At some point in time, he must have suffered a knock on the noggin which caused him to loose his head. For many years, the head was held to the body with soap, a common household fix for injuries of this sort. When we acquired it, we had it professionally repaired but left the crack showing. The photo below shows the mend. The figurine commemorates the Scottish hero, William Wallace (Of "Braveheart" movie fame) who led the Scots in an uprising against the English in 1296. What a busy day! Firstly, we walked the obligatory HNDRSN chiptrail before driving to Century Rd. and walking the pathway thru to the Lochside Trail (at Mann trucking) via cumberland Court and Cumberland Road. Then we went to Beckwith Park in Saanich to walk around the small at its centre. We parked the limo near Lake Hill School and St. Margaret's Private School. Afterward, we drove along Wallace Drive to photograph that section of the Interurban Trail where it passes thru the Federal Experimental Farm. A new condominium development is slated for the intersection at Wallace Drv. at East Saanich Road so we got photographs of this before it is gone -- like everything else we cherish. The gradens here reside on the old BCER (British Columbia Electric Railway) right-of-way (RoW) and are maintained by community volunteer members of the Saanichton Village Association (SVA). The 143rd Saanichton Fair was a final destination for the day. What a great exhibition and food. Ah, the food! A classic example is said to have occurred here at Ardrossan! As any student of Scottish history will know, the death of Alexander III in 1286 resulted in a period of great upheaval in Scotland, there being no clear legitimate heir to the throne. Edward I of England took the opportunity to stir the muddy waters, first installing a puppet king, and then invading the country himself and crushing (for a while) all resistance and earning himself the epithet “Hammer of the Scots” in the process. While the great earls scratched their backsides and pondered which side would best suit their own interests (ie which side was ultimately likely to win!), a comparatively unimportant lowland laird, William Wallace of Elderslie (of Ellerslie), appeared on the national scene Wallace, who appears to have been a bit of a hot-head, managed to get himself outlawed. There are a number of different stories about what he did to deserve this, one of which I told before with my photos of Lamington Tower. Either way, he emerged as a capable leader of men prepared to fight the English at a time that capable leaders of men prepared to fight the English were is desperately short supply! Being a minor laird and no noble, he had little manpower of his own and to start with he was obliged to fight a terrorist style war. It was only with continued success that he attracted the grudging support of his betters – and more importantly, the men they could command. In time he was to lead the national army, but while he was still at the terrorist stage of his career, he came one night to Ardrossan Castle – which had been garrisoned by the English since 1292. Like all successful terrorists, Wallace was an excellent strategist. Even the great battle he lost, at Falkirk, was lost due to the defection of others rather than by his own poor strategy (although he would have been wiser not to have fought at all). His capture of Ardrossan was by a clever ruse or strategem. Legend has it that one night in 1296, Wallace and his men set fire to a nearby building in the town outside the castle. The English garrison came out a few at a time, to find out what was going on, and were promptly dragged into the shadows by Wallace and his men, where their throats were cut! The remaining garrison being severely depleted by this ploy, were eventually overcome, perhaps by Wallace’s men posing as the returning English rubber-neckers. The entire garrison having been put to the sword, the bodies of the dead “and those still living” were then thrown into the vaults below the gatehouse tower. Such foodstuffs and supplies as the Scots could not carry away were thrown down on top of the bodies and left there to rot. The castle was then partly dismantled. The vault in which the bodies and foodstuffs were dumped (the entrance to which can be seen over there to the right), has ever since been known as Wallace’s Larder. During excavation work in 1829, a ring engraved with the letter ‘W’ was discovered at the site, which it is claimed might have belonged to Wallace. But before Gromit could formally protest, both he and Wallace were strapped into the machine wearing equally ridiculous helmets. “Alright Gromit!” Wallace shouted over the now roaring engines, “Off we go to never before explored dimensions…!” The device lifted and hovered forward into a newly created portal. Soon, after a bright flash of light, they were in a world between dimensions. “We did it, Gromit!” Wallace shouted and shook his partner’s shoulder. He stopped the machine and got out, removing his helmet. “What’s the use of being in another realm if we don’t stop to see the sights?” Gromit sighed and followed Wallace. He stopped short and scratched his scalp as he looked around. The “World Between Dimensions” really just looked like a giant bookstore. And behind him was a huge book with both he and Wallace on it. It had the words “Wallace and Gromit: A Novelization” on the top. As Gromit panicked and tried to pull on his master’s arm to show him, another book not far away shook and two figures slid out. One, a green nude man with an unsightly bump. The other, an orange horse. “Well Gumby, we took care of the Blockheads that time!” The horse said. “You can say that again, Pokey ol’ pal,” the green one, supposedly Gumby, said back, “Let’s go home and see if we can get Mother to give us some milk and crackers.” Before Gromit could convince him otherwise, Wallace spoke up, “Well would you look at that! Inter-dimensional beings!” He grabbed a net from the back of the transport, “I don’t suppose they would mind coming along for scientific purposes. Gromit panicked and pulled at Wallace’s shirt, attempting to stop him. He only managed to get dragged behind him. As a net fell over Pokey’s head, Gumby turned and saw the odd looking man and his anthropomorphic dog. Confused, Gumby spoke up, “What seems to be the problem, Friend?” “Yeah, what gives?” Interjected Pokey. “My name is Wallace and this is my dog Gromit,” Gromit covered his eyes and turned away, “We’ll be taking you back to our dimension for studying.” Gumby looked cross, “Not likely. We’re heading home.” He removed the net from Pokey’s head and tossed it. The two of them inched closer, ready to take them down. It commemorates Sir William Wallace, the 13th century Scottish hero. The tower was constructed following a fundraising campaign which accompanied a resurgence of Scottish national identity in the 19th century. In addition to public subscription, it was partially funded by contributions from a number of foreign donors, including Italian national leader Giuseppe Garibaldi. Completed in 1869 to the designs of architect John Thomas Rochead at a cost of £18,000[2], the monument is a 220 foot sandstone tower, built in the Victorian Gothic style. It stands on the Abbey Craig, a volcanic crag above Cambuskenneth Abbey, from which Wallace was said to have watched the gathering of the army of English king Edward I, just before the Battle of Stirling Bridge. The monument is open to the general public. Visitors climb the 246 step spiral staircase to the viewing gallery inside the monument's crown, which provides expansive views of the Ochil Hills and the Forth Valley. Lee is the very petite blond in the front row, just right of center. That handsome young man on the far left side of the top step is me. I must say that I look dashing in a bow tie! Janie Lee Wallace, or Lee was I knew her, is the daughter of George and Lurleen Wallace, both of whom served terms as Governor of Alabama. Before I get to the details, please allow me to digress. Have you ever felt like Forrest Gump, continually running at the periphery of historical events? I have. No, this isn’t the “life is like a box of chocolates” part of Forrest’s life, it’s more like the Forrest who visits the Whitehouse and has to pee, or the Forrest who gets mixed up with desegregation in the South. In my case, the parallels to seeing President John F. Kennedy and Governor George Wallace were real. During the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, I lived in Homestead, Florida, ground zero for both targeting of Soviet nuclear missiles and staging of US military troops for a potential invasion of Cuba. Tens of thousands of US troops were brought into Homestead Air Force Base, some camping at the playground across the street from my house. President John F. Kennedy visited the base during the crises, even making eye contact with my mother as we stood lining the street where his motorcade passed. That was just 13 short months before his assassination in a similar motorcade. Then there was our move to Montgomery, Alabama in 1966-1967 during the heart of the desegregation and civil rights eras. There I attended kindergarten with the daughter of Governor George Wallace who was also known for his US Presidential bids and pro-segregation stance (which he later recanted). Actually, at the time of the photo in this post (April 1967), George’s wife Lurleen was the Governor of Alabama, not George. Alabama had a limit of one term for the governor’s office at the time, so Lurleen ran (and won) as a proxy for George (at least that's what some historians say). While we were in Montgomery, my folks put me into the St. James School to attend kindergarten. Coincidently, Lee Wallace was in the same class. When April came around, the entire class was invited to Lee’s birthday party at the Governor’s Mansion. As it turns out, my birthday fell shortly after Lee’s. And, since we received an invitation to Lee’s party a week or so before the event, I asked my mother and father if I could invite Lee to MY party. Mom and dad said, “Sure”, sent off the invitation to the Wallace’s and told me not to get my hopes up. The day of my birthday, a car pulls up to the house, and out jumps Lee Wallace accompanied by a nanny and security agent. My folks just about fell over in shock! I’ll end my “Forrest Gump” chronicles here (for now), but suffice it to say that my family and I continued to be at the cusp of historical events through Viet Nam, the Cold War and beyond. We’re not famous. We’re not taking credit and we’re not taking blame. We were just there, as were you.
