Our big dog Glory was extremely ill for the first time ever. Without going into the gory details, she became very weak at one point, not even able to keep water down and we didn't think she would make it. She's only 4 years old and very trim and active. It turned out to be a bad batch of dog food. I had purchased a different brand of dog food when my usual was out of stock. Only Glory ate it but picky Bean would not. The food is -- Purina ONE Beyond -- their premium and supposedly natural, health conscious recipe. It sounds good on paper and the ingredient list is very impressive but the reality is something different.

Checking online revealed some very disturbing things...recalls of dog and cat food, recalls of soy products used in pet foods due to Salmonella contamination and hundreds of complaints for Purina dog and cat food in the past few months alone. And very sad and tragic stories...pets were dieing. They were getting sick, exactly like Glory, recovering and then going back on the food! These unfortunate people didn't suspect it could be the food. It was heartbreaking.

My daughter was distraught and when Glory was at the very worst she took it upon herself to send Purina a message via twitter "Purina you bastards, you're killing my dog, how do you put this crap in the stores!!!" I asked her not to send any more messages to large corporations like that without telling me first but what was done was done. She received a lot of replies from people who felt the same way - And minutes later a reply from good old Purina. "We care please call us at our toll free number..."

I put a call in to Purina that morning, I was told they have not had any complaints about the food. I said come on, there are hundreds if not thousands of complaints online in recent months, do you mean to tell me, mine is actually the first complaint to Purina, ever?!! He replied, it was the first complaint that HE personally had received THAT DAY! I didn't need that kind of doubletalk or free coupons. I just want you not to put garbage in a bag labeled dog food. Good luck Purina. I hope the information I gave you helps you solve your problem, but I doubt it.

Glory is now doing well and I'm just happy I realized it was the food and stopped giving it to her. My kids have a new appreciation for their dogs and how fragile life is, so that is one good thing to come from this ordeal. I'm sorry this is so long but maybe it will help save a few pets. If your pet suddenly becomes sick please consider the food.

For the dogs
Honest Kitchen dog food. We have to be careful because only the Thrive formula does not have things Fanny is allergic to in it.

Life's Abundance canned; dry for snacks/treats

Pill pockets for medicine (they take a chinese herb for kidney failure. their kidneys are only beginning to fail so they still have a while to go in life)

For the cats
Mom's homemade raw diet

Supplement with Instinctive Choice canned; possibly dry for snacks/treats

Dehydrated chicken for taking liquid meds (Isis and Fanny take Maitake mushroom daily but for different ailments)

Pill Pockets for pills (Fanny takes antihistamines)

From Susan Thixton of The Truth About Pet Food on feeding HealthyPetNet food:

I purchase my dog food and cat food and their treats from HealthyPetNet via the Internet. My dogs eats Life’s Abundance dry, and Life’s Abundance canned Turkey and Shrimp. My cat eats the Life’s Abundance dry (cat food) from HPN, and the canned HPN Instinctive Choice. Kirby and Echo (my dogs) also eats the Porkhide bones.

I’ve been feeding the HPN food for over 4 years. Several things about this company make the difference for me…
• They use all US ingredients.
• They use all human grade/quality ingredients.
• And they can provide proof of the above. HealthyPetNet has gone to the effort of obtaining APHIS (Animal Plant Health Inspection Services – a division of the USDA) European certification. Any pet food that is made in the US that is shipped to Europe must have this certification that requires all ingredients to be of human grade/quality. HPN does not ship pet food to Europe, they go to the trouble of obtaining this certification to prove to customers the quality of ingredients. Plus, this certification requires that not only is the pet food manufacturing plant inspected, all vendors are inspected as well, by the USDA. Very few pet food manufacturers bother to have this certification.
• They control all warehousing of the pet foods, treats, and supplements. With almost every other pet food made, once the product leaves the manufacturer, they have no control as to how safely the pet food is warehoused; if it is subjected to pesticides, rodents, and/or extreme heat. The Petco warehouse problem in 2008 is the perfect example of what can go wrong. www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/64/1/If-you-buy-pet-fo... HPN on the other hand, has three of their own warehouses across the country; all pest control is done outside the warehouse. The products are shipped directly from these controlled warehouses to customers front doors. This completely removes the risk from unknown warehouse conditions as with typical pet foods.
• Every customer is in a database with emails and phone numbers. No pet food company is perfect; all are subject to human error. Typical pet food recalls are announced very slowly through the FDA and then the media. HPN on the other hand can/could alert pet owners directly, immediately through email; hopefully preventing a serious problem should human error occur.
• The pet food formulator, Dr. Jane Bicks, speaks directly to customers, potential customers, and representatives every week on a national conference call. This is the ONLY company that I am aware of that allows customers to speak directly to, and ask questions directly to, the scientist that develops the products. If I ever have a question about the food or the treats with regards to my pets – I can ask the Veterinarian that knows every ingredient of the food; instead of trying to make sense of what a telephone spokes person tells me and that’s after waiting on hold for five minutes after each question. She’s not Miss Personality like those you speak with at other pet food companies, but she’s direct, straight forward, and honest; she tells me what I need to know.
• The foods use proteinated minerals (for better absorption), provide probiotics (friendly bacteria to help promote a strong immune system), and other health promoting ingredients.

This line of dog food is one of only a handful that uses the safer ingredient selenium yeast (it's not approved by the FDA for cat food yet). Although selenium yeast is only a tiny ingredient in the food, the alternative ingredient that most pet foods use - sodium selenite - can have toxic results in pets. To read more about this ingredient, read this: www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/308/1/A-Close-Look-at-...

There are many pet foods that I like, that have similar ingredients, some even have a few more ingredients of quality. But in my experience, none offer the complete package that this company does. This is why I’ve stayed with this company, purchasing their foods and treats for over 4 years.

Below is a link to independent Reps of this company. You can contact the Representative from their website – click on the ‘Contact Us’ link – should you have any questions. Please direct questions to the Independent Rep, not me.

Flickr Nikita: Sept 11, 1999 – May 16, 2011

In late 2006, thinking we were doing a good thing, we began feeding our cats a bit of wet food as a supplement. The oldest was getting a little underweight, and the vet thought it might help bulk her up. For the others, it was a treat. Little did we know at the time that – after years of being staunch kibble feeders – the wet food we were experimenting with would soon be flagged as part of the 2007 pet food recall. Since it was only a supplement, the melamine-tainted wet food didn't kill them immediately.

Q died March 27, 2008 at 15 years of age.

MayDay died Sept 13, 2008, 16 years.

Bassie died May 11, 2010, 19 years.

This afternoon, Nikita left us at the tender age of 12.

As the youngest of the group to be poisoned, it was not surprising that Nikita lasted the longest. But her litter mates are still thriving in other homes, and she had a far shorter life than her adopted feline family. At first, she seemed relatively unaffected, but she took a turn for the worse after Q passed away. He looked almost identical to her mother cat, and we’re convinced that she woke up after the ride to our house and thought, “Wow, ma, you've grown!" Q was fine with this, grooming her, letting her sleep tucked into his belly even when she was almost as big as him. His death affected her personality; I’m not sure she ever stopped grieving.

In her last year, Nikita took three medications twice a day. She ranged in weight from just under 5 to a maximum of nearly 7 lbs, after spending most of her life twice that size. To keep her healthy, we not only fed her a limited ingredient diet (the novel protein was easier on her system), but also a prescription food for cats in acute medical crisis.

But before all that happened, Nikita was a terror in the best kind of way. She was named “Spock” by the friends whose cat queened her. This was because she had a triangular face and gawky, pointed ears to go with a healthy smattering of spots. But we wanted an X-Files cat, so we named her “Frohike” to match her wild coat and rimmed eyes. That lasted until her first vet appointment when we learned that HE was a SHE. After tossing around “Scully,” “Xena: Warrior Kitten” and a few other equally wrong names, we landed on “Nikita.” La Feline Nikita was a huntress with a soft side, scaling the scratching post with a howl of kitten determination, then scampering off to her double life as an average, everyday puss. It was perfect.

Nikita earned many other names as time went on: Nikitakeet, Mouser Mecha Brat Cat, Mouser, Brat Cat, Bratling, Box Cat, KiKi, KiKi Bear, Bear Cat, and Baby Girl. Later on, she was also dubbed: The Monitor, The Supervisor, Head Gray, Crochety, Little Bony, and Granny. She never lost her sense of humor, tolerating the newbies as we adopted them, even – eventually – joining in the cuddle puddle (but, oh, they had to curry favor with her for months before she deigned). She ruled the roost from high points like the entertainment center, and from low points like the kitty hammock (HERS, TYVM) and whatever box she could get into. She played fetch, though it was sometimes abbreviated to “throw.” She was the cat who assisted me most in the bathroom, be it ensuring I never peed alone, or holding down my PJs while I showered (she also liked to lick my toes dry - weirdo!). She was also a most excellent Nikita Harp long before a couple of engineers on YouTube dubbed it "Corporal Cuddling."

Nikita never minded having her intolerance of cuddling exploited for humor. She gave as good as she got, especially with our friend Susan (they were best bitching buddies). I chose this picture as Nikita's memorial shot because it sums that up so perfectly. The "ewww" on her face isn't an accident, nor did Nick shed a single drop of blood. Though I did carefully examine the mirrors for fur-oriented retaliation the next few times I changed the lens...

Nikita, sweetie, I know Q has already found you, and you are curled up against his belly, purring away while MayDay and Bassie watch over you both. Peace be yours tonight, baby girl.

Nikita: Born Sept 11, 1999. Died May 16, 2011.

As my husband said, “At least she outlived Bin Laden.”

www.flickr.com/groups/petfoodrecall/

Spice Girl died of kidney failure after eating (in a 5 day period) 3 meals of sliced chicken/turkey in gravy - Iams. We bought it in error, the cats did not like it, but that week it got used for her by mistake. The recall had just been announced, but Iams was not on the list when I checked, and I didn't find out until too late. Tthe cans were gone, etc.

She was a tiny red Abyssinian, absolutely beautiful, but her temperament made her totally impossible to show. It was like having your own cattly Tinker Bell. She was elemental, a fairy, a sprite, a pixie, a wild thing you had to tame to eat from your hand. She was also my work buddy, there while I worked glass, or painted. She performed all her cattly duties, like following in front when you walked, sitting on your newspaper in the exact spot you needed to
read, wanting head butts.

She also, starting with catnip mice and graduating to the real thing, did the most graceful balletic mouse dance, and I once was privileged to see her do a mighty display of Kat Kung Fu which totally confounded and subdued her chaser - hefty Cairn terrier. It's amazing how lethal 8 pounds of solid muscle and sharp claws can be. Truth to tell, she was not the brightest cat by any means. There wasn't enough room in that elegant little head for brains, but she was vibrant and alive, and deserved a better fate.

The FDA is testing THE HUMAN FOOD SUPPLY for melamine now.

FDA Suspects Tainted Chicken, Human Food Finally Being Tested for Melamine
April 24th, 2007

FDA will begin testing for melamine in the human food supply after investigating chicken farms and the expansion of tainted pork. This is more than a month after the first pet food recall was announced.

In addition, the FDA on Tuesday announced plans to expand testing of the animal food supply after hogs on farms in three states were quarantined after testing positive for the substance at the center of the recall, the toxic agent melamine.

A poultry farm in Missouri is also being investigated, federal officials said.

Pig Contamination Expands to NY, Utah, NC, SC, and Possibly Ohio
April 24th, 2007

Reuters is reporting that pigs in several states may have been fed tainted pet food.

“I don’t have the numbers on that right now but it potentially affects thousands of hogs,” Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, told reporters. “Some of the hog operations were fairly sizable.”

Livestock feed that may have been contaminated with ingredients imported from China was sent to hog farms in North and South Carolina, California, New York, Utah and “possibly” Ohio, he said.

SmartPak Dog Food Recalled
April 24th, 2007

SmartPak recalled LiveSmart Weight Management Chicken and Brown Rice Dog Food on April 20.

Their recall is attributed to rice protein from Wilbur-Ellis, not the unnamed second importer.

Full recall announcement after the jump.

We took him to the vet yesterday just to make sure it wasn't related to that awful, ongoing pet food recall (it wasn't). We think this morning, he turned the corner toward getting better. But, he still looks so dang sad!

They want food!

Our pet food, Natural Balance, entered the crazy pet food recall today. We no longer trust the brand and the pet store we bought it from has pulled all Natural Balance products from the shelf. Apparently they are just as pissed as we are at Natural Balance. There was some sort of addition to the food recently that they may not have listed on the ingredients panel yet. The contaminated food "may" contain melamine.

So Clint pulled the cats' food at lunchtime today and he is on his way home with new food. In the meantime, the cats revolt.

Their health better not be affected.

Fanny loves her bubbles :)

I hate coming back to this subject but please keep watching what is happening with the pet food recalls. A few days ago, Natural Balance pulled 2 varieties of dry food, one cat and one dog. They did this immediately upon receiving complaints that animals were throwing up and having kidney problems after eating the food. The FDA has now done their thing and they found melamine in the food. The very, very bad part of this story is that Menu Foods does not make Natural Balance foods. Natural Balance foods contain no wheat gluten. The melamine was found in the RICE gluten Natural Balance uses in some of their products. Natural Balance says the rice gluten came from a US supplier but they haven't given the name.

The main reason why I'm saying anything about this is I don't want anyone's pet to get sick from these horrible problems with our pet food supply. I will provide some links to help anyone who needs help with this mess.

Tags: pet   menu   foods   sam   recall
I'm posting this photo for Sam's people in the Pet Food Recall Photo Gallery:
www.flickr.com/groups/petfoodrecall/

This is Sam. Sam was born in Shanghai, China in mid-April, 1993. We met her, fell in love and adopted her in early May. Although we did not know it at the time, Sam was totally deaf which is common in pure-white cats and she had the loudest voice of any cat we had ever known. Actually, because of her voice, we called her Sammy Jay after the squawky blue jay in the Burgess classical children’s story but somehow that got shortened to Sam, which seemed right.

Learning how to deal with a deaf cat was a whole new learning curve for us. It took a lot more patience and understanding. Unless she was looking directly at you, every movement startled Sam, as she had no advance warning by sound. When she was a kitten and happened to fall asleep when we were in the same room with her and we left while she was still sleeping, when she woke up, she would cry out in a very loud voice until we went to show her that we were still there. Being deaf made Sam seem more vulnerable and dependent on us and made us love her even more.

Sam was not a cuddly cat, but she was a good cat and gave us all the love she had inside of her. She was feisty and always let you know what she liked and wanted or didn’t like, in that very loud voice. All she ever asked of us was to be fed at regular times (she always let us know if we were off schedule) and to be there when she wanted us around. Sam loved to play and up until she got sick, she was very active.

Sam got sick in mid March. Our veterinarian ran blood tests which showed that her kidneys were failing and she was scheduled to start treatment the next day. That night, while watching the late news, we first saw the report on the tainted cat food recall. Because the cat food we were using was named, we immediately checked the internet and discovered that the cat food we were feeding Sam contained the serial numbers of the tainted food. We were devastated. Needless to say, neither of us slept that night. The next morning, we took the food to our vet in the hope that knowing this might help in her treatment. For seven days, Sam went every day for treatment. Our vet was so good to her, he tried very aggressively to help her, even including surgery, but we were too late. Her kidneys had been too badly damaged. Sam died on March 27, 2007 a little after 6:00 p.m., in my husband’s arms.

Some of you may say – why get so upset, it was just a cat. But to us Sam was a member of our family, she depended on us to look after her and protect her. Like all the other cats and dogs affected, Sam was an innocent and did not deserve this fate. Because of her deafness, Sam was unable to even get comfort from the sound of our voices trying to sooth her. She will be remembered in our hearts.

Nick doesn't understand how innocent pets could be poisoned by their food, so he and Lucy helped me write this letter to Congresspersons Dick Durbin (IL) and Rosa DeLauro (CT):
Dear Ms. DeLauro & Mr. Durbin,
THANK YOU for asking the FDA for details related to the tainted Menu Foods pet food. I have 2 cats who, thank goodness, are okay. But my heart breaks for pets and owners impacted by this horrible tragedy. Imagine the guilt of having fed your pet what caused their death?

No pet owner should have to wonder if they are feeding their pet tainted food, nor wonder which brands are most likely *not* tainted. If the pet food chain is subject to this type of issue, it makes one wonder about vulnerabilities of the human food chain.

There must also be a system put into place to alert veterinarians to pet health hazards such as the tainted food.

Again, I am so grateful for your action to protect our pets and help all of us pet owners understand what went wrong (so that it may never happen again).
Karen

Impact to date -
Based on veterinarian reports, over 470 pets have been made ill or died; self-reported cases currently number 1,924 deceased pets (1,095 cats/829 dogs) as of 7pm PDT March 26, 2007.

Today the ASPCA reports that, based on these data, clinical signs reported in cats affected by the contaminated foods are not fully consistent with the ingestion of rat poison containing aminopterin that, according to Menu Foods, is at the “root” of the contamination issue.
“We’ve seen reports coming in from all around the country that animals that were eating the contaminated foods are definitely suffering from renal failure,” said Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and senior vice president with the ASPCA, who manages the ASPCA’s Midwest Office, including the APCC. “But the data that we’ve been collecting do not conclusively prove this connection, which is why we strongly recommend that those involved in the investigation continue to search for additional contaminants.”

Just when the pet food recall seemed it couldn't get any more horrifying... the latest on the Menu Foods cat and dog food recall: CNN

See howl911 for an update about affected foods -- another Nutro food is suspected of also being tainted (see text in red on the linked web site) although not under recall:
www.howl911.com/#foods

Recall has been expanded to include all 95 brands of the "cuts and gravy" style food, regardless of production date (from Yahoo news @ news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070323/ap_on_re_us/pet_food_recall_36 )
ALBANY, N.Y. - Rat poison was found in pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs, but scientists said Friday they still don't know how it got there and predicted more animal deaths would be linked to it. After the announcement, the company that produced the food expanded its recall to include all 95 brands of the "cuts and gravy" style food, regardless of when they were produced. The company also said it would take responsibility for pet medical expenses incurred as a result of the food.

Menu Foods' 3/23/2007 news conference video: www.9wsyr.com/mediacenter/local.aspx?videoid=193689

Some of the pets affected have developed kidney failure. Kidney failure is a serious condition and can either develop rapidly or over a long period of time. Pets that are in kidney failure can exhibit the following symptoms:
* increased water intake
* increased urination
* decreased appetite
* vomiting
* lethargy
Note that these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions -- nonetheless, contact your vet if your pet is exhibiting these symptoms.

Interesting information from Pet Food Express about other brands (not being recalled) that are also manufactured by Menu Foods.

Lisacat has founded a Flickr group for pets affected by the recall:

Flickr Pet food recall (canned & foil pouches)

(Screen grab from www.menufoods.com/recall/product_cat.html.) If you want to re-use this image to help get the word out to other pet owners, please feel free.

This news is also being discussed on Best of Cats, in a discussion thread located at flickr.com/groups/bestofcats/discuss/72157600003752618/ (thanks, jciv, for posting that alert!)

Summary: Several brands of canned and foil pouch pet food (both cat and dog food) manufactured by Menu Foods are being recalled. The list in this image is *not* the full list of brands -- Iams, Eukanuba and Science Diet have also joined this recall (see comments posted below for more info and links to those web sites.)

Major pet food recall by a manufacturer that producess wet food for many private label (store brand) and national pet food brands. Affected animals have developed kidney disease and some have died. Please note that only specific production dates were impacted (that information is available on www.menufoods.com/recall but is in excel format). (Why didn't they use an easily accessible format like PDF?)

The manufacturers' web site was down yesterday (web server apparently couldn't handle the increased load). I was able to access the web site today and downloaded each excel file for each brand -- I'm in the process of compiling one comprehensive list and will convert it to PDF.

I'm concerned the manufacturers' site will *again* get overloaded and want to post the PDF file I'm creating on a web site so it can be more easily accessed by Best of Cats members -- if you know of someone who could host the file on their web site, please send me a flickrmail.

If you feed your dog Dick van Patten's Natural Balance dry food, please be warned the venison and rice variety has been linked to illness and kidney problems. In addition, the venison and green pea dry CAT food is also problematic.

You should discontinue use right away -- as we did this morning. Mick has had some digestive distress off and on over the past couple of weeks. We are going to check in with the vet this morning.

There is some (very little) information on the company's web site: www.naturalbalanceinc.com. We're hoping for more information soon!

I cooked breakfast for our spoiled little pup this morning: rice, chicken and carrots. He was thrilled!

In light of the recent news about the PET FOOD RECALLS I decided to post an article and my recipe for Sam's Healthwise Rawfood Cakes on my blog. If you are interested in an alternative to even the best comercially prepared dog food, you might want to check out my recipe and blog post.

Our Beloved Tucker - April 15, 2001 - March 6, 2007
An exceptional cat whom never met a human he didn't like.
I posted what happened at the head of this set. We're heartbroken and still wishing to wake up to it being a bad dream.

Thank you dear ones for your heartfelt comments on my kitty Tucker. Thank you Darlene for the wonderful picture ... it made me smile and conveys the warm loving person you are. You are a very special lady.
Here is my little Tucker, I will do a tribute page for him on here soon as I have a moment to breathe.
I will miss him terribly .. he was one of a kind. We're in the denial stage right now ... and seeing him at every turn in the house. He was still a baby for heavens sake. His little companion Sophie is staying close to me ... she has never been without him so this will be hard for her too. She got to say goodbye before he died which sent me balling my eyes out.
Love you all and appreciate your kindness. HUUUUGGGGS, Joy

OMG ... Bless your heart Darlene, what a sweet ... very touching thing to do! Thank you so much to you all for your support and hugs. We'll get through okay but geez it's one of those times when you say "Enough Already". Our Tucker was only six which makes it extremely hard especially when he was fine only a couple of weeks ago. NO signs of anything this wrong. Sophie his other half is wandering around to his spots sniffing and then staying really close to me. They both graced our home at the same time almost 6 years ago from totally different litters and only three weeks apart. This all came about after losing our 16 year old cat Triscat to feline leukemia. The day I went to pick up Trissy's ashes is when I met Sophie at the vet. She had been abandoned by her momma and was only two weeks old. I held her, she bit my nose and that was it! The vet kept her and took care of her until she was ready to come home with me. Meanwhile my daughter brought Tucker home from a litter her friends barn cat had and he just melted our hearts too with is blue eyes so we now had two kitties to bless our days with silliness and love at a time when the loss was so fresh.
Tucker was one of a kind, very docile, friendly, no hissing, no scratching nor biting. He is the kind of cat you can dress up and put in the baby buggy .. or was. He was a big kitty too ...at one point almost 20 lbs. but after he got hit by a car and survived he lost some and stuck at around 14lbs. but not fat either.
My daughter picked up his ashes yesterday so now he and Trissy will have a place with us still as we don't have a home of our own to bury them in a special place.
Now he is my little Tucky Angel and I can picture him being led around by Trissy and all of our past dogs and cats showing him the ropes across the Rainbow Bridge. I know he will always be in my heart and am so very grateful to have had him grace our lives with such an abundance of antics that will make us smile when we think of him.
I really am thankful for having my friends whom understand and care enough to lighten my heart and make me smile. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here. Soon as I get a chance I want to do a little tribute page for him to share and also have to do a kind of scrapbook spread for my daughter who he chose to come home with at the time.
Now, no need to worry about us, tears are inevitable and good for you, we have been through tougher times than this but as you know ... these kinds of things tug at the heart strings so hard. We've started this year out with two very sad deaths in the family, my husband getting injured at work and now our Tucky ... such is life and we will survive. Like I said we have been through worse ... long story another time.
So dear ones I wish for you to all have a safe and happy weekend and send each of you hugs for caring. Flickr has become another haven of friendship for which I am truly thankful. Please give your furbabies a cuddle for me and take care.
Be well my friends, love yas, Joy

As it turns out as I add this now (end of March), Tucker's demise might very well be linked to the recent and ongoing pet food recall here in N. America. I fed him one of the Named foods a couple of weeks before he died. All of his symptoms in the end are identical to what they have said to look out for. This is making it all the more heartbreaking. He wasn't ill prior and in good health ... as well as being a young cat. You just never know. My vet agrees too so now, all the appropriate measures are being taken to add our name to the list of pet owners who have lost a dear sweet furbaby to this horrible nightmare. :o{

Flickr IMPORTANT: It was RAT POISON in the pet food
Tags: animal   cat   fanny   glutenfree
Hi all - at least one of the contaminants in the pet food was 'Aminopterin' which is a substance used as rat poison in some countries (not the US according to what I've heard on the news so far). The news piece I heard said that the wheat gluten was the suspected source of the poison. The wheat gluten came from China. THEY ARE NOT CERTAIN WHETHER OR NOT THE CONTAMINANT MADE IT TO THE HUMAN FOOD SUPPLY.

It is a good time to have a gluten free diet.

The radio bit I heard interviewed the CEO of Menu Foods who said that all cuts and gravy style foods are being recalled regardless of manufacture date.

One article I found on the web. I'll look for more. No new press release from FDA or Menufoods or any other food company yet.

I use my hands. The color of Sam's food varies depending on which fruits and veggies I use and how much of each. If you don't want "gray" food (Sam doesn't care, but it might bother some cooks) don't add blueberries.

I bet most of you have already read about the dog and cat food recalls by some of the major pet food brands. To me, this news makes it even more important to think carefully about what we are feeding our pets.

For the Sam's Healthwise Rawfood Cakes recipe, please read this article -- there are lots of links to both the recent news about dog and cat food recalls, plus to my detailed recipe for a healthy, balanced raw food diet for dogs.

I've had inquiries asking me about the food we make for Sam -- mostly wondering how I ever have time to make his food myself. It took me longer to prepare his food when I first started -- but now that I've been doing it for years, and have refined my techniques, it literally takes me less than 1 hour every two weeks, to prepare a big batch of the food.

Think about how much time you spend watching television or other activities. Can you find two to four hours a month to spend in your kitchen making food that you KNOW is healthy and balanced, for your pets -- and that will probably add years to their life?

Pet Food Recall Photo Gallery group: www.flickr.com/groups/petfoodrecall/

My kitty, Harley, got ill from eating Nutro
Natural Choice food. He started
chronically vomiting (which was strange for him)
and one day he vomited 6
times -- I took him to the vet the next morning.
The morning the recall hit
the news. He is doing much better now that he has
been treated and stopped
eating the food. We have been very lucky, he is a
young cat. My condolences
to all who have lost their pet or who's pets have
been struck ill by this.

Harley -- loves to be "scritched" on the chin,
loves to chase his tiny
catnip mice wherever they go, loves to curl up
and sleep next to us.

UPDATE 3/25/07: Penguin, a BARC "lifer" and a favorite of many Cat Loft volunteers, recently died of kidney failure. We don't know for sure if it was from eating the recalled food but it's a possibility.

I've set up a group here on flickr where people can post a photo of their pets who have been affected by the Menu Foods recall and all recalls past and, god help us, future. If you are following the story you've seen the faces on the news and maybe read some of the heart-rending tales of veterinary visits, recovery or brave and humane euthanasia. Many of us who have been lucky would like to know a little about the dogs and cats, puppies and kittens and see who they are or...were. We're putting together some resources for grief counseling and support in the discussion area. For those who have been affected it's a place to find support and maybe some comfort from the amazing flickr animal people. Even if your pets are ok, come by and leave a comment, you know how nice it makes you feel to get those anonymous encouraging words on your photos!

we had to take rascal + lucy to the vet yesterday because results from their tuesday blood tests showed elevated levels of toxins due to eating food that was on the recall list. they are at the kitty hospital on IVs until friday, and then they will run another test in order to see if the levels have come down.

we heard about the recall this past saturday, and at first, thought it was only nutro wet food (which our girls were eating). but, the list of cat + dog foods is very long. we switched their food immediately + scheduled them a vet appointment. hopefully, we got to this before it has done any major damage on their kidneys. but, the vet just doesn't know right now. she said that they really don't know any more than we do right now about this food scare; they are on the internet all day long trying to find out news as it happens, just like any other person. the menu foods company has not told them anything else.

we miss you, girls. can't wait to visit you again tonight!

IMPORTANT FOR CAT AND DOG OWNERS: In case you have not noticed in the news, Menu Foods (one of the largest 'wet' style pet food manufacturers in North America) announced a major recall yesterday. The exact brand and lot numbers were not released until this morning. There are many brands being recalled !! If you feed your cat or dog wet food you need to check on the Menu Foods web site and also on the Iams web site, if you are feeding Iams, to make sure that you don't feed your pets any recalled food. I did notice that some of the food was manufactured for distribution in the UK. So it might not be just North Americans that need to check. The brand I noticed food for the UK on was Iams, but I did not check every single brand.

Scientific American (sciam.com) used this picture of Mao for a story regarding the recall on 03/28/07, one month after Mao's death.

This is a picture of my boy Mao. I adopted him as a stray kitten in Asheville, NC in 1998. I worked in a record/cd store and one of my coworkers brought in a box with a blue eyed fuzzy kitten. She found him alone by the side of the road and planned to take him to the pound. I couldn't bear the thought of this sweet kitten heading to the pound, so that's how Mao and I met. He was fairly loud and demanding as a kitten, so I dubbed him Chairman Mao. I later found out Mao meant cat in Chinese. When I would call him, "Maomao," he would run to me and say, "Mao!"

He was patient kitty and dear companion. He put up with moves to Athens, Georgia. Flew on a plane with me to San Beranrdino, California, then finally settled with me in Charlotte, NC. He's been the one constant in my life the past 9 1/2 years.

At the end of this past February, he stopped eating. I took him to his vet and was told he had late stage kidney failure with off the chart readings. I made the decision to have him put to sleep. I stayed up all night with him, took pictures, and sobbed. He'd lay his head on my arm trying to comfort me. He was such a sweet empathetic creature.

I found out a couple of weeks ago about the recall. I fed Mao Iams Select Bites in Gravy daily before his sudden death. I am livid. I'm going to speak out on this issue as much as possible. I don't want Mao or the thousands of other animals to have died in vain. Menu Foods does not deserve protection.

From Cali's person, Jllouise: "Hi,
I really appreciate your Pet Food Recall Photo Gallery. I would like to include my beloved companion animals who were made very sick by Iams Multi Cat dry cat food.
Cali is my angel, my beloved feline companion. Cali has liver damage and is on daily multiple medications. I love her to the moon and back and cannot imagine my life without her.  She is getting tired of all the liquid medications and pills, although I give them to her as gently as possible.  Cali loves to sleep with her big dog, Paisley. She also enjoys sleeping in bed with me, under the covers with her head on my pillow. I just love her so much!!"
