Cops in Longwood, Florida, got a report this week that a young, blonde woman was sitting idly in a car parked outside of a Big Lots. The caller said she looked "stoned out of her face." When police arrived they found her clutching a crack pipe and had a two-week-old baby strapped in a car seat in the back.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, an officer arrived at the scene and knocked on the woman's front window. Though her eyes were open, she didn't immediately show any signs of responding to the knock. After the third knock she starred at the officer for several seconds and then finally rolled down her window.

The officer noticed that the woman was holding a glass pipe usually used for smoking crack cocaine. The woman struggled as the officer tried to confiscate the pipe and eventually threw it under the car.

She was eventually taken to the hospital for observation, but when asked to give a urine sample she only provided a cup full of warm water.

The officers also found the 15-day-old baby in the backseat. The child was unharmed, and is now in the custody of his father.

One thrill-seeking exhibitionist has been arrested after allegedly masturbating in open view of other motorists on Highway 484 in Ocala, Florida and trying to bite a police officer with 'a love tap'.

Thirty-five-year old Ashley Holton caused traffic along the busy highway to back-up for 30 minutes with some drivers reportedly performing illegal u-turns to get a second look.

According to witnesses, Holton was wearing nothing more than a pink shirt when she decided to pull her car over and pleasure herself in front of the passing motorists.

Havoc on the roadside: Woman accused of performing sex act , exposing herself to motorists

By Barbara Hijek June 1, 2012 07:22 AM

weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/news/specials/weirdflorida/blog/...

Deputies responded to a report of a woman wearing only a pink shirt and exposing her private parts while masturbating in public under an I-75 overpass in Ocala, according to an arrest affidavit from the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

The woman, later identified as Ashley Lynn Holton, then pulled up the pink shirt and her
bra to expose breasts and vagina to the deputy and motorists passing by in cars, according to the arrest record.

The 35-year-old Troy, Alabama woman resisted attempts to place handcuffs on her wrists by twisting and turning both her arms and body. Once handcuffed and placed in a patrol car, she then reportedly began kicking the patrol car windows, the report stated.

When a deputy opened the patrol car door to tell her to calm down, Holton allegedly kicked the deputy's leg.

A witness told the deputy several cars honked at Holton's vulgar performance, which only seemed to encourage the defendant to continue. The witness estimated Holton had been exposing herself for 30-40-minutes before the deputy had arrived, according to the report.

As you can imagine, traffic was impacted.

Another witness told the deputy traffic had backed up as numerous cars did illegal U‐turns to watch.

At the jail, when a female correction officer with inmate clothing tried to put pants on Holton, she kicked the officer and then bit her her on the arm.

Holton reportedly called the bite a "love tap".

The 5'4" 138-lb. woman from Alabama then continued her XXX-rated show at the jail, resisting officers by spreading her legs and exposing herself and telling the officers to kiss her — before biting — or rather love tapping — two other officers, the report states.

Flickr THE FREEDOM TOWER, MIAMI

Originally completed in 1925 as the headquarters and printing facility of the newspaper The Miami News, the Freedom Tower is an example of Mediterranean Revival style with design elements borrowed from theGiralda Tower in Seville, Spain. Its cupola on a 255 foot (78 m) tower contained a decorative beacon.

The Miami News vacated the building in 1957 to relocate to a new facility on the Miami River. As refugees from Cuba fleeing the Fidel Castro's communist regime arrived in Miami during the 1960s, the federal government used the facility to process, document and provide medical and dental services for the newcomers. After the major era of refugees ended in 1972, the government sold the building to private ownership in 1974. In 1979, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Freedom Tower, located at 600 Biscayne Blvd on the Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College, was originally built in 1925 as the headquarters and printing facility of the newspaper The Miami News. The Mediterranean Revival style design by George A. Fuller, Schultze & Weaver, which features a 225-foot tower, borrows elements from the Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain. The Miami News relocated to a new facility along the Miami River in 1957, and the federal government used the facility during the 1960's to process, document and provide medical and dental services for Cuban refugees fleeing Fidel Castro's communist regime.

In 1997, the building was purchased by Jorge Mas Canosa, initiator of the Cuban American National Foundation, and restored and converted into a monument for the refugees who fled to the United States from communist Cuba. It housed a museum, library, meeting hall, and the offices of the Cuban American National Foundation. In 2004, the Freedom Tower was purchased by developer Pedro Martin and his company, Terra Group, who proposed a new building on an adjacent part of the property. Preservationists opposed the plan, and during 2005 the developers donated Freedom Tower to Miami Dade College, which is using it as a cultural and educational center.

Preservationists opposed the plan, and during 2005 the developers donated Freedom Tower to Miami Dade College, which is using it as a cultural and educational center.

the Freedom Tower is a 1925 building in Miami,, Florida, designed by Schultze and Weaver. It is used currently as a memorial to Cuban immigration to the United States. It is located at 600 Biscayne Boulevard on the Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College. On September 10, 1979, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark on October 6, 2008

History

Originally completed in 1925 as the headquarters and printing facility of the newspaper The Miami News, it is an example of Mediterranean Revival style with design elements borrowed from the Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain.
In 1979, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[4]
In 1997 the building was purchased for US$4.1 million by Jorge Mas Canosa, initiator of the Cuban American National Foundation, and restored and converted into a monument for the refugees who fled to the United States from communist Cuba. It housed a museum, library, meeting hall, and the offices of the Cuban American National Foundation.
In 2004, the Freedom Tower was purchased by developer Pedro Martin and his company, Terra Group, who proposed a new building (possibly condominiums) on an adjacent part of the property. Preservationists opposed the plan, and during 2005 the developers donated Freedom Tower to Miami Dade College, which is using it as a cultural and educational center. The city later granted approval to the developers to build on the back of the property without demolishing the original tower.
More recently, Miami Dade College has hosted major exhibitions including showcasing the works of masters Dali, Goya and Da Vinci since the Martin family donated the tower to the institution. It has plans to expand the offerings at the Tower and install exhibitions commemorating the Freedom Tower’s past as the home of a major newspaper and the site where hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees were processed. The college will also commemorate the building’s architecture. It recently restored The New World Mural, Painted by The Miami Artisans in 1988. Wade S. Foy, John Conroy, William Mark Coulthard, Phylis Shaw, Gerome Villa Bergsen and Ana Bikic

Felix Gonzalez, 27, and Jose Romero, 28, were arrested 90 miles east of Miami yesterday after they allegedly bought three bales of marijuana from a Coast Guard officer. The officer was aboard a 65-foot boat seized Tuesday and at the time was being escorted into Miami, the Coast Guard said."

Flickr Can anyone decipher this name?
Tags: artist   henry   painter   parker   henryparker
I really like a couple of prints by this artist. I can't make out his name for the life of me.

If you can help me decipher this name, I'd be grateful.

It's an artist who does stormy dark illustrative caricatures of lighthouse seascapes. I saw his working hanging on the wall of a place in Myrtle Beach, SC. I'm fascinated by his style and would like to track down prints.

I can make out "Henry" and then the rest of a combination of crossed Ts and Xs or something?

UPDATE: The name is Henry Parker! Thanks Pete Scully

Not the famous Henry H. Parker... just Henry Parker:

"Henry Parker was born in 1938, Norristown, PA. He later moved to Cape May, NJ, where he spent his early years. He then moved to England, where he studied art near London. In 1958, Parker won an art scholarship to study at the University of Miami’s Lowe Gallery.

The Miami News said of Mr. Parker: “Henry Parker’s paintings… do not glamorize the sea. The artist portrays the sea in some of its most forbidding moods as well as at the most translucently delightful times, when the early sun shines through the mist and strikes the waves, crating an unearthly transparency” Nellie Bower, Miami News Art Critic."

And this is me leading off the local section of the paper with a story about a man found insane after beheading his girlfriend and walking down the street nekkie with her head. At the time this article was written he was seeking release from custody. He was all better now, he claimed. I can't remember if the case was resolved before the paper closed, so I can't remember what ultimately happened.

An interesting story to show further I was in the right business: I had cultivated a great relationship with a defense attorney who was representing a member of a cult on a murder charge. I was arranging the terms under which I would get the first interview with this guy after he finished cooperating with the feds.

Then the paper closed.

Later, the feds would use the information the guy had given them along with other evidence to bring a huge criminal investigation against the cult itself, its leaders and some other members. I had moved to DC by the time the arrests and seizures went down.

One day I made a long distance call to speak with the woman who worked the same beat as I, but for the Miami Herald. It was a catching up phone call.

And also a congratulatory call: the Herald had just won a Pulitzer Prize for spot news reporting on the shut down of the cult (yep, the story I had been nursing until I lost the paper that allowed me to do so). She was part of the team of reporters who shared the prize.

I have had a cornucopia of late year losses in my life - including the death of this little newspaper that was my life.

This is a principle reason why I don't keep alcohol in my house.

I actually have the nerve to believe that I have good reason for considering this time of year less than festive:

My Birth Mother died in December.
My Dad died in November
And my first fulltime journalism job died when the paper closed in December (with me having no clue what to do next or how to do it.)

I was going through some stuff trying to find things to throw out when I stumbled on some old papers containing stories I had written. Maurice Miller/Miami News Reporter was second only to I am my father's son in terms of phrases I never wanted to stop hearing.

And once again I have to deal with the drumbeat that says I must "move on". I wish those who promote that attitude would some day take time to sit down with me and try to explain what the fuck it is supposed to mean and why I am not justified in feeling they are full of shit for preaching that. There are GAPING holes in my life and their bandaids simply aren't fucking working.

Anyway, here's proof at least that I am not full of shit by stating that I was a journalist, I loved it and was damn good at it. During its last stages of life, The Miami News served as the much smaller afternoon daily competition to the much more known Miami Herald.

During the last couple of year's of the paper's life, my beat was state criminal and civil courts. This is a front page story about an infamous Saudi Arabian sheik who had left the country for his homeland - and left Miami with millions in uncompleted projects and debts. This story was about his quest to make "financial amends" as it were.

So there I am. I'm too tired and too depressed to make the shot less crappy. Sorry that this is such a downer post. But the meds aren't working worth shit, and at some point today I still have other stuff to go through and/or rearrange.

As one of my favorite former television journalists, Linda Ellerbee, used to say:

And so it goes.....

Originally completed in 1925 as the headquarters and printing facility of the Miami News & Metropolis newspaper, it is an example of Mediterranean Revival style with design elements borrowed from the Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain. Its cupola on a 255 foot (78 m) tower contained a decorative beacon.

In the 1950s The Miami News vacated the building to move to a new state-of-the-art facility on the Miami River. In 1973, The Miami News moved to share facilities with the rival Miami Herald at their plant on Biscayne Bay until going out of business in 1988. As refugees from the Castro regime arrived in Miami, the federal government used the facility to process, document and provide medical and dental services for the newcomers. After the first major wave of refugees ended in 1972, the government sold the building. Passing through several owners with various development ideas, the building was eventually sold in 1997 when a prominent and controversial member of the Cuban-American community, Jorge Mas Canosa, purchased the building for US$4.1 million.

The building was restored and converted into a monument for the refugees who fled to the United States from communist Cuba. It houses a museum, library, meeting hall, and the offices of the Cuban American National Foundation.

Recently the Freedom Tower was purchased by developer Terra who wished to demolish 75 feet (23 m) of the original tower and develop 683 condominium units. A group of preservationist organized and successfully stopped the demolition, Miami Dade County Preservationists included Armando Gutierrez, Rafael Penalver, Richard Heisenbottle and Dade Heritage Trust. The developers were unable to gain approval. The developers then donated the Freedom tower to Miami-Dade College, which plans to use it as a monument to the Cuban community. The city later granted approval to the developers to build on the back of the property without demolishing the original tower.

Currently, the Freedom Tower is used as an Art gallery, having housed the New World School of the Arts BFA show, and exhibitions through the Miami Art Museum displaying work from famous artist Francisco Goya as well as Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller "The Killing Machine & Other Stories"

Miami-Dade County, FL
Listed: 09/27/1972
Designated an NHL: 06/19/96

The Miami Biltmore Hotel and Country Club was designed by the firm of Schultze and Weaver whose expertise gained them a national reputation for hotel design in a variety of architectural styles. The Mediterranean Revival style chosen for this project was the dominant theme of Coral Gables architecture at that time.

The Miami-Biltmore Hotel and Country Club, designed as one of the most luxurious and modern hotels of its time, opened on January 14, 1926. During an opening banquet, John McEntee Bowman, president of the Bowman-Biltmore Hotel Corporation, described the Miami-Biltmore, in a futuristic manner, as "a 1950 hotel model built like a modern Biltmore noted for its beauty, utility, and endurance." This description certainly suited the vision of Coral Gables' developer, George Merrick, for his meticulously planned community.

Designed by the prominent New York architectural firm of Schultze and Weaver, the Miami-Biltmore is Coral Gables' most notable reminder of the Florida land boom, and is one of the most important monuments of this era in South Florida. During the 1920s, Miami experienced a population explosion. Developers, attracted by Miami's climate and available land, began promoting Miami as an "earthly paradise."

The Miami-Biltmore Hotel's Giralda tower was the third such tower which Schultze and Weaver designed for Miami. The Miami News Tower (Freedom Tower) (1925) and the Roney Plaza Hotel (January 1926) on Miami Beach, both featured this elaborate signature element. A 1926 brochure for the Miami-Biltmore Hotel describes the view while approaching the hotel: "[one] sees in a setting of tropical beauty the towering Giralda rising more than 300 feet above the massive and beautifully proportioned structure below.”

The tower became the most important sight in Coral Gables and is still a highly visible and unique fixture on Miami's skyline, typifying the architectural excellence of South Florida's buildings of that era. Merrick's tropical, Mediterranean paradise was touted from real estate offices all over America and millions were spent on newspaper advertisements.

On September 18, 1926, a devastating hurricane struck Miami with 130-mile-an-hour winds. The Biltmore escaped with only slight damage and took in about 2,000 homeless victims of the hurricane. The hurricane signaled the beginning of the sudden and tragic end of the Florida land boom. Despite the disastrous effects which the hurricane had on South Florida, Merrick and his hotel continued to offer dinner dances, golf tournaments, and aquatic events.

In the 1960's the US Government used the building to process, and provide medical facilities for Cuban political refugees fleeing Cuba's communist revolution, thus the name "Freedom Tower". The Freedom Tower is a building in Miami, Florida, that serves as a memorial to Cuban immigration to the United States. It is located at 600 Biscayne Boulevard. On September 10, 1979, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. This tower is not to be confused with the Freedom Tower in New York expected to be completed in 2010 and open in 2011.

Completed in 1924 and once home to the long-gone Miami News, during the 1960s, offices at the Miami Freedom Tower processed requests for political asylum during the first wave of Cuban immigration. The Miami Freedom Tower was actually modeled on the Giralda bell tower in Seville, Spain, and was closed for a number of years whilst undergoing restorations and the Miami Freedom Tower has recently reopened as a museum of Cuban culture. To fully appreciate the tower's Mediterranean features and detailed architecture as a whole, the Miami Freedom Tower is best viewed from a distance.

The City of Miami known as the "Magic City" is located in Southeast Florida, in Miami-Dade County on the Miami River, between the Florida Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean.

Located in downtown Miami, the park bordered Biscayne Bay and Biscayne Boulevard and featured one of my favorite places, the area I call a rogue port. The area is now a sports arena. At far left is newly completed Omni Hotel, at center are offices of the "Miami Herald/Miami News" newspapers. They received tons of news print paper by barges. Those days are long gone. The property has been sold to a developer and this week the news center failed to receive historic site protection. The "Miami Herald" is moving out of downtown to Doral starting in April. The downtown site will be knocked down and development plans are already underway. The city has rejected plans for building a large casino on the property.

"Miami Herald" and "Miami News" building is shown in middle background. The buildng is embroiled in a debate over whether it should be knocked down or preserved as an historic site. The newspapers received tons of news print paper by barges. Taken from atop Parkleigh House apartments. The iconic Coppertone sign, painted on "Parkleigh House" apartments at 530 Biscayne Boulevard was a famous landmark in the 1970's. The tall brown building at right is the U.S Freedom Tower. The historic building was originally home to the "Miami News" then was was a main welcome center for accepting Cuban refugees in the 1960's, then was abandoned and became home to the homeless. Today it is completely restored and part of the Mimi Dade college system, serving as a museum. One Biscayne Tower, the tall dark building with communication antennae was recently built but still under construction inside. Taken with an antique fold-out billows Voigtlander.

This for sale sign on Miami's Freedom Tower was both humorous and sad. It truly is Miami's Number 1 Skyline Landmark Building. Over the years it went from Headquarters for "The Miami News" to the main processing center for Cuban refugees feeing Cuba, home to the homeless and now is restored as a museum for Dade County.

For this shot I peered through the Tower's front door. I hope to go back someday and get an "after" shot showing restoration. Titled "Miami's Number 1 Landmark Syline Building" the magnificent structure first served as offices for "The Miami News." Later it was the processing center for hundreds of Cuban immigrants, then was abandoned by all but the homeless. Yes, it is a mess, but what else can you expect when water and sewer are urned off. "When you gotta go, you gotta go." Today the structure is totally redone and is part of the Dade County College system. If you go to Miami, visit the Freedom Tower at 600 Biscayne Boulevard and get a picture of the lobby.Taken with an antique fold-out billows Voigtlander and digitized for posting here.

In the 1970's "Miami's Number 1 Landmark-Skyline Building" the abandoned U.S Freedom Tower dominated Miami's downtown area and served as a home to the homeless. The structure originally housed "The Miami News" then in the 1960's it served as a processing center for hundreds of Cuban refugees accepted into America. The iconic Coppertone sign is seen on Parkleigh House apartments where I lived at the time. The building has been knocked down. This photograph was taken about 1973 with an antique fold-out billows Voigtlander on Kodak Tri-XPan film.

Fred L. Foster, manager of the department of aviation, Richfield Oil Corp. of New York, accompanied by his wife and Don Ryan Mockler, landed at municipal airport in a Cessna monoplane, piloted by Eddie Schneider, famous junior American pilot. Mr. Foster, who with his party, is stopping at the Dallas Park Hotel, has not missed a Miami air meet and is a frequent visitor to Florida. Schneider's monoplane is painted in the Richfield colors, blue and cream. The young pilot, who won the junior transcontinental record this summer and followed this by winning the Great Lakes trophy in the National Air Tour, is planning a sensational flight around the world, flying both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, solo.
