This cute Eastern Tailed Blue is just one of many butterflies that love milkweed. The orange variety goes by many names (see tags) but is commonly called butterfly weed. I have posted some other shots of butterflies that visit my milkweed and some of the plants I have been able to purchase from the NC Botanical Garden in Raleigh. As a friend once told me, "If you plant what they like, the butterflies will show up."

Asclepias tuberosa
(Pleurisy Root, Butterflyweed, Milkweed, Orange Milkweed)
Asclepiadaceae

By Christa Sinadinos

Pleurisy root has bronchial dilating effects and aids in deepening respiration. It helps to relieve tightness and pain in the chest. The root can be used for acute respiratory infections such as: bronchitis, pneumonia, croup, pleurisy, colds or flu. In addition, it can be used on a recuperative or even a tonic basis for individuals with asthma, chronic bronchitis, smoker’s cough, and allergies which affect the lower respiratory system.

It improves lymphatic drainage from the lungs. The dried root has cardiac tonic properties, and generally helps to reduce fluid congestion around the heart. It is particularly beneficial herbs for assisting congestive heart conditions, with the care of a trained practitioner.

Pleurisy root has diaphoretic effects. The tea consumed hot or warm initiates perspiration in the first phase of a cold or flu. In addition, the herbs stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage. As a tonic, the herbs are beneficial for individuals with patterns of adrenalyn stress, with poor elimination, and dry or deficient secretions. This can manifest as dry skin conditions such as psoriasis, or eczema, or generally dry flaky or tight skin. The herbs increase the moisture of the skin , as well as aiding elimination through the skin. It has mild laxative effects due to the cholagogue and bitter actions.

Pleurisy root can be used as a mild uterine diaphoretic. It is specifically used as a tonic for women with slow starting crampy menses, with scant flow and blood clots. It is beneficial for women who have ammenorhea or irregular menses, usually due to patterns of stress. The warm tea can be used to stimulate menstruation.

Warnings: Do not use during pregnancy or with heavy uterine bleeding.

"Pleurisy", Mark was so happy to hear I have pleurisy he starting shaking the doctors hand... I was expecting high fives any second, they both looked so pleased with themselves.
For 6 weeks I've been getting tested and have been prescribed everything from heart medication to hormones. We were all thinking it could be cancer, I changed doctors a few times and it was the third doctor (recommended by Dan's Mum... thanks Debbie!) that found the pleurisy.
Lol, so today's lesson children is trust your own instincts... I just knew the doctors were missing something & kept trying to get someone to find it.
P.S Pleurisy hurts!! I'm going now and will catch up everyone's lovely creations as soon as those antibiotics kick in!!

Native Americans and pioneers used the roots to treat respiratory problems, which is how the common name "pleurisy root" originated. The flowers of this plant attract butterflies and many other insects. Butterfly milkweed has a deep taproot, so it does not transplant easily. It will readily grow from seed. He spent times throughout 1916 attached to other ASC and Engineers Units before being admitted on the 31/12/1916 to the 5th General Hospital at Rouen with Nephritis. He was then moved to a series of hospitals over the next few weeks, with the diagnosis changing to “Acute Nephritis”, which saw him shipped to England. However when he arrived at the Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich, this was amended to “Slight Nephritis.” By the 27th he was “Dangerously ill”. He was to die on the 29th, at 1.15 am with cause of death attributed to Nephritis and Double Pneumonia \ Pleurisy. He was buried in the Earlham Cemetery on the 2.2.1917.

Nephritis is an inflammation of one or both kidneys, but can lead to kidney failure.

Trench Nephritis

An obsolete term for glomerulonephritis occurring in soldiers subjected to cold and damp conditions in trenches.

Diseases such as trench fever (an infection caused by louse faeces), trench nephritis (an inflammation of the kidneys), and trench foot (the infection and swelling of feet exposed to long periods of dampness and cold, sometimes leading to amputation) became common medical problems, and caused significant losses of manpower.

Around the 90-year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, it is important to remember the international effort that went into responding to the new diseases, which appeared during the First World War, such as trench nephritis. This condition arose among soldiers in spring 1915, characterized by breathlessness, swelling of the face or legs, headache, sore throat, and the presence of albumin and renal casts in urine. It was speedily investigated by the military-medical authorities. There was debate over whether it was new condition or streptococcal nephritis, and the experts agreed that it was a new condition. The major etiologies proposed were infection, exposure, and diet (including poisons). Research pointed to the origin of the disease as being infective rather than toxic, but no definite cause was discovered. A number of labels were given to the disease, including war nephritis. However, trench nephritis was the one used most widely. Trench nephritis was a serious problem for the Allies, leading to 35 000 casualties in the British and 2000 in the American forces. There were also hundreds of deaths. The condition was treated in line with pre-war regimens designed for acute nephritis. No significant preventative methods were implemented for trench nephritis, as there was no consensus regarding causation. The medical response to trench nephritis was largely ineffective, with medical commentators recognizing that there had been a lack of medical progress.

Trench nephritis was the major nephrologic problem of World War I, accounting for 5% of medical admissions and more than 10% of military hospital bed occupancy at that time.

It was sometimes referred to by doctors as “Brights Disease”.

28th Battalion Australian Infantry
31st October 1917 Age 27

Name: WATSON, THOMAS DAVID
Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Australian Infantry, A.I.F. Unit Text: 28th Bn. Age: 27 Date of Death: 31/10/1917 Service No: 2008
Additional information: Son of Thomas David and Minnie Clinton Watson, of 33, George St., South Fremantle, Western Australia.
Grave/Memorial Reference: 54. 720. Cemetery: NORWICH CEMETERY, Norfolk
www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=2803352

Private Watson’s military records can be seen online at the National Archives of Australia
naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/imagine.asp?B=1915245&I=1&am...

Thomas signed his enlistment papers on the 24th June 1915, at Blackboy Hills, Western Australia, joining the army on the 29th and being posted to the 3rd/28th. He was single, aged 23 and 10 months, and gave his profession as Miner. His next of kin was his mother, Minnie, who lived at Broad Arrow, Western Australia. Thomas was a native Australian, having been born in New South Wales. He was 5’3” with brown hair and eyes.

Being a soldier obviously took its toll on Thomas. He spent most of October 1915 to January 1916 in various hospitals with gun shot wounds to the scalp and shoulder. The initial location shown is Anzac, (presumably Anzac Cove, Gallipoli, and he was subsequently evacuated to Heliopolis). He subsequently returned to duty when the unit was stationed at Tel-el Kebir, January 1916, before embarking for Marseilles in March 1916. (Subsequent notes from his final hospital stay put it down as a shrapnel wound - SW rather than GSW. A separate note confirms this was picked up at Gallipoli).

He was “Wounded in Action” again 15/11/1916 - however a subsequent Field Court Martial decided it was self-inflicted and stopped his pay for 30 of the 45 days he spent in hospital as a result. His location at the time of shooting himself in the hand is given as “in the trenches, north of Fleurs, France”.

He was admitted to hospital again on the 7/9/1917, eventually being transferred to the Norfolk War Hospital, Thorpe on the 18/9/1917, his condition by now being described as Pleurisy. His eventual cause of death is listed as pulmonary haemorrhage and tuberculosis. His date of death is given as the 30th, and not the 31st as shown on CWGC. Exact time was 10.55 p.m.

Included in the file is an update that Minnie and her husband moved to George Street, Freemantle in August 1920.

“The deceased soldier was accorded a full military funeral, Gun Carriage, Buglers and bearers being supplied by the Army Service Corps stationed at Norwich. A wreath from Nurses and Patients was placed on the grave. Several Imperial and Australian patients attended the funeral. The “last post” was sounded at the graveside”

The Chaplain to the hospital, Rev F H Bennett-Symond pre-sided and the good polished elm coffin, with brass mountings was supplied by Mr R Firman, undertaker, of Thorpe St Andrews.

After another stint in Egypt, the 7th Brigade proceeded to France and the Western Front, as part of the 2nd Australian Division. The 28th Battalion took part in its first major battle at Pozières between 28 July and 6 August 1916. After a spell in a quieter sector of the front in Belgium, the 2nd Division returned to the south in October, where the 28th Battalion took part in confused and costly fighting to the east of Flers, in the Somme Valley.

For many of the major battles of 1917 the 28th found itself in supporting roles. At the second battle of Bullecourt, the 28th provided reinforcements who were nonetheless involved in heavy fighting. The 28th went on to attack as part of the third phase at the battle of Menin Road, capturing its objectives in seven minutes, and was in reserve during the capture of Broodseinde Ridge. The battalion was also in reserve for the battle of Poelcappelle on 9 October, but, with the attack floundering in the mud, it soon became embroiled in the fighting.

Everyone knows the spiny and sharp, pinkish pink bromelia. We don't associate it with the softness of lovely, sugary pineapple juice. Yet the bromelia and pineapple are closely related.
Originally from South America, bromeliads during and after the era of the great voyages of European discovery soon found their way to the tropical climes of Southeast Asia. In fact, the pineapple industry is the oldest agricultural enterprise of Malaysia, dating back to 1888 (in the Johor area).
Pineapples and other bromeliads were first described and collected by Charles Plumier (1646-1704) on his various voyages to South America. He named them for Olof Ole Bromelius (1639-1705) in 1703. Bromelius was one of Sweden's foremost botantists before the great Carolus Linnaeus. Linnaeus - his countryman - thus did not have to think long in accepting Plumier's suggestion to name these plants (1753).
Bromelius - like many botanists and herbalists before and after him - was a medical doctor as well. He'd taken degrees in Sweden and his doctorate in Leiden, the Netherlands. His first degree was awarded him on the basis of a study about pleurisy.
It probably wasn't pleurisy, but as a lad I once had a spell of bad coughing and the sugared pineapple juice my mother gave me, soothed the feeling but at the same time also pricked my throat with myriad little barbs. This macro of a beautiful bromelia suggested to me this morning wandering about the Lake Gardens what the inside of my poor throat back then might have looked like.

When I was a kid, I remember being able to reliably find one of these on every milkweed plant in my home town. But since about 1988 I have hardly seen any monarch caterpillars in the wild. We only have a few Pleurisy root plants growing on our property, but every one has a caterpillar this year. I'm delighted!

I think I need to get a second flash for the background so it doesn't look like night in all my shots.

Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), also known as Pleurisy Root, is a very uncommon member of the milkweed family. It favors dry habitats, and now essentially releagted to sandplain grasslands, mostly on Cape Cod and the Islands. The Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endnagered Species Program tracks butterfly milkweed as a Watchlist Species. As it name implies, the species is very inportant to nectaring insects.

Nothing is written on the back of this picture, but it is of my great-uncle Arnold.
I only met him once or twice at his home in Hastings in the early 1950's. He was a sick man then, having just had a pioneering lung operation, but bore his illness with humour and fortitude.
I was told many years after his death that he had been gassed in WWI.

NB: I'm trying to determine what the insignia is on his left lapel - can anyone help., Please?

Post Script.(June 2012)....He hadn't been gassed! He had volunteered claiming to be aged 17 in August 1914, when he was actually only 15! He got away with it, too! Unfortunately, he contracted pleurisy and then TB, resulting in his discharge in early 1915.
However, he somehow re-enlisted in late 1915, swapping his forenames around to fool the Army authorities. I believe at this stage he did serve abroad, possibly in the Balkans.
He later joined the short-lived 'Machine Gun Corps', hence the insignia shown on his lapel, and was gazetted a 2nd. Lieutenant in July 1918 four months before the war's end.
He was not lacking in courage, as the 160,000 strong Corps had one of the highest casualty rates in the British Army.
Again, he finished the war with an unspecified lung problem, maybe the TB had flared up again.
The story is that he discharged himself from the hospital to avoid the 'flu epidemic which was killing hundreds of thousands of people at the time, worldwide.
After the war he worked for a while as agent for Triumph Motorcycles in India before ill-health forced him back to the UK.
I'm still trying to fill in the gaps in the life of this fascinating man - by far the most interesting person I've come across in my family history quest.
