Footdee is an area of Aberdeen, Scotland known locally as "Fittie". It is an old fishing village at the east end of the harbour. The name is actually folk etymology. Far from being "Foot of the Dee/Fit o the Dee", it is actually a corruption of a former dedication to a "St Fothan".

The area has had a settlement as far back as the Medieval times and the first recorded reference to the area of Fittie was in the year 1398. This village was slightly further North than where Footdee is now located. It would have been near to where the St Clement's Church is located.

Footdee is a particularly interesting example of a planned housing development purpose-built to re-house Aberdeen's local fishing community. Laid out in 1809 by John Smith, then Superintendent Of The Town's Public Works. Smith went on to establish himself as one of Aberdeen's key architects. Occupying an isolated spit of land to the SE of Aberdeen's city centre, its regimented squares have been described as a cross between the neo-classical aspirations of Aberdeen and the close-knit fishing communities of the north-east.

The two squares of 'Fish Town' (known as Footdee), originally contained 28 single-storey thatched houses although this increased when the later Middle Row (circa 1837) and Pilot Square (circa 1855) were added. The entrances on each of the North and South squares were filled in the 1870s by William Smith (son of John and architect of Balmoral Castle). He also added additional storeys to the East and West sides of South Square creating a tenement feel. This was an attempt to ease crowding resulting from an influx of fishing families from other less prosperous areas and to help try to enforce the 'one-house-one-family' rule.

The Town Council decided to start selling the dwellings to occupiers in 1880, beginning a period of incremental development and reconstruction. Additional storeys and dormers were added piecemeal by the new owners as funds allowed. The result is one of individuality expressed within the constraints of a strictly formal plan and is a contributing factor to the special architectural and historical interest of Footdee as a whole.

Throughout the 19th century, 'tarry sheds' were added to the communal land within the squares opposite each dwelling and now every dwelling has its own shed. Originally constructed from drift wood and other found materials, the sheds have been built and rebuilt in an idiosyncratic manner over the years in a variety of materials with rendered brick now predominating slightly (2006). Some timber built sheds remain, predominantly on the North side of North Square.

North Square Mission Hall occupies the central area of the North Square, reflecting its significance as an integral part of village life. The building is plain, with simple detailing throughout, and as such, responds sympathetically to its setting and context. Known locally as 'the schoolie' the hall was built for general as well as religious purposes and continues to operate as a multi-purpose meeting space.

The entire Footdee village was added to the statutory list in 1967 as a single entity. The village was subsequently given Conservation Area status in 1968. At resurvey in 2006, each building within the Conservation Area was re-assessed separately. Key examples, demonstrating both individual architectural interest and representing the history and development of the village as a whole, were selected for listing.

On an 1828 map, the new housing squares were specifically labelled 'Fish Town'. 'Footdee' referred to the larger area from St. Clement's Church to 'Fish Town'. Later, the name 'Footdee' was erroneously used to refer specifically to the housing squares, with 'Fish Town' becoming forgotten.

On Tuesday 25 September 2012, Footdee became covered in foam from the sea after experiencing strong wind and rain conditions. The effect was like a blanket of snow and this made the UK national news.

The most recent and authoritative dating places the larger cross from the early part of the 9th century, and the smaller from about the middle of that century.[4] Older theories, now outdated, included the view that they were erected to commemorate the conversion to Christianity of Peada of Mercia about 653.[5][6] Other sources date them to the 9th century.[1][2] The original site of the crosses is unknown and it is believed that they were brought to Sandbach in the Middle Ages.[2] The earliest documentary evidence is by William Smith, the Rouge-Dragon Pursuivant at Arms of Elizabeth I, who was from Nantwich. In 1585 he wrote 'two square crosses of stone, on steps, with certain images and writings thereon graven [standing] hard together.[7][8] Either after the Reformation or during the Civil War they were thrown down[2] and their parts were scattered over a wide area.[5] Larger pieces of the crosses were found as far away as Oulton and Tarporley while smaller pieces were found on various sites in Sandbach. In the early 19th century they were collected together and in 1816 were reassembled and erected under the direction of George Ormerod, the Cheshire historian.[4]

The crosses now consist of two upright columns set in sockets on a base of three stepped stones. The northern cross is the taller and has a mutilated head. The southern cross is truncated and has a mutilated head from a different cross.[2] The crosses have always been a pair and were carved by the same hand. They depict religious scenes, doll-like heads and beasts in panels, together with vine-scrolls, course interlace patterns and some dragons.

Balmoral has been one of the residences for members of the British Royal Family since 1852, when the estate and its original castle were purchased privately by Prince Albert, consort to Queen Victoria. They remain as the private property of the royal family and are not the property of the Crown.

Soon after the estate was purchased by the royal family, the existing house was found to be too small and the current Balmoral Castle was commissioned. The architect was William Smith of Aberdeen, although his designs were amended by Prince Albert.

The castle is an example of Scots Baronial architecture, and is classified by Historic Scotland as a category A listed building.[1] The new castle was completed in 1856 and the old castle demolished shortly thereafter.

In 1835, a parthenon inspired school building stood on College Hill, New York. It was destroyed by a massive fire in 1917, sometime after the place had been donated by William Smith to the town for a park. The current parthenon inspired shelter was rebuilt in 1937 as a memorial to the man who donated the land. It was built by the WPA, an organization which helped create jobs for the unemployed during the great depression. The impressive cloud formations were a treat to watch that afternoon from the highest point in the city.

"The William and Robert Smith vault, belonged to one of the early Baltimore's most successful and accomplished families.
William Smith followed his brother John from Lancaster, PA to Baltimore in 1761, along with other Scots-Irish flour merchant families. Smith helped transform Baltimore from a raw town of some 1500 into an international port city. He was also one of the founders of the First Presbyterian Church, whose members established this burying ground in 1786."

A passage which runs from Lincoln Cathedral to the Medieval Bishop's Palace in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

The hall was originally constructed in 1163 by Bishop Robert de Chesney before being almost completely rebuilt by Bishop Hugh of Avalon between 1186-1200. The palace was damaged during Lincolnshire Rising of 1536 but rapidly repaired by Bishop William Smith. During the English Civil War it was used as a prison.

In 1652 the Palace was sold to Col James Berry and converted into a private residence, while the lodgings continued to be used much of the other buildings fell into disrepair. In 1838 conservation work was carried out by Charles Mainwaring adding stables a coach house and rebuilding gatehouses.

The palace returned to Diocese under Bishop Kay in 1841 with restoration work being carried out to Alnwick Tower, Edward King House and the chapel over the following half a decade.

It was last used as bishop’s residence in 1948, then becoming partly diocesan offices, conference and retreat centre, The Old Palace Hotel and the ownership of the ruins passing to English Heritage.

Flickr Buckden Towers & Church [Explored] 28/08/2013

Buckden Towers, originally known as Buckden Palace, was an important residence belonging to the powerful Bishops of Lincoln. The first residence at Buckden would have been built of wood. Around 1225 Bishop Hugh de Wells built a new house of stone.

This house was extended by the influential bishop, Robert Grosseteste, who added a great hall. A devastating fire in 1291 destroyed most of the 13th century buildings, of which only the foundations remain. The final stage of building took place under the direction of Bishop John Russell (1480-1494). Bishop Russell's coat of arms can be seen on the Inner Gatehouse. To this was added a new chapel by Bishop William Smith (1495-1514) one of the founders of Brasenose College, Oxford.

The University of Oxford Natural History Museum in its Victorian splendour. One of those buildings that epitomizes its era, here in the use of medievalism, industrialism and technology to combine into something that could oly had been produced In the C19th.

Had a frustrating time here trying to get my angle. There were a lot of temporary display boards that needed to be snuck behind, and the light was flat and the museum hot. All added up to a bit of a grumpy architect.

Demolition moving forward. Makes me sad seeing how so many generations of Huntingdon folk went to school here. The community center is building a new facility in its place. Digital photo/Photoshop. (05/2008)

• It's official: My camera is fouled up. Mystery blur (despite clean and crystal-clear lens) has spread southward from middle of image. Suggestions on decent camera models welcome as the search begins. In the meantime, messed up pictures are fodder for Photoshop experiments.

not sure what the middle name was. Sic something (unreadable).

Born ? (unreadable)

Died: Feb (?) 1903, 1906 or 1908

You can tell it's a pulpet with a bible at the top - there's an arch with what appears to be gates opening just above the name.
