take. That has opened the door to mass corporate abuses and scandals with public tax dollars across the US. In Chicago, UNO Charter school was behind the most recent scandal. The money received from tax dollars is not being spent on education but instead on cronyism. Corporate greed has been allowed to corrupt our nation's best and brightest and they will continue to try to get more tax dollars as time goes on.

If you live in Chicago, call your Alderman and say you support public not charter schools. Pressure your alderman to advocate for a publicly elected vs. privately elected board of education that consists of actual parents and educators vs. millionaires. If you want to know more from a pro-education Chicago perspective, you can read some great articles by Kenzo Shibata:

If you don't live in Chicago but live in America, be aware that there are similar scandals happening in other major cities and look into your local news about education. Call or email your legislators. Diane Ravitch covers and speaks about a great deal of these issues affecting the US:

If you don't live in the US, the school closings news was actually covered by The Guardian today here:

Note on this photo in particular: this was a sit in where people were arrested. There was no violence, destruction of property and the street was already barricaded off from traffic.

If you want to know more from a pro-education Chicago perspective, you can read some great articles by Kenzo Shibata:

www.huffingtonpost.com/kenzo-shibata/

If you don't live in Chicago but live in America, be aware that there are similar scandals happening in other major cities and look into your local news about education. Call or email your legislators. Diane Ravitch covers and speaks about a great deal of these issues affecting the US:

dianeravitch.net/

If you don't live in the US, the school closings news was actually covered by The Guardian today here:

www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/mar/27/chicago-teac...

Here waiting for Tropical Storm Isaac to decide if he will torment South Florida or cut us some slack. I went out to the Boca Raton Inlet yesterday to get this one. They just announced school closings for Miami on Monday. I am hoping we will just get lots of rain & that there will not be any major events. Stay safe everyone!!!

.....you just might get it.

Yep, that my friends is falling snow. For weeks now I have been green with envy at all of my lovely friends in the UK and other parts of the world who have been enjoying actual winter weather and the wonderful photo opportunities that come with it. So, when i spotted the first falling snow flakes I was overjoyed and remained that way for several hours as I watched it fall relentlessly from the skies. I took this picture and some others and was excited. And then Husband mentioned the possibilites of school closings. You guessed it folks. I don't get to go to school tomorrow because of all this lovely snow I've been wanting for weeks now. My kids are thrilled though because school has been canceled for them as well. So, while I have to postpone my first school day, I do get the chance to have a free day with my family. Can't complain about that.

I'm also having a hard time reconciling the fact that I'm bummed about a snow day. This is a real "grown-up" moment for me. I'm still getting used to those.

...the kids are seeming kind of scary!

Actually school was "only" closed for 4 days last week. But we're expecting another storm with ice followed by snow and tmps in the teens on Wednesday. I completely blame the Steelers and Packers for this weather. :-)

Here's hoping you have a good week!

I'm taking advantage of Mother Nature's generosity so there will probably continue to be snow themed pictures for awhile. We are expecting more snow starting at about 1:00 a.m. and then again later in the week. I love it that the timing of all this happens just after I received the new camera! Like manna from heaven :-). I know that the unusually heavy snow precipitation is a big problem in other parts of the country, but here in the ATL, we get relatively little snow, usually much less than a foot, so it's really not too much of a big deal, other than the school closings!

This is in the cul-de-sac beside/behind our home. You might recognize the tree in the background directly behind the mailboxes :-).

In Sweden, school closings often are held in a church, mainly the Swedish Church.
It´s common that the pupils, among other things, sings (summer)songs to welcome the summer holiday.

The summer vacation in Sweden last from early June to mid/late August (a minimum of 10 weeks).

I won't be able to be on Flickr for very long because I have to leave soon for another pre-surgery physical at my doctors. Either way it's getting closer to my surgery date so I will have less time to spend with you all. The surgery is sure something thats hard to face and the recovery time is too long for my energetic personality. Life can be rough sometimes. We still have a lot of snow and ice in our area and many school closings. At least the kids are very happy about that. Anyway I just want to wish you all a very nice day.
