Expressionist painter Stephen B Whatley photographed yesterday in London, near his 2011 oil painting, "6th Avenue, NYC"; reflecting his love of the USA.

Stephen B Whatley was born in London in 1965 and studied at the Ipswich School of Art (1981-1983) and Norwich School of Art (1983-1986; qualifying with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art - Painting) and the University of London, Institute of Education (1986-1987;qualifying with a PGCE in Art & design) From 1990 -2000, alongside his profession as artist, he taught part-time as Lecturer of Portraiture at Kensington & Chelsea College, London.

The artist’s Expressionist oil paintings are in numerous private collections in Denmark, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, U.S.A. & Wales; and in public collections, including the BBC, Historic Royal Palaces, the London Transport Museum, the Royal Collection, Taylor Woodrow Property Company Ltd, The Pool of London Partnership & the Carrolton School of The Sacred Heart, Miami, USA.

The subjects of Stephen B Whatley range from landscapes and cityscapes ( most recently inspired by his 2010 visit to New York )- often painted on location; portraits that he often paints from life in a single sitting, Still-Life works & iconic Catholic tribute paintings.

Since 1988, Stephen B Whatley’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions including exhibitions at London's National Theatre & Westminster Cathedral; and in group exhibitions - including the ICA & London's International Fine Art & Antiques Fair at Olympia.

The work of Stephen B Whatley has been the subject of features in The Guardian, Guardian Weekend magazine, HELLO! magazine, MAJESTY magazine, Metro London, The New York Times, The Sunday Express, The Daily Telegraph, The London Times newspaper, TIME magazine & USA TODAY; and major Catholic publications.

Stephen B Whatley’s major commissions include two paintings of Buckingham Palace both painted on location, to promote the Summer Opening of the Palace in 1999 & 2000, via London Underground posters: an exterior view of the Palace for the Royal Collection (which hangs today in Her Majesty‘s London residence, Buckingham Palace); and a painting of the Grand Staircase - now owned by the London Transport Museum.

In 2000, the artist was commissioned to paint a vibrant series of 30 paintings for Her Majesty’s Tower of London - many painted on location in and around the Tower. Since 2001, the entire series of works are permanently reproduced through the public walkway that leads to the Tower of London.

In 2004, Stephen was presented to HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, at the Tower of London, in recognition of his work.

In 2006 Stephen B Whatley was listed in David Buckman’s dictionary Artists in Britain Since 1945.

In 2008 Stephen’s portrait of Barack Obama was selected, by editors of TIME as one of the most powerful portraits - from over 100,000 images on Flickr - & published in TIME magazine's 'Person of The Year' issue 2008/2009. The portrait is now in the private collection of an American property developer living in London. In 2009, Stephen’s Royal commissions were the subject of a 5-page feature in the January issue of MAJESTY magazine; and in 2011 his tribute to “William & Kate” was published in HELLO!

His portrait tribute of Elizabeth Taylor caught the attention of CNN, which featured it in their posthumous tributes in 2011. In 2012, Whatley's Diamond Jubilee tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II was exhibited at the Olympia International Fine Art & Antiques Fair, London. In 2013 Stephen donated his tribute painting of ‘Fred Flintstone’ which was auctioned and raised funds for the Joss Searchlight Children’s Cancer Support Charity, at a special London charity art auction hosted by Christies auctioneer Tom Best.

Eilean Bàn
From the website:
Situated between Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye and Kyle of Lochalsh on mainland Scotland, Eilean Bàn ('White Island') is a six-acre nature haven nestling below the Skye road bridge that spans the island. Originally home just to the lighthouse keepers and their families, it later became the residence of the author and naturalist, Gavin Maxwell.

Although internationally known for its association with Maxwell and with otters, Eilean Bàn supports a wealth of wildlife and natural heritage of both local and national importance. Nature trails (suitable for wheelchair users) wind around the island leading to different points of interest, including the award winning wildlife hide, a viewing platform and a sensory garden.

Guided visits to the island, including the Maxwell museum (a reconstruction of his 40ft living room with original artifacts, recreated by Virginia Mckenna) and Teko the otter's memorial stone, are booked through the Bright Water Visitor Centre in Kyleakin.

To savour the unique experience of staying on the island, exclusive self-catering accommodation is available.

Russian postcard by Izdanije Byuro Propogandy Sovietskogo Kinoiskusstva, no. 4, 1973. This postcard was printed in an edition of 40.000 cards. Retail price: 8 Kop.

Handsome leading man Oleg Vidov (1943) was a sex symbol of his generation in the former Soviet Union. Since 1961 he starred in some 50 films, and many are still played on Russian television today.

Oleg Borisovich Vidov was born in Filimonki, a suburb of Moscow, ussr (NOW Russia) in 1943. His parents were Varvara Vidova, a teacher, and Boris Nikolaievich Garnevich, an economist. As a child he lived with his mother, who worked for the Soviet government in the field of education in Mongolia and East Germany. When his mother was sent to China on assignment, he went to live with his aunt Anuta in Kazakhstan. Eventually he moved with his mother and aunt to Moscow. At 18, competing against hundreds of would-be actors, he was accepted to the acting department of the state film school VGIK. In 1961, he made his film debut with a bit part in the drama Друг мой, Колька!../Drug moy, Kolka!../My friend Kolka! (1961, Aleksandr Mitta, Aleksei Saltykov). Eleanor Mannikka at AllMovie: “This was an unusual comedy for its day in the USSR. Put together by two graduate students in film, the story tweaks the establishment with some fairly sharp barbs. At the receiving end of the satire is the rigid, party-line, slogan-spouting school system and its load of propaganda.” In 1964, he played a bear-turned-man who falls in love with a princess in Обыкновенное чудо/Obyknovennoye chudo/An Ordinary Miracle (1964 Erast Garin). This wonderful fairy love story was partly filmed in the Vorontsov Palace. Next, Vidov starred in Метель/Metel//The Blizzard (1964,Vladimir Basov), based on a story by Alexander Pushkin. He played another prince charming in the fairy tale Сказка о царе Салтане/Skazka o tsare Saltane/The Tale of Tsar Saltan (1967, Aleksandr Ptushko) with Larisa Golubkina. In 1968, he went to Yugoslavia for the romance /Ima ljubavi, nema ljubavi/ (1968, Nikola Rajic) with Olivera Katerina, and the war drama Uzrok smrti ne pominjati/ Do Not Mention the Cause of Death (1968, Jovan Zivanovic) starring Bekim Fehmiu. He also appeared in the Yugoslavian production Битка на Неретви/Bitka na Neretvi/Battle of Neretva (1969, Veljko Bulajić) based on the true events of World War II. The Battle of the Neretva was due to a strategic plan for a combined Axis powers attack in 1943 against the Yugoslav Partisans. The plan was also known as the Fourth Enemy Offensive and occurred in the area of the Neretva river in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Battle of Neretva is the most expensive film made in the SFR Yugoslavia. It was first of the huge state-sponsored World War II film productions and had a staggering budget (anywhere between $4.5 million and $12 million) approved personally by Yugoslav president Josip Tito. In the cast were global stars like Sergei Bondarchuk (who had just won an Oscar for War and Peace), Yul Brynner, Franco Nero, Orson Welles, Hardy Krüger and Sylva Koscina. Battle of Neretva was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but did not win. Vidov was then cast for another historical epic Ватерлоо/Waterloo (1970), directed by Sergei Bondarchuk and produced by Dino De Laurentiis. The cast included Rod Steiger (as Napoleon Bonaparte), Christopher Plummer (as the Duke of Wellington), Orson Welles (Louis XVIII of France), Jack Hawkins, and Virginia McKenna. Waterloo depicts the story of the preliminary events and the Battle of Waterloo, and is famous for its lavish battle scenes.

In Cuba Oleg Vidov plated a poor Irish cowboy in the western Всадник без головы /Vsadnik bez golovy/The Headless Horseman (1972, Vladimir Vaynshtok), with Lyudmila Saveleva. The film was based on a novel by the 19th-century Irish-American adventure writer ‘Captain’ Thomas Mayne Reid, whose works were much read in the Eastern Bloc. Cuban actors played the Hispanic characters and the black slaves; Soviet actors the Caucasians and Native Americans. Vidov appeared in another communist western, the DEFA production Tecumseh (1972, Hans Kratzert) featuring Gojko Mitic. For the animation film Maugli/Adventures of Mowgli (1973, Roman Davydov), he dubbed one the characters. The film, based on the book by Rudyard Kipling, was produced by Soviet animation studio Soyuzmultfilm. Other films in which he appeared were the Yugoslavian production Jad/Misery (1975, Kiril Cenevski), and the crime film Крик тишины/Krik tishiny/Scream of Silence (1983, Arya Dashiyev). In 1985, Oleg Vidov emigrated to the U.S. (using his half-Jewish origin) and began acting in films and television there, without success. He married producer Joan Borsten and appeared in her production Red Heat (1988, Walter Hill) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a taciturn law-enforcement officer from Russia. Vidov also helped Schwarzenegger to shape the role. The following year he had a part in the erotic drama Wild Orchid (1990, Zalman King) starring Mickey Rourke. In 1992, the Vidovs obtained the international distribution rights to the award-winning Soyuzmultfilm Studio animation library. Their firm FBJ (Films By Jove) helped popularize Russian animation around the world. Together they produced numerous series based on animation they digitally restored from the Soyuzmultfilm library including Animated Classic Showcase, Mikhail Baryshnikov's Stories from My Childhood, Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, Masters of Russian Animation, The Adventures of Cheburashka and Friends, and Animated Soviet Propaganda. Incidentally Vidov appeared in Hollywood productions. The most interesting was the political thriller Thirteen Days (2000, Roger Donaldson) about the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Opposite Kevin Costner, Vidov played a supporting role as the Soviet Ambassador to the United Nations. In 2007 Vidov and his wife sold the library to a Russian oligarch. Today, Oleg Vidov is Chairman of the Board at Malibu Beach Recovery Center, a drug treatment facility in Malibu, California. Vidov and his wife Joan Borsten-Vidov, who is the CEO, purchased it from Dr. Yakov Marshak (the facility was previously known as the Marshak Clinic). The Malibu Beach Recovery Center has been featured on television shows such as A&E's Intervention and Oprah.

British stage and screen actress Virginia McKenna (1931) is also known as a wildlife campaigner. During her long and successful career she won several awards, including the British Academy Award for Best Actress for A Town Like Alice (1956). Her most popular role has been in Born Free (1966) opposite her husband Bill Travers.

Virginia Anne McKenna was born in London, Great Britain in 1931. After spending five years of her childhood in South Africa to escape the Blitz, she returned to England. She enrolled at the Central School of Drama but left after two years when offered six months in Repertory at Dundee. She also worked on stage in London's West End theatres. In 1952, she made her film debut in the romantic comedy Father's Doing Fine (1952, Henry Cass) starring Richard Attenborough. The following year she gave a sensitive performanceas the wren in the war drama The Cruel Sea (1953) with Jack Hawkins and Denholm Elliott. It is a portrayal of the war between the Royal Navy and Germany's U-boats from the viewpoint of the British naval officers and seamen who served in escort vessels during World War II. The following year Elliott and McKenna married nu they divorced that same year. She continued two work for both the stage and the cinema. In 1954–1955 she was a member of the Old Vic theatre company, playing parts including Rosaline in Love’s Labours Lost. In 1956, McKenna won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film, A Town Like Alice (1956, Jack Lee) opposite Peter Finch. In 1957 she married actor Bill Travers with whom she had four children and to whom she was married until his death in 1994. McKenna was nominated for the Best Actress BAFTA again for her role as a Anglo-French spy in Carve Her Name with Pride (1958, Lewis Gilbert). Set during World War II, the film is based on the true story of the heroism of Special Operations Executive agent Violette Szabo. Bruce Eder at AllMovie: “it is really an actor's movie, in this case carried almost entirely by Virginia McKenna with some help from Jack Warner and Paul Scofield. Given the tragic nature of the outcome, it's difficult for the movie to ignore a certain dourness in tone, but within those limits, the film is an engaging character study by the actress, who brings some of the complexities to Szabo's situation - working on behalf of the government, and unable to tell anyone, including her own family - to vivid life. The flat, black-and-white film gives some of the scenes the appearance of documentary-style verisimilitude.”

With husband Bill Travers, Virginia McKenna co-starred in the existentialist thriller Two Living, One Dead (1961, Anthony Asquith). It is a remake of the Norwegian film To levende og en død (1937, Gyda Christensen, Tancred Ibsen), which in turn was adapted from the 1931 novel of the same name by author Sigurd Christiansen. The Scandinavian small-town setting of the earlier film was kept but the action was moved to Sweden, and Two Living, One Dead was shot on location and in a studio in Stockholm County. She took a break from her film career in the early 1960’s to raise her children. McKenna is best remembered for her role as Joy Adamson in the true-life film Born Free (1966, James Hill) for which she received a nomination for a Golden Globe. Travers portrayed conservationist George Adamson. The real-life couple raised Elsa the Lioness, an orphaned lion cub, to adulthood, and released her into the wilderness of Kenya. Don Kaye at AllMovie: “The film, based on Joy Adamson's book, is poignant and emotional without ever becoming banal or overly sentimental. The title song and film score both won Academy Awards.” The result was seen by almost as many millions who had loved the book. The experience led McKenna and Travers to become active supporters for wild animal rights and the protection of their natural habitat. McKenna also appeared with Travers in An Elephant Called Slowly (1970, James Hill), a travelogue of what it was like years ago in Kenya, Africa. The film features her close friend conservationist George Adamson and also elephants Eleanor and young Pole Pole. The subsequent premature death of Pole Pole in London Zoo was to lead McKenna and her husband to launch the Zoo Check Campaign in 1984 and to establish the Born Free Foundation in 1991.

Virginia McKenna also appeared in other film genres. She was one of the stars in the international cast of the historical epic Waterloo (1970, Sergei Bondarchuk) starring Rod Steiger as Napoleon. On television she was seen in the TV-film The Admirable Crichton (1968, George Schaefer) by J.M. Barrie, the Mini-Series The Edwardians (1972, John Howard Davies) and as the wife of Winston Churchill (Richard Burton) in the biographical drama The Gathering Storm (1974, Herbert Wise), about Churchill's life in the years just prior to, and at the start of, World War II. In 1975 Virginia McKenna released an album of twelve songs called Two Faces of Love which included two of her own compositions and a sung version of the poem The Love That I Have from the film Carve Her Name with Pride. On the stage, she won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a British musical for her performance in 1979 opposite Yul Brynner in The King and I. Over the years she appeared in more films but also was very active with television roles in Mini-Series like The Camomile Lawn (1992, Peter Hall) with Claire Bloom. She guest starred in episodes of popular series like Lovejoy (1992, Baz Taylor), Ruth Rendell Mysteries (1992, Herbert Wise) and Kavanagh QC (1999, David Thacker). On stage she continues to make occasional appearances. Her experiences while filming Born Wild inspired her to write two volumes of memoirs. McKenna has also been responsible for helping create and furnish the Gavin Maxwell museum on Eilean Bàn, the last island home of Maxwell, an author and naturalist, most famous for his book Ring of Bright Water, on which the film of the same name was based. Eilean Bàn (Scottish Gaelic meaning White Island) is a six acre island[5] off the coast of mainland Scotland, between Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye, in Highland. The island supports a column of the Skye Bridge, which crosses the mouth of Loch Alsh from the mainland to Skye.

Eilean Bàn is owned by the Scottish Ministers, but since 1998 has been managed by the Eilean Ban Trust as a wildlife sanctuary. The trust was set up by the local community councils in collaboration with actress Virginia McKenna's Born Free Foundation to preserve local wildlife.[6] A thriving otter population was the inspiration for author Gavin Maxwell (1914–69) who lived there. Eilean Bàn was also home to John Lister-Kaye, who wrote his book The White Island[7] about his time there, working for Maxwell.

Kyleakin Lighthouse is situated at the south-western end of Eilean Bàn. It was built by David and Thomas Stevenson in 1857, and is linked to a pair of keepers' houses. The lighthouse was automated and converted to use acetylene gas in 1960. Following the start of construction of the Skye Bridge, the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1993. It is a Category B listed building.[8]

Ms Royle- star of television, theatre and film -sat with great grace as she had her portrait painted at her home, in the single sitting that the artist requires. Stephen was greatly moved by the peace she exhuded throughout; capturing her iconic beauty, framed by her naturally long tresses of flaxen hair.

Carol Royle is but one of many actors to have had their portraits painted by Whatley; his other sitters including Dame Judi Dench, Frances Barber,Virginia McKenna, Sian Phillips, Julie Walters Sir Ian McKellen & Alec McCowen.

BORN FREE FOUNDATION

Photograph of Virginia McKenna taken by Bill Travers

The photo is of Virginia McKenna and ‘Girl’, a 12 month old lioness who was the main animal actor in the film Born Free. After filming was complete Girl was subsequently returned to the wild by George Adamson. She features in Bill Travers’ documentary The Lions Are Free. This photo was taken when Virginia and Girl were out on the plains to the north west of Mount Kenya in the early morning. It was part of the ‘getting to know you’ process.

The Born Free Foundation is a dynamic international wildlife charity, devoted to compassionate conservation and animal welfare. The image captures the extraordinary relationship between an individual human being and an animal. It was a relationship that portrayed the love they held for each other, which was at the core of Born Free and which underpins so much of what Born Free Foundation stands for today.

Virginia McKenna OBE (born 7 June 1931, London) is a British stage and screen actress, author and wildlife campaigner.
In 1956, McKenna won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film, A Town Like Alice and two years later was nominated for Best Actress again for her role as the World War II SOE agent Violette Szabo, in 1958's Carve Her Name with Pride.
However, McKenna is best remembered for her 1966 role as Joy Adamson in the true-life film Born Free for which she received a nomination for a Golden Globe. Bill Travers, her real life husband, co-starred with her, portraying conservationist George Adamson, and the experience led them to become active supporters for wild animal rights and the protection of their natural habitat. McKenna appeared in An Elephant Called Slowly, a travelogue of what it was like years ago in Kenya, Africa. The film features her close friend conservationist George Adamson and also elephants Eleanor (raised by conservationst Daphne Sheldrick) and young Pole Pole. The death of Pole Pole in a zoo was to lead to Virginia and Bill founding the organization Zoo Check. This led to McKenna and her husband becoming involved in the Zoo Check Campaign in 1984 and to their establishing the "Born Free Foundation" in 1991.
On the stage, in 1979 she won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a British musical for her performance opposite Yul Brynner in The King and I. Over the years she appeared in more motion pictures but also was very active with television roles and on stage where she continues to make occasional appearances.

From their website.....
"Bank Ground Farm is a Grade II listed Farmhouse that has been dated back to the 15th Century. Set on the Eastern shores of Coniston water it commands uninterrupted views over the Lake to Coniston Village and its magnificent backdrop of Lake District fells the focal point of which is the 2635ft summit of Coniston Old Man.

The farmhouse building has been providing bed and breakfast accommodation for over 50 years. This Grade II listed 15th Century building with original low ceilings, exposed oak beams, and open log fires creates a welcoming atmosphere throughout the year.

We remain a working farm of some 60+ acres rearing both cattle and sheep. The lambs around Easter time are a favourite with both children and adults alike.

The provision of self-catering holiday cottage accommodation started when some of the original farm buildings were converted in the late 1980's. Each cottage has been carefully restored retaining many original features such as exposed oak beams. All the cottages are comfortable and spacious, each one with its own individual charm.

Our traditional Lake District farm is steeped in literary history, Bank Ground Farm is perhaps best known as “Holly Howe” the name given to it by Arthur Ransome when it acted as a part inspirational source for his famous children’s story Swallows & Amazons, in which the house and its lakeside setting become the fictional home, Holly Howe, of the Walker children. Their adventures set on, in and around Bank Ground Farm and Coniston Water have become well loved the world over. The farm was extensively used in the 1974 film version of Swallows and Amazons starring Virginia McKenna and Donald Fraser.

Arthur Ransome was a prolific writer of children's books. Born in Leeds in 1884, it was his father, a nature-loving history professor, who inspired his love of the outdoors and nurtured a passion for fishing. As a child he enjoyed active, outdoor holidays: sailing, camping and exploring the countryside. He used many of these holiday settings for his children's stories, notably the much loved Swallows and Amazons, a book that sits comfortably in the category of "timeless classic" and remains one of his most popular titles for young people.

It is the wholesome story of four young children, John, Susan, Titty and Roger, who set out in their boat (the Swallow of the title) to an island of adventure. All seems well until they encounter their enemy. At first they are angry at the invasion of their peaceful haven by these Amazon pirates, Nancy and Peggy, who claim ownership of the land. But in time a truce is called and the Swallows and Amazons become firm friends. Camping under open skies, swimming in clear water, fishing, exploring and making discoveries is the stuff of dreams which serves to make this so charming a tale. The author manages to capture the innocence of a time when all this was real and possible. Swallows and Amazons will transport children to a fantastical place where they can play safely and roam freely, without an adult in sight.

This spirit, hopefully you will agree, still remains today which is what makes Bank Ground Farm such an idyllic place to stay and keeps people coming back year after year."

Scottish actress Maureen Swanson (1932) was a pretty, elegant, brunette leading lady in British films of the 1950’s. After her marriage to the count of Dudley she retired.

Maureen Swanson was born in 1932, in Glasgow, Scotland. Her father was a businessman. When her parents immigrated to South Africa, she decided to stay behind in Great Britain. She was educated at schools and convents in Scotland, before she went to Paris to study ballet. In 1951 she had the lead in the Drury Lane production of Carousel. She made her film debut in John Huston’s drama Moulin Rouge (1952) as one of the women around Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (José Ferrer). In 1952 there was a much-publicized kiss from Errol Flynn at the London airport and there was talk of Flynn giving her a contract, but she said no. She appeared in memorable films like The Valley of Song (1953, Gilbert Gunn), the adventure film Knights of the Round Table (1953, Richard Thorpe) starring Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner, and the British Film-Noir Third Party Risk (1954, Daniel Birt) opposite Lloyd Bridges. In 1955 she made her tv debut in Great Britain, even though she had already acted and danced in a series of six films made for American television.

In 1956 Maureen Swanson appeared in four films. She starred opposite Norman Wisdom in the comedy Up in the World (1956, John Paddy Carstairs). She played a supporting part in the award winning war drama A Town Like Alice (1956, Jack Lee) with Peter Finch and Virginia McKenna. She had another secondary role in Jacqueline (1956, Roy Ward Baker). And in The Spanish Gardener (1956, Philip Leacock) she appeared opposite Dirk Bogarde. That year she was introduced to the Queen at the Royal Film Performance of The Battle at the River Plate at the Empire Theatre, London. Along with her are Marilyn Monroe, Victor Mature, Anthony Quayle, and others. The following year she received good reviews for her role in the in Australia situated adventure film Robbery Under Arms (1957) starring Peter Finch, but it was to be her last feature film. In 1961 Maureen Swanson married William Ward, styled Viscount Ednam, who in 1969 became the 4th Earl of Dudley. They have six children, including documentary filmmaker Leander Ward (1971). Actress Rachel Ward is their niece.

Posting this as a tribute to one of my all time favourite people.
and as a lovely exscuse, if one were needed, to post one of my favourite poems ...
You can hear this poem being read by Virginna McKenna ... here

The Life That I Have.

The life that I have
Is all that I have
And the life that I have
Is yours

The love that I have
Of the life that I have
Is yours and yours and yours

A sleep I shall have
A rest I shall have
Yet death will be but a pause

For the peace of my years
In the long green grass
Will be yours and yours
and yours.

40 years or so after I stood in the exactly the same spot as an overawed schoolboy on a flight-deck visit, somewhere over the Sahara.
I since discovered that this aircraft was the one featured in the film "Born Free", with Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers as Joy and George Adamson, arriving back in Nairobi following their leave in the UK. Amusing to see in a freeze-frame that the EAA steps have been converted to British United ones by the application of large banners that completely covered the sides. Except the EAA logo at the top.
