A BK6182 semi-low-floor rear-engine non-air-conditioning articulated city bus made by the already shut down Jinghua, Beijing

One of the prior mass-produced 18m rear-engine articulated buses in China, BK6182 and its sibling BK6182B (that carries a different engine) have a significant influence on China's articulated bus's design and manufacture. After their release, a surging number of domestic bus makers shifted their focus from costly, complicated low-floor articulated buses to more affordable semi-low-floor ones. Meanwhile, Beijing also led the trend of using rear-engine articulated buses on lines other than BRT.

Propulsion of BK6182 comes from a 250hp Cummins ISBe250 30 Euro III diesel engine, and is transferred by an Allison T310R 6AT gearbox with integrated retarder. Linking the two sections is a Chinese-made Ikarus hydraulic, electrically-controlled articulation bogie. At all three entrances, the floor is two steps above the ground.

Face design of BK6182(B) is generally a simple copy from MAN Lion's City, but the tail is in an original, quite sleek pattern. All three doors are 1280mm width, allowing rapid passenger flow boarding and alighting. Interior arrangement is a little better than that of the DD6181s, although considerable room is wasted. The biggest problem of BK6182(B) is the very disconcerting quality---undefined assembly, and a high malfunction rate.

Unlike BK6182 powered by a Cummins, BK6182B is equipped with a Chinese-made 240hp Yulin Diesel YC6G240-30 Euro III diesel engine. An Allison T310R 6AT gearbox with integrated retarder cooperates with the engine. Linking the two sections is a Chinese-made Ikarus hydraulic, electrically-controlled articulation bogie. In the picture, Fleet No. 74651 (BPT Division 7, former Zhuanxian Division, diesel articulated bus, code 718) is passing the Agricultural Exhibition Center crossing on the East 3rd Ring Road. In November 2010 when the former Division 3 and 7 merged in to the other nine division, Line 402 was taken over by the new Division 7 from the old Division 7. Line 402 is a busy urban artery via Beijing CBD, Beijing Landmark commercial area, Jiuxianqiao commercial and residential area, Dashanzi modern art area (Factory 798), etc. The line starts at Nangao near China National Railway's Ring Railroad Test Facilities, China Railway Museum and China Movie Museum; it ends at Sihui Station, a giant public transport hub station, terminal of tens of urban, suburban bus lines, long-distance coach lines, Subway Line 1 and Line Batong.

A BK6150K 15.4m semi-low-floor, rear-engine, non-air-conditioning articulated bus built by Jinghua, Beijing, followed by a BK6160K2 15.6m

BK6150K, BK6150K1, BK6160K and BK6160K2 form the big family of Jinghua’s 16m rear-engine articulated buses. They are generally called “Xiaojinghou” which is “Little (Xiao) Jinghua (Jing) Rear (Hou)”, in comparison with their big brothers BK6182 series, “Dajinghou”.

In 2007 when hundreds of 18m rear-engine, non-air-conditioning articulated buses hit the road, BPT saw the potential of these buses with advantages in both capacity and comfort. However, not all routes in Beijing permit the application of 18m behemoths. The demand for nimbler rear-engine articulated buses called Xiaojinghou series into existence, together with its Huanghai brand sibling, DD6160S03.

Among the Xiaojinghou family, BK6150K, abbreviated to “50K”, is the shorter version reaching 15.4m length overall. The difference between 50K and its closest brother 5K1 is that 50K is built on a FAW (First Automobile Works of China) chassis while 5K1 on a Shaanqi (Shaanxi Heavy Vehicles). BK6150K has a two-step main floor and one more stair over the driving axle. A Cummins ISBe4 205B 205hp diesel engine and an Allison T310R 6AT gearbox are located at the very end in a T-drive configuration. All the three axles are air-sprung conventional axles, and a ramp is present over the second axle. A Chinese-made Ikarus hydraulic articulation bogie connects the two chassis frames, on which the non-supporting body is built.

BPT ordered a very large number of Xiaojinghou buses. A few months after than the first batch of BK6150K debuted, Xiaojinghou quickly spread all over Beijing. However, both BPT employees and passengers quickly discovered Xiaojinghou’s vital drawbacks. First, Xiaojinghou features neither air-conditioner nor heater, making staying inside a suffering during most of the year. Second, the not so roomy passenger compartment space cannot be utilized to the fullest. Two backward-facing seats are fit behind the front wheel covers, two over the middle wheel covers, and three rightward-facing seats over the fuel tank located on the left side in front of the rear axle. Third and the worst, Xiaojinghou are extremely poor in quality. In the first months of 2008 when hundreds of rigid buses were drawn out of service in preparation for Olympic Shuttles, BPT urgently needed Xiaojinghou to fill the vacancy. Jinghua built these units day and night so certainly quality could hardly be guaranteed. Parts soon began to fall apart and doors, windows started creaking. Inside, noise drowns and vibration shakes the rear part. Mechanically, Xiaojinghou are very frequently broken down.

The most tragic fact is that Xiaojinghou replaced a lot of air-conditioning buses on artery cross-urban routes. Line 718, previously served by air-conditioning Huanghai DD6118S11, is one of the first lines whose fleet is replaced by the earliest 16m articulated buses.

Line 718 is a very long local line over 38km with more than 40 stops. It starts from Yihe Mountain Resorts in northern Haidian district behind the mountains, goes through the prosperous Zhongguancun, travels along a large part of the North 3rd Ring Road and quite a distance of the East, proceeds to the crowded Tuanjiehu (Unity Lake) area, turns onto the busy Chaoyang Road and ends at Kangjiagou, a large bus station in middle eastern urban. Fleet No. 54667 (BPT Division 5, diesel articulated bus, code 667) is travelling along the side road of the East 3rd Ring Road at Agricultural Exhibition Center crossing.

A King Long XMQ6118G 11m semi-low-floor air-conditioning city bus with Allison automatic transmission, surpassing a BK6150K

XMQ6118G series are among the most simple, robust yet comfortable buses in Beijing. In 2005, BPT introduced its first batch of 11m modern rigid buses in “Jujube Paste” red-and-grey livery. The first comers included XMQ6118G series from King Long, ZK6118HGE series from Yutong and DD6118S11 series from Huanghai. These 11m buses generally share two engines options, three for gearboxes and the same axles.

The XMQ6118G in the picture is powered by a Cummins ISBe220 31 220hp Euro III diesel engine. Joint to the engine is an Allison T270R 6AT gearbox with integrated retarder. Both axles are few-leaf-sprung conventional axles from Dongfeng (Second Automobile Works of China). The body follows a body-on-frame style, and the frame contributes to a semi low floor, two steps from ground until the end of the middle door. The engine and gearbox are in a T-drive configuration which raises the rear part of the bus an extra stair above.

Conventional design and leaf spring contribute to two rows of longitudinal seats above the front axle. In this version of XMQ6118G, behind the front right wheel cover, two lower, longitudinal seats are fitted. This version also features a conductor position with seat and desk in front of the middle door. The air-conditioner is from BPT’s favored brand, Songz; however, all frameless side windows are left with one piece sliding glass for better ventilation.

Automatic transmission provides easy operation and smooth gear shift while air-conditioning offers fairly comfortable climate. Yet leaf-spring, semi-low-floor and the 11m length fail to add points to absorbing ride, accessibility or impressive capacity. Overall, XMQ6118G AT+A/C versions achieve a satisfactory evaluation: good durability and average passenger-friendliness. King Long’s rigorous workmanship guarantees remarkable reliability for XMQ6118G, its most common model in Beijing.

The XMQ6118G shown in the picture, Fleet No. 73108 (BPT Division 7, former Zhuanxian Division, diesel rigid bus, code 108) is surpassing a BK6150K on Line 635 to the south of Agricultural Exhibition Center crossing on the East 3rd Ring Road. This XMQ6118G serves Line 731 Short/Express. The short line serves between the northwestern terminal Zhongguancun South, on the main route, and the southeastern terminal Huangqu Village, off the main line. The route is about 15km shorter than the main line and is also the express, making fewer stops along the 3rd Ring Road. The Short/Express is an important supplement for Line 731, providing faster commuter service for employees working in Zhongguancun area or along the 3rd Ring Road while residing in the east.

Please see other photos for more information regarding BK6150K and Line 731 main line.

A BK6160K2 15.6m semi-low-floor, rear-engine, non-air-conditioning articulated bus built by Jinghua, Beijing

The demand for nimbler rear-engine articulated buses called Xiaojinghou series into existence, together with its Huanghai brand sibling, DD6160S03.

Among the Xiaojinghou family, BK6160K2, abbreviated to “6K2”, is the longer version reaching 15.6m length overall. The difference between 6K2 and its closest brother 6K is that 6K2 is powered by a less powerful Cummins ISBe4 205B 205hp diesel engine, instead of 6K’s IVECO F4AE3682F*P 251hp. Built on a FAW (First Automobile Works of China) chassis, 6K2 has a two-step main floor, and one more stair over the driving axle. The engine and an Allison T310R 6AT gearbox are located at the very end in a T-drive configuration. All the three axles are air-sprung conventional axles, and a ramp is present over the second axle. The most tragic fact is that Xiaojinghou replaced a lot of air-conditioning buses on artery cross-urban routes. Line 683, formerly Line 801 Express, is previously served by air-conditioning Yutong ZK6118HGA, but is now dominated by BK6160K2s. Although air-conditioner is gone, 683 is still the top choice for people to commute between Zhongguancun, a dense commercial district in northwestern urban, and middle-eastern urban. Fleet No. 74421 (Division 7, former Zhuanxian Division, diesel articulated bus, code 421) is seen travelling along East 3rd Ring Road Side Road at Agricultural Exhibition Center crossing, on its way to its east destination, Sifang Bridge West on the East 4th Ring Road.

A BK6141D2 14m front-engine non-air-conditioning articulated bus built by Jinghua, Beijing

Look at this cute articulated bus. BK6141D2 is the last mass-produced front-engine articulated bus ordered by BPT. After BK6141D2 and its sibling Huanghai DD6140S01 in 2005, BPT was no longer interested on any, however luxury, front-engine buses.

While its big brother, the 18m BK6180D2 and D3, have an official but informal name "Dacaishen" (Big Lord of Wealth) from the builder, Jinghua, 6141D2, which has very similar, iconic headlamps, was certainly named "Xiaocaishen" (Little Lord of Wealth). Xiaocaishen features a smaller grille and thicker front bumper (Dacaishen has actually no front bumper), but the same tail and the same distinct black glass under the windows. Seen far away, Xiaocaishen is entirely a shrunk version of its brother.

6141D2 shares the same chassis, actually and the entire power train, with its sibling DD6140S01. Built on a FAW (First Automobile Works of China) chassis with simple multi-leaf suspension, 6141D2 is powered by a 210hp IVECO F4AE0682D*C Euro III diesel engine that works with an Allison T270R. There are not many essential improvements between Xiaocaishen and its predecessor, Little Cruisers (BK6141D and D1), but the newer one looks modern with frameless windows and 275/70R22.5 tubeless tyres. Three doors are all with three steps; the thoroughly-flat floor with ordinary rubber surface is 850mm above ground.

With robust chassis and reliable power train, the quality of D2s is about average. 14m length makes them extremely nimble on narrow streets and at tight corners. Regretfully, front-engine buses provide unsufficient comfort due to excessive heat and noise; additionally the high floor is also annoying. Although later Jinghua built a upgraded air-sprung, semi low floor BK6141D3, BPT, the mother company of Jinghua, decided to stop ordering new front-engine articulated buses, a few years after the last front-engine rigid joined service. Xiaocaishens are originally allocated to Division 2 (150), 4 (135), 6 (30), 7 (70) and Trolley-buses (5).

In the picture, Fleet No. 54514 (BPT Division 5, diesel articulated bus, code 514) on Line 420 is travelling southbound along the side road of the East 3rd Ring Road at Agricultural Exhibition Center crossing. Line 420 is a Beijing Youth Model honor bus line connecting Beijing Railway Station with Wangjing, a large residential area in northeastern urban. The line goes through prosperous commercial areas such as Wangfujing, Chaoyangmen, Landmark (Liangmaqiao) and Jiuxianqiao. This busy bus line was operated by Division 7. In November 1, 2010 when Division 3 and 7 merged into the other nine divisions, Line 420 is taken over by Division 5.

Agricultural Exhibition Center crossing, east end of Dongzhimen Outer Street, is on the Agricultural Exhibition Center Bridge over the East 3rd Ring Road. The Agricultural Exhibition Center to the east, one of Beijing’s Ten Famous Architectures in 1970, currently functions as a multi-purpose exhibition facility. Agricultural Exhibition Center crossing is located on the east boundary of Beijing’s embassy cluster, and has the prosperous Sanlitun area, Landmark (Liangman River) area as its southeastern and northern neighborhood.

Although served by Subway Line 10, the north part of the East 3rd Ring Road is still one of Beijing’s busiest roads. Even on the side road of this portion of the 3rd Ring Road, more than 20 bus lines have designated stops. AEC crossing is also among the crossings where 16m articulated buses most frequently present: Line 302, 601, 635, 683, 701, 707, 718 and 731 all have 16m buses in service.

In the picture, the rightmost bus is on Line 731. Line 731 is a 44km extra-long urban local route that travels from Haidian District in the north urban all the way to Tongzhou District, a suburban district in the east. Its northern terminal Xiangbaiqi Bridge is on the North 5th Ring Road, while the eastern terminal Kangcheng South Station is far outside the East 5th Ring Road. Although stopping at most of the stops on its journey along a quarter of the 3rd Ring Road, Line 731 buses maintain a very high speed compared to the others, which contributes to its “honor” given by passengers and bus fans: King of the North 3rd Ring Road. In January 2008, Line 731 was among the very first lines whose fleets were replaced by 16m. Although BK6150Ks took the place of the comfortable XMQ6118Gs, the average speed of Line 731 was not lowered at all. When you see this photo, Line 671 and Line 731 have exchanged their fleets: now Line 731 main line is primarily served by 18m DD6181S05s.

The second bus is on Line 601. While the former, very famous Line 601 was renamed 87 in July 2010, the current Line 601 is the former Line 801, the first “8-air-conditioning” bus line in Beijing. In early 2000s, 8xx is the synonym for air-conditioning bus lines, but few years later, 8xx lines are no longer fully air-conditioned yet air-conditioning buses began serving other lines as well. From east to north, Line 601 starts at Qijiafen near Beijing Industrial University and Yansha Outlet Stores, proceeds to Beijing CBD area and then up along the East 3rd Ring Road, passes the prosperous Zhongguancun commercial area after going off the busy North 3rd Ring Road, and finally ends at the Summer Palace North Palace Gate. Along the route, buses make very frequent stops; on most parts of their journey along the 3rd Ring Road, buses use the side road, thus the average speed is always constrained. In spring 2008, Line 801, the earliest air-conditioning bus line, did not escape from the pervasion of the 16m: the line gave up its ZF-transmission ZK6118HGEs and turned to BK6160K2s. In the picture, the banner “Former Line 801” beneath the front windscreen is still clearly seen. Until November 26, 2010 when Line 801 was renumbered as 601, the last 8xx bus lines bid farewell to the former icon of air-conditioning. In the future, 8xx will be branches or expresses for Bafangda suburban lines.

The buses make very frequent stops and use a lot of narrow, busy streets. In January 2008, Line 718 was among the very first lines whose fleets were replaced by 16m, when its ZF-transmission DD6118S11s were taken over by BK6150Ks. Line 718 is honored a National Workers’ Pioneer Bus Line, the highest pride available to bus lines around the country. The National Model Worker, Ms. Junhua Liu, a conductor on Line 718, represents the best image for Beijing public transport services and acts as the new idol of its staff.

A BK6120N1 12m low floor CNG bus built by the already diminished Jinghua Buses in Beijing

BK6120N1 is the predecessor of the prevailing BK6120N2 and BK6120N3, successor of the rarely-seen three-door novelty BK6120N. BK6120N is the first low floor CNG bus built by Jinghua, but the three-door configuration is not practical at that time. So the successor BK6120N1 retain only two doors, front and middle. Also, the exterior is no longer the outdated pattern; instead, "MAN replica" design, same with its diesel counterpart BK6129K and 11m mid floor BK6111CNGZ3, is applied.

BK6120N1 is of the same age with JNP6120GC (1st version), DD6129S05, XMQ6125G-1, and share the entire power train with them: Iveco F4BE0641A*G 200hp Euro V CNG engine, Allison T270R 6AT gearbox with integrated retarder, and ZF center-lowered axles. While Youngman Neoplan, Huanghai and King Long use their own chassis, Jinghua, unqualified to be a chassis maker, use a Dongfeng (Second Automobiles of China) 11m-based chassis. Similar to its siblings, although 12m-class, BK6120N1 is only 11620mm long.

Although the face is a copy from MAN Lion's City, the body has original side boards, although very plain with a narrow front door, and tail, which is quite stylish, if the "crevice-like" rear windscreen is ignored. The biggest problem of BK6120N1 is its annoying unreliability. The bus seldom stands upright---it either leans to its side or squats. When it brakes, both axles lose suspension air pressure. These problems are due to the chassis maker, but the body builder is not satisfactory either---the exterior paint peels off while the interior falls apart. During summers when the air-conditioning is on, the radiator temperature goes up high until the driver turns off the blessing cool wind and the bus becomes a hot dog. BK6120N1's Break down rate is high among all low floor buses.

In the picture, Fleet No. 57721 (Division 5 CNG bus, code 721) on Line 9 is turning left from west to north at Xiaozhuang Crossing. Although only 19.5km long from Jinjiacun Bridge in the west and Jintai Road in the east, Line 9, most legendary line of Division 5, connects two railway stations and the CBD by only 12m rigid buses. But the fleet size is overwhelming---more than 80 units.

BK6120N1 has only 49 units which are all operated by Division 5 on Line 9. Perhaps taking the unreliability of Dongfeng chassis into account, Jinghua abandoned N1 before shifted to Shanqi chassis N2 and FAW chassis N3, although these two models are not successful either.

A BK6120N3 12m low floor CNG bus built by the already diminished Jinghua Buses in Beijing

BK6120N3 and its sister BK6120N2 are the latest, and also last products of Jinghua, the plant that has been withdrawn by its parent company, BPT. BK6120N2/3 have a close relationship with the 3-door BK6120N (the relationship can be discovered from their names), the predecessor of BK6120N1. BK6120N2/3 are the update versions of BK6120N1, with different chassis, slightly changed exterior and interior. While N1 and JNP6120GC (1st version), DD6129S05, XMQ6125G-1 are of the same age, N2/3 joined BPT with the new JNP6120GCs (2nd version) and are ready for the Olympics shortly after their debut.

10cm longer and 6.5cm wider (11720mm long and 2545mm wide overall) than N1, N3 and N2 share the same "MAN face" body, but that of N3 is built on a FAW (First Automobile Works of China) chassis while that of N2 on a Shanqi (Shaanxi Automobiles, an important domestic heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer) chassis. The twins are both driven by a Cummins BGE230 30 Euro III CNG engine except for a prototype N2 which features an IVECO F4BE0641A*G. Transmission is provided by an Allison T270R 6AT with integrated retarder, the absolute main force in BPT. The body has original side boards, although very plain with a narrow front door, and tail, which is quite stylish, if the "crevice-like" rear windscreen is ignored. However, the face is a ugly copy from MAN Lion's City, but an insignificant modification makes the first-class face a ruined one---"lower jaw" missing.

During summers when the air-conditioning is on, the radiator temperature goes up high until the driver turns off the blessing cool wind and the bus becomes a hot dog. BK6120N2/3's Break down rate is high among all low floor buses.

In the picture, Fleet No. 57759 (Division 5, CNG bus, code 759) on Line 9 is proceeding along Chaoyang Road heading east. The bus is possibly kneeling as it heavily leans to the right. But the chassis is not reliable itself; often the pressures in different air bags cannot reach a balance.

If we select one most legendary line for each division, Line 9 must receive most votes for Division 5's. Although only 19.5km long from Jinjiacun Bridge in the west and Jintai Road in the east, Line 9 connects two railway stations and the CBD by only 12m rigid buses. But the fleet size is overwhelming---more than 80 units. It is a frequent scene that three Line 9 buses pull into crowded stations like Hujialou East from which Fleet No. 57759 in the picture just pulled out. Line 9 is run by three kinds of buses at the same time---DD6129S05, BK6120N1 and BK6120N3, all 12m CNG low floor buses.

A BK6160K 15.6m mid-floor, rear-engine, non-air-conditioning articulated bus built by Jinghua, Beijing

Among the Xiaojinghou family, BK6160K, abbreviated to “6K”, is the longer version reaching 15.6m length overall. The difference between 6K and its closest brother 6K2 is that 6K is powered by a more powerful IVECO F4AE3682F*P 251hp diesel engine, instead of 6K’s Cummins ISBe4 205B 205hp. Built on a FAW (First Automobile Works of China) chassis, 6K has a two-step main floor, and one more stair over the driving axle. The engine and an Allison T310R 6AT gearbox are located at the very end in a T-drive configuration. All the three axles are air-sprung conventional axles, and a ramp is present over the second axle.

Line 729 is a 40km cross-urban local line: south to Chengheyuan Residential Area outside the South 4th Ring Road, east to Dongba Construction Materials Town outside the northeastern part of the 5th Ring Road. This artery used to be served by air-conditioning Golden Dragon XML6112UE13 and King Long 6118G 11m rigid buses, but had the fleet mostly replaced by 6Ks in 2008.

Fleet No. Z40172 (BPT Zhuanxian Division, diesel articulated bus, code 0172) on Line 729 is proceeding east on Chaoyang Road. Line 729 uses the South Central Road along with BRT 1 till the city center, goes onto Qiansanmen Street and then Chang’an Avenue, passes Beijing CBD, Hujialou and Shuiduizi, and goes onto Yaojiayuan Road until exiting the 5th Ring Road boundary. Currently in February 2011, Line 729 has a fleet of more than 70 articulated buses.

Fleet No. 57749 is the prototype of BK6120N1. This unit is a direct face-lift upgrade of BK6120N. While exterior design shifts to "MAN replica", the Cummins Euro III engine on 6120N is replaced by the IVECO Euro V. On prototype N1, face, front-windscreen, side panel, tail and many other features were modified when N1 came into mass production. The most interesting is when Fleet No. 57749 is built it was a three-door version. What it is testing is how to change the three-door N to the two door N1. Now its rear door is blocked and seen from a distance it is no different with other N1s. One code after it, Fleet No. 57750, is the prototype of BK6120N2, the only N2 of Division 5, also on Line 9.

A BK6141D2 14m front-engine non-air-conditioning articulated bus built by Jinghua, Beijing

Look at this cute articulated bus. BK6141D2 is the last mass-produced front-engine articulated bus ordered by BPT. After BK6141D2 and its sibling Huanghai DD6140S01 in 2005, BPT was no longer interested in any, however luxury, front-engine buses.

44213 (BPT Division 4, diesel articulated bus, code 213) on Line 15 is turning right to north onto South Lishi Road at Lishi Road South Crossing on Chang'an Avenue, near Fuxingmen Bridge on West 2nd Ring Road. At this crossing, unlike Baiyun Road Crossing, even buses are not allowed to turn left from South Lishi Road to Chang'an Avenue. Southbound Line 15 buses proceed straight south, make a circle at Zhenwumiao area, and turn right onto Chang'an Avenue at the crossing west from Lishi Road South.

Line 15 is an important line of Division 4 and it reaches the southern city, far away from the division's main service region. North end of Line 15 is Beijing Zoo where Division 4 is dominant, while the south end is Tianqiao Department Store, surrounded by lines of Divsion 2. Line 7, 15 and 19 all start at Beijing Zoo, go to southern Beijing and use the same BK6141D2 while Line 7 and 19 are under Division 2. Fleet No. 44213 is a Beijing Youth Model honor bus unit.

This is undoubtedly a super star bus, BK6122EV2 12m low floor battery-electric city bus built by the already vanished Jinghua buses. Very few buses are fortunate enough to transport that many important passengers like BK6122EV2 did---BK6122EV2 is designed for the Olympics.

BK6122EV2 is the successor of BK6120EV, a not so successful low floor battery-electric bus that was drawn out of service (actually BK6120EVs rest for a much longer time than they run). As the respond to the promise of Green Olympics, BK6122EV2 was the solution to the eco-friendly transportation inside the Olympic Village and among the key centers and venues.

Electricity is stored in the Li-Mn battery packs, products of Citic Guoan MGL Battery Application Technologies, beneath the two longitudinal rows of passenger seats. Propulsion comes from a rated 100kW (134hp) AC traction motor made by CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. The speed is controlled not only by the motor rotation; collaborating with the motor is a 3-speed automated mechanical transmission (AMT) gearbox, which is rarely seen on other electric buses (including trolley-buses). Recharged for 4 hours to the fullest capacity, the bus is able to cruise 190km (118miles) at 40km/h with pure zero emission. At the recharge station, the removable battery packs can be easily replaced by fully recharged ones within 20 minutes, so none of these units needs to stay in the recharge station during their batteries are being recharged.

The body exterior applies Jinghua’s newest, and also last, design, nicknamed “King Kong” from the “bellicose” headlights (and the rear lights, not shown in this picture). The face is deemed ugliest ever in Beijing public transportation history, for the reason that the headlight and the plate hollow vividly resemble a pair of glaring eyes and pouting mouse of a furious man, where the designer probably got inspired. Since designed for the Olympics, an important event requiring “luxury”, most of the windows remain tight, unlike other air conditioning buses these years. Very different from the majority of city buses in Beijing, BK6122EV2 has outward-sliding doors (not slide-plug doors), single-leaf front and double-leaf rear. Center-lowered axles (50 pairs for all the Olympic electric buses) are presented to BPT by German ZF as an act of promotion and support to eco-friendly vehicles and the Olympics. Alloy wheels are from ALCOA which also equipped a few JNP6120GC units and DD6129S31 (Bafangda).

A prototype BK6122EV3 (Fleet No. 8050) and its sibling BK6122EV (Fleet No. 8049), with different face and inward-swinging doors, debuted a few years before the Olympics. After some modifications had been placed, the mass-produced BK6122EV2 came out and were designated to Olympics lines after a short run-in period. During the Olympics, the electric buses offered services on Olympic Village Loop Line (inside the village), Media Shuttle Line (between the Media Village and the Main Press Center) and Center Olympic Area Loop Line. A recharge and maintenance center, which is now Beitucheng Bus Yard, was established in Olympic Sports Center. During the Olympics and Paralympics, these star buses received honorable praise from all their passengers for the very quiet operation, notably absorbing ride, efficient dual-mode air-conditioning and extraordinarily handsome livery “Auspicious Clouds” (Please search the internet for pictures) which has been removed from all units at the end of last year.

After the Games, although before it was said that some of the BK6122EV2s were to be transformed into trackless trolley buses (add “braids”), they stayed battery electric. In October 2008, some were assigned to Olympic Special Line 1, some were on Sightseeing Line 5 (now abolished), and Olympic Special Line 6, which was taken over by Trolleybus Division from Division 2. Now, some units are still serving on 81, the former Olympic Special Line 1, with Foton electric-hybrid buses, and 84, the former Olympic Special Line 6, while others are also prepared for dispatches.

In the picture, Fleet No. 8013 is found at Trolley-bus Maintenance Depot, in front of a workshop gate. It might be subject to a major malfunction and seems to be laid up for quite many days, since the right-side airbags are almost gone out of pressure completely and bricks are placed to support the leaning body. This is not the only BEVs in Beijing that drop out of service. Perhaps the appealing BEVs still need time to prove to be reliable, at least more reliable than the trolley-buses which they are replacing.

Trolley-bus Maintenance Depot is presided by BPT Maintenance Division. It is located at Fuchengmen Outer West Crossing, in the same yard with BPT Trolley-bus Division office buildings and employee residence area. The yard is generally called "Trolley-bus Maintenance Center". At present, TMD only offer repair and maintenance to trolley-buses, electric buses and hybrid buses.

In the picture, Fleet No. 64503 (BPT Division 6, diesel articulated bus, code 503) on Line 37 is waiting for the left-turn signal at Baiyun Road Crossing on Chang'an Avenue. Vehicles on streets perpendicular to Chang'an Avenue are not allowed to turn left onto Chang'an Avenue at most crossings, but at least at Baiyun Road Crossing, buses have privilege.

Line 37 is a busy line connecting West 3rd Ring Road center section and southeast corner of 2nd Ring Road. Most of its route is along Chang'an Avenue and it passes Tian'anmen as well. The main force of Line 37 is CNG Neoplan and D2 in 2007, and 16m rear-engine artic DD6160S03 and D2 at present.

A BK6182 semi-low-floor rear-engine non-air-conditioning articulated city bus made by Jinghua, Beijing

One of the prior mass-produced 18m rear-engine articulated buses in China, BK6182 and its sibling BK6182B (that carries a different engine) have a significant influence on China's articulated buses' design and manufacture.

In the picture, Fleet No. 64060 (BPT Division 6, diesel articulated bus, code 060) on Line 52 is waiting for green signal at Baiyun Road Crossing on Chang'an Avenue, more accurately, Fuxingmen Outer Street, west stretch of West Chang'an Avenue. The bus has just pulled out of Gonghui Dalou (Union Building) stop, opposite to the bulk building behind the bus, All China Federation of Trade Unions. Line 52 is one of the busiest bus lines in the city, running along almost the full length of 6.7-kilometer Chang'an Avenue, while having stops at the two major railway stations of Beijing.

A BK6126S1 (Note1) 12m mid floor double-decker bus built by the already diminished Jinghua in Beijing

Among the three double-decker models introduced in Beijing before the 2008 Olympic Games and BK6126S1, both the mid floor and low floor, is the most common. Also, BK6126S1 is the earliest new air-conditioned double-decker into service (Note2)---the mid floor version debut on March 8 2008 on Line Special 8 Inner Ring (on the 3rd Ring Road). Applying Jinghua’s latest, and also the last, exterior design with a face that vividly resembles a pair of glaring eyes and pouting mouse of a furious man, BK6126S1 gets its name “Double-decker King Kong” from bus fans.

The chassis is a product of Shanqi (Shaanxi Heavy-duty Vehicles), an expert in double-decker bus chassis. BK6126S1 is propelled by a national-made Yulin Diesel YC6L260-40 260hp Euro IV diesel engine. The gearbox is an Allison T325R, uncommon in Beijing. The power train is shared by the three new double-decker models, but the axles are different. BK6126S1 mid floor version’s axles are still unidentified, but the combination is believed to be a ZF steerable tag axle and Dongfeng-Dana conventional axles.

The bus applies a mid floor design with the engine longitudinally settled in the rear. Floor between the two doors is 500mm above ground, and the second step is much lower than that on other mid floor buses. Behind the rear door, the floor is raised another step and two rows of seats are placed longitudinally, facing each other; however the seats are inadequately raised above floor, and passengers have very limited space for legs and heads. The straight staircase faces backward, and the engineers in BPT believe that the design is able to lessen the possibility of passengers’ falling down when the bus makes sudden stops. The air conditioner is located above the engine, taking the position of rear windshields on both floors.

In the picture, Fleet No. S60453 (Double-deckers Division, Double-decker, code 0453) has just pulled out of Baiyun Road (White Cloud Road) stop to the south of Baiyun Road crossing on the West Chang'an Avenue. Baiyun Road crossing separates Sanlihe East Road to the north and Baiyun Road to the south. Line 26, 45, 80 (former 650), and 319 cross the West Chang'an Avenue at Baiyun Road crossing.

Note1:
All units of BK6126S1 have plates writing BK6126S on their rear end.
Note2:
The earliest air conditioning double-decker bus in Beijing is Changjiang-Flxible; however, the model of few units was not put forward.

Fleet No. S60495 is assignated to Line Special 8 Express Inner Ring while 36004 is assignated to Line 72. The two double-deckers have just unloaded its passengers on the north side of Beijing South Railway Station South Square street and is turning onto the south side to have a break. After the break, they will load the passengers and S60495 will make a loop on 3rd Ring Road while 36004 will head for Beijing West Railway Station South Square. They will pass this Y-crossing again upon departure but go ahead instead of making a U-turn.

Newly built upon the Olympics and lavishly equipped, Beijing South is the terminal of a number of expensive high-speed trains including 300km Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Trains (CRH2 and CRH3, Chinese-version of Kawasaki Shinkansen E2-1000 and Siemens ICE3). Completely reborn from the demolished shabby old Beijing South, the new station aims for the high-class transportation of entering and exiting Beijing.

Public transport near Beijing South is convenient. Both the north and the south square have access to Subway Line 4. The north square is the terminal of some artery innerc-city lines and rural area lines. The south square has the "3rd Ring Roader" Line Special 8 Express, railway shuttle line 72, inner-city line 529 and Special 5, and suburban line 652 (point-to-point highway express) and 665 (through-community local). Night Line 208 also starts here.

A BK6120N2 12m low floor CNG bus built by the already diminished Jinghua Buses in Beijing

BK6120N2 and its sister BK6120N3 are the latest, and also last products of Jinghua, the plant that has been withdrawn by its parent company, BPT.

N2 and N3 share the same "MAN face" body, but that of N2 is built on a Shanqi (Shaanxi Automobiles, an important domestic heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer) chassis while that of N3 on a FAW (First Automobile Works of China) chassis.

In the picture, Fleet No. 17743 (Division 1, CNG bus, code 743) is proceeding to Lincui Road - Datun Road Crossing. Behind No. 17743 is a BK6126S1 low floor double-decker on Line 83. This is the west-end of Datun Road semi-underground tunnel which passes underneath the Olympic Green. Line 510 and Line 83 use west half section of the ground-level side road while Lines such as 425 use the tunnel without stops. The east-end of the tunnel is at Datun Crossing.

Among the three double-decker models introduced in Beijing before the 2008 Olympic Games and BK6126S1, both the mid floor and low floor, is the most common. Also, BK6126S1 is the earliest new air-conditioned double-decker into service (Note2). BK6126S1 low floor version’s axles are still unidentified, but the steerable tag axle is believed to be a ZF product.

The bus applies a low floor design with the engine offset at the left-end corner; however, due to the absence of wheelchair ramp and fastening space, the bus cannot be categorized into the accessible bus fleet. The straight staircase faces backward, and the engineers in BPT believe that the design is able to lessen the possibility of passengers’ falling down when the bus makes sudden stops. The air conditioner is located above the engine, taking the position of rear windshields on both floors.

The low floor BK6126S1 also has two versions, transit and sightseeing. The sightseeing version is in Division 5, now on transit Line 23. Transit version disperses among Division 1, 4, 7 and Xin’ao.

In the picture, Fleet No. 46020 (Division 4, Double-decker, code 020) is proceeding to Lincui Road - Datun Road Crossing. This is the west-end of Datun Road semi-underground tunnel which passes underneath the Olympic Green. A couple of BK6120N2 12m low floor CNG buses built by the already diminished Jinghua Buses in Beijing

BK6120N2 and its sister BK6120N3 are the latest, and also last products of Jinghua, the plant that has been withdrawn by its parent company, BPT.

N2 and N3 share the same "MAN face" body, but that of N2 is built on a Shanqi (Shaanxi Automobiles, an important domestic heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer) chassis while that of N3 on a FAW (First Automobile Works of China) chassis.

In the picture, several BK6120N2s are parking inside Shuangquanpu East Bus yard. The middle three units from left to right are Fleet No. 17748, 17746, 17750 (Division 1, CNG bus, code 748, 746, 750). The rusty bus on the left is a BK6111LNG, Fleet No. 17205, one of the ten Liquified Natural Gas demo buses, only for back-up service now. Shuangquanpu East Bus Yard is also a LNG refueling demonstration station introducing Chart Fueling equipments also in present days BPT only operates less than 50 LNG buses.

From this picture we may find a interesting difference between the BK6120N2s: some of them have round-cornered vessel caps while some have cornered ones.

8047 (Trolley-buses Division, electric bus, code 047) on Line 81 is proceeding along Lincui Road heading south for Lincui Bridge on North 5th Ring Road. Line 81 is derived from Olympic Special Bus Line 1, but goes more northward reaching the residential communities around Baoshengli area. Less than five BEVs appear on Line 81. They dedicate themselves to Line 84 where no conventional fuel vehicles lend force to the electric super stars.

At this crossing, Line 510 buses turning right are bound for the last stop; the ones going straight have just left Shuangquanpu East, made a circle around the block and are bound for the other terminal, Mudanyuan West.

S60446 (Double-deckers Division, Double-decker, code 0446) is pulling into National Library stop. The building in the background is the old building of the National Library of China; right (North) to the old building locates the very modern new building, National Digital Library, which is not shown in this picture. The advertisement-wrapped double-decker on the right is a CNG-powered Jinling JLY6101SACNG Fleet No. S60028, one of the oldest model still in service in Beijing.

Note1:
All units of BK6126S1 have plates writing BK6126S on their rear end.
Note2:
The earliest air conditioning double-decker bus in Beijing is Changjiang-Flxible; however, the model of few units was not put forward.

Although featuring red quartz floor and cushion seats, BK6126S1 has small but non-intact windows upstairs which are insufficiently luxury for sightseeing. Transit version disperses among Division 1, 4, 7 and Xin’ao.

In the picture, Fleet No. 46020 (Division 4, Double-decker, code 020) is waiting for the East to West green signal on Baofusi Bridge, an intersection of Zhongguancun East Road over the sunk North 4th Ring Road main road. The bus is at the side road's plain intersection with Zhongguancun East Road. The picture is shot on Chinese Lunar Calender January 15th Lantern Festival when the third snow visits Beijing and people all over the city play Chinese firecrackers. Note the triangle LED dim lights integrated in the headlights.

JLY6120SCK is among the three double-decker models introduced in Beijing before the 2008 Olympic Games. The chassis is a product of Jinling’s traditional partner, Anhui Kässbohrer, an expert in double-decker bus chassis. JLY6120SCK is propelled by a national-made Yulin Diesel YC6L260-40 260hp Euro IV diesel engine. The gearbox is an Allison T325R, uncommon in Beijing. The power train is shared by the three new double-decker models, but the axles are different. JLY6120SCK’s steering and the steerable tag axle are national-made Dongfeng-Dana products, while the driving axle is a ZF.

Beneath the staircase there is only a handbag place; some bus fans states that it is wiser to utilize the room as a wheelchair space. The air conditioner is located above the engine, taking the position of rear windshields on both floors.

In the picture, Fleet No. X60039 (Xin’ao Division, Double-decker, code 0039) is turning onto Meishi (Coal Market) Street from East to South at Qianmen area in the heart of Beijing. Following X60039 is X60001, a BK6126S1, sibling 12m low floor double-decker of JLY6120SCK. JLY6120SCK has two versions, sightseeing and transit. Operated by Division 6 previously on the abandoned Sightseeing Line 3 and now on Line 50, sightseeing version has red quartz floor and cushion seats. Transit version spreads over Division 3, 7, Xin’ao and Zhuanxian.

>>>Updates: In late June 2010, Line 803 is renumbered as Special 11 (T11), becoming the first "Special" numbered line outside Doubledeckers Division.

A BK6182B semi-low-floor rear-engine non-air-conditioning articulated city bus built by Jinghua, Beijing

One of the prior mass-produced 18m rear-engine articulated buses in China, BK6182B and its sibling BK6182 (that carries a different engine) have a significant influence on China's articulated buses' design and manufacture. After their release, a surging number of domestic bus makers shifted their focus from costly, complicated low-floor articulated buses to more affordable semi-low-floor ones. Meanwhile, Beijing also led the trend of using rear-engine articulated buses on lines other than BRT.

At all three entrances, the floor is two steps above the ground.

Face design of BK6182(B) is generally a simple copy from MAN Lion's City, but the tail is in an original, quite sleek pattern. All three doors are 1280mm width, allowing rapid passenger flow boarding and alighting. The biggest problem of BK6182(B) is the very disconcerting quality---undefined assembly, and a high malfunction rate.

In the picture, Fleet No. 74718 (BPT Division 7, diesel articulated bus, code 718) is captured right after its right turn from West to South at Changhong Bridge Crossing. It is heading for Dabeiyao, the center of Beijing International Trade Area.

In the picture, Fleet No. Z70178 (Zhuanxian Division, CNG bus, code 0178) has just turned left (from East to South) beneath Changhong Bridge, onto the side road of East 3rd Ring Road. Line 750 is the longest line in Zhuanxian Division, connecting two suburban areas while going through traffic jam in the center city. The conductor in front of the rear door is making a right turn sign---the bus is immediately pulling into Changhong Bridge South stop right after the left turn beneath the bridge.

A BK6182 semi-low-floor rear-engine non-air-conditioning articulated city bus built by Jinghua, Beijing

One of the prior mass-produced 18m rear-engine articulated buses in China, BK6182 and its sibling BK6182B (that carries a different engine) have a significant influence on China's articulated buses' design and manufacture. After their release, a surging number of domestic bus makers shifted their focus from costly, complicated low-floor articulated buses to more affordable semi-low-floor ones. Meanwhile, Beijing also led the trend of using rear-engine articulated buses on lines other than BRT.

Propulsion of BK6182 comes from a 250hp Cummins ISBe250 30 diesel engine, and an Allison T310R 6AT gearbox with integrated retarder cooperates with the engine.

The biggest problem of BK6182(B) is the very disconcerting quality---undefined assembly, and a high malfunction rate.

In the picture, Fleet No. 74616 (BPT Division 7, diesel articulated bus, code 616) is captured right after its right turn from North to East at Yong'anli Crossing. It is heading for Temple of Heaven Park South Gate. Yong’anli is a critical area along Chang’an Avenue with a number of embassies and foreign agencies. Jianguomen to the West and Guomao in the East are both prosperous commercial areas.

A BK6126S1 (Note1) 12m low floor double-decker bus built by the already diminished Jinghua in Beijing

Among the three double-decker models introduced in Beijing before the 2008 Olympic Games and BK6126S1, both the mid floor and low floor, is the most common. Also, BK6126S1 is the earliest new air-conditioned double-decker into service (Note2).

JLY6120SCK is propelled by a national-made Yulin Diesel YC6L260-40 260hp Euro IV diesel engine. The gearbox is an Allison T325R, uncommon in Beijing. The power train is shared by the three new double-decker models, but the axles are different.

Although featuring red quartz floor and cushion seats, BK6126S1 has small but non-intact windows upstairs which are insufficiently luxury for sightseeing. Transit version disperses among Division 1, 4, 7 and Xin’ao.

In the picture, Fleet No. 46003 (Division 4, Double-decker, code 003) is resting in National Gymnasium Station. Line 83 and 85, both ending at this station, are assigned by low floor BK6126S1. Line 83 and 85 are two of the six Olympic Special Bus Lines preserved after the Games---Line 83 is the former Line 3 and Line 85 is Line 7.

Note1:
All units of BK6126S1 have plates writing BK6126S on their rear end.
Note2:
The earliest air conditioning double-decker bus in Beijing is Changjiang-Flxible; however, the model of few units was not put forward.

8012 on Line 84 is pulling in to Jimen Bridge South bus stop. These electric buses are the only operating buses in BPT that are bearing 4-digit fleet numbers, where digit 8 still stands for Trolleybus division. The bus type digit, the second digit, is absent owing to the lack of a number that stands for electric buses. The second snow this year, which had been much earlier than most years’ first snow, had fallen from the sky all over the night, blanketing everything with at least 20cm thick snow. Meanwhile, the leaves of most trees have not withered yet.

BK6120N2 and its sister BK6120N3 are the latest, and also last products of Jinghua, the plant that has been withdrawn by its parent company, BPT.

N2 and N3 share the same "MAN face" body, but that of N2 is built on a Shanqi (Shaanxi Automobiles, an important domestic heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer) chassis while that of N3 on a FAW (First Automobile Works of China) chassis. The twins are both driven by a Cummins BGE230 30 Euro III CNG engine except for a prototype N2 which features an IVECO F4BE0641A*G.

In the picture, Fleet No. 27602 (Division 2, CNG bus, code 602) has just pulled out from Lishilu Nankou ( Lishi Road South Crossing) stop and is at the moment facing Chang'an Avenue, the most important and best known street in Beijing and even China. This picture is quite unique because you can discover the two generations of Jinghua's "MAN face". The older face on the further BK6111CNGZ3 is quite "original", and by comparing, you can easily discover why N2's "lower jaw" is missing. The 11m, mid floor, leaf sprung BK6111CNGZ3 is the lower-class version of BK6120N1/2/3.

Line 387 is a "National Youth Model Bus Line"; however, the line bears terrible criticism of its extremely low speed---on the 3rd Ring Road of Beijing where the speed limit is mainly 50-80km/h, buses on Line 387 "stroll" at the speed of 20-30km/h. Additionally, the drivers remove their foot from the pedal 50m behind the bus stops and let the buses taxi into the stops depending on inertia.

A BK6129K low floor city bus made by Jinghua, Beijing. BK6129K is the first model of low floor diesel rigid bus of Jinghua, a few years after the release of its first low floor CNG rigid bus, whichi is around 30cm (12 inches) shorter than the diesel version.

Since it is a full-length 12m bus, the interior is a little more spacious than the CNG version (BK6120N(1/2/3)). Sharing the same wheelbase and rear overhang, BK6129K stretches 26cm on its front-overhang than the CNG versions, contributing to its back-to-back seat arrangement above the front-wheel-hump.

Although in design BK6129K is quite similar with JNP6120G-1, the best rated low floor diesel rigid bus in Beijing, BK6129K has a number of drawbacks. Its chassis made by Dongfeng Autos is awkward, and the rear of the bus often squats (as you may find in this picture). The interior is undefined, for every part makes intolerable noise when the bus bumps. The engine compartment is harsh, and when its Cummins ISBe4 225B engine idles, the bus turns a tractor---it trembles severely and produces a weird sound.

In the picture, Fleet No. 83336 (BPT Trolleybuses Division, diesel rigid bus, code 336) is shot near Huizhongli Bus Station. A few BK6129Ks are dispatched onto Line 653, an artery of Northern Beijing, as vehicles in off-peak time and additional vehicles in rush-hour. BK6129Ks are originally assigned mainly on Line 61, Line 414, Line 609 and Line 653 of Trolleybuses Division, but when Line 61 and Line 414 took over BJ6123C7C4D low floor hybrid-electric buses, a number of BK6129Ks were transferred to Xin'ao Division and dispatched onto Line 850.

Note: Till January 2010, all BK6129Ks are given out by Trolley-buses Division: 40 units to Xin'ao Division; 10 units to Division 6. In late January 2010, Line 653 is taken over by Division 1. Rigid diesel supplemental buses are XMQ6122G.

Additionally, the drivers remove their foot from the pedal 50m behind the bus stops and let the buses taxi into the stops depending on inertia.

A BK6182 semi-low-floor rear-engine non-air-conditioning articulated city bus made by Jinghua, Beijing.

In the picture, Fleet No. 64027 (BPT Division 6, diesel articulated bus, code 027) is captured at Dongdan, a prosperous business neighborhood to the east of Tian'anmen. Line 52 is one of the busiest bus lines in the city, running along almost the full length of 6.7-kilometer Chang'an Avenue, while having stops at the two major railway stations of Beijing.
