So here's a height comparison with the OG Bratz Movie Body, Bratz Catz Body, The 2013 Bratz Body, Bratzillaz Body and the Moxie Teenz Body. The new Bratz now measure at 10 1/2 inches tall without shoes. The neck/neck peg are still the same thing. The biggest let down for me is the clothing fitting the new and old Bratz. Hopefully we will be seeing tons and tons of Bratz fashion packs this Spring. Either way, Bratz are Bratz.

Hopefully diz helped u felow brats fanz. :)

Casey, 25, walks the streets of Jackson heights late at night to support her three small children on her own, and has been doing so for the past eight years. She doesn't have a high-school diploma or a GED and so goes for the quick way to make enough money for her family. "This is one of my top options seeing how society is. People have so many suggestions or stereotypes. 'Maybe she's selling herself to have drugs or maybe she has no life,' but little do they know this is my way of surviving, unfortunately. Maybe it's not the best job to have, but it's getting me through."

Most of the other women working Jackson Heights are transsexuals. “The Johns are looking for whatever, men, women, transsexual. Its anything goes.”

She was once stabbed by a client who tried to hold her captive, and she's been locked up between 10 and 20 times. "I understand that this is what comes with the nature of the job." Throughout it all, she's never done drugs aside from marijuana. "My mom was a full-fledged crack addict who gave away her five kids. She's the reason I would never do drugs. I'm not out here looking like a fiend, looking to rob people. I would never ever do drugs because of her. I saw what it does."

Alport Heights near Ambergate just outside of the Peak District and only a 20 minute drive from me. Makes a change to go somewhere and not have to endure a huge drive back. The area is quite popular with boy racers and to go on an evening with none present is a rarity. The rain kept coming down splashing water onto the filters but patience pays off as a burst of light breaks through the thick blanket of cloud to create some gorgeous side lighting.

Hamilton Heights is an interesting neighborhood located in the hills to the north of Manhattanville and West Harlem. The eastern slope of the neighborhood is a National Register and city historic district and includes an amazing collection of rowhouses. Many are in styles similar to these, and they make for a fun photographic destination when the light is right (lots of trees up there). Unfortunately, I was harassed and threatened with arrest after taking this and, for some reason, most of my experiences with people trying to interfere with my rights have occurred in New York City and north of Central Park.

The Corona Heights neighborhood stretches between Buena Vista Park and Eureka Valley. The streets within Corona Heights were literally cut out of the large hill that once encompassed all of Buena Vista Park and extended all the way down to Market Street.

In 1899, excavation began on the hill to make way for the Gray Brothers Quarry and brick factory. The quarry had removed tons of rock and produced tens of thousands of bricks, creating a blasted landscape (seen in the photo).

George and Harry Gray (the Gray brothers) owned a total of three quarries in San Francisco. Besides The Corona Heights Quarry, One was located on Telegraph Hill,[2] and the third at Thirtieth and Castro (now called Billy Goat Hill) located above Noe Valley.[3]

They had a bad reputation that was well deserved. Of the bricks that were produced at the factory, many of them were used in the Cable Car beds. Subsequently it was determined that these bricks were substandard and had to be replaced. The community became enraged with the Gray brothers when adults and children were injured by falling rocks and homes were damaged by flying debris. Although the Gray brothers faced lawsuit after lawsuit, they kept quarrying.

In 1909, Carolyn Bush, their cashier and George Gray's secretary, was shot and killed by an unpaid worker who lost his temper. A few years later in 1915 George, by then a millionaire, was at the Thirtieth and Castro quarry. He was confronted by Joseph Lococo, a 26-year-old former worker whom Gray refused to pay back wages (of only $17.50). George was murdered by Lococo at the quarry. The Quarrying and the company ended at that time.[4][5][6][7] - Wikipedia

Beacon Heights was named by A.M. Huger in the 1890s. Beacon Heights features a viewing area of bare quartzite, with excellent views Grandmother and Grandfather Mountain, Pisgah National Forest and in the distance, roughly, 13.5 miles south, southwest, are the peaks of Table Rock, Hawksbill Mountains. On very clear days, the Charlotte skyline approximately 80 miles away can be seen from this vantage point. 6/25/2011

Pulkovo Heights (Russian: Пу́лковские высо́ты) is a chain of hills located to the south of Saint Petersburg. They run to the south-west in the direction of the Izhora Plateau and have an altitude of up to 73 meters. They were used as a natural defense line during the Russian Civil War and the Battle of Leningrad. It is the location of the Pulkovo Observatory and the industrial suburb of Shushary.

A nifty Houston Heights mansion with a witches hat roof. This home is just north of 11th street and Heights, on the West side of Heights. The head-on photo doesn't do the size of this place justice - it's pretty huge. It must be one of the larger homes on Heights. Absolutely beautiful in person.

HOUSTON — Houston firefighters have found the body of one person killed in a house fire and are searching for a possible second victim.

The Houston Fire Department says the fire in Houston's historic Heights neighborhood erupted early Monday. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with moderate burns.

The Victorian-style home has been featured in an annual Christmas light tour in the neighborhood.

The department has not identified the victim. They say there is a second "unaccounted for" person they are looking for in the rubble.

Arson investigators are probing the cause of the blaze.

This is an album cover I shot for the band Heights.

Their album 'Dead Ends' is out now on Mediaskare Records.

Lighting: Bowens 500w Head through a medium sized Softbox. The Softbox was positioned above the subject and angled down to create a slight inconsistancy of light on the logo. I wanted to make it clear it was an actual three-dimensional object and not a simple white shape added later in post.

Fastest photoshoot I've had so far, from first image to last: 3 minutes total. Got about 8 solid shots out of 22.

Portraits: Heights

The band are Heights from jolly old England. They have recently been signed to a label so new press photos were needed. I also did an interview with the frontman as a favor for my mates new website.

Only problem I have having a very small window is there'll always be something I've done wrong due to the rush and no assistant - I missed off the feet as I was holding on to my light stand (a 60 inch umbrella turns you into Mary Poppins in even the slightest wind).

University Heights Bridge

The University Heights Bridge, a steel truss bridge consisting of a central swing (double) span and three deck truss approach spans, is, in large part, one of the oldest major bridges in New York City, and one of the city's oldest swing-type bridges, a bridge type that was employed in New York City primarily along the Harlem River between the 1870s and 1910.

The swing span and two flanking spans were originally constructed in 1893-95, under the direction of consulting engineer William H. Burr, as the Harlem Ship Canal Bridge. In 1905-08, in an unusual and complex bridge flotation operation, these spans were moved to 207th Street to form the University Heights Bridge over the Harlem River. The design, construction, move, and reconstruction represent the collaboration of a highly distinguished group of American engineers.

The distinctiveness of the bridge and especially its ornamental ironwork, makes the University Heights Bridge one of New York City's most aesthetically designed bridges. . Harlem Ship Canal Bridge

At the northern end of Manhattan island, Broadway was originally known as the old Kingsbridge Road and functioned as the main route from New York City to Albany and Boston. The first bridge here to cross Spuyten Duyvil Creek to the Bronx was King's Bridge (1693); later, to the east, Farmer's Bridge (1759) was built. As early as 1826 a proposal was made to dredge a navigable channel, incorporating part of Spuyten Duyvil Creek, to connect the Harlem and Hudson Rivers.

This project did not come to fruition until the late nineteenth century; work was begun on the Harlem Ship Canal in 1888, and the canal was open to traffic in Hay 1895. In 1892 the Department of Public Works had been authorized to construct a The bridge was one in a series of similar steel truss swing-type bridges built a long the Harlem River at the turn of the century to serve the rapidly expanding population of northern Manhattan and the Bronx. It was completed just prior to the Central (Macombs Dam) Bridge at 155th Street, which was finished in May 1895. These bridges are the oldest extant major bridges in New York City after the Brooklyn Bridge (1867-83, John and Washington Roebling) and Washington Bridge (1886-89, William R. Hutton, chief engineer), both of which are designated New York City Landmarks.

The Harlem Ship Canal Bridge was "designed and built under [the] supervision and direction" of William H. Burr, consulting engineer to the Department of Public Works. Contractor for the bridge was A. McMullen & Co. Burr gave credit (during his absence from New York City) for "some of the main features of the foundation plans" to Alfred P. Boiler, then in association with Burr, and to George W. Birdsall, chief engineer of the Department of Public Works. The bridge design was of special interest, as stated by Burr, because "the trusses of the swing-span possess a somewhat different outline than hitherto adopted in American practice, in that the center lines of the top chords exhibit reversed curves. This outline was adopted to obtain a more pleasing appearance than that usually em ployed." Boiler, known for his concern for aesthetics in bridge design, undoubtedly also had a hand in the design of the decorative features of the bridge, such as the ironwork of the railings. Boiler had designed the superstructure of the Madison Avenue Bridge (1882-84, replaced in 1907-10) which had identical iron railings.

The Harlem Chip Canal Bridge was considered to be particularly attractive.. Noted architectural critic Montgomery Schuyler in 1905 thought "the Central [Macombs Dam]} and the bridge over the ship canal are highly creditable works, in an artistic as well as in a scientific sense," and Engineering Magazine in 1909 called it "probably the prettiest of the swing bridges" along the Harlem River.

The Engineers

Three distinguished engineers were responsible for the initial design and construction of the bridge. William Hubert Burr (1851-1934) was one of the most distinguished American engineers of his day, involved in many major public works projects in New York City. American engineering historian Carl Condit credits Burr as being "one of the engineers who helped to raise the level of American building technology to the status of exact science...he played a valuable role in propagating European theory in the United States.

Born in Watertown, Connecticut, he received a degree in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1872. His career began in the construction of wrought-iron bridges for the Phillipsburg Manufacturing Company (1872-74) and in the municipal waterworks of Newark, New Jersey (1871-75) .

He became a professor at Rensselaer (1875-84), and left to act as assistant to the chief engineer (and was later made general manager) in superintending the design and construction of several major iron and steel bridges for the Phoenix Bridge Company (1884-91), including the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad Bridge, Cincinnati, Ohio (1886-88), then the world's heaviest truss bridge.

Burr spent a year as a professor at Harvard and then moved to New York City in 1893. He became involved in bridge and foundation construction as both consulting engineer and contractor, and at the same time started a long tenure as a professor of civil engineering at Columbia University (1893-1916).

Montgomery Schuyler thought

Boller's bridges "honorably distinguished, among those of his profess i on, by the evident and generally successful pains taken with respect to their appearance." His views were set forth in his Practical Treatise of the Construction of Iron Highway Bridges for the Use of Town Committees (1876).

Metal Truss Swing Bridges

The Harlem Ship Canal (University Heights) Bridge is a metal truss bridge, the most common type of bridge employed in the United States during the years between 1850 and 1925. This type of bridge is composed of a combination of metal trusses, each truss made up of pieces of iron or steel connected to form triangles which are joined together.

The arrangement of the members determines the specific truss type; three truss forms were particularly popular for American bridges in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Howe truss, named after Massachusetts millwright William Howe and patented in 1840, became the predominate nineteenth-century truss form for railroad bridges, first in wood and later in iron.

The Pratt truss, patented in 1844 by Boston bridge designer Thomas Pratt, later became the standard type at the end of the era of major railroad bridge construction. The Warren truss, patented in 1848 by English engineers James Warren and Theobald W. Monsani , rose in popularity In the late nineteenth century; the steel version appeared increasingly after the 1890s, and by the 1920s the Warren truss became a dominant bridge form for two decades. The Harlem Ship Canal (University Heights) Bridge employs both Howe and Warren trusses.

The bridge is, as well, a swing-type bridge. A swing span bridge is one of the three types of moveable bridges (the others being vertical lift and bascule or drawbridge), the main span pivoting on a large central pier. Swing spans came into popularity in the United States in the mid-nineteenth century after the construction of such bridges along the Mississippi River.

In New York City, this bridge type was built primarily along the Harlem River; the first swing bridges were for the railroads and included one at Second Avenue for the Suburban Rapid Transit Company (1878, demolished) and Boiler's New York £ Northern Railroad Bridge (1880-81).

The first "high-level" iron swing bridge on the Harlem was Boiler's Madison Avenue Bridge (1882-84; replaced In 1907-10). The Harlem Ship Canal „ Bridge spans (incorporated In the University Heights Bridge) and the Central (Macombs Dam) Bridge are the oldest extant swing-type bridges in New York City. After 1910, vertical lift bridges were employed along the Harlem River.

The University Heights Bridge

At the time of the construction of the Harlem Ship Canal Bridge, the Rapid Transit Commission was planning an IRT subway line along Broadway which would eventually require a bridge to carry the trains across the canal.

However, the Harlem Ship Canal Bridge had not been designed to accommodate this additional function.

This idea was adopted by the city as an opportunity to both construct a new bridge at Broadway and re-use the Harlem Ship Canal Bridge by moving it to 207th Street- Official authorization was provided by Chapter 423 of the laws of 1903.

In one of the more intricate bridge flotation operations of its type in the United States, the four spans of the Harlem Ship Canal Bridge were lifted from their piers, floated by pontoon scow, and lowered onto a new receiving central pivot pier, rest piers, and abutments in the new location at 207th Street.

This operation lasted from October 1905, to November 1907. Meanwhile, a newly constructed bridge was floated into place at Broadway. The moving of the bridge was accomplished by John B. McDonald, under the direction of the Board of Rapid Transit Commissioners, with George Staples Rice as chief engineer.

Rice (1849-1920) had become chief engineer of the New York Rapid Transit Commission in 1904. He had previously been chief engineer of the Boston Rapid Transit Company (1887 on), was deputy chief engineer of the New Croton Aqueduct, and after 1892 was associated with the construction of the New York City subway system.

The central pivot pier on a pneumatic foundation and two rest piers had been constructed between November 1903 and September 1904, by the Foundation & Contracting Company. An additional westernmost approach span was built and general approach work performed by the Snare & Triest Company in 1905. Othniel Foster Nichols, chief engineer for the Department of Bridges, was responsible for the new University Heights Bridge. Nichols (1845-1908) was born in Newport, Long Island, and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechic Institute in 1868.

He became assistant engineer with Cooper & Hewitt in 1870, and in 1888 entered a period of public service to New York City as chief engineer of the Brooklyn Elevated Railroad Company (1888-95), assistant engineer in charge of the Williamsburg Bridge (1895-1902), and principal assistant engineer, Department of Bridges (1902-03)♦ Nichols was appointed chief engineer in January 1904.

The bridge in its new location (originally known as the "Fordham Heights Bridge") was officially named the University Heights Bridge In May 1904, and was opened to traffic on January 8, 1908 (work was not actually completed until November 1908) . It was noted in 1919 that "the old spans, which have become a part of the University Heights Bridge, had to have considerable changes In order to : bring them up to modern requirements, and they have done duty continuously since the formal opening of the bridge."

Description

The University Heights Bridge is a five-span steel structure consisting of a 270-foot "through truss" (the traffic load is carried on the bottom chords) central swing (double) span and two western and one eastern "fixed-deck truss" (the load is carried on the top chords) approach spans. The central span(s) and two flanking spans were originally the Harlem Chip Canal Bridge, while the westernmost approach span was constructed for the new location.

At the northeast and southwest corners of the swing span, rising from the rest piers, are two stone shelter houses (built to house electric transformers) which originally had red tile roofs with copper finials but are now covered with asphalt shingles and metal caps. Four sidewalk shelters, flanking the outsides of the rest piers, are each constructed of six cast-iron columns supporting a hipped copper-shingled roof with modillioned copper cornice and copper ridge, finials, and hip rolls.

Elliptical wrought-iron arches spring from the columns to the cornices, and the spandrels are ornamented by curvilinear wrought-ironwork. The river sides of the shelters originally contained wood sash windows. Attached to the corner columns nearest the swing span and roadway of each shelter are four security gates (the bottom panels of which were original to the Harlem Ship Canal Bridge) that consist of riveted latticework circles and bars.

Both sides of the bridge have ornamental iron railings which, according to the original University Heights Bridge specifications consist of "cast-iron posts, bronze hand rail and wrought-iron panels of the same design as the railing on the three spans from the Ship Canal Bridge, which are to be erected on this site, and of which the new railing will be a continuation."

The posts are decorated by inset corner rope motifs and bosses. The bottom half of the wrought-iron panels have a design consisting of squares with circle cut-outs in which are placed pinwheels, while the upper portion of the panels have flowers with stylized spiral foliation.

The bridge is currently painted brown; the original paint colors were black and white, according to the specifications for the University Heights Bridge: an undercoat of red lead and two coats of white lead "tinted to the standard color of the Department of Bridges" were used for all surfaces "except to railings, fascia, lampposts, gates and other ornamental parts of structure, which shall be painted two coats of drop black and boiled linseed oil with sufficient japan to. give a permanent and lustrous finish."

The University Heights Bridge, which remains in use over the Harlem River , is an interesting and significant piece of engineering. One of New York City's oldest major bridges and oldest extant swing-type bridges, it has a dual construction history which involved a complex and unusual bridge flotation operation. It is the product of the work of a number of the most highly distinguished turn-of-the-century engineers in New York City, and has notable decorative features.

This Colonial Revival at 2570 Euclid Heights Blvd. is on the corner of Edgehill/East Overlook Road and Euclid Heights. When I was growing up, I sometimes stayed at my grandparents' house two doors west on Euclid Heights. For a long time, I used to cut through the neglected wooded rear yard of this house to get to East Overlook Road.

My uncle (the one who was forced to walk across Euclid Heights traffic to Gene's Sohio to buy cigarettes at age eight) put the fear of God in me and told me that the old lady who lived here alone would shoot me on sight. The decades-overgrown rear lot was once an elaborate garden. I didn't "believe" my uncle, but from then on, I took the sidewalk around. I never saw anyone come in or go out. And I was around here a lot. Walking up to the door and ringing the bell, or touching the outside of the house--let alone "trick or treat"--was out of the question.

I was in good company. An uncredited architecture critic with the city wrote "Almost invisible from the street because of the neglected, overgrown lawn, this was a 'haunted house on the way down,' with no operable heating system and no running water. There were huge holes in the living room and bedroom ceilings."

The obviously mentally ill old woman who owned this house--to me, an unseen Boo Radley-like figure--had had all her utilities shut off, had no family and, according to neighborhood lore, survived on cat food. Most likely, she was a frightened recluse of some means who had someone discreetly drop off her groceries and take out the trash, who lived out years of her life in one or two rooms. She moved away over 30 years ago and, with the patience of Job, new owners (at great expense) reclaimed their home from decades of neglect.

The Heights of Houston where I grew up and still claim as home....beautiful memories and lovely homes that still have lovely flower beds, front porch swings, and still fly "Old Glory"!!! In large size you can see the chains the porch swing is hanging from!!

Mr. Wolfe's "place" turned out to be on the fourth floor of a five-story brownstone house in Brooklyn Heights -- one which formerly commanded a view of the harbor, but which now has become simply dismal, what with larger apartments that have been built between it and the water. Assisi Heights Convent is a three-story Italian Romanesque style building with a unique red tile roof, beautiful slate floors, a Romanesque ceiling, and German hand-blown stained glass windows. Although Assisi Heights seems to be ageless, it is actually only about 50 years old. The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, who celebrated their 126th anniversary here this year, purchased a hilltop in northwest Rochester and ground breaking for the Mother house took place in 1952. The landmark in the city was completed in 1955.

Today, the convent serves as the home and congregational headquarters of the Rochester Franciscan community. About 125 retired Sisters of Saint Francis reside at the convent. (rochestermn.com)

*Sigh* One step closer to the season finale! I've gotta say I can't wait to start taking the pictures for this one! The next and final chapter in season 2 will consist of 2 parts. The first part will be released when finished and the second a week later. Ik its weird, but once you read the end of 2.9:1 you'll know why I wanted to end it there for 7 days.

Another thing I just checked and LIncoln Heights Season 2 is a year old! Woot! =]

The Heights Armature Works is an old abandoned factory located at 107 Yale. It appears to have been empty since 1998 (that was the calendar I found on a wall). Lots of old machines and odds and ends lying around. Looks like the business moved elsewhere and left this place behind.

The Heights of Houston, Texas where I grew up and attended school has some gorgeous
old homes on the lovely stately boulevard that used to have a trolley running down the
middle back in days gone by. This restored home on Heights Blvd. is a business on
the lower story and to add to the ambiance they have an old restored truck in front.
Heights Boulevard, a living photograph of "how it used to be" featuring distinctive
turn-of-the-century homes built in the early 1900's, privately maintained parks, several
churches, and a public library and special City of Houston designation as a "Scenic
Right-of-way" Charming tree-lined streets framed the largest concentration of historic
homes in Houston In 1983, the community was designated as a Historic Multiple
Resource Area by the National Park Service and listed in the National Register of
Historic Places. This designation recognizes the area's overall historical significance
as well as the unique value of the more than 100 individually listed private and public
buildings that give the Houston Heights its special quality and charm.
In 1991, the City designated Houston Heights to be a Historic District of the City of
Houston, and the Houston Heights received an official Texas Historical Marker
commemorating the founding of Houston Heights.

Height (noun).

1. considerable or great altitude or elevation.

2. a high place above a level; a hill or mountain.

3. the highest part; top; apex; summit.

4. the highest point; utmost degree.

I shot it three years ago in Switzerland. The giant mountain looming above Lucerne to the southwest is Mount Pilatus (2132m), an odd name supposedly deriving from the myth that the corpse of Pontius Pilate was flung into a small lake on the mountain, his spirit for ever after haunting the summit and bound to bring tempest and damnation down onto Lucerne if disturbed. More prosaically, the name is probably derived from the Latin word pileatus, meaning “capped” (ie with clouds).
There is also some legends about the Dragon of Mount Pilatus... but it’s not a right time to tell them now... This image is about HEIGHT, about its definition... but... about some people also...
For some hikers it's only one way up to the summit - walking in the sky... and all country is as a map below...

Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte. The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centres. (As an adjective, wuthering is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather.) The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys both themselves and many around them.

Now considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights' innovative structure, which has been likened to a series of Matryoshka dolls, met with mixed reviews by critics when it first appeared. Though Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was originally considered the best of the Brontë sisters' works, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its originality and achievement made it superior. Wuthering Heights has also given rise to many adaptations and inspired works, including films, radio, television dramatisations, musicals and songs (notably the hit Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush - see below), ballet and opera.

A father built this 950-seat, single-screen cinema for his son in 1929.

Bob Wygant, that son, operated this popular and independent neighborhood theater until his death in 1951.

Ticket prices were 5 cents for children and 15 cents for adults. Beset by the competitive power of the expanding theater chains, Wygant resorted to imaginative promotions to fill the seats. One memorable promotion involved a personal appearance by the awesome American Indian actor "Iron Eyes" Cody.

After Wygant's death, his son Richard operated the Heights Theater until it was sold in the late 1950's. It is now a landmark antiques shop on 19th street in the Heights.

A sad evening in Rennes — Visualization of "Wuthering Heights"

On the onset of night. It's not dusk but rather the last few minutes of dusk where the light fades exponentially to mark the death of the day. HDR from 5 intuitive exposures through a frosted window. Tone mapping in Photomatix and curves and adjustments in CS2.

The Picture Of My Mind: The picture shows my mental state on one fine evening - remorseful, melancholic and depressed. It just looked as I lost some thing that I wanted to win badly (and not just "get it"). Sometimes, it's a very subtle transition in the states of my mood. I feel disappointed for no valid reasons, and this is one of them. May be it's due to the realization of some loss which is still embedded in the sub-conscious mind.

"In sooth, I know not why I am so sad: It wearies me; you say it wearies you;
But how I caught it, found it, or came by it, What stuff 'tis made of, whereof it is born,
I am to learn; And such a want-wit sadness makes of me,
That I have much ado to know myself." - Shakespeare

The Picture In My Mind: One of the best romantic (and very complex) plots that I have ever read is Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë's only novel.

For many years, the description at the beginning of the plot continued to form an image similar to this HDR. Once convinced that it's the same scene that I had envisaged, I couldn't stop making this one! The excerpt from the novel is below:

"Wuthering Heights is the name of Mr. Heathcliff’s dwelling. ‘Wuthering’ being a significant provincial adjective, descriptive of the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather. Pure, bracing ventilation they must have up there at all times, indeed: one may guess the power of the north wind blowing over the edge, by the excessive slant of a few stunted firs at the end of the house; and by a range of gaunt thorns all stretching their limbs one way, as if craving alms of the sun. Happily, the architect had foresight to build it strong: the narrow windows are deeply set in the wall, and the corners defended with large jutting stones."- Chapter 1, Wuthering Heights.

It was not until 1850, when WUTHERING HEIGHTS received a second printing with an introduction by Emily's sister Charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership. And from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back. Today it is widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature.

Presidio Heights is an elegant neighborhood surrounded by the urban Richmond District and ritzy Pacific Heights. Most of the real estate in Presidio Heights consists of 2-level single family homes and includes the rarest of city traits: front, back and even side yards. The wide, flat streets are quiet and tree-lined, and make for an excellent environment for raising a family.

By the early 1990s, the single-deck intercity U set cars were on their way out but they could still be found on their original Western Line stamping ground, at least on morning and afternoon peak weekday services. On a winter's afternoon in mid July 1993, an eight-car set, with some cars fitted with Beclawat windows, waits at Valley Heights before resuming the Blue Mountains grades.

The Citrus Heights Fire District's 1959 or 1960 (depending on the source) Coast Fire Apparatus pumper is seen early in its career. As far as I know, every other apparatus in the history of the CHFD (with the exception of some officers' vehicles) was red; I don't know the story behind the white paint. One reference that I read stated that this was the first diesel-powered fire apparatus in the region.

Receiving various upgrades over the years, this engine lasted in front-line service into the 1980s; its last regular assignment was as Engine 29 in Orangevale. In the previous photo to this one, it can be seen in that role (and painted red).

Valley Heights (322m)
William Cox referred in 1815 to "The Valley" as a suitable site for watering and feeding stock. By 1832 it had been designated as a resting place for stock and was known as Fitzgerald’s Valley (possibly after Richard Fitzgerald whom Governor Macquarie had appointed Superintendent of the agricultural farm at Emu Plains in 1819). Above the valley on the Western Road an inn was opened in 1831 under the name The Valley Inn (later known as The Woolpack and The Welcome Inn). With the arrival of the railway in 1867, the inn closed and was sold to the Hon. Geoffrey Eagar MLA. A railway platform was opened as Eagar’s Platform in 1875. This became The Valley in 1877 and Valley Heights in 1880. A steam locomotive depot operated here from 1913 until the electrification of the railway line in 1957. The actual valley itself is now known as Sun Valley.
