Flickr December 18th 2007 by Del Rey Already Dead (Joe Pitt #1) by Charlie Huston

Those stories you hear? The ones about things that only come out at night? Things that feed on blood, feed on us? Got news for you: they’re true. Only it’s not like the movies or old man Stoker’s storybook. It’s worse. Especially if you happen to be one of them. Just ask Joe Pitt.

There’s a shambler on the loose. Some fool who got himself infected with a flesh-eating bacteria is lurching around, trying to munch on folks’ brains. Joe hates shamblers, but he’s still the one who has to deal with them. That’s just the kind of life he has. Except afterlife might be better word.

From the Battery to the Bronx, and from river to river, Manhattan is crawling with Vampyres. Joe is one of them, and he’s not happy about it. Yeah, he gets to be stronger and faster than you, and he’s tough as nails and hard to kill. But spending his nights trying to score a pint of blood to feed the Vyrus that’s eating at him isn’t his idea of a good time. And Joe doesn’t make it any easier on himself. Going his own way, refusing to ally with the Clans that run the undead underside of Manhattan–it ain’t easy. It’s worse once he gets mixed up with the Coalition–the city’s most powerful Clan–and finds himself searching for a poor little rich girl who’s gone missing in Alphabet City.

Now the Coalition and the girl’s high-society parents are breathing down his neck, anarchist Vampyres are pushing him around, and a crazy Vampyre cult is stalking him. No time to complain, though. Got to find that girl and kill that shambler before the whip comes down . . . and before the sun comes up.

Sufferers must be treated immediately to prevent death, and are usually given powerful antibiotics and surgery to remove dead tissue. Amputation can become necessary if the disease spreads through an arm or leg.

Patients may undergo skin grafts after the infection has cleared up, to help the healing process or for aesthetic reasons.

A South Carolina grandmother has become the fifth victim of the flesh-eating bacteria that has sparked terror across Georgia.

Louise Thompson underwent emergency surgery to remove infected flesh from her leg and was in a coma for five days.

Until being diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis she had never even heard of the bacteria, which attacks soft tissue and muscle.

Four other victims are recovering in hospitals after picking up the rare and serious disease in Georgia after picking up the bacteria from cuts and wounds.

Doctors say the cases are unrelated and that the bacteria is not contagious.

The aggressive disease first made headlines when it struck Aimee Copeland, a 24-year-old graduate student from Little Tallapoosa River, who cut her leg when she fell from a homemade zip-wire.

Doctors were forced to amputate her leg, her foot and both her hands as the necrotizing fasciitis spread rapidly through her body.

The second victim of the flesh-eating disease, Lana Kuykendall, 36, noticed the infection on the back of her leg just hours after being released from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, where she gave birth to twins.

She has had seven surgeries to remove the infected flesh and remains in critical condition at Greenville Memorial Hospital in South Carolina, near her home.

Bobby Vaughn, 33, was the third victim. He has been upgraded to good condition after doctors removed two pounds of flesh from his groin.

He became infected after he cut his thigh while cutting weeds in Cartersville.

Paul Bales of Lake Sinclair became victim number four after he cut his leg while installing a new dock at the lake on May 1.

It was a very small cut that didn’t stop the grandfather playing golf the next day but within four days the cut had swelled and he was forced to have his leg amputated.

Despite the bizarre outbreak of the disease, Dr Mike Green, of Macon, said people shouldn't over-react and become paranoid about becoming infected.

It remains very rare, he said.

NECROTIZING FASCIITIS: WHAT CAUSES IT, AND WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

...Necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly known as 'flesh-eating disease', is a rare but extremely vicious bacterial infection. 'Necrotizing' refers to something that causes body tissue to die, and the infection can destroy skin, muscles and fat.

...The disease develops when the bacteria enters the body, often through a minor cut or scrape. As the bacteria multiply, they release toxins that kill tissue and cut off blood flow to the area.

...Because it is so virulent, the bacteria spreads rapidly throughout the body.

...Symptoms include small, red lumps or bumps on the skin, rapidly-spreading bruising, sweating, chills, fever and nausea. Organ failure and shock are also common complications.

...Sufferers must be treated immediately to prevent death, and are usually given powerful antibiotics and surgery to remove dead tissue. Amputation can become necessary if the disease spreads through an arm or leg.

...Patients may undergo skin grafts after the infection has cleared up, to help the healing process or for aesthetic reasons.

By DANIEL WAGNER | Associated Press – 5 hours ago ... Friday, May 11, 2012

finance.yahoo.com/news/calls-toughen-regulation-jpmorgan-...

WASHINGTON (AP) — JPMorgan Chase faced intense criticism Friday for claiming that a surprise $2 billion loss by one of its trading groups was the result of a sloppy but well-intentioned strategy to manage financial risk.

More than three years after the financial industry almost collapsed, the colossal misfire was cited as proof that big banks still do not understand the threats posed by their own speculation.
"It just shows they can't manage risk — and if JPMorgan can't, no one can," said Simon Johnson, the former chief economist for the International Monetary Fund.

JPMorgan is the largest bank in the United States and was the only major bank to remain profitable during the 2008 financial crisis. That lent credibility to its tough-talking CEO, Jamie Dimon, as he opposed stricter regulation in the aftermath.

But Dimon's contention that the $2 billion loss came from a hedging strategy that backfired, not an opportunistic bet with the bank's own money, faced doubt on Friday, if not outright ridicule.

"This is not a hedge," said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chair of a subcommittee that investigated the crisis.

He said the trades were instead a "major bet" on the direction of the economy, as published reports suggested.

On Friday, Dimon told NBC News, for an interview airing Sunday on "Meet the Press," that he did not know whether JPMorgan had broken any laws or regulatory rules. He said the bank was "totally open" to regulators.

The head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mary Schapiro, told reporters that the agency was focused on the JPMorgan loss but declined to comment further.

JPMorgan's disclosure Thursday recharged a debate about how to ensure that banks are strong and competitive without allowing them to become so big and complex that they threaten the financial system when they falter.

The JPMorgan loss did not cause anything close to the panic that followed the September 2008 failure of the Lehman Brothers investment bank. But it shook the confidence of the financial industry.

Within minutes after trading began on Wall Street, JPMorgan stock had lost almost 10 percent, wiping out about $15 billion in market value. It closed down 9.3 percent.

Fitch Ratings downgraded the bank's credit rating by one notch, while Standard & Poor's cut its outlook JPMorgan to "negative," indicating a credit-rating downgrade could follow.

Morgan Stanley and Citigroup closed down more than 4 percent, and Goldman Sachs closed down almost 4 percent. The broader stock market was down only slightly for the day.

Dimon gave few details about the trades Thursday beyond saying they involved "synthetic credit positions," a type of the complex financial instruments known as derivatives.

Enhanced oversight of derivatives was a pillar of the 2010 financial overhaul law, known as Dodd-Frank, but the implementation has been delayed repeatedly and will not take effect until the end of this year at the earliest.

JPMorgan's trades show that the derivatives market remains too opaque for regulators to oversee effectively, said Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., one of the law's namesakes.

"When a supposedly responsible, well-run organization could make such an enormous mistake with derivatives, that really blows up the argument, 'Oh, leave us alone, we don't need you to regulate us,'" he said.

Criticism of the bank did not stop with its traditional chorus of detractors. It also came from Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., a prominent member of the Senate Banking Committee who has received $10,000 since January 2011 from JPMorgan's political action committee, the most any candidate has received.
Corker, a leader of a failed effort last year to block a Federal Reserve rule that slashed bank profits from debit cards, called for a hearing "as expeditiously as possible" into the events surrounding JPMorgan's loss.

Tim Ryan, president of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, a trade group, said it was impossible to legislate or regulate risk out of the financial system.

"My hope is that this is viewed as bona fide hedging, but it went wrong," he said in an interview. "A mistake was made. Money is going to be lost. It's not customer money. It's not government money. It's JPMorgan's money, the shareholders of JPMorgan."

No one seemed to suggest Friday that JPMorgan had broken a law. But the mistake added a wrinkle to the still-unsettled discussion about how the financial industry should be regulated in the aftermath of 2008.

"This just tells you that we are a long, long way from getting our arms around this whole 'too big to fail' issue," said Cliff Rossi, a former top risk executive for Citigroup, Countrywide and other big financial companies.

Immediately after the crisis, a time of popular outrage over bailouts and investment losses, there was broad public support for an overhaul of bank regulations.

The changes promoted by the Obama administration were in many cases similar to what the financial industry had sought before the crisis: Consolidation of regulators and oversight of the multi-trillion-dollar marketplace for derivatives.

Regulators are still drafting hundreds of rules under the 2010 law. As Wall Street has returned to record profits, and executives to million-dollar bonuses, banks have fought to soften those rules.
In particular, the industry has fought hard against a few provisions that might have prevented the problems at JPMorgan.

One is the so-called Volcker rule, which will prohibit banks from trading for their own profit. The rule is still being written, and the Federal Reserve has said it will begin enforcement in 2014.

JPMorgan said that its bets were made only to hedge against financial risk. Dimon conceded that the strategy was "egregious" and poorly monitored. But analysts, former bank executives and many lawmakers disagreed.

"This is an exact description of proprietary trading-style activity," Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., told reporters Friday. "This really is a textbook illustration of why we need a strong Volcker rule firewall."

Nancy Bush, a longtime bank analyst at NAB Research and a contributing editor at SNL Financial, said the trades probably crossed that line because they were making money for JPMorgan.

"So they made money on hedges and then they hedged some more," she said. "At some point it goes from being a hedge to being a moneymaker."

JPMorgan was seen as a savior of weaker banks during the financial crisis and the only big bank to escape relatively unscathed. His reputation enhanced, Dimon, 56, has been emboldened to challenge efforts to toughen regulation.

In an interview with the Fox Business Network earlier this year, Dimon said that Paul Volcker, the former Federal Reserve chairman for whom the rule is named "doesn't understand capital markets."

Last year, he questioned the current Fed chair, Ben Bernanke, about the rules and said they might be delaying the recovering of the financial system and the broader economy.

"Has anyone bothered to study the cumulative effect of all these things?" he asked.

Dimon, who grew up in the Queens borough of New York and was groomed by the former Citigroup chief executive Sanford Weill, has also chafed against Occupy Wall Street protesters.

"Acting like everyone who's been successful is bad and that everyone who is rich is bad — I just don't get it," he said at a conference earlier this year.

On Thursday, at about the same time he was breaking news of the $2 billion loss to Wall Street, Dimon sent an email to JPMorgan's 270,000 worldwide employees assuring them that the company was "very strong."

Grandmother killed by horrific flesh-eating disease just five days after first complaining about an itchy leg

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

A grandmother has died of a flesh eating disease just five days after she first complained of a burning sensation in her leg.

Phyllis Mason, of North Carolina, is believed to be the sixth victim in the U.S. to be killed by the rare bacterial skin infection called necrotizing faciitis this year.

The 75-year-old was recovering from a pelvic fracture when she contracted the aggressive disease at the end of August.

Doctors believe that Mason contracted the disease from an open sore on her tailbone which she suffered after sitting down so much during her recovery from the fracture.

The disease is typically contracted by people with a weakened immune system and can spread quickly through the victim’s body.

The first warning sign of the disease came on August 31 when Mason felt a burning sensation in her right leg. Becoming worried she texted her son, reported the Fay Observer.

The following day, on September 1, Carl Mason checked on his mother and her leg looked fine.
On August 3, Carl Mason returned to check on his mother after she texted him the previous day saying that her leg was now a little swollen and painful.

When his mother didn’t answer the door, Mason broke in and discovered her lying on the floor, still breathing but with a severely bruised leg.

Doctors first suspected gangrene but then confirmed that the 75-year-old was suffering from necrotizing fasciitis.

AP
.................................
.

Mason died on September 5, five days after complaining about her leg, which by now was entirely blackened.

Because bacteria was still ravaging Mason's body after she died, medical professionals, friends and family had to take precautionary measures against contracting the disease. At her funeral, mourners were kept three foot from the open casket, the paper reported.

Carl Mason told the FayObserver that his mother loved reading to her two-year-old granddaughter and was determined to recover from her fracture.

Earlier this month, Robert Turner, a 32-year-old convicted murderer died from necrotizing fasciitis while he was still serving time in a Chicago prison.

Last month Anthony Hills, 55, from Charleston, died from the aggressive infection and in July seven-year-old Tevita Alatini from Texas was also killed from the condition.

Linda Snyder, a pastor from Sacramento, California, lost her life in June after being infected as did Michigan woman Crystal Spencer, 33.

In May, new mother, Lana Kuykendall, contracted necrotizing fasciitis in a hospital in upstate South Carolina, just after delivering her twin babies.

She underwent 20 surgical procedures to stop the aggressive bacteria spreading but managed to avoid having any limbs amputated.

Earlier in the year the same disease savagely struck Georgia student Aimee Copeland forcing surgeons to amputate all four of her limbs to save her life.

In total at least six Americans have now died from the infection and another eight victims have had limbs amputated.

----- NECROTIZING FASCIITIS: THE DEADLY FLESH-EATING BACTERIA

Necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly known as 'flesh-eating disease', is a rare but extremely vicious bacterial infection. 'Necrotizing' refers to something that causes body tissue to die, and the infection can destroy skin, muscles and fat.

The disease develops when the bacteria enters the body, often through a minor cut or scrape. As the bacteria multiply, they release toxins that kill tissue and cut off blood flow to the area.

Because it is so virulent, the bacteria spreads rapidly throughout the body.

Symptoms include small, red lumps or bumps on the skin, rapidly-spreading bruising, sweating, chills, fever and nausea. Organ failure and shock are also common complications.

We stand side by side waving our arms beating time in the wind
beautiful and senseless.

I can’t get away from the turbines. The sound is the placental rhythm,
the wind cut by the blade is the same as the heart closing around gulps of blood
is the same as my arms stroking through a pool in summer is the same as your
breath heaving while we make love.

If I could believe that after this is something so different, which I guess nothing is (really different) I would say, and I am saying, that I will miss this rhythm. I will miss the sound of the air moving in and out, the breathing, the and...

Today a family I have been working with let go of their sister/daughter/mother. She is in a cyclone of septic infection. The bacteria are eating her skin and I have taken off huge swaths of her landscape and I am losing. I can’t get ahead of it. I am constantly caught in the backwash. These are the flesh eating bacteria that incite dread when people read about it or see the pseudo-documentaries on cable tv. These are those bugs. The flesh becomes the food and the only treatment is to cut away what is dead. The problem with these infections is that the blood supply to the tissue is inadequate for the antibiotics. A knife is the only hope and it is literally barbaric. The antibiotics wash around the edges of the infection but if the dead tissue is not removed, there is no winning. I took this woman back to the OR five times in ten days. Finally the family looked up, as if seeing her in a new way--or maybe an old, love-filled way and said stop. Essentially, “let the dying finish.” The time beats out the last seconds for her soon and then the next second happens and the next and time does its thing and she will have passed through the windmill herself.

The windmills stand guard over the moments and I want to hug them when I finally hear the might of the air they move. If you pass by them, stop and listen. I am comforted by their neutrality, by the simple progression. Nothing might happen in this one stroke or I might be done in this one, or I might play a C Major 7th, full and round on my guitar, and harness joy and store it until the next moment comes.

www.messersmith.name/wordpress/2010/06/19/ants-in-the-sugar/
Though I love living in a tropical paradise I'd be less than honest to say that it's all fun and games. There are minor imperfections. Having had malaria seven times is an example. Horrible things called tropical ulcers and a flesh eating bacteria which attempted to remove my left are other trivial complaints. My recent bout with staph and bacillus bacterial gobbling up my olfactory organs, leaving me odorless (at least as far as I can tell) could have happened anywhere, but upper respiratory infections are very common here. You haven't had a cold until you've had a "tropical cold".

However, the trivial day to day irritations bug me the most. For instance, ants in the sugar: I slipped that pun in so cleverly that you may have missed it. It is also easy to miss the ants in the shot above, because they are the teensy variety. You can't miss them when you take the lid off, though. They scurry around in a panic and try to hide by burrowing into the sugar. You can see them better if you click to enlarge.

You may also note that our sugar is rather odd looking. It smells funny too - not funny ha-ha. No, it's more like funny they forgot to take some of the goop out when they were making it. Some might call it raw sugar. We call it the best we can get.

Here I have enlarged that culprits for you: I honestly don't know how they get in the sugar. We take it straight from the bag and put it into an air-tight plastic container. The lid goes "suck" when you pull it off. One must assume that there are ant eggs in the sugar. Why these are considered a suitable ingredient I don't know either.

Well, enough of that.

Here's an nice fan coral which I shot yesterday on The Henry Leith:

I managed to grab the wrong battery for my Canon G11 on Saturday morning, so I was out of juice half way through the dive.

Here's Richard Jones poking around the stern of the wreck. Rich forgot to load a battery into his camera. Therefore, Rich was the chief dunce of the day:

It's Sunday evening here. I'm pretty wasted from riding three hours on the Harley up the north coast road and back, dodging Harley-eating potholes all the way. I'll have more to say about that tomorrow.

So, I'll cut it short and get some down time. First let me show you the collapsed roof of the pilot house of The Henry Leith:

It's too bad that it finally fell down. I was cool to get into the pilot house and look out at all of the fish swimming around.

Here's one of the better shots that I've ever gotten of a Blackspotted Puffer (Arothron nigropunctatus):

They are very shy, so it's difficult to catch them out in the open.

This Divericate Tree Coral (Gendronephthya roxasia) doesn't move at all, so it's no fuss to get a nice close-up:

Nice detail in that one. It's worth a click to see the full-sized version.

I'll have a Harley story tomorrow and some shots of the Tapira Surfing Club.

Last summer I thought I had been bitten by a spider. It itched like mad. A few days later I had another bite. This went on for a week, and it was making me pretty uncomfortable.

So, I went nuts. Tore the bed apart. Had everything cleaned. Forced Yoyo to go looking for the spider. Got angry when he didn't find it. I admit it, on some level I thought he was harboring it, being an entomologist and all. And why was it only biting me and not him, too?

Then we went to NYC for his birthday. I was looking forward to the trip for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was that for a whole week, the spider wouldn't be able to devour me.

Well, I was wrong. In NYC, I got worse and worse. The itching was terrible. It was all on the left side of my face, and I thought perhaps it was shingles. I made a doctor's appointment for the day we got back to SF.

I was diagnosed with shingles and put on anti-virals. The bad news, though, is that I didn't get better. In fact, I was getting worse. My skin began to crack and bleed, huge eruptions — it felt like my face was on fire. The itching and pain were so bad I couldn't sleep. I called the doctor and told her I was getting worse. She prescribed drugs to dull the nerve pain and pills to help me sleep. But I kept getting worse.

After about 5 more days, it had completely taken over my face and spread all over my torso. I had lost 5 pounds. I went back to the doctor who said there was no way it was shingles and referred me to a dermatologist specializing in infectious diseases.

He properly diagnosed it as a bacterial infection, and once I was on the proper drugs, I felt better within 4 hours. Thank you, Dr Dans!

I didn't take any photos of it at its worst. Honestly, I was too miserable to do that. Loking back on some of my calamities — especially the clothesline and the curb (damn you, Minneapolis!) — I sort of wish I had chronicled them. No, I don't have it at its worst, but I figure it has to go in, as this was one of the bigger calamities of the last few years.

And, for the record, it SUCKED. I would take a cast over this any day.

Necrotizing fasciitis as caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (the flesh-eating bacteria) begins with a injury that leads to death of the subcutaneous tissues. Although of little consolation, “Flesh-eating bacteria” is a misnomer as the bacteria do not actually eat the tissue. They cause the destruction of skin and muscle by releasing toxins (virulence factors).

If you too want to buy an unsuitable toy for an infant:

Subject was male between 30 and 60. Recovered from marshy fen. Ninety percent of skin devoured by flesh-eating bacteria; much of muscular system also eaten away. Able to determine very little of the damage occurred post mortem. Surmise final hours somewhat unpleasant.

The Komodo dragon is the largest lizard living today. Their bite is highly poisonous containing not poison but deadly flesh-eating bacteria that quickly kills its prey. The dragons are immune to the bacteria and like other lizards swallow their food whole. Only in this case the Komodo is big enough to devour a fully grown man (which they have been known to do). Gruesome.

It's 2 am.
After a busy on-call having inserted 3 chest tubes for collapsed lungs, removed 3 appendices, part of 1 lung for cancer, drained an abscess, debrided the dreaded flesh-eating bacteria out of someone, and fashioned a colostomy for an obstructed colon cancer, I'm wrapping up the paperwork and heading to bed. I'm feeling tired, yet elated and satisfied having met and helped some interesting people (including some kids!), worked with some great supervisors, learned a lot of medicine, and even about myself.

I'm remembering the first rule of surgery: "eat when you can, sleep when you can!".
I totally intend to...

if i look kind of miserable here (i wasn't really), it was because a flesh eating bacteria (or possibly an ulcer) was decimating my lower intestine. however, the kind lady in charge of the camp gave me several stomach medications that made me feel better. god bless that lady.

Unfortunately, Roy Orbison had tail and fin rot (caused by flesh eating bacteria) from being kept in dirty water at the pet store (which I will not be frequenting again). If you compare him to the RZA, you can see how frayed Roy Orbison's tail is in this picture, taken the day I brought him home. I did not recognize this as rot, being an ignorant first time betta-buyer. The rot was so advanced already that it was eating his body after only three days and did not respond to meds. RIP Roy Orbison; you were a friendly little fish.
