"Lyrids"

The best way to look at thing is up. This is especially true for those people that look up to gaze at the stars. The Lyrid Meteor Shower is a annual shower that occurs in April. April 21 and the morning of April 22 will be the peak of the showers for 2013.
I heard about these showers from watching the feeds on Facebook and in the newspaper to see what things are going in the evening sky. This year's main event will be around November with a comet being visible. However until that happens this will have to do.
This is a quick peak view of the Lyrids Meteor Shower from my backyard on the early morning of April 21. My camera was setup just in my backyard on a tripod and I used a intervalometer to take the photos. I took 15 second exposures with a 2 second gap between each image. This particular frame was capture in the early morning around 4am.

Geminid Meteor Shower - Time Shifted

Spent some time to time-shift each meteor to the angle and location it would have appeared if they all occurred at once at the end of the night when Gemini was almost straight up. Some of the meteors were lost since they ended up off the page when time-shifted.

Do you like this one better, or the previous non time-shifted one? Just curious

The Geminids are an annual meteor shower occurring when the Earth passes through the debris tail of asteroid "3200-Phaethon". Most meteor showers originate from comets, which spew tiny chunks of ice that burn in our planet’s atmosphere. Phaethon is not a comet but rather a strange type of asteroid that astronomers sometimes call a “rock comet,” meaning that it is heated when coming close to the sun, producing dusty debris that turn into meteors in Earth’s skies.

Over 100 meteors per hour was predicted to shine during peak hours, between 2 and 3 a.m. on Dec 13 &14. Waited till 2 a.m and got lucky to catch a strong one right where I was pointing my camera. Pretty exciting! For the next one I should go to a dark location to avoid the ambient light

Editor's note: Hello, everyone, and happy Saturday! Tonight is the peak of the 2012 Lyrid meteor shower, and NASA is having a live Web chat later this evening...plus, there's an exciting viewing twist: images from a "balloon-cam floating above Earth, and also images (maybe) from the International Space Station! Details are at: www.nasa.gov/connect/chat/lyrids2012_chat.html. I'll be moderating the chat, so please stop in and say hello! :)

OK, so we were outside braving temps in the low teens looking for meteors from the Geminid meteor shower. You'll have to take my word for it that we saw about 6, but none that showed up on the D3. The battery went dead pretty quick because of the low temps, the spare was a 15 minute hike away. The streak at the bottom of this one is a plane.

This false-color composite view shows the 2008 Geminid meteor shower.

Tonight, Dec. 13, is the peak of the 2010 Geminid meteor shower. It's pretty cold outside in some parts of the world, but you can join NASA experts for two live Web chats and stay out of the cold. One is an afternoon chat, and one is an "up all night" Web chat. Visit this page for details on how to have your questions answered by a NASA expert -- hope to see you there, Flickr friends!

www.nasa.gov/connect/chat/geminids2010.html

About the Geminids

Geminids are pieces of debris from an object called 3200 Phaethon. Long thought to be an asteroid, Phaethon is now classified as an extinct comet. Basically it is the rocky skeleton of a comet that lost its ice after too many close encounters with the sun. Earth runs into a stream of debris from 3200 Phaethon every year in mid-December, causing meteors to fly from the constellation Gemini. When the Geminids first appeared in the late 19th century, shortly before the U.S. Civil War, the shower was weak and attracted little attention. There was no hint that it would ever become a major display.

The previous two days it was too cloudy to try to capture Orionids meteor shower, but for some reason, today on the last day of viewing in our sky, I happened to wake up at 4:45am and decided I would just head out into my back yard and try to capture what I could. I was a little worried being in the city, but the night sky was plenty with stars! I pointed my camera toward Orion in hopes of capturing something with my lens. Meteors were going everywhere but where my lens was pointed and I knew by 5:45 the show was going to be over. It was 5:50 and I still had not caught anything and I gave my last 10 attempts on my camera a go. Well, low and behold on the last shot, a meteor flew across the field of view as you can see down in the lower left of this shot. Not a great shot, but at least I captured one! I was like a kid at Christmas when that last meteor streaked across the sky!

My only meteorite shot from the Perseids Meteor Shower. This was actually taken a day after the peak. The day of the peak I had my camera out but it was my first time doing meteorite photos and I didn't get it set up properly. There's another meteor shower in December, so hopefully I'll go somewhere with less light pollution and get some better luck.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is occurring right now. I drove out past the RIgolets to try and get a clear sky. It actually was a very nice view looking South East. I had NOLA behind me (which is the illumination in this shot) and Slidell off to the North East. But I saw quite a few meteors, so I will say it was worth the drive.

This is a reprocessed version of the meteor shower photo that I made last year. Although the image was really cool, I haven't really been able to be completely happy with it artistically. I have tried processing it several different ways and I still fall short in my satisfaction with the image.

If you missed this shot from last year this is a good chance to check out a photo that took about eight hours to make.

This is a composite that took 360 images taken as 30 second exposures over a three hours period of time. It then took another four, or more, hours to process.

The photo was featured on Google and the Goddard NASA web site. It was also featured in a presentation by Yahoo last year of the years biggest news stories.

I still am not completely happy with the image, but I think I'm getting closer.

The tricks that made this shot were to be patient for three hours as the camera snapped away its 30 second exposures first, and then in post processing to sort through the 300+ images to separate the frames that held a meteor, and then to mask out all but the meteor in the shots prior to layering them onto the base image. But that wasn't the end of the process.

Once the meteors were layered over the base image I had to rotate them to align with their point of origin. Over the course of three hours the Earth rotates and so the point of origin changes. To correct for this I had to use Polaris as a pivot point and then to compute the time in relationship to the position and then rotate the meteor to correspond with that position.

The point of origin is close to the position of the galaxy Perseus, thus the name of the meteor shower.

In all there is over 8 hours of time spent to create this image.

Thank you for the thoughtful comments.

What a long night!!!! I am so tired! Went out about 1 am and went back in at about 4:30. Really disappointed by my first meteor shower photo op!! I don't know if its because we are too close to Chicago, but we did not see that many, and only caught two with the camera. Of course about 1 hour in there was a HUGE one that was out of camera range that got me all psyched about getting a really good one! Oh well!! Better look at this one big so you don't miss the little meteor!!

Perseid Meteor Shower at Trillium Lake Friday morning, August 13, 2010.

I took 360, 30 second exposures to get this one shot. This is an aggregate of the meteors that fell in three hours last night.

Exposure - 30 seconds x 360 exposures
Aperture - f/2.8
Focal Length - 11 mm
ISO Speed - 2000

Basically - This shot was created by taking 360 exposures and then taking the shots that had meteor's in them out and layering them over each other and masking and merging them into the lower layer. I did each layer one at a time.

This shot did not take into consideration the rotation of Earth during the three hours that I was shooting, thus the lack of a common point of origin. I have since compensated using a time/rotation adjustment and recompiled the layers into this image HERE.

We decided to watch the meteor shower in Berkeley, at Tilden Park, and found a spot just above the fog. That layer is the fog that was covering the city.

This was the first time I ever did night photography with slow exposure. I was unprepared - no tripod, hence the slope of some of the photos from this night. I was using the car's hood to stabilize the camera.

This is one of the many meteors we saw in tonights Perseid Meteor shower. We saw some meteors that traveled half way across the sky and left a smoke trail. Unfortunately my shots were not very good because it was too humid. The sky was hazy and the lens of my camera had a film of mist on it after being out for about two hours.
This is a 30 second exposure. f - 2.8. Focal length 16 mm. ISO 400.

So I decided to edit the last photo posted. I increased the exposure about 1 stop. This is what I ended up with

The Perseids meteor shower gave a fun show last night. It was too bad I wasn’t able to stay up for the peak of the shower at 3am. I still had fun though and it gave me a chance to play with my new 10-24mm lens. I took this shot looking straight up at the Milky Way. I tried a few different settings that didn’t work at first. My first thought was to keep my ISO low and use a really long shutter, like 20-30 minutes. Then I decided I wanted to keep the stars still and only capture the movement of the meteors but the problem was that stars aren’t very bright and the meteors are even less bright. After trying a few ISO and shutter settings I settled on the settings I used here. To capture as much of the faint light from the meteors I opened my capture and cranked up my ISO. I found 43 seconds worked the best to keep the stars still but still capture enough light to see the sky with and ISO of 3200 and aperture of f/3.5.

Unfortunately I didn’t capture many meteors but it was fun. Let me know what you think.

View on black (stars stand out better)

Aperture: f/3.5
Shutter: 43 sec.
ISO: 3200
FL: 10mm

I went down to one of my familiar spots to see if a could catch the Perseid meteor shower that was expected.
It was not quite the show I was expecting to see. There was probably one every 2-3 mins and most were to the south west( I was facing west)

I never thought I caught any at all and was plesently surprised when I got home and downloaded the images to view full size.

I don't know how many are from planes as some seem to be taking the same path

Taken at ISO1600 at F2.8 with my trusted Tokina 11-16mm /Nikon D300 mix

I cropped a good bit off the bottom of this image.

I must thank every one who takes the time to comment and fave my shots.
It is appreciated

A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors are observed to radiate from one point in the night sky. These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories. Most meteors are smaller than a grain of sand, so almost all of them disintegrate and never hit the Earth's surface, July and August meteor alert! Showers are typically grand at this time of year. As always, the best time to watch summer meteors will begin in late July and run through about mid-August. In 2010, the waning moon will be in the sky after midnight in late July and through about the first week of August. It’ll interfere with the meteor displays at that time.so grab your chairs and sit somewhere cozy tonights entertainment is the best around and its called the meteor shower, steve

The Geminids are a meteor shower caused by an object named 3200 Phaethon, which is thought to be an extinct comet. The meteors from this shower can be seen in mid-December and usually peak around 12–14 of the month. The Geminid shower is thought to be intensifying every year and recent showers have seen 120–160 meteors per hour under optimal conditions. The Geminids were first observed only 150 years ago, much more recently than other showers such as the Perseids and Leonids.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We visited the Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope visitors Centre this afternoon and it appears that they were tracking the meteor shower. Not quite sure what the graph is saying but I'm sure it means something to the astronomers!

Editor's Note: this is one of two composites for the 2009 Orionids. They look similar, but they show different meteor "streaks."

This composite, false-color image shows the Orionids meteor shower, as seen in the skies over Huntsville, Ala. in late October, 2009.

The Earth is currently passing through a stream of debris from Halley's Comet, lighting up the night sky with the "fireworks" of the annual Orionids meteor shower. Flakes of comet dust hitting the atmosphere are producing dozens of meteors per hour. Normally this shower gives a modest display of 10 to 20 meteors per hour, but the past few years have been more lively than usual.

The Orionids appear around this time each year as Eath orbits through an area of space littered with debris from the ancient comet. The Orionids occur around October 21 and are named after their radiant, which is located near the constellation Orion. Per Wikipedia, the "radiant" of a meteor shower is the point in the sky from which -- to a planetary observer -- meteors appear to originate.

We had overcast skies for the peak of the meteor shower, but the weather cleared the following night. I just set the camera on its back on the deck and started taking long exposures once I realized we could see stars. Oddly, the weather front that ruined the best viewing is what made this possible: we rarely have such a clear view of the sky from the city. Some contrast enhancement has been applied.

Perseid Meteor Shower
August 12, 2008 @ 01:25:21

I shot 256 images, using the MC-36 Remote Release Intervalometer, and I got an image of one of 27 or so Perseids we saw entering the atmosphere during a 2 hour period. The one lone Perseid I imaged is very faint, and best viewed at the "Original" size.

This just goes to show how difficult it is to image a meteor shower. Patience is a virtue!

3min. @ f4...... ISO400..... Perseid meteor shower...... 10:30pm off to the beach, 1 test shot , locked the timer down and spread out a blanket, got comfortable and watch the show......
of the 25 frames captured, the last 8 were totally fogged over with humidity, (the camera was dripping wet )..... and of course the moon was the lowest during the last frames and more meteors were visible to us, so, from 17 frames, 1 captured 3 meteors..... but it was a nice shower, no umbrella needed :-)

Apparently there was to be a wonderful display in the night sky last night between 11pm and 3am when a meteor shower was due to occur near Mars.
This is all I saw.
No natural pyrotechnics, just the usual stars...
Still, I'm glad I took the time to go out and admire them one more time. It reminded me of summer nights of my youth spent lying on warm asphalt roads and peering up at the sky.

OK - this little selection are examples of what happens when you're camping, it's getting dark and it starts to rain. You've already had a decent dinner with half a bottle of very nice cabernet to wash it down but frankly it's a LITTLE early for bed.

We were supposed to be watching the Perseid meteor shower but the rain and the clouds put the mockers on that! So I made my own.

The best meteor shower of the year, the Geminid meteor shower, will peak tonight and be visible all night where there is a clear view of the sky.
In rural areas, the meteors will be visible by 9 p.m (EDT). The main attraction begins around midnight .Before dawn, dozens of meteors are expected to be streaming across the sky continuously. According to NASA, this is the peak meteor shower of the year.

The Geminids are considered rare because they are not remnants of comets. Unlike most meteor showers, the Geminids stem originally from a near-Earth-object named 3200 Phaethon.

Happy viewing.

I'll keep silent, thinking about
the pearl dust of Cygnus,
the arrow of Hercules,
the hands of Cassiopeia never caressed by the Dolphin,
and leaving the unknown after me
ground be the fireballs.

Well, it looks like the film I shot of the meteor shower panned out. You can see about 4 of them (the light streaks that are not part of the circular star trails) in this 30 minute exposure. Taken on the morning of April 21, 2007.
