I submit this as a Memorial Day salute to all who have served in our armed forces on this Memorial Day.

Way back in my 35 mm film and darkroom days I put togeather this compiled image. The F-16 were from an AF Thunderbirds demo at the Latrobe Pa, Air show in the early 80's and the ghost image of the eagle is from a sculpture that sits in front of the Hanger 9 museum on Brooks AFB now Brooks City Base in San Antonio Texas, were I was stationed for the last 7 years of my AF career.

Happy Memorial Day! My thoughts go out today to the brave men and women who serve the United States and defend the freedoms that we enjoy. Thanks to each and every one of our military for serving our country at great risk to themselves so that we may continue to live free. There are no words great enough to express gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and gave their lives in service to our country. Thank you. You are not forgotten.

My image today was taken last Saturday at the Close Assault WWII re-enactment at Campy Mabry in Austin, TX. A reenactment is not a glorification of war, but rather a living history lesson. The reenactors do a great service to the community by sharing military history. These individuals make great personal and financial sacrifices to present an accurate visual representation of war with Nazi Germany in 1944. This reenactor was waiting for the performance and I snapped this shot when I noticed Old Glory in the background.

More information on the reenactment group from the Texas Military Forces Museum web site:
"Officially organized in January 2007 the Texas Military Forces Living History Detachment, known as G Company, is a group of dedicated and talented professional living historians. Numbering more than 60 members from every walk of life, these men and women bring unique talents and capabilities to the task of commemorating the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans, teaching the history or our armed forces and realities of warfare to the American people, and supporting those in uniform today. G Company works to link past to present in order to help our citizens understand what our nation's soldiers have done for the cause of freedom, liberty and democracy throughout history and still do today. G Company's efforts also assist the Texas National Guard in building esprit d' corps within current units as well as aiding recruiters in attracting talented, motivated and patriotic individuals to the high calling of military service."

This shot incorporates a Lightroom preset that emulates Kodachrome 10 film. I did a bit of research and found that color photos in the period of WWII would have likely been taken using Kodachrome ASA 8 or 10 film sheets. I am not a film expert but I did look at some samples from the period and I believe this is a reasonably close representation. I used a Lightroom preset provided by X-Equals.

A few thoughts on Memorial Day... Bertrand Russell was not a Christian. He stated so in a lecture he entitled Why I Am Not A Christian. He was, however, considered one of the greatest logicians (one who views that mathematics is in some sense reducible to logic) of the 20th century, one of the founders of analytical philosophy, an essayist, a social critic, and a committed atheist and pacifist. To Bertrand Russell this life was all there was and all there ever would be, and anyone who thought otherwise was a fool in his estimation. His understanding was that humankind just crawled out from some mindless process, and that our lives had no ultimate purpose other than to be lived out in some noble way that would eventually present humanity a future of total enlightenment, whatever that means in a God-less society... such an eventuality seems pointless to me.

The eventuality of humanity’s future from Russell’s perspective seems more likely to lead us into despair rather than enlightenment. If you believe that this life is all there is to live for, I suppose despair can look like enlightenment. Russell seemed to have had this in mind when he expressed that war was such an evil, that we should do anything rather than have it, including surrender, which gave rise to the phrase, “Better Red (Communist) than dead.” Had he not been born a citizen of a free society, I wonder if he would have been as flippant with his observations.

For Russell, the loss of this life meant the loss of all things, something to be avoided at all cost… “Peace at any cost.” How contrasting an attitude compared to that of Patrick Henry. Patrick Henry was a Christian, who, unlike Bertrand Russell, believed that the end of this life was but the initiation of another everlasting and undying life with Christ. Faced with the decision of giving in to the torment of British tyranny, or to fight for the freedom that would ultimately set our country apart from all others, Patrick called on the same strength, courage, and conviction that Abraham had demonstrated four-millennium prior in the first recorded war in history (Genesis 14). With these powerful words spoken March 23, 1775 at St. John's Henrico Parish Church in Richmond, Virginia, Patrick Henry became a symbol of the American struggle for liberty and self-government: “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? (“Yes”, said Bertrand Russell, and “No”, said Patrick Henry!) Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!” The thread of liberty weaves throughout the Bible, and peace will not be found without it.

The common sense of G. K. Chesterton comes to mind: “Unless a man become the enemy of evil, he will not even become its slave but rather its champion. God Himself will not help us to ignore it, but only to defy and defeat it.” God gives us the faith that steels the nerves of men to stand up to the tyrants of this world. There would be no liberty anywhere on Earth today without the sacrifice of those men and women whose strength of conviction would not allow them to cringe and hide when the critical moment came. Rather, they stood even as Abraham stood in faith to the One who is the Resurrection and the Life, and who has promised those who trust in Him that they will never truly die. May God restore to us all the faith to do all in our power to maintain peace throughout the world, and the assurance in Him to fight the well fought fight when peace can be found no other way.

Though unproven in actual combat, this U. S. Air Force F-22 Raptor, built with fifth-generation stealth technology, is the most advanced air superiority fighter in the skies today... no enemy pilot would welcome a confrontation of it. Yet, even for so formidable a deterrent as it is, the pilot understands that it is merely a tool of last resort to defend the free world against real and prevalent adversaries. War is a fearsome reality, even for these highly trained pilots... yet, they will put their lives on the line when the time comes. I fear that it may not be long before the Raptor becomes proven beyond performances such as this at an air show.

Remember a vet this Memorial Day... thanks to all the men and women who have served and still serve to preserve freedom the world over.

It's Memorial Day here in the United States, a time when we pause to remember the men and women of the military who gave their health and lives for our country. My hope for this Memorial Day is that as we look back to appreciate the sacrifices of the past, we will learn from our mistakes, and will commit ourselves to working to ensure that no such sacrifices are necessary in the future.

To make this shot I drew a a flag on a sheet of paper and positioned it below a glass tabletop (actually an overturned fish tank). I used a toothpick to place dots of water on the tabletop. I focused on the drops using a Tamron 90/2.8 macro lens and lit the paper with an SB-600 flash triggered by CLS.

Today is Memorial Day here in America. First celebrated to honor the Union dead of our civil war, it now honors all those who have died in serving our country and all who have passed away.

Our ancestors still live within all of us of course. We are the result of their struggles, dreams and hopes.

In a larger sense, we share our humanity with all those who came before. As John Donne wrote centuries before - Do not ask for whom the funeral bell tolls, know that it always tolls for all.

Each person lives a life which betters or diminishes the world. It's our responsibility to make decisions which are right for our fellow people, but for the future which follows...

I do apologize for the little rant on yesterday's post. When I see the legacy of a teacher and writer whose life was spent educating others or the past photographer on this site who worked to capture her world for the future treated without a trace of respect, it saddens me.....

Memorial Day serves as the federal holiday in which the United States remembers and honors the service members who have passed away during military service. Memorial Day first started as a remembrance by freed African Americans to honor the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. It has now grown to incorporate reverence for all Americans who have died in war and is now always observed on the final Monday of every May. This is a picture of the Sultana schooner during the Chestertown Festival (Memorial Weekend 2008). A reproduction sailboat docked in Chestertown, Maryland.

A little background from the festival website:
In response to British Parliament's closing of the port of Boston, the citizens of Chestertown, Maryland met in May of 1774 and set forth "Resolves" forbidding importing, selling, or consuming tea in Chestertown. According to local legend, residents then gathered at the town center, marched down High Street to the brigantine Geddes, which was anchored in the Chester River, and tossed her cargo of tea overboard. The annual reenactment of that event is the centerpiece of the Chestertown Tea Party Festival.

About the process:
B&W created using the Channel Mixer. Then I returned the color selectively using the "color" blending mode & a gradient mask.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. PS CS3 was used to generate the HDR composite from three exposures 2 f-stops apart. The HDR file was then tone-mapped using qtpfsgui.
