Last Friday, i had captured one of the best moments of my duration of carspotting. Firstly, this is a Maserati 3200GT, the first of which i've ever spotted. However, in front of the Maserati, is a Land Rover Discovery 4, with a camera operator and huge television camera, hanging out the back of the car. My initial thought when i saw both cars was "TOP GEAR IN YORK???".

It wasn't Top Gear, however it was something just as cool in my opinion. I photographed the cars, then reviewed the images. I was shocked to find out that it was actually the Wheeler Dealers presenters, Mike Brewer and Edd China, both in the Maserati, being filmed by the camera car. The inside of the Maser was fitted with Go-Pro style cameras too. A little research confirmed that the Discovery Channel are indeed selling this Maserati 3200GT.

Two words about this experience: Holy S**t.

On May 1st, I was privileged to be part of a Lowell Observatory staff trip down to Happy Jack, Arizona, to see the recently completed Discovery Channel Telescope. This instrument, when commissioned and debugged, will be the flagship research telescope for our observatory's astronomers.

The project's planning and design took almost twenty years. The actual construction began in 2005, and just finished a few months ago. Now begins the crucial testing phase, called "engineering first light," which will ultimately lead to the "science first light," or official commissioning, late this month or in early June, when the telescope takes its first scientific measurements.

It is a 4 meter class telescope, with a primary mirror 4.3m in diameter. It is the fifth largest in the continental U.S., and one of the most sophisticated telescopes ever constructed. The final cost of the project came to just over $53 million, split between Lowell Observatory and Discovery Communications. As such, the mission of this telescope will be split between research and public education.

A Whitetail Doe in Big Meadows at Shenandoah National Park, VA.

Did you happen to see the Whitetail Doe/Fawn/Coyote segment in Episode 3 of the Discovery Channel series 'North America': Learn Young Or Die?

For those of you familiar with the Big Meadows landscape, a lot of that footage probably looked familiar to you. That's because the majority of that footage was filmed in Big Meadows on the morning of June 14th, 2011 by award winning cinematographer, Martyn Colbeck.

Thanks to the 'magic' of film making as described in an earlier post, the viewer has no idea that footage from various dates and locations are stitched together to convey a storyline and sequence of events. With this particular segment, they lead you to believe all of the meadow footage is from a Grand Teton's meadow, of which some of it is as they do switch back and forth - but the majority of the meadow footage is of Big Meadows.

At least Discovery did give SNP 'some' location credit on the episode page, but you have to click on the Appalachian Mountains link to see the list of locations on the map. Not sure what politics are involved behind the excluding of the SNP location footage, but I really don't care about that because it was a lifetime experience for me, I got paid well, met some incredibly talented and important people in the film industry, plus I think this series is one of the best Discovery productions ever created in my opinion. And all of this is due to my Flickr photostream, where they came across my photos and then contacted me.

THANKS FOR VIEWING!

Black Bear Sow & Cub - Shenandoah National Park, VA

EXPLORED May 22nd, 2013

The Discovery Channel series North America premiered this past Sunday night (May 19th) and quite a few people have been asking me about the Black Bears that were shown in Episode 1 'Born to be Wild'. So I decided to create this post in hopes it will clarify a few items (my last post about it is here).

Yes those are the SNP bears that I helped the film crew locate, but they are not the sow and cub which are shown in the beginning in a den, those 2 bears were filmed elsewhere about a month before the film crew came to SNP. The coyote is also from SNP, but wasn't in the same location as the Bears, it was filmed in the adjoining woods next to Big Meadows about 3 weeks later. The 'magic' of film making :-) The 2 Whitetail fawns shown playing were also from Big Meadows. The Wild Turkey gobbler seen in the ending segment of Episode 2 was also filmed in the Big Meadows area.

I am not sure what happened to the filming company Wild Horizons LTD. Their web site has been taken down and the email bounces as well. Plus in the beginning of all this, the series was named Wild Planet: North America, but at release time it simply became North America. I was quite disappointed that the close-up footage of the cub nursing was not shown, and some other footage as well - hopefully that will be shown in an upcoming episode.

I also find it to be rather odd that Shenandoah National Park is not included in the Location list of the episode information on this page: dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/north-america/episode-guide/ep.... I'm puzzled by this - they spent 4 weeks here between April and June and paid me a couple thousand dollars. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the split out from the Wild Horizons film crew, not sure though. I submitted a few comments on that episode page about it but they didn't approve them to be displayed. (UPDATE: they have since removed the comments section!)

BTW, this post has 3 other images in the 1st comment box below it ( first 2 are video clip stills), but due to the new Flickr layout, not all comments are displayed after the first few comments are posted....now they make you click on a link to 'View XX more comments'.

We've been watching Stormchasers on Discovery Channel for years, and the National Geographic specials before then. And we're looking forward to seeing Tornado Alley in IMAX when it comes out in March. So we were pretty surprised to park right next to TIV2 in the movie theater parking lot in Mira Mesa. Too bad nobody was around.

Well, there were some people around. A girl nearby said she was "star struck, even thought it's just a vehicle" and clearly identified it as TIV2. Definitely a fan of the show. We in San Diego need to get our weather on TV.

It was gone when we returned -- we hope they weren't too ticked off by having to wiggle out of the spot, but, parking is crazy in that lot.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

About the photo:
A 7-8 month old Whitetail Fawn that was rooting through snow for acorns - I've been trying to get a decent face shot of a Whitetail for a long time and this one almost satisfies me - but really prefer to have a straight on look.

About the post:
I've been busting at the seams to tell this news!!! There's a good possibility that SNP may have some footage in an upcoming Discovery Channel documentary: WILD PLANET: NORTH AMERICA.

Wild Horizons is currently producing this seven-part landmark series for the Discovery Channel. I was contacted in December 2010 by Evie Wright, a UK-based documentary filmmaker with Wild Horizons. What's awesome to me is that she saw my SNP wildlife photos here on Flickr and that is what initiated our correspondence - isn't the Internet such a powerful medium?! So I am going to help them as much as possible while they are here and hopefully I can get them positioned into key areas for bears, bear cubs, coyotes, whitetail fawns, etc. to make it worthwhile for them. This is such a grand opportunity for Shenandoah to be on 'the big stage' - keep your fingers crossed that the wildlife cooperates!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using the full power of cutting-edge film technology, Discovery Channel is teaming with Wild Horizons and Keith Scholey, formerly head of the BBC’s Natural History Unit, in a multiyear production deal to capture the world, continent by continent in high definition, as its never been seen before. Fully commissioned by Discovery Channel for premiere on its networks worldwide, WILD PLANET: NORTH AMERICA began filming in 2009 and will kick off the project.

This image is set for publication in "The Daily Book of Photography" due out in the autumn of 2010.

This is a stack of five images depicting at least seven cloud-to-ground lightning strikes and several more cloud-to-cloud discharges. Also seen are three "ghost" images of a NOAA Weather Observer who was walking around in the foreground (see full story with image here ).

Several people in California were killed by lightning during the last week of thunderstorms. Do not go out to try this without educating yourself about the dangers and working to minimize your exposure to the threat.

Storm Chasing
Placer County, California

California is experiencing a period of thunderstorms that sometimes occurs prior to the long dry season. Last year a spate of similar storms touched off more than 1,000 wildfires across the state.

For those of you who know me, I can't resist getting out with the camera whenever the lightning comes through. I live in one of the most lightning-free zones in America, so every opportunity is golden. After all, you can't win if you don't play!

Tonight's lightning show was amazing! The cell depicted here was active at a rate of 40-60 lightning discharges per minute, though most were cloud-to-cloud and well embedded. As a comparison, most cells that I've witnessed here in California discharge at a rate of less than once per minute.

Around here, it's hard to find good vantage points that offer both a good view and safety from being struck. Tonight, I rolled into a new spot, now one of my favorites. Shortly after I set up and began taking photos, a vehicle pulled along-side. Out jumped a gentleman who introduced himself as a NOAA weather spotter.

Undeterred by my image taking, he loped up a small embankment and into my frame. Not wanting to break the string of my images, I asked the gentleman's wife to grab the flashlight I keep in my truck. Yes, it's there for auto emergencies, but more importantly for light-painting during long exposures! I then asked our NOAA observer to stand very still, and proceeded to paint him with the flashlight. Did this gentleman disrupt me? No! Incorporating him produced one of the best images of the evening. I wish I could take credit for the cloud-to-ground lightning that frames him, but hey, some things are pure luck.

Loads of fun ........ but don't try this at home!

From the Valentine’s Day launch – burning love & rockets!

It was a perfect launch day. A film crew from Discovery Channel was shooting a special “When Rockets Go Wrong” (which just so happens to be the title of my TED talk from 2007).

They did a mockup of a A4 (V2 precursor) for their example. It was about 18’ tall and fabricated out of aluminum. They had it rigged to begin lifting off, tip over and explode on its side on the pad.

Photo by Rick Dickinson (and please note that this spectacle was not part of the ROC launch events); prelaunch shot of the V2 below.

The Discovery Channel is onboard for several days to film for "Mean Machines" (I always thought the Discovery Channel was about animal porn) Anyway, I digress. Apparently it will be shown during February and it will be an hour long, and that will be only for the foundations, so they will be back again for when we do the top-sides. As for me, I will be snoozing for an hour sometime during February....

Tibeto-Burman speaking Burmans, or the Bamar, began migrating to the Ayeyarwady valley from present-day Yunnan's Nanzhao kingdom starting in 7th century AD. Filling the power gap left by the Pyu, the Burmans established a small kingdom centred in Bagan in 849. But it was not until the reign of King Anawrahta (1044-1077) that Bagan's influence expanded throughout much of present-day Burma.

After Anawrahta's capture of the Mon capital of Thaton in 1057, the Burmans adopted Theravada Buddhism from the Mons. The Burmese script was created, based on the Mon script, during the reign of King Kyanzittha (1084-1112). Prosperous from trade, Bagan kings built many magnificent temples and pagodas throughout the country – many of which can still be seen today.

Bagan's power slowly waned in 13th century. Kublai Khan's Mongol forces invaded northern Burma starting in 1277, and sacked Bagan city itself in 1287. Bagan's over two century reign of Ayeyarwady valley and its periphery was over.

Buddhism is broadly recognized as being composed of two major branches:

* Theravada, which has a widespread following in Southeast Asia
* Mahayana (including Pure Land, Zen, Nichiren and Vajrayana), found throughout East Asia. It should be noted that in some methods of classification, Vajrayana is considered a third branch.

While Buddhism remains most popular within these regions of Asia, both branches are now found throughout the world.

Burma, officially the Union of Myanmar, is the largest country by geographical area in mainland Southeast Asia, or Indochina. The country is bordered by the People's Republic of China on the northeast, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, India on the northwest, and the Bay of Bengal to the southwest with the Gulf of Martaban and Andaman Sea defining its southern periphery. One-third of Burma's total perimeter, 1,930 kilometers (1,199 mi), forms an uninterrupted coastline.

Buddhism is a family of beliefs and practices considered by most to be a religion and is based on the teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as "The Buddha" (the Awakened One), who lived in the northeastern region of the Indian subcontinent. He likely died around 400 BCE. Buddhists recognize him as an awakened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end their suffering by understanding the true nature of phenomena, thereby escaping the cycle of suffering and rebirth (saṃsāra), that is, achieving Nirvana. Among the methods various schools of Buddhism apply towards this goal are: ethical conduct and altruistic behaviour, devotional practices, ceremonies and the invocation of bodhisattvas, renunciation of worldly matters, meditation, physical exercises, study, and the cultivation of wisdom.

Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, Killed by Stingray

Steve Irwin, the popular Australian film and television personality, environmentalist and animal rights advocate—known to millions of fans worldwide as The Crocodile Hunter—was killed Monday after being stung in the chest by a stingray. The incident occurred during a diving expedition while Irwin was filming an underwater documentary near the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44 years old.

Irwin collapsed at Batt Reef, Low Isle, near the resort town of Port Douglas in Queensland, Australia at approximately 11 a.m. local time, according to a statement issued by the Queensland Police Service. Crew members aboard Irwin’s boat, Croc One, called emergency services and performed CPR on Irwin as they rushed him by boat to the nearest town. An emergency helicopter was dispatched as soon as Irwin’s crew called for medical treatment, but Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Irwin owned and operated the Australia Zoo in Queensland, which he expanded and renamed after taking over the business from his parents, naturalists Lyn and Bob Irwin. He was famous worldwide for his enthusiastic trademark cry of “Crikey!” and his passion for wildlife, which were showcased in feature films and a hit television series, The Crocodile Hunter, that aired internationally on the Discovery Channel.

Stingrays have wide flat bodies that look almost like wings as they swim gracefully through the water. They have spiny, serrated tails that contain venom and can inflict painful injuries, but stingrays are usually not aggressive and the wounds they inflict are rarely fatal to humans. It is believed that Irwin either suffered a form of cardiac arrest as a result of the puncture wound to his chest, or that the bayonet-like barb of the stingray actually pierced his heart. The exact details will not be known until an autopsy is performed.

Irwin is survived by his wife and co-star, Terri, an American from Eugene, Oregon, their daughter Bindi Sue, who is 8 years old, and their 2-year-old son Bob.

CAIRNS, Australia Sep 4, 2006 (AP)— Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous bard on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.

"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.

Crew members aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said.

Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchword "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter." First broadcast in Australia in 1992, the program was picked up by the Discovery network, catapulting Irwin to international celebrity.

He rode his image into a feature film, 2002's "The Crocodile Hunters: Collision Course" and developed the wildlife park that his parents opened, Australia Zoo, into a major tourist attraction.

"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet," Stainton told reporters in Cairns. "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, 'Crocs Rule!'"

Prime Minister John Howard, who hand-picked Irwin to attend a gala barbecue to honor President Bush when he visited in 2003, said he was "shocked and distressed at Steve Irwin's sudden, untimely and freakish death."

"It's a huge loss to Australia," Howard told reporters. "He was a wonderful character. He was a passionate environmentalist.
