Flickr The Tug Fork River - Historical River
Tags: water   river   spring   kentucky   historic   westvirginia   appalachia   pikecounty   matewan   mingocounty   2013   tugfork   hatfieldandmccoys
The Tug Fork rises in the Appalachian Mountains of extreme southwestern West Virginia, in southern McDowell County, near the Virginia state line. It flows in a meandering course through the mountains generally northwest, past Welch. Approximately 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Welch, it briefly forms approximately 4 miles (6 km) of the state line between West Virginia (northeast) and Virginia (southwest). For the remainder of its course it forms part of the boundary between West Virginia (east) and Kentucky (west), flowing northwest past Williamson, West Virginia. It joins the Levisa Fork at Louisa, Kentucky to form the Big Sandy.

The river flows through an especially remote mountainous region in its upper course. The river valley between Pike County, Kentucky and Mingo County, West Virginia was the scene of the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud in the late 19th century.

In this same area sits the town of Matewan, which was the site of the coal mine wars of the early 1920s and the subject of John Sayle's critically-acclaimed movie, Matewan.

Flickr Kentucky and West Virginia: Matewan WV: Mingo County: Tug River Valley at Matewan
Tags: mountains   kentucky   westvirginia   rivers
The Tug River is the dividing line between these two states. It becomes the "Big Sandy" west of here, and the Big Sandy flows into the Ohio at Kenova. The Hatfield McCoy Feud raged over both sides of this river. Reportedly during the height of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud, the West Virginia Governor threatened to send the State Militia across the Tug in to Kentucky to keep "those McCoys from coming over into our state and raiding it." I understand cooler heads finally prevailed or we would have had one state invading another all over again.

Flickr Wrath
Tags: wrath
Hello my friends todays painting is one of the seven deadly sins known as (Wrath) 18x24in.also known as anger or "rage", may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. Anger, in its purest form, presents with self-destructiveness, violence, and hate that may provoke feuds that can go on for centuries.or just a few years remember theThe Hatfield–McCoy feud hahaha ? Many people believe if you dont do what is right be prepare to feel Gods wrath, Wrath is the only sin not necessarily associated with selfishness or self-interest (although one can of course be wrathful for selfish reasons, such as jealousy, closely related to the sin of envy).so try and do what is right or you may feel the power of wrath knocking on your door at a unexpected hour. steve p.s. whos there?

Fiercely independent, and frequently belligerent, people characterized as rednecks perpetuated old Celtic ideas of honor and clanship. This sometimes led to blood feuds such as the Hatfield-McCoy feud in West Virginia and Kentucky.

In colonial times, they were often called rednecks and crackers by English neighbors. A letter to the Earl of Dartmouth included the following passage: "I should explain ... what is meant by Crackers; a name they have got from being great boasters; they are a lawless set of rascalls on the frontiers of Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, and Georgia, who often change their places of abode."
(I think Texas should have been included in that statement. Many Texas men can be referred to as "a lawless set of rascals", and this is one of them.)
