PALM COAST (CBSMiami/AP) — Health officials in Central Florida are now warning residents about seawater bacteria after a man died from exposure this week.

Authorities in Flagler and Volusia counties are advising residents to avoid eating raw shellfish and exposing open wounds in seawater. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that 59-year-old Henry “Butch” Konietzky died Monday after he was exposed to bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus. He had been fishing for crabs in the Halifax River.

Statewide, 29 cases and nine deaths have been linked to the bacteria this year.

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that normally lives in warm seawater and is in the same family as cholera. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Health officials say people should wear gloves and wash their hands after handling raw shellfish.

In the case of Henry Konietzky, his daughter Sheila said he noticed lesions on his legs several hours after fishing and went to the emergency room with his wife. But the bacteria had already spread through his body, causing his kidneys to shut down.

“We are still in shock,” Sheila Konietzky said. “What’s really devastating is that he fished his whole life. For something like this to take him away from us so quickly, without warning, is really scary.”

At first he thought it was a 'harmless insect bite'.

But little did Henry Konietzky know that, 28 painful hours after noticing a small abrasion on his foot, he would become the ninth person this year to be killed by the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria.

Pictures have emerged of the tiny legion that appeared on the Florida father's right foot on Sunday, the day after he went crabbing in the Halifax River in Florida with his wife, Patty.

This was the first sympton that manifested on Henry Konietzky after he was infected with the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria in a Florida river at the weekend. Mr Konietzky died on Monday after the infection overtook his body

Mr Konietzky had stepped on some ants before getting into the water, sustaining small bites.

Doctors believe this was the gateway that allowed him to become infected by the flesh-eating bacteria, which is considered one of the deadliest strands of bacterium in the world and usually forms every year in the warm saltwater swimming holes of Florida.

As the wound started to fester, the Palm Coast man was rushed to hospital, where he was administered with numerous courses of antibiotics.

'Nothing was touching it. Nothing even phased it,' his sister-in-law, Debbie stack, told Click Orlando.

'This bacteria crept through his body like acid - it was the most horrific I've ever seen in my life' his wife, Patty Konietzky, told ABC News.

Mrs Konietzky said the legions started to spread once they got her husband to the hospital and, 28 hours after being admitted, he died from organ failure.

It is the ninth death in 2013 connected to the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria in the Volusia and Flager counties, with health officials warning locals to take serious care when visiting saltwater spots, especially with open wounds.

However, two men have recovered from the infection after contracting it fishing in the Indian River Lagoon, reported 10 News.

Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally-occurring bacteria in warm sea water that belongs to the same family of bacterium as cholera and requires salt to live.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) the bacteria can also be contracted from eating contaminated raw seafood.

When open wounds on otherwise healthy people are exposed to warm seawater containing the bacteria, the skin can become infected, leading to a breakdown and ulceration of the skin.

Immunocompromised people face a deadlier risk: they have a higher possibility of the bacteria invading the bloodstream, leading to potentially fatal complications.

If the bacteria is ingested, healthy people can experience vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

For people with weaker immune systems, consuming Vibrio vulnificus can infect the bloodstream, leading to 'a severe and life-threatening illness characterized by fever and chills, decreased blood pressure (septic shock), and blistering skin lesions,' according to the CDC.

Bloodstream infections by the bacteria are fatal about 50 per cent of the time.

Patients are treated with antibiotics, and according to the CDC, infected wounds must be treated aggressively - sometimes meaning amputation of an infected limb.

woohoo, happy 4th of july everyone! did a lot of things today. woke up, and hit up the beach with these 2 lovely people. then came home... ate lunch then hit up the pool by my house for a bit. then attempted to go canoeing but it was a little harder than we thought... because we were canoeing in waters we didn't want to fall in because of all the flesh eating bacteria stuff on the news. afterwards, hit up the outlets to do some mini shopping... then finally the bars before the fireworks. hit up seacrets... and just got drink after drinks with these 2. attempted to see the fireworks but by that time, we were all intoxicated so we got pizza instead.

a very legit day and night.

Four other victims are recovering in hospitals after picking up the rare and serious disease in Georgia after picking up the bacteria from cuts and wounds.

Doctors say the cases are unrelated and that the bacteria is not contagious.

The aggressive disease first made headlines when it struck Aimee Copeland, a 24-year-old graduate student from Little Tallapoosa River, who cut her leg when she fell from a homemade zip-wire.

Doctors were forced to amputate her leg, her foot and both her hands as the necrotizing fasciitis spread rapidly through her body.

The second victim of the flesh-eating disease, Lana Kuykendall, 36, noticed the infection on the back of her leg just hours after being released from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, where she gave birth to twins.

She has had seven surgeries to remove the infected flesh and remains in critical condition at Greenville Memorial Hospital in South Carolina, near her home.

Bobby Vaughn, 33, was the third victim. He has been upgraded to good condition after doctors removed two pounds of flesh from his groin.

He became infected after he cut his thigh while cutting weeds in Cartersville.

Paul Bales of Lake Sinclair became victim number four after he cut his leg while installing a new dock at the lake on May 1.

It was a very small cut that didn’t stop the grandfather playing golf the next day but within four days the cut had swelled and he was forced to have his leg amputated.

Despite the bizarre outbreak of the disease, Dr Mike Green, of Macon, said people shouldn't over-react and become paranoid about becoming infected.

It remains very rare, he said.

NECROTIZING FASCIITIS: WHAT CAUSES IT, AND WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

...Necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly known as 'flesh-eating disease', is a rare but extremely vicious bacterial infection. 'Necrotizing' refers to something that causes body tissue to die, and the infection can destroy skin, muscles and fat.

...The disease develops when the bacteria enters the body, often through a minor cut or scrape. As the bacteria multiply, they release toxins that kill tissue and cut off blood flow to the area.

...Because it is so virulent, the bacteria spreads rapidly throughout the body.

...Symptoms include small, red lumps or bumps on the skin, rapidly-spreading bruising, sweating, chills, fever and nausea. Organ failure and shock are also common complications.

...Sufferers must be treated immediately to prevent death, and are usually given powerful antibiotics and surgery to remove dead tissue. Amputation can become necessary if the disease spreads through an arm or leg.

...Patients may undergo skin grafts after the infection has cleared up, to help the healing process or for aesthetic reasons.

This is the church in Khanwake,Quebec in which there is a shrine with the remains of The Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, who will be canonized into Sainthood in October. The foloowing is information on her. It's a long read but it is as short as I could make it by taking bits of this and that to tell Kateris' story.

Kateri Tekakwitha's Sainthood
More than 300 years have passed since Kateri Tekakwitha lived her brief life, but even today people across North America look to her for strength and guidance.
Kateri was born in 1656 in Ossernenon, a Mohawk village located near present day Auriesville, New York. Her father was a Mohawk chief; her mother an Algonquin woman who had been captured by the Mohawk. While her father hadn't converted to Christianity, her mother had, and she taught her daughter to pray in the Christian way.
When Kateri was only four, the community was ravaged by smallpox and she was the only member of her family to survive. But while the disease didn't claim her life, it did take its toll on the young girl. She was left weakened and was covered in scars. The disease had also affected her eyesight, and she was given the name Tekakwitha, which means "she who stumbles into things." She was adopted by her father's brother, who assumed the role of chief.
Following the smallpox epidemic that claimed so many lives, Kateri and her people abandoned Ossernenon and settled across the Mohawk River at Caughnawaga, near present day Fonda, New York. Despite the physical toll smallpox had taken on her, Kateri was a hard worker and her adoptive parents had high hopes for finding her a good husband who could support them in their old age. Kateri, however, had other plans, and showed no interest in marriage.
When French missionaries visited the village, Kateri's uncle was their reluctant host. It was during that visit that Kateri chose the path she would follow. Soon after the visit, Jesuit missionary Father Jacques de Lamberville arrived to set up a permanent mission and, although her uncle had forbidden her to speak to the missionaries, an opportunity soon presented itself and Kateri told de Lamberville of her desire to be a Christian. Kateri converted to Christianity in 1676 and was baptized on Easter Sunday. She was given the Christian name Katherine.
Kateri's devotion to her religion was astounding, even to the missionaries she turned to for teaching and guidance in her new faith. She spent as much time as she could in the chapel, spending almost the entire day there on Sundays and holy days.
A story often told about young Kateri demonstrates her unfoundering commitment to her beliefs. One day, while Kateri was alone in the longhouse, a young man from the community, angry with her because of her beliefs, burst in and threatened to kill her if she did not renounce her religion. As he stood over her, war club in hand, she calmly told him he could take her life, but not her faith. Then she lowered her head and waited for the blow. Her calm and conviction shook the would-be attacker and he fled without harming the girl.
The following year, in an attempt to escape the persecution inflicted upon her because of her beliefs, Kateri fled her village, traveling 200 miles through the wilderness to find refuge in the St. Francis Xavier mission in another community named Caughnawaga-present-day Kahnawake, Quebec-populated by Mohawk people who were much more accepting of the religion brought by the Jesuit missionaries. That Christmas, Kateri made her first communion.
Kateri spent much of her time caring for the sick and elderly among her people, and those around her were touched and inspired by her goodness and devotion. But Kateri herself felt the need to do penance for her weakness and her sins, and this penance was often painful for the young girl.
In 1679, she visited a convent in nearby Ville-Marie (now Montreal) and was so impressed with the way the nuns lived their lives that on her return to Kahnawake, she asked to set up her own convent. Her request was refused, but still she chose to take the vow of chastity, which she did on March 25,1679, becoming the first Native American woman to do so.
Then, in the winter of 1679, Kateri's always precarious health began to worsen. She began suffering from headaches and stomach pains, and her strength dwindled. For months she was unable to move from her bed. And then, on April 17, 1680, she received communion for the last time, whispered to those around her that she would remember them in heaven, professed her love to Jesus and the Virgin Mary, and slipped away. Her last words were Iesos konoronkwa (“Jesus, I love you”).
It is said that 15 minutes after her death, the smallpox scars that had marked Kateri for most of her life disappeared completely, replaced by a radiant beauty. Those who witnessed this event believed it was a sign that she was truly special, and felt the transformation occurred at the moment Kateri saw God.
Many people reported seeing visions of Kateri appear to them after her death, and in the years following, many miracles were attributed to her, with gravely ill people being cured by touching the cross she had held on her deathbed or when given powder that had come from her tomb. Even today, people have claimed miraculous recoveries after praying to Kateri.
Kateri was venerated by Pope Pius XII in 1943; and in 1980, in front of hundreds of Native Americans who traveled to Rome to witness the event, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II, making her the first Native American to be beatified and declared Blessed. In order for her to be canonized and declared a saint, another miracle attributed to Kateri must first be proved.
During a Dec. 19,2011 meeting with Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect for the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Pope Benedict XVI signed the decree recognizing the miracle needed to canonize Blessed Kateri, whose intercession is credited for the miraculous healing of a Washington state boy who had been afflicted with a flesh-eating bacteria.
The Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, Lily of the Mohawks, is the patron of the environment, people in exile, people ridiculed for their religious beliefs, orphans, and she was also named a patroness of World Youth Day in 2002 in Toronto. . In Canada, the Feast of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha is celebrated on April 17, the anniversary of her death. In the United States, it is commemorated on July 14.
Kateri Tekakwitha’s principle relics are enshrined within a sealed marble tomb at St. Francis Xavier Mission, now at Kahnawake, near Montreal. When the original mission was moved, her remains were exhumed and moved. In the late 19th century, a monument was erected over her original burial site.
The Mohawk community of Kahnawake is welcoming the news that Kateri Tekakwitha will be named a saint on October 21st,2012 in Rome.
She will be the first Native American saint.

By DANIEL WAGNER | Associated Press – 5 hours ago ... Friday, May 11, 2012

finance.yahoo.com/news/calls-toughen-regulation-jpmorgan-...

WASHINGTON (AP) — JPMorgan Chase faced intense criticism Friday for claiming that a surprise $2 billion loss by one of its trading groups was the result of a sloppy but well-intentioned strategy to manage financial risk.

More than three years after the financial industry almost collapsed, the colossal misfire was cited as proof that big banks still do not understand the threats posed by their own speculation.
"It just shows they can't manage risk — and if JPMorgan can't, no one can," said Simon Johnson, the former chief economist for the International Monetary Fund.

JPMorgan is the largest bank in the United States and was the only major bank to remain profitable during the 2008 financial crisis. That lent credibility to its tough-talking CEO, Jamie Dimon, as he opposed stricter regulation in the aftermath.

But Dimon's contention that the $2 billion loss came from a hedging strategy that backfired, not an opportunistic bet with the bank's own money, faced doubt on Friday, if not outright ridicule.

"This is not a hedge," said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chair of a subcommittee that investigated the crisis.

He said the trades were instead a "major bet" on the direction of the economy, as published reports suggested.

On Friday, Dimon told NBC News, for an interview airing Sunday on "Meet the Press," that he did not know whether JPMorgan had broken any laws or regulatory rules. He said the bank was "totally open" to regulators.

The head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mary Schapiro, told reporters that the agency was focused on the JPMorgan loss but declined to comment further.

JPMorgan's disclosure Thursday recharged a debate about how to ensure that banks are strong and competitive without allowing them to become so big and complex that they threaten the financial system when they falter.

The JPMorgan loss did not cause anything close to the panic that followed the September 2008 failure of the Lehman Brothers investment bank. But it shook the confidence of the financial industry.

Within minutes after trading began on Wall Street, JPMorgan stock had lost almost 10 percent, wiping out about $15 billion in market value. It closed down 9.3 percent.

Fitch Ratings downgraded the bank's credit rating by one notch, while Standard & Poor's cut its outlook JPMorgan to "negative," indicating a credit-rating downgrade could follow.

Morgan Stanley and Citigroup closed down more than 4 percent, and Goldman Sachs closed down almost 4 percent. The broader stock market was down only slightly for the day.

Dimon gave few details about the trades Thursday beyond saying they involved "synthetic credit positions," a type of the complex financial instruments known as derivatives.

Enhanced oversight of derivatives was a pillar of the 2010 financial overhaul law, known as Dodd-Frank, but the implementation has been delayed repeatedly and will not take effect until the end of this year at the earliest.

JPMorgan's trades show that the derivatives market remains too opaque for regulators to oversee effectively, said Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., one of the law's namesakes.

"When a supposedly responsible, well-run organization could make such an enormous mistake with derivatives, that really blows up the argument, 'Oh, leave us alone, we don't need you to regulate us,'" he said.

Criticism of the bank did not stop with its traditional chorus of detractors. It also came from Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., a prominent member of the Senate Banking Committee who has received $10,000 since January 2011 from JPMorgan's political action committee, the most any candidate has received.
Corker, a leader of a failed effort last year to block a Federal Reserve rule that slashed bank profits from debit cards, called for a hearing "as expeditiously as possible" into the events surrounding JPMorgan's loss.

Tim Ryan, president of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, a trade group, said it was impossible to legislate or regulate risk out of the financial system.

"My hope is that this is viewed as bona fide hedging, but it went wrong," he said in an interview. "A mistake was made. Money is going to be lost. It's not customer money. It's not government money. It's JPMorgan's money, the shareholders of JPMorgan."

No one seemed to suggest Friday that JPMorgan had broken a law. But the mistake added a wrinkle to the still-unsettled discussion about how the financial industry should be regulated in the aftermath of 2008.

"This just tells you that we are a long, long way from getting our arms around this whole 'too big to fail' issue," said Cliff Rossi, a former top risk executive for Citigroup, Countrywide and other big financial companies.

Immediately after the crisis, a time of popular outrage over bailouts and investment losses, there was broad public support for an overhaul of bank regulations.

The changes promoted by the Obama administration were in many cases similar to what the financial industry had sought before the crisis: Consolidation of regulators and oversight of the multi-trillion-dollar marketplace for derivatives.

Regulators are still drafting hundreds of rules under the 2010 law. As Wall Street has returned to record profits, and executives to million-dollar bonuses, banks have fought to soften those rules.
In particular, the industry has fought hard against a few provisions that might have prevented the problems at JPMorgan.

One is the so-called Volcker rule, which will prohibit banks from trading for their own profit. The rule is still being written, and the Federal Reserve has said it will begin enforcement in 2014.

JPMorgan said that its bets were made only to hedge against financial risk. Dimon conceded that the strategy was "egregious" and poorly monitored. But analysts, former bank executives and many lawmakers disagreed.

"This is an exact description of proprietary trading-style activity," Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., told reporters Friday. "This really is a textbook illustration of why we need a strong Volcker rule firewall."

Nancy Bush, a longtime bank analyst at NAB Research and a contributing editor at SNL Financial, said the trades probably crossed that line because they were making money for JPMorgan.

"So they made money on hedges and then they hedged some more," she said. "At some point it goes from being a hedge to being a moneymaker."

JPMorgan was seen as a savior of weaker banks during the financial crisis and the only big bank to escape relatively unscathed. His reputation enhanced, Dimon, 56, has been emboldened to challenge efforts to toughen regulation.

In an interview with the Fox Business Network earlier this year, Dimon said that Paul Volcker, the former Federal Reserve chairman for whom the rule is named "doesn't understand capital markets."

Last year, he questioned the current Fed chair, Ben Bernanke, about the rules and said they might be delaying the recovering of the financial system and the broader economy.

"Has anyone bothered to study the cumulative effect of all these things?" he asked.

Dimon, who grew up in the Queens borough of New York and was groomed by the former Citigroup chief executive Sanford Weill, has also chafed against Occupy Wall Street protesters.

"Acting like everyone who's been successful is bad and that everyone who is rich is bad — I just don't get it," he said at a conference earlier this year.

On Thursday, at about the same time he was breaking news of the $2 billion loss to Wall Street, Dimon sent an email to JPMorgan's 270,000 worldwide employees assuring them that the company was "very strong."

A grandmother has died of a flesh eating disease just five days after she first complained of a burning sensation in her leg.

Phyllis Mason, of North Carolina, is believed to be the sixth victim in the U.S. to be killed by the rare bacterial skin infection called necrotizing faciitis this year.

The 75-year-old was recovering from a pelvic fracture when she contracted the aggressive disease at the end of August.

Doctors believe that Mason contracted the disease from an open sore on her tailbone which she suffered after sitting down so much during her recovery from the fracture.

The disease is typically contracted by people with a weakened immune system and can spread quickly through the victim’s body.

The first warning sign of the disease came on August 31 when Mason felt a burning sensation in her right leg. Becoming worried she texted her son, reported the Fay Observer.

The following day, on September 1, Carl Mason checked on his mother and her leg looked fine.
On August 3, Carl Mason returned to check on his mother after she texted him the previous day saying that her leg was now a little swollen and painful.

When his mother didn’t answer the door, Mason broke in and discovered her lying on the floor, still breathing but with a severely bruised leg.

Doctors first suspected gangrene but then confirmed that the 75-year-old was suffering from necrotizing fasciitis.

Mason died on September 5, five days after complaining about her leg, which by now was entirely blackened.

Because bacteria was still ravaging Mason's body after she died, medical professionals, friends and family had to take precautionary measures against contracting the disease. At her funeral, mourners were kept three foot from the open casket, the paper reported.

Carl Mason told the FayObserver that his mother loved reading to her two-year-old granddaughter and was determined to recover from her fracture.

Earlier this month, Robert Turner, a 32-year-old convicted murderer died from necrotizing fasciitis while he was still serving time in a Chicago prison.

Last month Anthony Hills, 55, from Charleston, died from the aggressive infection and in July seven-year-old Tevita Alatini from Texas was also killed from the condition.

Linda Snyder, a pastor from Sacramento, California, lost her life in June after being infected as did Michigan woman Crystal Spencer, 33.

In May, new mother, Lana Kuykendall, contracted necrotizing fasciitis in a hospital in upstate South Carolina, just after delivering her twin babies.

She underwent 20 surgical procedures to stop the aggressive bacteria spreading but managed to avoid having any limbs amputated.

Earlier in the year the same disease savagely struck Georgia student Aimee Copeland forcing surgeons to amputate all four of her limbs to save her life.

In total at least six Americans have now died from the infection and another eight victims have had limbs amputated.

----- NECROTIZING FASCIITIS: THE DEADLY FLESH-EATING BACTERIA

Necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly known as 'flesh-eating disease', is a rare but extremely vicious bacterial infection. 'Necrotizing' refers to something that causes body tissue to die, and the infection can destroy skin, muscles and fat.

The disease develops when the bacteria enters the body, often through a minor cut or scrape. As the bacteria multiply, they release toxins that kill tissue and cut off blood flow to the area.

Because it is so virulent, the bacteria spreads rapidly throughout the body.

Symptoms include small, red lumps or bumps on the skin, rapidly-spreading bruising, sweating, chills, fever and nausea. Organ failure and shock are also common complications.

Sufferers must be treated immediately to prevent death, and are usually given powerful antibiotics and surgery to remove dead tissue. Amputation can become necessary if the disease spreads through an arm or leg.

Patients may undergo skin grafts after the infection has cleared up, to help the healing process or for aesthetic reasons.

We stand side by side waving our arms beating time in the wind
beautiful and senseless.

I can’t get away from the turbines. The sound is the placental rhythm,
the wind cut by the blade is the same as the heart closing around gulps of blood
is the same as my arms stroking through a pool in summer is the same as your
breath heaving while we make love.

If I could believe that after this is something so different, which I guess nothing is (really different) I would say, and I am saying, that I will miss this rhythm. I will miss the sound of the air moving in and out, the breathing, the and...

Today a family I have been working with let go of their sister/daughter/mother. She is in a cyclone of septic infection. The bacteria are eating her skin and I have taken off huge swaths of her landscape and I am losing. I can’t get ahead of it. I am constantly caught in the backwash. These are the flesh eating bacteria that incite dread when people read about it or see the pseudo-documentaries on cable tv. These are those bugs. The flesh becomes the food and the only treatment is to cut away what is dead. The problem with these infections is that the blood supply to the tissue is inadequate for the antibiotics. A knife is the only hope and it is literally barbaric. The antibiotics wash around the edges of the infection but if the dead tissue is not removed, there is no winning. I took this woman back to the OR five times in ten days. Finally the family looked up, as if seeing her in a new way--or maybe an old, love-filled way and said stop. Essentially, “let the dying finish.” The time beats out the last seconds for her soon and then the next second happens and the next and time does its thing and she will have passed through the windmill herself.

The windmills stand guard over the moments and I want to hug them when I finally hear the might of the air they move. If you pass by them, stop and listen. I am comforted by their neutrality, by the simple progression. Nothing might happen in this one stroke or I might be done in this one, or I might play a C Major 7th, full and round on my guitar, and harness joy and store it until the next moment comes.

A very painful infection has taken place.
There is no return once infection sets in

Necrotizing fasciitis commonly known as flesh-eating disease or Flesh-eating bacteria syndrome is a rare infection of the deeper layers of skin and subcutaneous tissues, easily spreading across the fascial plane within the subcutaneous tissue.

Flickr Necrotizing Fasciitis (Flesh-Eating Bacteriophage.) Model

I made this model of a necrotizing fasciitis bacterium, out of a plastic tube, rubber ball and straws. This is what this terrible flesh-eating bacterium looks like under the microscope. Amazingly, the bacterium has a circular row of teeth at the bottom of its shaft.

Flickr tear sheet

So... ha...

I did a shoot for a magazine in the UK while I was living in New Zealand. A photo friend hooked me up with the gig and the mag flew me down to Christchurch to photograph the subject. This lady had contracted a flesh-eating bacteria after a bikini wax, and it sounded like a totally hellish ordeal. She and her boyfriend were really nice and I had a good time with them even though the weather in Christchurch was shit on the shoot day.

I never asked for a copy or anything, but recently I've started adding tear sheets to my site so I e-mailed and asked them for a scan. Now seeing one of the portraits I took of her with that giant headline, I couldn't help but laugh. Totally surreal!

www.messersmith.name/wordpress/2010/06/19/ants-in-the-sugar/
Though I love living in a tropical paradise I'd be less than honest to say that it's all fun and games. There are minor imperfections. Having had malaria seven times is an example. Horrible things called tropical ulcers and a flesh eating bacteria which attempted to remove my left are other trivial complaints. My recent bout with staph and bacillus bacterial gobbling up my olfactory organs, leaving me odorless (at least as far as I can tell) could have happened anywhere, but upper respiratory infections are very common here. You haven't had a cold until you've had a "tropical cold".

However, the trivial day to day irritations bug me the most. For instance, ants in the sugar: I slipped that pun in so cleverly that you may have missed it. It is also easy to miss the ants in the shot above, because they are the teensy variety. You can't miss them when you take the lid off, though. They scurry around in a panic and try to hide by burrowing into the sugar. You can see them better if you click to enlarge.

You may also note that our sugar is rather odd looking. It smells funny too - not funny ha-ha. No, it's more like funny they forgot to take some of the goop out when they were making it. Some might call it raw sugar. We call it the best we can get.

Here I have enlarged that culprits for you: I honestly don't know how they get in the sugar. We take it straight from the bag and put it into an air-tight plastic container. The lid goes "suck" when you pull it off. One must assume that there are ant eggs in the sugar. Why these are considered a suitable ingredient I don't know either.

Well, enough of that.

Here's an nice fan coral which I shot yesterday on The Henry Leith:

I managed to grab the wrong battery for my Canon G11 on Saturday morning, so I was out of juice half way through the dive.

Here's Richard Jones poking around the stern of the wreck. Rich forgot to load a battery into his camera. Therefore, Rich was the chief dunce of the day:

It's Sunday evening here. I'm pretty wasted from riding three hours on the Harley up the north coast road and back, dodging Harley-eating potholes all the way. I'll have more to say about that tomorrow.

So, I'll cut it short and get some down time. First let me show you the collapsed roof of the pilot house of The Henry Leith:

It's too bad that it finally fell down. I was cool to get into the pilot house and look out at all of the fish swimming around.

Here's one of the better shots that I've ever gotten of a Blackspotted Puffer (Arothron nigropunctatus):

They are very shy, so it's difficult to catch them out in the open.

This Divericate Tree Coral (Gendronephthya roxasia) doesn't move at all, so it's no fuss to get a nice close-up:

Nice detail in that one. It's worth a click to see the full-sized version.

I'll have a Harley story tomorrow and some shots of the Tapira Surfing Club.

Flickr FDR Memorial Entrance
Tags: monument   hat   stone   bronze   washingtondc   washington   districtofcolumbia   tie   jacket   fdrmemorial   fdr   franklindelanoroosevelt   roundglasses
This is a shot of the statue of FDR at the FDR Memorial entrance in Washington DC. It's one of my first forays into multiple exposure processing. I don't know that I'd really call it HDR because it was only two shots. One was with a flash, the other not. When we visited the memorial, the sun was setting, and it would have been great for golden hour type shots here. You can see how fantastic the light was here and here. However, the FDR has high walls all over the place, which blocked most of the direct sunlight. So I took this photo with and without a flash. The slight blurriness of his jacket on the left side of the photo betrays that I did it hand-held.

But, I opened the two photos in photshop and auto-aligned them (what a blessing that feature is!) and experimented with the blend modes and layer order to find a decent blend, In this case, the with-flash layer is on top with the opacity set to about 80% and without-flash layer on bottom set on normal/100%. So, I was fairly happy with the result, but with the auto-aligning, I had to crop the edges of that off. Then I saved that result as a jpg. This allowed me to open the combined image in Camera Raw and tweak the color and light settings there. Once that was satisfactory, I performed the same basic process I did here to get the sculptural details. The best thing is that to my recollection, this is looks very much like it did when I was there, which neither of the two photos I took really did.

On a completely different note, I like this statue much better than the large, main attraction one inside. It's all blotchy green and such. I mean, it's a great sculpture, it's just a shame that it makes him look sickly. I know he wasn't in perfect health when he was alive, but he didn't have a flesh-eating bacteria condition, either. For those checking this out from the Democrat group, I'm not a democrat, but am respectful of others and their views, so please do the same.

I hate hospitals. I really hated spending nine days in quarantine. Especially 800 miles from anywhere I'd even attempt to call home. Apparently it was a neccesary evil though. Doc told me had I gone another 24 hours I'd have lost my arm, and 48 could have killed me. But I did learn some things:

1) MRSA is some wicked shit
2) Morphine is better than sex
3) Trying to hold the robe out of the way and aim with one hand takes alot of coordination.
4) Chicks dig massive scars (until you tell them it was from a flesh eating bacteria)
5) Mike Rowe is the Narrator for Deadliest Catch (I spent alot of time watching discovery channel and speed vision)

Flickr flesh-eating bacteria

Last summer I thought I had been bitten by a spider. It itched like mad. A few days later I had another bite. This went on for a week, and it was making me pretty uncomfortable.

So, I went nuts. Tore the bed apart. Had everything cleaned. Forced Yoyo to go looking for the spider. Got angry when he didn't find it. I admit it, on some level I thought he was harboring it, being an entomologist and all. And why was it only biting me and not him, too?

Then we went to NYC for his birthday. I was looking forward to the trip for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was that for a whole week, the spider wouldn't be able to devour me.

Well, I was wrong. In NYC, I got worse and worse. The itching was terrible. It was all on the left side of my face, and I thought perhaps it was shingles. I made a doctor's appointment for the day we got back to SF.

I was diagnosed with shingles and put on anti-virals. The bad news, though, is that I didn't get better. In fact, I was getting worse. My skin began to crack and bleed, huge eruptions — it felt like my face was on fire. The itching and pain were so bad I couldn't sleep. I called the doctor and told her I was getting worse. She prescribed drugs to dull the nerve pain and pills to help me sleep. But I kept getting worse.

After about 5 more days, it had completely taken over my face and spread all over my torso. I had lost 5 pounds. I went back to the doctor who said there was no way it was shingles and referred me to a dermatologist specializing in infectious diseases.

He properly diagnosed it as a bacterial infection, and once I was on the proper drugs, I felt better within 4 hours. Thank you, Dr Dans!

I didn't take any photos of it at its worst. Honestly, I was too miserable to do that. Loking back on some of my calamities — especially the clothesline and the curb (damn you, Minneapolis!) — I sort of wish I had chronicled them. No, I don't have it at its worst, but I figure it has to go in, as this was one of the bigger calamities of the last few years.

And, for the record, it SUCKED. I would take a cast over this any day.

Romeo and I have been coming home with ticks the past three weekends, and I despise the little blood suckers more than anything...even more than spiders and snakes, but having to get them off as quickly as possible is helping me overcome my fear of them. When I was little, I always ran screaming to my mom or dad. And I had a really nasty case of poison ivy on my arm for the past couple of weeks and had fun telling everyone that it was flesh eating bacteria!

looks a little infected, no?

I scraped the back of my leg on something last weekend, forgot about it for a few days, and it looked like this. I have been self medicating myself with keflex over the weekend,, and applying triple antibiotic ointment to it. Hope it isn't flesh eating bacteria.

Necrotizing fasciitis as caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (the flesh-eating bacteria) begins with a injury that leads to death of the subcutaneous tissues. Although of little consolation, “Flesh-eating bacteria” is a misnomer as the bacteria do not actually eat the tissue. They cause the destruction of skin and muscle by releasing toxins (virulence factors).

If you too want to buy an unsuitable toy for an infant:

365 Days

Medical Knowledge Of The Day #5:
(This is just a very brief overview, please consult a textbook for an accurate description)
Key Word: Necrotizing Fasciitis
Other names: Flesh Eating Bacteria
What is it (Etiology): A RARE deep skin infection (often) caused by the bacteria Streptococcus Pyogenes (a Group A, beta-hemolytic Strep). Necrotizing = death of tissue, Fasciitis = infection of the fascia (tissue layers between skin, muscle, etc...)
How does it work (Pathophysiology): The bacteria releases toxins, one of which is called "superantigen," and the toxins cause tissue death, cause your sensory nerves to stop working, and cause systemic effects (see below).
Symptoms: Usually occurs after an injury to an area where the bacteria can get in. The area quickly swells up, may become red and warm, with severe pain. The skin may even feel crunchy to touch. The area then becomes purple and may even turn black later on with loss of sensation. During the above symptoms there will often be fever and chills, may even have a rapid pulse with low blood pressure and mental confusion. These are the "systemic" effects.
Treatment: Admission to ICU with immediate initiation of IV antibiotics (Ampicillin/Gentamicin/Clindamycin) and then surgery to remove all the affected tissue.

This is the tattoo that almost killed me - and a powerful argument that you should never get tattooed by somebody you don't know. I stupidly thought it would be smart to walk into a shop in my neighborhood, take an appointment with the first artist who had an opening, and get a tattoo that day - all because it was such a simple design. WRONG.

The guy used some sort of ink that didn't agree with me. It got super, super infected and looked like I had the flesh-eating bacteria while it healed. The entire surface area of the tattoo came off in chunks. The result was a mottled, shitty-looking tattoo with a crazy halo around each element - courtesy of the artist going way too deep and the ink spreading out down in the deepest layers of my skin.

These pictures don't even show you how bad the guy butchered me. This is actually after the first round of cleanup work by Kevin Lytel (see other photos for his additional cleanup work). Originally, the exclamation mark was purple and looked just as janky and diseased as the number sign does here.

At any rate, now that it's been cleaned up and incorporated into my sleeve, it looks OK. But my horrible experience with this tattoo helped me realize what I really wanted (an entire mosaic rather than a bunch of unrelated one-off pieces) and how to get it: By developing a relationship with a trustworthy artists with a similar aesthetic and reference points.

At any rate, the actual artwork comes from the comic book "Bratpack" by Rick Veitch. It's the insignia of a character named Dr. Blasphemy who goes around torturing and killing the sidekicks of a bunch of twisted superheroes. It never even occurred to me that people would interpret this tattoo as, basically, the word "FUCK" on my arm. I guess I wasn't thinking on several levels when I got this one.

Preview from my final Perfect Match entry.

Good god, I massively under-estimated the amount of time that would take. See...I was feeling rather uninspired. Writer's block. Something like that.

So I was up until about 6:30 in the morning working on this, then stopped so I could actually sleep, then got up and finished the remaining 4 pictures.

I think the story starts out strong, but 15 slide limit is bloody hard. So I don't really like how it turned out. But I could be biased because I had to cut out so many words that I left it feeling butchered.

I'm a bit nervous for voting to start because I have a feeling it will leave me highly embarrassed. But oh well, I can at least say I got it done!

Lucas is the cutest Sim-child I have ever had. <3

It's 2 am.
After a busy on-call having inserted 3 chest tubes for collapsed lungs, removed 3 appendices, part of 1 lung for cancer, drained an abscess, debrided the dreaded flesh-eating bacteria out of someone, and fashioned a colostomy for an obstructed colon cancer, I'm wrapping up the paperwork and heading to bed. I'm feeling tired, yet elated and satisfied having met and helped some interesting people (including some kids!), worked with some great supervisors, learned a lot of medicine, and even about myself.

I'm remembering the first rule of surgery: "eat when you can, sleep when you can!".
I totally intend to...

Flickr Day 2 - The new job
Tags: mike   rant
Don't miss Part 1

I was dismissed from my current job due to my obsessive fainting and on the grounds that no one liked me.

I spent my days backing countwards, watching The Brady Bunch marathon, in my incarceration by a doctrination of manipulation due to provocation from an alienation of the exploration of my constipation in my frustration of a confrontation to my hallucinations in preparations for alterations. I recently bought a rhyming dictionary.

It was a week of self indulgence, mostly composed of scratching my balls, licking old people and eating mayonnaise. I walked into public schools, dragged my scrotum against the chalkboard, and rewrote history. I initiated conversations with strangers, then ignored them completely. I took photographs of photographing photographers then photographed the photographs, in an attempt to be truly original. I wrote inspirational messages on thousand dollar bills, and discouraging ones on the washroom stalls of methadone clinics, food banks, and homeless shelters, figuring I’d help speed up the inevitable fate of those who struggle against the machine. I did however have a 12-hour philosophical debate with my belly button, and learned that I was born against my will. But then I surrendered to a round or two of masturbation, which made me recollect on how my mother insisted I’d go blind, making me believe that all blind people were in fact compulsive masturbators. I bought gold-plated tweezers to removed a wooden splinter that was pushing against my common sense, which isn’t as common as people would make you believe, since 1972, only to get another one, as I reached for my apartment door. Started doing abstract photography. I went a layer deeper than everyone though. No subject, no film, no camera, I just think about it.

Looking through the classifieds for porn, I came across a note that read “Lost - $20, if found, just keep it!”
Another ad reached out and tickled me.
“Do you get up in the morning and go to bed at night?”
Yes, I exclaimed!
“Then this medication is for you”
“Dammit!” I bickered, “hooked again”

Then, like a beacon, I came across “Employee Wanted”

“I can do that!” I said to the purple elephant in the corner, then forced down a pill to make it go away.

The job interview consisted of a starring contest in a back alley with a man whose breath smelled of the color magenta and who had a wooden leg with a real foot. I filled out the application with the blood of a French barmaid, who in the late summer of ‘72, was beaten and raped by 7 schoolboys in the back parking lot of the Dairy Queen, then forced a 2-dollar bill down her throat and left her to die, in an attempt to attain higher learning.

I struggled against the application, but then triumphed over it in the arm wrestling round.
Sex: Umm... I wrote “occasionally?”
In Case Of Emergency Notify: Umm... a doctor?
Ever been convicted of a crime: No, I proudly stated.
Why: Umm... never been caught?
It then asked me to write a 2000 page essay on the irony of doing laundry on a Sunday.
By the time I got home, they had already left me a message that the job was mine. It was dated 2 hours before I saw the job listing. But here’s the strange part. They left the message before the beep.

The first day -

My job description changed from alphabeticalizing vegetables, to running the country, with a 30% pay cut and a secret handshake. My computer consisted of 10 delicately placed paper clips and 40 wooden pixels. I downloaded porn and it gave me a splinter. My co-workers were headless goats in human skin, who sought to wash my socks and... I took another pill, and they shifted back into humans. Pretentious pretenders pretending their perverted perversions and presuming presumptuous presumptions. They would kneel in the eastmost corner, and assassinate each others character, then congratulate themselves on being masters of the universe, in an orgy of cock sucking executives. They used words like Kafkaesque and Jeffersonian, and sought to be offended by the word moist. They would occasionally circle my desk, calling me a philistine.

The second day -

I went through the charter of rights, and exchange vowels for consonants. Because I took a 2 minute bathroom break, I caused a flood in Constantinople. This girl ran through the office, sympathetic to the cause. “I can’t believe this is happening to me”, she kept saying, as she handed out t-shirts with a picture of her ovaries... and the word moist captioned beneath. I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering. I saw a subliminal advertising executive, but only for a second.

Lunch -

I took out my slap and tickle sandwich, but a flesh-eating bacteria hitched a ride, and by the time I opened it, it had completely eaten my lunch. I attempted to reason with it, and ended up engaging it in a philosophical debate on the perplexity of portable vacuum cleaners. My 12:15 turd texted me with hugs and kisses and idiotic emoticons. The first stall was occupied by a transsexual transgendered transient transvestite. In the second stall, I could make out Norman Rockwell beating up a child. So I shat in the coffee maker, which incidently, was a secret additive that went on to sell billions and is now a huge chain of coffee shops. A cup is only 2 cents, with an imposed taxation of 2 childhood memories and a gentle demeanor. I have yet to see royalties.

The third day -

I began the day by washing windows, and ended up stealing the old age security from 25 000 Americans. I engaged in a bout of baby kicking, then took a baby shower. I laughed at those who laugh at me. But in my karmic disobedience, the toilet bowl peed on me, the sidewalk walked all over me, the elevator took me for a ride, and my sandwich took a bite out of me.

Lunch -

I had a meeting with the Prime Minister of the seven-eleven down the street, which is now open 24 hours but not all at once. She was breast feeding dead abandoned fetuses, as her vagina kept spilling out of her pants. She kept running her hand across my crotch and licking it. She spoke of racial hangings, rape and stealing dimes from charities, the called me a vegetarian. I said I liked movies about potato skins, and she got offended. She clicked her calves together and disappeared. I noticed she left behind a small piece of paper. On it was a secret recipe, which called for a child’s breath, the opinion of a fool, directions to the beach, a lazy Sunday afternoon, an insensitive comment, and a button hole.

Unfortunately, Roy Orbison had tail and fin rot (caused by flesh eating bacteria) from being kept in dirty water at the pet store (which I will not be frequenting again). If you compare him to the RZA, you can see how frayed Roy Orbison's tail is in this picture, taken the day I brought him home. I did not recognize this as rot, being an ignorant first time betta-buyer. The rot was so advanced already that it was eating his body after only three days and did not respond to meds. RIP Roy Orbison; you were a friendly little fish.
