Flickr Ontario Dogwood
Tags: dogwood   niagaraonthelake   frhwo   2013lakehuron
This dogwood caught my attention at one of the first stops I made during a 2013-Spring drive around Lake Huron.

background from wikipedia...

The name "dog-tree" entered the English vocabulary by 1548, and had been further transformed to "dogwood" by 1614. Once the name dogwood was affixed to this kind of tree, it soon acquired a secondary name as the Hound's Tree, while the fruits came to be known as dogberries or houndberries (the latter a name also for the berries of black nightshade, alluding to Hecate's hounds). Another theory advances the view that "dogwood" was derived from the Old English dagwood, from the use of the slender stems of its very hard wood for making "dags" (daggers, skewers, and arrows). Another, earlier name of the dogwood in English is the whipple-tree. Geoffrey Chaucer uses "whippletree" in The Canterbury Tales ("The Knight's Tale", verse 2065) to refer to the dogwood. A whippletree is an element of the traction of a horse-drawn cart, linking the drawpole of the cart to the harnesses of the horses in file; these items still bear the name of the tree from which they are commonly carved.

This is a photo of a photo being sold at a local arts festival. I hope the person who took the original photo finds this and it pisses them off. They were a complete ass to me for no reason and treated me like an idiot for asking about their process. If someone shows respect for your art and asks a simple question, be thankful that they have enjoyed your vision enough to want to ask a question or that they wanted to actually talk to you at all. Don't be a dick, don't look down on someone because of the camera they use("I use a NIkon D4, not a small camera like that"), don't act like someone is lesser than you because of the clothes they wear. As far as I could tell, they weren't selling many prints and maybe it's because they didn't want to talk to people looking at their work. The only information I got was that they take their photos with a Nikon D4 at long range(200mm+) and at least a shutter speed of 1000, everything else is photoshop, because "there's no reason to do anything in camera these days." I hope they fail in life.

Instead of remaining on Interstate I-84, between Wendell and Mountain Home, Idaho - - my "detour diversion" took me north up highway 46 across the Camas Prairie, and then west on highway 20 through "downtown" Corral, Idaho. It had cost me just 40 miles of extra driving....but what a quality experience those extra 40 miles of "two lane highway" travel, provided.

Then there was the one hour "detour to the detour", when I stopped on impulse to explore the lower reaches of Black Canyon in the Little City of Rocks. That side trip, a short ways down a dirt road and then a "free form" hike up a side canyon and down the main canyon, hadn't added much distance to my diversion but it did tack on another hour to my trip home. Again well worth it.

I had told a Flickr friend about my desire to stop "one day" by the old school house at Corral, Idaho. I had seen a photo of it on Flickr and it seemed like an interesting place to visit. That friend made a trip over and not only took some photos of the school, but met a farmer, who had lived in the area all his life. In fact, his brother and sister had attended the Corral, Idaho school. The farmer knew the entire history of the town and the school.

I made a point of stopping by the farmer's house in Corral (my Flickr friend provided me with his name), and I was welcomed into his house (as my Flickr friend had been), to see some of the wonderful historic photographs he had of dry land farming (alfalfa) in the area of Corral, Idaho. Moments like this make a road trip.

The farmer showed me photos of his grandfather working the land with teams of horses and even a photograph of the old school, when the small "teacher's living quarters" were located right behind the school. The school house itself looks much the same as it did "back then" with the distinctive "full wall "X" forming boards across one end of it.

I asked the farmer if I could take a few photos of him, his farm house, and the old photographs. He let me. I told them I would use the photos for "personal use" and though he probably isn't the kind of man, who would be upset if he found out that I had posted photos of him and the inside of his farmhouse on my Flickr site, I'm not going to. I want to keep the promise I made him BEFORE I took the photos. I have included a photo of one page of his old photo album, and I don't think that constitutes a breach of trust.

I was made to feel so welcome at the home of this Corral, Idaho oldtimer (like me) farmer, I was hoping there was something I had in my car I could leave for him as a "country" way of saying thanks. In the end I retrieved a 3/4 full can of Costco cashews, which he accepted with a thanks, though he was the kind of kind man, that would accept and say thanks...even if he didn't care for cashews. A nice quality farmer - - like so many of them are.

I ended up visiting in Corral, Idaho longer than I had anticipated, but like the stop at the Gooding's Little City of Rocks, and the short hike there...they were part of what makes a "road trip" such a fun and memorable experience.

So thanks to my good Flickr friend Fred, for "introducing me to the farmer" and to the third or fourth generation "old man alfalfa farmer", who made an out of state "old man road traveler", like me, feel welcome.

A church in Fox, Oregon has some of the same feel and appeal:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I completed my wandering about hike in Black Canyon and exited the canyon via the breach in the old rock faced earthen dam. I then retraced my route on the dirt road back to Idaho highway 46 and turned north toward the snow clad Sawtooth Mountains.
My goal all along with this "detour" in route home, had been to simply drive by an old schoolhouse (just for the fun of it), snap a couple photos, and then return to the main (interstate) route back to my home in Eastern Washington.
BUT, when you travel back roads you need to expect and enjoy the unexpected places you see and bump into. Such was the case with this "detour" down a dirt road to hike Black Canyon in the Little City of Rocks. A place I hadn't even heard of. So a detour (to the canyon) from a detour (to the Corral schoolhouse).
Idaho highway 46 as it drops down toward the intersection with highway 20 provides you with a knock your socks off view of the Sawtooths and White Clouds Mountains up north. Highway 20 is an interesting drive as well, not only the small ranch and farm communities but the rich history of those who traveled to Oregon in the early days..by foot..by horse...and later by ox drawn wagons.
It pays to get out of the fast lane and off the interstate from time to time. Shunpikers find their rewards. I did.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had my NUVI navigator set for "home" (In Eastern Washington), when I left SLC at 4 am to avoid city interstate traffic and just because I love the early morning, especially when traveling.

The NUVI lady gave me and ETA of early afternoon for my arrival home (IF I stayed on the interstate and kept driving right at the speed limit).

The sun came out. I thought "What a waste to zip straight home and just hang on to the steering wheel for hour after freeway mile". So I pulled out my road atlas and decided, with the good weather I would take a back highway detour up to see an old schoolhouse that has been on my "to see" list ever since I saw a photo of it on Flickr. It is located just a smidgen north of "downtown" Corral, Idaho on highway 20.

So along highway 46 I sailed north into the sunshine. A nice ice cold can of diet Pepsi and ENYA music wafting through the warm cabin of my very old Toyota RAV4.

Then I saw a "City of the Rocks" on my map and a sign pointing down a dirt road leading in that direction.

I had been to the City of Rocks near Almo, Idaho many times and fell in love with that place, returning to drive it, hike it, and camp in it, several times. And once in awhile when I would mention the City of Rocks IN IDAHO to people, they still would say "Which one?". I didn't get it then but I get it now. There is at least one other one and the one I stopped at on the west side of Idaho highway 46 is another little hidden gem. I'm certain the locals know it well, but I am embarrassed to say I had never heard of it and didn't even know that I would be passing by it on the route I selected to the Corral, Idaho school house.

There went my mid-afternoon arrival home, but I couldn't have been happier. A nice long hike through some interesting basalt rock formations and not one other person around from the time I turned off highway 46 until much later when I turned back onto it. FUN!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The highlights of an eleven day road trip I took between March 9th and March 19th of 2013 were:
* Visiting our kids both on the way from home and on the way back home.
* Traveling, hiking, and camping in the Mojave Desert National Preserve. My first trip into the area and one I enjoyed, especially the back road driving there.
* Tent camping (using one of my small backpacking tents) at White Tank campground in Joshua Tree National Monument. I really enjoyed the rock formations within the park and though I have seen many Joshua Trees, I really appreciated those I saw within the National Park. This was my first visit to this National Park.
* Driving the Eastern Sierras up highway 395, poking around places like the arches and campgrounds of the Alabama Hills. I had planned to stop in Death Valley National Park but the air quality was poor for photography and I have spent time in many of the places I planned to visit. so I skipped Death Valley.
* On a whim, taking a "back road" north of Bishop to cut over to highway 6 across Southern Nevada. I had driven highway 6 many times but the cut over road was new to me and I dearly love driving back roads that I have never before traveled.
* Taking Idaho highway 46 and stumbling across the "Little City of Rocks" there and finding I had the place to myself, so with camera in hand I took off for a most enjoyable hike through those rock formations.
* A planned stop at an old school house near Corral, Idaho. I had seen a photo of this school house on Flickr and wanted to stop and see it for myself. As a lucky strike extra, my Flickr backpacking friend, Sawtoothphoto, visited the school before me and had met a fellow, who's brother and sister had actually attended the school and was a wealth of information about not only the school but the history of the area around the small community of Corral. Fun!
* Great weather on the entire trip. The only rain or snow I hit was just ten miles outside of the town I live in, on the way home. A good time was had by all. Love road trips. OMT
A fun place to shop for small cute things, to watch the young and trendy or simply soak in the atmosphere.
Flickr Day 241 - "The Cameras I Use..."
August 28, 2012 - "The Cameras I Use..."
I'm often asked "How many cameras do you have?". I usually respond with "I don't know!".
The real answer really depends on the details of the question. "How many cameras do I own?" or "How many cameras do I actually use?"
This photo is of the cameras I actually use regularly... and there are 14 of them. This doesn't include the camera on my iPhone (which actually took this photo) or the camera on my iPad which I sometimes use.
In addition to these I own around 6 to 10 "historical cameras" which may or may not work... but regardless, I don't use them at all. They're just part of the collection... decorating the living room.
So here they are... the 14 cameras I actually use. And I'm always "in the process of buying another". Next up will be either a Leica X1 or X2. After that will be the (not yet released) Canon EOS M. After that? I don't know... possibly a Canon EOS 5D Mark III or a Canon 6D (which right now is just a rumored camera). We'll see!
A lot of times showing my astrophotography begs the question, "what did you use?" So I set everything up to answer just that. :D
Mount: ........................ Losmandy GM8
Main Scope: ............. Astro-Tech 90EDT
Main Camera: .......... Modified Canon XTi (400D)
Guiding Scope: ........ Orion ST8
Guiding System: ...... SBIG ST-4
Power:
1 Sun X-tender 53Ah AGM deep-cycle battery
1 generic 18aH AGM deep-cycle battery
- - -
Below are some notes for those interested in one or more pieces of this setup. I'm speaking purely from an amateur astrophotography standpoint. For visual use, this mount would be able to handle a bit more weight and perform much better in a similar setup than I may make it seem. Cameras are much more discerning 'observers' then we humans are.
- - -
The Mount:
. . .
The GM8 is a great mount, but I'm definitely pushing the imaging weight limit of this guy. The stated instrument weight limit from the Losmandy site is 30 lbs. For imaging, the rule is "half the limit to be safe; 2/3 is pushing but doable". That rule is very apparent here. The larger scope is about 13 by itself and combined, the scopes, rings, cameras and adapters weigh about 20-21~22 lbs. It is still very sturdy but doing an accurate balance is tricky unless the axis' are ~perpendicular. Also, a reasonable gust of wind can shake it a bit. But we're talking a GUST, not just a light breeze. I've imaged in light breezes with little problem.
The mount is not computerized ("GOTO") so I have to 'PUSHTO' my targets which can make finding things you can't see, very difficult. While it can't find anything, it does track automatically. Tracking is always on, and is working as soon as you're done pushing to a target. Very 'worry-free'.
As far as tracking accuracy; it does okay. Back before the ST-4 I was manually guiding using an illuminated cross-hair eyepiece. The guide star would be quite still for some few seconds, then it suddenly starts to move to one side, then the other. If asked to graph, it would look like a heartbeat type pattern. This made me learn to drift align to make sure that error didn't also affect the 'up and down' movement of the guide star (DEC drift).
While the worm gear systems are much better than the CG5 I sold, there is still some work that needs to be done to get them adjusted just right. There are numerous websites discussing the motor/gear reduction/worm gear weirdness of Losmandy mounts, so you can find out more there. For this mount, I like to clean and re-lubricate about once every 15 mos, so the first time out with it can be tricky. After maintenance, I like to give worms on both axis' an entire rotation by hand (very long and painful on the fingers) to make sure everything is smooth. When it's cold, the worm and wheel can bind up if you don't leave enough backlash, but I don't really notice this amount when guiding and switching directions. It's still pretty responsive. The ST-4 is able to 'drive' this mount quite efficiently. If you will or do have this mount, consider purchasing the Ovation one-piece worm block. There is too much play with the two individual worm blocks that come standard. If I weren't upgrading soon, I would get these right away.
I like this mount, but because I'm already pushing the weight limit, I had considered upgrading to the bigger G11 and continue my loyalty to the brand. It will hold double the weight so I would be good for any future telescope/camera combination, but in the end I decided to aim for the top and start saving my pennies for an Astro-Physics Mach1GTO. AP states the weight at 45lbs, but AP is notoriously ultra conservative on their limitations (which I'm pretty sure are imaging limits). Physically, it's a bigger mount so I would expect it to handle the same as the G11 with little trouble.
- - -
Main Scope:
. . .
The Astro-Tech 90EDT is a heavy scope. Great optics but heavy and large for it's size. It's often mistaken for a 100mm or 110mm scope. It's bigger brother, the AT111EDT is pretty much the same girth, but longer. I've thought about exchanging it to a more normal 8lb 90mm triplet. or keeping the same weight and getting a larger aperture reflector, but I like the scope and don't think it's worth replacing just yet.
This scope is great really, except for the focuser. I may have gotten a bad sample, but my micro-focus doesn't really work with heavy stuff or with the focus lock on at all. I've noted the focus point so I'm focused after a few test shots and it's not really being used all that much, but still, it should work better. I've also had to loosen the focuser attachment to the scope to get it working. The downside to that is it now moves forward and back just a couple of mm when you change directions. But again, I don't use it so it's not a big problem.
The optics are great. No false color that I can notice and I've imaged and looked at the moon several times with this. You can see from my moon photos that there is color on the moon, but no fringe color around the moon's edge. A bit of field curvature but the Astro-Tech Field Flattener fixed that up perfectly. The images speak for themselves.
The Guide System:
. . .
The Orion ST80 is nice and light. Since it's only a fast doublet, it does have quite a bit of false color, but that doesn't matter for guiding. It's faster than the main scope at f/5 (main scope at f/6.67) so I need to use a Barlow lens to make guiding worth it. The rule is that you want to guide at twice the magnification of your imaging scope. This way the guider sees the movement and fixes it before the camera picks it up.
The ST-4 is awesome. Considering they were made in the early 90s and are still around say a lot. It is a finicky little bastard, but once you get to know it, it can be your best friend. Being the first stand-alone guiding system, you do not need to bring a computer along. Being somewhat a minimalist, I like not having a computer unless absolutely necessary. It's also just one more thing to have to worry about powering or charging in the field.
My biggest problem was finding, focusing and using the right guide star. Because there is no display from the CCD, it's hard to tell what it sees. I removed the flip mirror from the main scope and put it here so that I can use my old guiding eyepiece to help me find and center a good guide star. Adding the end of a Barlow lens to the camera nose-piece increases the magnification but it made it hard to get my illuminated eyepiece far enough inward to reach equal focus. After many attempts at it, I ended up removing about 4mm from the flip mirror ep barrel. They're close enough now that I can use the EP to center. Since the EP is slighly out of focus when the guider is in focus, the star looks like a disc which makes judging appropriate guide star brightness easier to do.
- - -
Miscellaneous Stuff:
. . .
An intervalometer (special timer) allows me to set the number and length of exposures so that I can just "set it and forget it" for a given target. In conjunction with the ST-4, they help me get some sleep or socialize with other astronomers.
The batteries are awesome! I had to learn a lot about batteries to get the right one, but I like the sealed AGM ones because they don't spill, they don't offgas when charging, I don't have to fill with water, etc. They are expensive, but the Sun X-tender is built for military and government solar power installation systems so I know it's going to last. Next on the wish list is a solar panel to charge when not at home. Using both the ST-4 and GM8 on the 18Ah battery gave me about 6 hours of use, and about 5 in winter. Now, I use the 18Ah battery for the mount because it only draws 500mA so it will do fine for a 2 nighter. The ST-4 draws 2 Amps so I use the 53Ah for it. I can go a full weekend and probably up to 4 whole nights with it before it needs charging.
Giles Thompson
"New and Used"
Opening Reception: Sat. Jan 14th 2012 • 7-11pm
show runs through Feb. 5th 2012
Pandemic is very pleased to present a solo exhibition, featuring the work of Brooklyn based artist Giles Thompson.
Inspired and formed from his love for abstract impressionism and other classic painting styles, Thompson's paintings push beyond the boundaries of normal artistic process and brings us into his somewhat warped world, full of juxtaposition and mystique. His spontaneous, seemingly simplistic painting style is as intense as the branded logos he implants into his pieces. He shows us a method stemming from cut and paste, but produced on a much larger scale. Appropriating well known pop iconography as well as other various invasive imagery, he mixes in his raw, unrefined painting style. Spastic lines with gargantuan brush strokes, relentless color formations and seemingly random patterns all come full circle and become clear the more you stare.
Thompson's work is a kind of visual commentary of the effects generated from the presence of the constant visual bombardment of advertisements and logos that are absorbed into our subconscious on a daily basis. His basic manipulation of these images paired with his loose, abnormally chaotic painting style makes the imagery take on new meanings and uncover new questions. Challenging the aesthetic of consumerism and arousing emotion in how we live our day to day lives. Vividly colorful, overflowing with cultural references and also involving the negation of imagery in a style all his own is the soapbox on which Giles' stands. The playfulness in his work is as charming as the intended ambiguity, he plays the roll of visual dictator over what he sees as beauty in this world. He challenges the viewer as he reconfigures the known, infuses the unknown and revels in creating a new presence, a new exposure to an unseen environment.
Giles Thompson, born in 1977, grew up in Oneida New York and received his BFA at the university of Colorado, he currently resides in Brooklyn.
While going through my good friend Joe's (tossmeanote) photosteam, I noticed a picture from a truck race where a girl was waving the green flag signifying the actual start of the race. Among Flickr tags he used, one stood out: "flagfrau"
I did thorough research (I clicked on the word in this tag box...took 2 seconds) and found that nobody has ever used "flagfrau" for any picture on Flickr...and there are 100 trillion pics here.
I decided to make a picture with a "flagfrau" tag, too.
Flickr DX 35mm VS FX 35mm Focal Length
Tags: film   nikon   n80   fx   f8   125iso   cropfactor   1350sec   dxvsfx
I often wondered, "Is the 1.5x crop factor real with "DX" sensors?" I set up a test to find out. Placing my sturdy Manfrotto tripod on our deck, I went about scribbling on half sheets of paper the lens and focal length being used. Here, I used "D" to signify a "DX" lens and the absence of the "D" indicates an "FX" ("full frame" or "film" et cetera) lens. The color images were shot with my Nikon D80 digital (DX sensor camera) using the same settings as on my N80 35mm film camera throughout the test (I forgot to kick the ISO down to 125, so they are a bit overexposed -- however, exposure or image quality was not the intent of this test). The black and white shots are scans from a contact sheet I made in the darkroom (hence the poor quality). So, in color is a DX sensor and black and white a flim (or FX like a D700, D3 (Nikon) or 5D, 1D (Canon)).
Here, the top is shot with my Nikkor 18-200mm DX zoom lens at a 35mm focal length. The bottom was shot with my Nikkor 17-35mm FX lens at 35mm. Notice the darkening of the edges is a bit less severe at 35mm with the DX lens that at 18mm with the DX lens in a different shot posted in this series. I did not do a test to see when the vignetting disappears completely, but I suspect it may be around the 200mm mark or higher.
Tonight was the first time I've really "used" my camera in quite awhile. We went down to First Friday, an artwalk in downtown San Antonio, and just hung out, snapped some shots, checked out the galleries and went out to eat afterwards. After going through a few shots I took, there are really only a couple that I like, and this is my favorite of them. Even after looking at it more, I realize it's a tiny bit blurry, but I do like the grain of the higher ISO I was using.
I need to get out more...I'm so out of practice at this.
Flickr ACL Columbia Terminal Sheet 3
Tags: railroad   southcarolina   trains   columbia   railroads   stations   southernrailway   atlanticcoastline
I was hoping that it showed more detail of the Southern's tracks than it does. If anyone can supply additional information, it would be appreciated.
Update. My notation on the scan that, "Apparently ACL showed only those tracks which they used." I think was a wrong first impression. I now think that the original 1917 map has been updated, and the tracks shown in BLACK are the station tracks AS THEY EXISTED IN THE 1960s. What threw me off was that they did not update the umbrella sheds. But, while drawing in the dotted red lines, it dawned on me that the tracks shown are as I remember them being as a child catching trains and hanging out there in the 1960s.
By 1960, the Assembly Street two-lane overpass had been removed and the street widened to four lanes at ground level. All through station tracks except Tracks 3 and 4 had been removed east of Assembly Street. The shortened portion of Track 5 was retained west of Assembly for use in switching cars to/from trains, while Tracks 6 and 7 became stub-ended at Assembly and were used for storing and servicing cars laying over at Columbia. What remains of Tracks 5, 6, and 7 today have been further shortened and concrete ramps built for unloading MofW equipment and the Circus Train when it comes to town. All umbrella sheds except the one between Tracks 3 and 4 were torn down, as was the part of the surviving one that had formerly extended under the Assembly Street Bridge. A "new" umbrella shed, made out of materials from the dismantled ones, was built between Tracks 3 and 4 on the west side of Assembly Street extending all the way to the Gates Street "crossing" (which never was open as a street through there), and from then on, all trains stopped to the WEST of the Assembly Street crossing, so as not to block either Assembly or Main Streets while in the station. Passengers had to walk or drive down to where the trains would be.
Trains 31 and 32, the Augusta Special, ran through on Track 4. Columbia cars were added to No. 32 and switched out of No. 31, by the "Station Job" switcher, using the truncated Track 5 as a pickup and set off track. (You can see a photo of No. 32's engine, as it always stopped on Track 4 at Assembly Street, here: www.flickr.com/photos/michaeljy/3571226187 ).
Trains 17 and 18, the Columbia-Greenville local, arrived and departed during the night, and presumably also used Track 4, being made up and put away to/from storage tracks 6 and 7 by the Station Switcher.
Trains 27 and 28, the Carolina Special, after its Charleston leg was discontinued in 1962, originated and terminated in Columbia, arriving and departing from Track 3. No. 28 was due to arrive at 4:45 p.m., and would stop on Track 3 short of Assembly Street, and at some point during the night would be wyed (turned) by the Station Job and returned to the same spot, for departure as No. 27 the next day at 11:20 a.m. Meanwhile, No. 31 would have run through around 6 a.m., and with all its switching and No. 27's equipment sitting on Track 3, old Union Station must have looked like quite a busy place again for a half hour or so.
By union agreement, the Station Job Switcher crew went on and off duty at Union Station. In the mid- to late 1960s, the old employee locker and washroom in the basement of the building that is now California Dreaming was shut down, and a small new brick building was built just west of Assembly Street, next to Track 5, to serve as a crew facility. Long after all passenger service ended around 1970, the Station Job continued to "tie up" here, in Track 5. When not switching passenger trains, on first trick (daytime) it switched industries in the Blanding Street-Laurel Street area, and on third trick ("graveyard" shift) it switched industries in the area now known as "The Vista," behind Adluh Flour, and the Freight Depot at 800 Gervais Street.
The Station Job is now, like the passenger trains it once switched, history, but I think its little brick crew room still stands, on Assembly Street near The Sonic Drive-In Restaurant.
This was the basic setup I had in Algarve, Portugal and San Sebastian, Spain to shoot action from the beach : a Canon EOS 1D mark II N body with Damien's Canon EF 600mm f/4 L USM lens that I called with Mo "The Machine Gun" !
Luckly I had a 1DmkII DSLR before so I wasn't lost with the lack of ergonomy of the body ! The AF of the 1DII is really awesome and the screen not too tight on the N version so that was a cool body to use.
I also shot action with the 7D body when the tide was low and the surfer at the outside.
Yeah this lens is just magic, it has travelled all over the world and seen so many things ! Full of stories ! And so sharp and crispy !
Here is my FX (film) lens at 17mm on my DX camera (D80) and my N80 film camera. Notice how the D80 looks like it zoomed in -- it didn't. Same focal lengths. The physics of this is very explainable but not here but a quick search will yield a much simpler explanation that I can provide here. While the 1.5x crop factor is good for getting a 300mm film-equivalent focal length out of a 200mm lens, the gain on the long end is sorely missed on the ultra-wide angle. On a DX camera, my 17mm setting becomes equivalent to about 25mm on my film camera -- or future FX digital :)
In film days, it was said that the human eye sees the world very close to a 50mm focal point (on a 35mm film camera). In a DX format, the crop factor bumps that number down to around a 35mm focal length, as this comparison loosely illustrates.
One of the inherent risks and underlying premises of "safe use" for using potentially harmful products, including asbestos-containing materials, often appears to simply rely on the consumer's degree of compliance with seemingly vague warnings.
This is design and implementation of "Formation Card". Formation card is to record a formation/map/arrangement of index cards. When you think with spreading index cards on the desktop, you may want to keep the formation.
Use "absolute name" to specify the index cards. A start of argument, conclusion are emphasized with single/double underline(s). After you make the Formation Card, you can stack and bundle the cards.
This example is a Formation Card of index cards. You can build a fractal structure as well : that is, a Formation Card of Formation Cards, a Formation Card of Formation Cards of Formation Cards, .... etc.
Flickr Lens testing in Chinatown
I found a "used" Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm f/2.8 pancake on craigslist for a great price and couldn't pass it up. (Thanks, Joel!) As is the norm, a quick trip down the elevator and around the corner into Vancouver's Chinatown was needed to give the new lens a quick run through. And I'm pleased by the results! (Though I will admit that even with the retro-cool Leica metal lens hood attached, the 25mm pancake looks very small and just a bit strange on the front of the E-3... which makes me want an E-420 to go with it too.)
And this could possibly be my last Chinatown lens test for a long time. Not because I don't plan on buying or testing any new lenses, but because the edge of Chinatown will only be home for a few more weeks. We'll be moving across Vancouver's downtown core at the end of November and Chinatown will no longer be an elevator trip away, it'll be a 20-minute walk from home. November 11, 2009.
Guarding the door we have 'Force' - very tough guy, and seems to be looking right at me, well scowling, really! "All right you can pass," he says to the man with his shopping.
His partner on the other flank is 'Wisdom' - I never pay much attention to him ! Always with his head stuck in a book all the time. What could he possibly know?
ACHTUNG: Auf jeden Fall hinten auch zuhalten, sonst blitzt man sich die Reflexion vom Blitz in die eigenen Augen!
Zusätzlich kann man noch den Weißabgleich auf bewölkt stellen, dann wirkt das Blitzlicht weniger kalt (manche Kameras ignorieren leider diese Einstellung beim Blitzen).
IMPORTANT: always cover the backside, too. Otherwise you'll shoot the reflection of the flash right into your own eyes.
In addition, you can set the white balance to cloudy, that makes the flash light appear "warmer" (unfortunately some cameras ignore this setting when using the flash).
Walt Disney Concert Hall:
111 South Grand Avenue
Project search announced: 1987.
Initial design approved: 1988.
"Final" design approved: 1991.
Ground broken for the garage: 1992.
Hall actually built: 1999–2003.
Architect: Frank Gehry / Gehry Partners, LLP / Frank O. Gehry & Associates (“FOG/A”)
Executive Architect: Dan Dworsky / Dworsky Architects (at least initially, off the project by '94)
Project Designer: Michael Maltzan (at least initially, left to start his own firm in '95)
Acoustic Design: Yasuhisa Toyota for Nagata Acoustics, with preliminary work by Minoru Nagata
Project Management: Fred Stegeman for Stegeman/Kastner Inc. (initially until ca. '95, I think)
Client: A seven-member architectural search committee was set up by the Music Center in 1987 and chaired by Richard Koshalek, with Daniel Commins as acoustic advisor. In 1989, the twelve-member Walt Disney Concert Hall Committee was formally established and thereupon headed by Frederick M. Nicholas on a volunteer basis until about 1995. The land was owned by Los Angeles County and the County was represented in negotiations by attorney Richard S. Volpert, at least from 1989 to 1995. The Philharmonic was initially represented by Ernest Fleischmann, managing director, with input from Esa-Pekka Salonen, the music director. Lillian Disney represented herself and her family as the single largest private donor until her death in 1998, with Diane Disney Miller also on the committee and serving as its vice-chair at one point. Circa 1995, Harry Hufford became volunteer full-time CEO of the committee, with Suzanne Marx his vice-president for development. At various points, other committee members included Stuart Ketchum, James A. Thomas, and Ronald J. Arnault. Mayor Riordan was also heavily involved.
Financial auditing/oversight: Hines Interests (beginning in '94, with Bruce Frey heading this work).
Seats 2,265.
Current home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Features an organ with 72 stops, 109 ranks, and 6,125 pipes, co-designed by Frank Gehry and Manuel Rosales, with assistance from Kevin Gilchrist, and built by Caspar Glatter-Götz. Early in the process, a special committee was formed (with Cherry Rhodes, Robert Anderson, and Michael Barone serving)—just for finding the right organ designer, settling on Manuel Rosales in 1990.
"In 1982, the family company, Retlaw Enterprises, sold the rights to Walt Disney's name and likeness to the Walt Disney Co. for $47 million. That money was put aside for an unspecified charitable gift. . . . In 1987, Music Center then-Chairman F. Daniel Frost, who had been Walt Disney's tax attorney, presented Lillian Disney with Los Angeles Times articles detailing the Music Center's desire for a new concert hall. Disney readily agreed to donate her funds. At the time, Frost was the son-in-law of Music Center founder Dorothy Chandler and was a board member of Times Mirror, parent company of The Times. He has since divorced and has left the Times Mirror board."
articles.latimes.com/1995-02-27/news/mn-36686_1_disney-hall ('95)
"Lillian Disney made an initial gift of $50 million in 1987 to build a performance venue as a gift to the people of Los Angeles and a tribute to Walt Disney's devotion to the arts and to the city. . . . Upon completion in 2003, the project cost an estimated $274 million; the parking garage alone cost $110 million. The remainder of the total cost was paid by private donations, of which the Disney family's contribution was estimated to $84.5 million with another $25 million from The Walt Disney Company. By comparison, the three existing halls of the Music Center cost $35 million in the 1960s (about $190 million in today's dollars). . . . The walls and ceiling of the hall are finished with Douglas-fir while the floor is finished with oak. The Hall's reverberation time is approximately 2.2 seconds unoccupied and 2.0 seconds occupied."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney_Concert_Hall
It is worth pointing out that the final building hardly resembles the competition designs and models from the invited design competition in 1988 and substantially deviated from the 1991 designs and models in several key areas such as cladding and landscaping.
From an initial field of ca. 80 entrants, then winnowed to a list of 25, the other three finalists in 1988 were Gottfried Böhm, Hans Hollein, and James Stirling.
The 1991 models and other mock-ups premiered at the Fifth International Exhibition of Architecture at the Venice Biennale in 1991 to great acclaim, before being submitted for approval.
"At one point, someone estimated that the project had over 90 consultants."
www.economist.com/node/86629 ('97)
During the first phase of the project, "a consortium of General Contracting firms, (Peck Jones, Turner Construction, and Obayashi) were selected to form the building entity, Concert Hall Builders." Yet I am not sure who the final constructing firms were.
Dan Dworksy:
I feel the need to point out that though Dan Dworsky is currently rather maligned within the Los Angeles architectural community, especially for his involvement in this project, he's directly responsible for my favorite Bunker Hill buildings, the Angelus Plaza senior housing complex, as well as the very decent Figueroa Courtyard. The vision of a revived Bunker Hill with more than just tall glass boxes of office space owes a great deal to his efforts over the years.
Michael Maltzan:
A rising star in the California architectural scene, recently garnering praise and awards for his New Carver Apartments for the Skid Row Housing Trust. A building that provides transitional housing for the recently formerly homeless, it's one I don't like for a number of nit-picky reasons, but whose social conscience I credit. One of his most prominent commissions was for another performance hall—Mashouf Performing Arts Center for SF State. My favorite of his works is the Billy Wilder Theatre at the Hammer, which is a great size for films they screen and makes me think every time that I've snuck inside a fancy, sexy lipstick holder from the late 1980s: hot pink, sleek black, kiss kiss. I also think he did a wonderful job with MoMA QNS, the temporary (and more fun) home of MoMA while the main building was being revamped during the early 2000s.
"Michael Maltzan established his independent practice in Los Angeles in 1995. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design (1985) and Harvard’s Graduate School of Design (1988), he worked briefly in Boston for Schwartz/Silver Architects and then for Machado and Silvetti Associates. . . Then in 1988, Maltzan moved to California, where he joined the office of Frank Gehry. . . In Gehry’s office, Maltzan worked on the initial design stages of the acclaimed Walt Disney Concert Hall (1988–2004) for Los Angeles and was project designer for the tautly elegant Vontz Center for Molecular Studies (1993–1999) at the University of Cincinnati."
Whole Foods (Dublin, Ohio) has a great way of displaying Ohio wines. Using "Local" is a much more intringuing gateway to open discussion about the product and overcomes the stigma "Ohio Wines" might have. Here, a special section fits well within the layout of the wine section which also emphasizes pairings, staff picks and eco-friendly wines. The staff is also educated and articulate about the wines. All around well done!
The Bible verses used to prove the "Pre-Trib" Rapture,
instead_prove the_ "Post-Trib" Rapture, _at
this conference held at Country Church in Redding, California,
and was attended by 800 men. Common sense should tell us that
there can't be two Second Comings. Hebrews 9:28 (paraphrased)
"...He comes once as a suffering Messiah, then a second time...
unto salvation." No third time mentioned in God's word, nor is
there any mention of dividing the second coming into two events.
So, lets reason together, He has already been here once, which
would leave one more event, The Second Coming of Christ,
that the Bible clearly states occurs after the great tribulation.
.
Futhermore, there isn't a single scripture in the entire Bible that
states Christians are removed before the Tribulation. If anyone
can find one, would you please Email me? Then, I promise you, I
would remove this webpage from every search engine. Please, no
assumptions, analogys or verses taken out of context.
.
The three senior pastors that spoke at this "Endtime Conference"
used nine scriptures to prove the "Pre-Trib" Rapture. However,
out of the nine they used, seven were taken out of context, and
the other two were based on assumptions._ Below are the nine
scriptures they used to "try" to prove the "Pre-Trib" Rapture:
.
.
(All verses quoted are KJV, but for an instant reference in the
English Standard (ESV), place the cursor on chapter and verse).
.
.
#1. I Corinthians 15:51-52
51"Behold I show you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we
shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,
at the last trump; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead
shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."
.
.
Read the last two lines in the above verse slowly, think about the
"order" (sequence) God inspired Paul to list these three events:
#1 The Last Trump,#2 The Resurrection,#3 The Rapture,
(we shall be changed). Paul would have listed the Rapture first,
instead of third, if this was to be a pre-tribulation Rapture. Also
Jesus says four times in John 6:39, 40, 44, 54, the resurrection
is on the Last day. So, if the Resurrection is on the Last Day,
as stated by Jesus, and in I Cor 15:52, Paul lists the Rapture
after the Resurrection. Paul has told us the "sequence" of
these (3) events and Jesus told us "when", (on the Last Day).
Is this such a difficult concept to comprehend??_Clearly, these
two verses teach a.....Post-Tribulation Rapture..... at the
Second Coming of Christ. How can the Last Trumpet sound,
the Resurrection, and then the rapture happen, seven years
before the "Last Day" ? ?
.
.
#2. I Thes.4:16
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout,
with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God:
and the dead in Christ shall rise first."
.
.
Again the word "trump" is used, but the Thessalonians were
unclear as to "when" this would happen. Paul apparently heard
that they were troubled about this, so he then wrote a _second
letter _to clear this up, and this reads as follows:
.
II Thes 2:1,2,3,4 (v-1) "Now we beseech you, brothern, by
the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering
together (Rapture) unto him,___ (v-2) That ye be not soon
shaken in mind,_or be troubled,_neither by spirit,_or by word,
nor by letter from us, _as that the _day of Christ_ is at hand.
(v-3) Let no man_deceive you_by any means: for_that day
shall not come_except there come a falling away first, and
that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition"(false Christ).
.
In this, second letter, Paul, this time_ makes it _very clear
that the false Christ_ comes first,__and (v-3) not to let anyone
deceive you. Then, refering back to the first letter he wrote, then
(after false Christ) the Lord descends, with a shout, with the voice
of the arch angel, with the"trump" of God: and the dead in Christ
shall rise first. This is the second coming of Christ, after the
tribulation_ So, with this_second letter_ Paul is making it
clear that this "trump"_ is not before the tribulation _its
after!! Its a post-tribulation rapture, on the Last Day!!
.
#3. Revelation 3:10
"Because thou has kept the word of my patience, I also will
keep thee from the hour of temptation, that shall come upon
all the world to try them that dwell upon the earth."
.
Notice that Jesus says, "....I will keep thee from...." , He does
not say, "...take thee out of..." . So, for a better understanding
of Rev. 3:10, Lets prove the Bible, with the Bible, and not assume
anything._ Lets let Jesus clearify this verse, which He does in
John 17:15, "I pray not that thou take them out of the world,
but that thou should keep them from the evil."
Jesus clearly says__"not" to take them out__in John 17:15.
So, how can the_I will Keep thee from_of Rev. 3:10_ mean_
I will take thee out of_? As pre-trib teachers would have you
believe. Jesus does "not" contradict Himself !!__For the
Greek meaning of "Keep thee from". See side column Note #2->
All of the early church fathers taught that the "Antichrist" comes
first (see link at the end of this post on "Early Church Fathers."
.
Gods wrath does not fall on us,"only those who had the mark
of the beast" (Rev 16:2). And those who "do not have the seal
of God" (Rev 9:4). Like the "144 thousand" of Rev. 7:3, we have
the seal of God._ See Eph.1:13 "....after you believed, you were
sealed......" And Eph.4:30 "......you are sealed unto the day of
redemption." There are several verses that clearly state, after we
accept Christ, we are sealed, (protected from Gods wrath).
.
#4. Matthew 24:27
"For as the lighting cometh out of the east, and shineth even
unto the west; so shall also the coming of the son of man be."
Go down two verses, Matt.24:29 tells you "when" this will be:
"Immediately__ after the tribulation__ of those days...."
Now Matt.24:30 "....then shall appear the sign of the son of man
(Jesus)..." Now Matt.24:31, "..with the great sound of a trumpet,
and they shall gather together (rapture) his elect...." Again the
same trumpet as in other verses, now back to Matt.24:26, Jesus
tells them not to believe people that tell you that He (Jesus) is
in a secret place (like a secret pre-trib rapture). Matt.24:27
is another verse that was clearly taken out of context, Its a post
tribulation rapture, at the second coming of Christ.
.
#5. Matthew 25:1-13
The parable of the "ten virgins"___ Here Jesus does not
talk about the "time" of His return, because He had just told
them a few minutes before about the time, (see the paragraph
before this one_Matt.24:29_definitely after the tribulation).
The Wedding Feast can only take place after the tribulation,
because the Resurrection dosn't happen until the Last day.
Jesus said four times that the Resurrection is on the Last
Day (John 6:39, 40, 44, 54). _ Then the bridegroom (church)
goes into the wedding feast after the second coming of Christ,
and guess who else is at this Wedding Feast?___1 The Old
Testament saints__2 The tribulation saints__3 The prophets.
4 The 144,000 new Christian Jews. There would have to be two
wedding feasts_two resurrections, and_two last days_ for the
"pre-trib" rapture to work. And_one verse_would also be nice!!
.
#6. Mark 13:6-37
In this entire chapter Jesus is talking about the events that
happen durning the tribulation, and that they were _not_ to
look for Him until_after_ certain events happen first, then in
Mark 13:24, 25, 26, 27, (paraphased) "...after the tribulation
of those days, then they shall see Him..." So Jesus again told
them He's coming back after the tribulation, making this a post-
tribulation rapture at the Second Coming of Christ.
.
#7. Luke 21:6-38
Basically this chapter is the same as the above chapter, where
Jesus returns__after__the tribulation, at the second coming of
Christ, except in v-36, He says, "....pray that you be accounted
worthy to escape all these things.."And we will, because we have
the seal of God, (Eph. 1:13, Eph. 4:30, II Cor 1:22, John 6:27).
We are protected (sealed) from Gods wrath, like the 144 thousand
of Revelation 7:4.
.
#8. II Peter 3:10
"...The Day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night."
Now lets let the Bible prove the Bible and go to I Thes. 5:2, where
the exact same words are used, "...the Day of the Lord so cometh
as a thief in the night." Then in I Thes.5:4, (paraphased) "But
[we] are not in darkness that this day should overtake [us] as a
thief." Why? Because I Thes.5:5 "... [we] are children of the light."
And Jesus says "Behold I come as a thief" right after the 6th
Vial is poured out at the end of the tribulation (Rev.16:12,15).
And this begins the Last Day. (I inserted "we" for "you" because
Peter and Pauls letters were to the Gentiles (non Jews_"us").
#9. Revelation 22:12
"And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me." So,
when does He give out rewards? See Rev. 11:15, 18, "And the
7th angel sounded...[its time]...that thou give rewards...unto
the saints..."_Its after the 7th trump!!__At the end!!
Rewards are given out after the post-resurrection rapture,
after the Second Coming of Christ.
[A]
Now, all of the (9) verse references listed above, was all
that was presented to prove the "Pre-Trib" rapture
by the three pastors at this conference. You can see
that they were all taken out of context, or based
on assumptions. God was very angry with the
ten spies, who made Israel fear the Giants that were in
the land that God promised them (Num.13:1-2), and_they
were afraid to go in (Num.13:31,32,33). We are doing the
same thing today, by fearing the "Giant" (anti-Christ) _we add
"pre-trib" to Gods word, without a single verse to prove it,
this is very dangerous, (see Rev. 22:18). It is not my intent to
belittle these three pastors, I am sure they are sincere Christians,
but if they can't come up with one single verse that specificy
places this event before the tribulation, who can?_can you?
[B]
Its really very simple, if its not in Gods word, its not going to
happen. Again, I want to repeat that these nine scriptures were
all that was used to prove the "pre-trib" rapture that day, I was
there! The senior pastor of this church has read this article, (the
nine verses) and made a comment to me via Email, and he did not
question that these verses were all that was used to support this.
[C]
Note: The "pre-trib" view is a new doctrine, you will not find
pre-trib writings or documents in any church history until about
the year 1830. Edward Irving, (Catholic Apostolic Church) and
soon after, John Darby, (Plymouth Brethren) both of England,
were teaching the pre-tribulation rapture. _However, the most
important reason for the acceptance of this "pre-trib" rapture
view in the United States was the Scofield Reference Bible. In the
footnotes he split the second coming of Christ into two events:
Coming for the saints, then (7yrs later) Coming with the saints (at
which time we enter into God's millennium kingdom on earth). My
question is where do we go for the seven years? The Bible clearly
states (KJV)"The righteous (saints) shall never be removed: but
the wicked shall not inhabit the earth." (Prov.10:30) see also
Ps.37:29 and Prov.2:21-22.
[D]
Some may ask:_"what difference does it make if Christ returns
before the tribulation, or after"?_ There are sincere Christians on
both sides. However, the Bible says in I Thes.5:21, to "prove all
things."_And in II Tim.4:4,"And they shall turn away their ears
from the truth, and shall be turned into fables." (fiction) Like
the "Left Behind" book and movie, cars & planes crashing, etc.
Millions killed before the tribulation even starts, when all these
people still have/had a chance to be saved during this time. The
truth was Left Behind, in the making of this movie, yet it sells
well in the religious marketplaces. The "Pre-Trib" doctrine has
become amusement for the masses, a multi billion dollar business
[E]
If such a major event as the "pre-trib" Rapture is true, why
isn't it found in Old Testament prophecy?__or in Jesus's
own teachings?__ or His disciples?__or any of the New
Testament writers?__Jesus said in Mark 13:23,__ "I have
foretold you all things."__He would have told us!!
[F]
Others may say: "That the tribulation is only for the Jews,"
(the 144 thousand) and that they are the people that God uses in
this time to bring people to Christ. This may be true, in part, but
look at Rev. 7:1,2,3,4 where God puts a seal on this small group.
And because of this seal, they are protected!! The woman
(Israel) is protected in the last 3 1/2 years of the tribulation
(Rev. 12:13-14). This, in turn, makes the sepent (Satan) angry,
so he goes after us in Rev.12:17, those who have "the testimony
of Jesus Christ." _Again, go back to Rev. 7:9, "After this (the
sealing of the 144000) I beheld, and look, a great multitude...
of all nations...". Now skip to Rev.7:13, who are these people,
and where did they come from?_Then Rev.7:14, "these are
they that came out of great tribulation...". And God just
stated in Rev 12:13-14, that the woman(Israel, the 144,000 Jews)
are protected. So, who do you think this great multitude is that
has the "testimony of Jesus Christ", if its not us??
[G]
So, there are untold millions, along with the Jews that are in
this period of time. To say this time is only for the Jews is another
assumption and not valid. They base this on Isaiah 45:4, where
Israel is called Gods "elect" (in the KJV) so then in Matt. 24:31,
when Jesus sends his angels to gather His "elect" after the
tribulation, that this event (the second coming of Christ) is only
for the Jews who have to go through the tribulation.__ After we
(non Jews) accept the Lord Jesus Christ as our saviour, we then
become Gods "elect."__ I will back up this statement with
Pauls letters to non Jews, the Galatians and the Colossians :
[H]
1. Gal.3:28-29 (paraphrased)"There is neither Jew or Greek,you
are all one in Christ...you also are Abrahams seed..."(elect)
.2. Col 3:11-12, "....there is neither Greek or Jew....but Christ
is all, and in all. Put on therefore, as the __Elect of God...."
.3. I Peter 1:1-2, Peter writes a letter to different nationalitys
and calls them the _"elect of God"_ because they have been
"washed in the blood of the Lamb"__ like we have been.
So, Israel_"and"_the church_"are"_Gods elect!!
Jesus has one bride! He created the miracle of uniting Jew and
Gentile alike into one bride. Let's just "reason together", does it
make any sense that Jesus would rapture out a partial bride?
What parts would He take first? And then...what? Pick up the
other parts later - with whatever the results the 144K Jews are
able to accomplish during the 7 years? Why would Jesus remove
only some?
And... if He was going to do this, don't you think He would have
told us? At least one verse stating that He was going to take some
out first? Jesus said in Mark 13:23, "I have foretold you all
things." He would have told us!! And do you suppose Jesus
would have the wedding feast with His "raptured" church (bride),
without the tribulation saints, the Old Testament saints, the
prophets or the 144K?? Let's think about this, are we really
this special?_ Compared to them?_I think not!
I am going to add a few scriptures, (that were not mentioned at
this conference) that are also used to support the pre-tribulation
rapture, so that you will have a complete list of all the verses,
assumptions and analogys this "new" doctrine was based on:
[I]
1. I Thes.5:2 "...the Day of the Lord so cometh as a "thief
in the night." But is not valid to be used for "pre-trib" because
this happens after the "6th vial" is poured out at the end of
the tribulation, after Rev. 16:12, then Jesus says in Rev.16:15,
"Behold, I come as a thief."_Its after the tribulation, at the
Second Coming of Christ.
[J]
2. Matt. 24:40, is another one,_"...One shall be taken, and
the other left."_Jesus made this statement just minutes after
He had just told them "Immediately after the tribulation
of those days..." (Matt.24:29). Thats when "one will be taken and
and the other left." Not seven years before!
[K]
3. The 'Noah' analogy__Many analogys are used by the Pre-
Trib Rapture teachers, for lack of scripture proof (like, not one).
However, Noah is their main one, so I will deal only with this one.
Everyone is aware of the fact that Noah warned the people that
a flood is coming and to repent, but _they refused to listen.
The Pre-Trib Rapture teachers say "thats like the Rapture", so
as Noah was saved out of the flood, we are going to be "Raptured"
out of the Tribulation. Its an analogy!!_ It Proves nothing!
The Post-Trib 'Noah' analogy_We, the Post-Tribulation
Rapture teachers, are warning you that a flood is coming
(the Tribulation) , but you refuse to listen, just like in the
days of Noah.But Instead of a flood of water, it's a flood of Satanic
deception that started with a small wave in 1830 with the new
pre-tribulation rapture doctrine. Now this wave of deception has
covered the entire western world and has blinded us to the huge
wave that may soon be upon us. Because millions refuse to hear
the truth, many will fall in this dark time, and be deceived into
taking the "Mark of the Beast" and be forever lost. However,
post-trib rapture teachers don't have to use analogys to prove
their view. But even with two dozen solid scriptures, the people
still _refuse to listen!!
[L]
4. Mark 13:32, is also used_ "But of that day and that hour
knoweth no man..." _Jesus told them this a few minutes after
telling them in Mark 13:24 "...in those days after that tribulation,
the sun shall be darkned, and the moon shall not give her light..."
And goes on to say in Mark 13:28-29 that we will know this day is
close because next He says in Mark 13:30, that the generation
that sees these things (the tribulation events He just spoke of),
would, (back to Mark 13:26-27) "...see the Son of man coming in
the clouds...to gather His elect from the...uttermost parts of the
earth..." We still will not know the exact day, only that it is close.
This is the second coming of Christ after the tribulation.
[M]
Some people ask me, "why is it that the vast majority of
Christians believe in the "pre-trib"?_When Jesus came to the
earth the first time, the vast majority of the religious people
(the church) of that time, rejected him, even after many Old
Testament prophecys fortold of this event. But they did not want
a suffering Messiah, they wanted a conquering king. In this
case the vast majority was wrong!! Now, today, we want the
Messiah to take us out before a certain event, not after!! But,
guess what, we don't get to choose. He only comes to the earth
two times (Heb 9:28). Once as a suffering Messiah, and then as a
conquering KING at the Second Coming of Christ.
[N]
We soon may be entering the last seven years of this age, the 70th
week of Daniel. We will not be 'up in the bleachers' (as our
endtime preachers would have us believe) and we need not fear,
God is with us. Jesus said "...I will build my church; and
the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (Matt 16:18)
[O]
No mater what view we hold, we still need to accept each other as
Christians. Those of us that hold to the post-tribulation rapture
view, should not be thought of as troublemakers, we are only
concerned that millions may fall during this time, a time when we
(the church) can be used by God. "..The people that do know their
God shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that understand
among the people shall instruct many..." (Daniel 11:32-33)
And, then we can be overcomers as in Rev. 7:9,13,14 "...a great
mulitude, which no man could number, of all nations.."
v-13 ( paraphrased) "...who are these people and where did
they come from?" _ Then v-14, "...these are they which
came out of great tribulation, and washed their robes, and
made them white in the Blood of the Lamb."
.
Print this article_think about it!_The nine scriptures used
by these three pastors was all they had to prove the "pre-trib"
rapture in a_ six hour_ conference.?? Something is wrong!!
The black thing in front of the signalbox is, according to tradition, the firebox from the Liskeard & Caradon Railway engine "Caradon". For many years it stood at Moorswater engine shed, Liskeard, where it was used as the staff privy. If its origin is true, it was built by Avonside in 1878; the engine itself dated from the 1860s, and was withdrawn and scrapped in 1907.
None of the signals seem to be in commission - you can see the white "not in use" cross on the ground disc at left.
Acrylic on Canvas, 11" x 14" Completed 4/2008 (sold)
This is the number 2 painting in a series of small paintings I think of as my "Cities of Glass" or "Fungal Cities"
These paintings are small, but not "tiny"; 8" x 10" & 11" x 14". However, I consider them to be Miniatures because of the minute detail I put into them.
Some info for you Artists; I wear several different magnifying glasses when I paint these. I start with standard magnification glasses with a 250 power, and move all the way up to Jeweler's goggles with a magnification power of 700%. In between I switch from #3, #4, #5, and the #7's for the finest details. I used "script" or "liner" brushes, very slender and long. I go as low as size 0018! (made by Loew-Cornell series #7350)
These are also experiments in subtlety. My earlier work is well known for blatant imagery. Now, I desire to make some paintings that will allow the viewer to project their own interpretation into them. I no longer feel the need to bash people over the head with my art. I find it more challenging and satisfying to trigger imaginations.
This one is purely aesthetic. It is meant to provoke feelings of "other worldliness" and a little mystery as to what is actually going on in this microcosmic environment.
The idea for the sleeper in the bubbled top boat came to me when I dreamed that my bed was floating in the water while I had a fishing pole and my line in the water.
I'm selling this one at auction. It's in a great heavy hardwood frame that makes it look extraordinary. It's up on eBay at the following location: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150235787532
School children are being fingerprinted without parental knowledge!
Many parents aren't even aware that their children have been fingerprinted at school. Some find out by chance, sometimes years later. If you're a parent, we strongly recommend you ask your children if it's happened to them. You may be shocked by what you discover.
Kiddy printing is an immoral invasion of privacy!
Protect your children from this abuse of their rights!
We're just a group of ordinary parents and citizens aiming to stop schools from fingerprinting our children without asking us, and in many cases without even having the courtesy to inform us. Since 2002 when this disgraceful practice started, neither the DfES nor the Information Commissioner have made any attempt to intervene. Indeed, the DfES have made it easy for schools to obtain the necessary funding.
Mistakes with fingerprinting have already been made and people’s lives wrecked!
Shirley McKie is a former Scottish police officer. Experts from the Scottish Criminal Record Office (SCRO) accused DC McKie of leaving her thumb print on the bathroom door frame of a murder crime-scene on January 14, 1997. But she denied ever having been inside the house in Kilmarnock of murder victim Marion Ross, whose body was discovered on January 8, 1997. In March 1998, DC McKie was arrested in a dawn raid and charged with perjury. However, in May 1999, the Scottish High Court of Justiciary rejected the SCRO's fingerprint evidence and McKie was unanimously found not guilty of perjury. McKie sued her employers regarding the manner in which she was arrested but, in February 2003, lost the case against Strathclyde Police and faced a legal bill of £13,000. McKie faced bankruptcy as a result, and she had to be treated for depression.
Brandon Mayfield, a Portland lawyer held for two weeks as a suspect in the Madrid train bombings in 2004. FBI investigators matched prints at the scene to Mayfield, and an independent examiner verified the match. But Spanish National Police examiners insisted the prints did not match Mayfield and eventually identified another man who matched the prints. - The FBI acknowledged the error and Mayfield was released.
David Atkinson, a student found himself at his local police station under suspicion of stealing Christmas cards he last saw when he put them in a postbox five years ago. Due to fingerprints found on the mail – which was stolen then recovered – police thought they had their man. However, it transpired the "suspect's" fingerprints were those of the student who had innocently sent the cards to relatives when he was 15. The battling student has been told his DNA samples will now be removed from the police national computer.
10 Things You Need To Know About Primary Schools Fingerprinting Our Children (summary)
1) Fingerprinting is being introduced in thousands of UK Primary Schools as part of a subsidised library package called Junior Librarian that they have purchased, encouraged by central government. New schools are joining the scheme at the rate of around 20 a week. To date, more than 3500 schools and nurseries (manufacturer's official figure, given to the Daily Mirror) have fingerprinted and photographed 3/4 million children, ranging in age from 3 to 11; impressionable, trusting and naive.
2) This is always done without explicit parental consent, and even in some cases, without parental knowledge. Schools strongly resist sending parents the opt-in consent slips that are used for just about everything else. Some parents only find out AFTERWARDS when they ask their children "what did you do at school today?"
3) The whole scheme may be illegal. And at least one Local Education Authority has already sent out guidelines to all its schools restricting the use of biometrics without express parental consent. But since governing bodies and headteachers have responsibility for many decisions on their school budgets, neither Ministers nor the Department for Education nor Local Education Authorities have any way of knowing just how many schools under their jurisdiction are fingerprinting the children in their care.
4) Schools are not nearly secure enough to perform biometric scans (airports and banks spend millions on their security). There is a real danger that children's fingerprints could be stolen, and this could affect them for the rest of their lives (eg for passports and bank accounts) since unlike a PIN number, a fingerprint cannot ever be changed.
5) Fingerprinting 5-year-olds without asking parents has become a multi-million pound business. Some of the companies involved in school biometrics use some very questionable sales techniques, and have close links with the US military and even the interrogators at Guantanamo Bay.
6) Data held on these systems is not protected by the Data Protection Act and may fall under the provisions of the Children Act 2004 which allows data on every child in the UK to be accessed and shared by a wide range of government officials including police, teachers, GPs and social workers, without parents' consent or even knowledge. Head Teachers have no power to overrule this, so any well-intentioned assurances they may give parents about data sharing are worthless. One system, Junior Librarian, "even has a report specifically designed for school inspections".
7) There is no hard evidence of any lasting educational benefit from fingerprinting children. Aside from anecdotal claims in manufacturers' glossy brochures, no independent research on this has ever been carried out. In addition, the manufacturers have admitted their systems work just as well without the biometric scanning, and some parents and teachers have claimed they even work better without.
8) As schools increasingly come to rely on biometric systems like Junior Librarian in their day to day management, they become ever more impersonal and anonymous, and vital teacher pupil interaction is lost.
9) Some experts claim that one side effect of fingerprinting small children, whether intentional or not, is to condition them to accept without question Big Brother-style biometric tracking in later life. And without wishing to seem alarmist, the last time young children were fingerprinted en masse without the express consent of their parents was during the Second World War.
10) The whole issue needs to be debated openly. Schools are very reluctant to do this. Many even try to cloud the issue by referring to "using your thumb", "fingertip registration", or "fingerswipe system" in a seemingly bizarre attempt to hide the fact that they are simply fingerprinting children without express consent. The police, who presumably know about these things, call the systems they use "fingerprint scanners", and use them to catch criminals.
An unexpected occurrence, but a welcome one, was the marvelous dreams I had while I slept each night. I do dream most nights, and enjoy remembering them, but my dreams changed when I got to Jerusalem, in a way that I cannot say, but it makes me to want to go back.
anyways, i will probably never do it again either. i dont like how it makes the picture look "dirty"...
its different i suppose. i'm more of a fan of getting it right in the camera, and just posting it straight to flickr without editing! haha. well, at least its not the worst that could happen!
anyways, besides the lame copy-cat editing (not even how Dave Hill does it, I'm quite sure!!) Strobist info: sb800 1/16 power, camera left and slightly high into silver brollie, sb600 1/64 power, camera right
Well i "used" to do photography - admittedly a bit badly but since i have left that kind of arena (creative uni degree and jobs etc) i feel a little stunted. I miss painting, i miss expression - dance, theatre, film making and of course photography.
This picture i guess shows what i am like when i allow myself to relax, to step off the hmaster wheel and be me. I get the most inspiration when i am asleep or day dreaming in bed. thats where i gather all my thoughts together and allow them to develop.
So this is number one - lets see if i keep this up...
Any help or pointers will be gratefully reieved as cannot remember a thing...
Flickr SUNDAY BRUNCH IN THE MONASTERY!
Tags: monks   brunch
TÊTE DE MOINE as a proper term has been used since about 1790, but the cheese has a much longer history. The monastery of Bellelay was established in 1136 and confirmed by Pope Innozenz II six years later. As early as 1192, or one century before the beginnings of the Swiss Confederation, the monks of the monastery Bellelay were first mentioned in connection with cheese. At that time they paid the annual rent on various properties with cheese made in their abbey. Time and again documents from subsequent centuries mention the use of the valuable cheese as a means of payment.
The oldest description of the Bellelay cheese dates from 1628 and states that a "very fatty milk of impeccable quality from the best grasses and herbs of the country is used".
Source: Brochure of Guido Burkhalter, Der Bellelay Käse (TÊTE DE MOINE) und sein Ursprungsgebiet, Schaffhausen, Kühn, 1979, page 16)
During the French Revolution the monks were evicted from the monastery in 1797, but the cheese was still produced in the Royal cheese dairies of the former abbey. By the mid-19th century a farmer from Bellelay, A. Hofstetter, succeeded in boosting production anew when his cheese received awards at the "Concours Universel" of Paris in 1856 and at other trade fairs. Towards the end of the 19th century several village cheese dairies were established. About 10 tons of TÊTE DE MOINE were exported to as far away countries as Russia. At the beginning of the 20th century the making of the cheese gradually shifted from the farms to the village dairies, and by 1950 the annual production had increased to 27,000 kg.
The founding of the cheese trade organisation in the 70ties and the invention of the «Girolle®» in 1981 mark another turning point in the history of TÊTE DE MOINE.
This is a "no publicity-right violation" poster, like "war on bootlegs".
なめんなよ means ... I don't really know, it's from the 1980s (昭和55年ごろ), very colloquial, showing strong attitude of youngsters (暴走族 - yobs on bikes, so to speak).
The rebel cats with this strong attitude, なめ猫, are from the 1980s. I don't know why. Probably they want their message to reach people in their thirties, who know the なめ猫 series very well.
This is a photo of an electronic billboard taken on July 14, 2005.
This electronic billboard ad was along interstate I-10 in a spot where traffic backs up for hours every day in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Never seen anything like it in the US. This is another devious example of how Bush has used the 911 incident to manipulate the American people. And the worst part is that the Bush administration (after everything else they have lied about) has without question lied to the world about the truth regarding the 911 attacks.
Today on October 3, 2005 I found out from Lamar Advertising of Baton Rouge, that a "Private" donation (an individual) from Rural Louisiana Funded this series of Bush Advertisements.
Given that the Bush administration has now been found to be "Buying News" illegally, is this form of advertising acceptable? The Bush administration could design an ad and get anyone to pay for it and we would never know the difference. Just like Payola in the music industry. Would it be okay to put up abortion ad's paid for by the HMO's for example?
Buying of News by Bush's Aides Is Ruled Illegal
Published: October 1, 2005
WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 - Federal auditors said on Friday that the Bush administration violated the law by buying favorable news coverage of President Bush's education policies, by making payments to the conservative commentator Armstrong Williams and by hiring a public relations company to analyze media perceptions of the Republican Party.
In a blistering report, the investigators, from the Government Accountability Office, said the administration had disseminated "covert propaganda" in the United States, in violation of a statutory ban.
www.nytimes.com/2005/10/01/politics/01educ.html
We have to override the Bush Media Machine and expose the truth about this criminal administration. The things they have done and are doing are unprecedented. Don’t believe ANYTHING you SEE or HEAR no matter what the medium. This is how we got in this position.
WAKE UP AMERICA!
What's it gonna take?
The Bush administration has not told the truth about 911.
They are lying. How could they do that you ask? They did it with a war! How? With advertising, lying, buying media, fixing elections, fraud, payola...
White House Silenced Experts Who Questioned Iraq Intel Six Months Before War
by Jason Leopold
June 12, 2003
John Dean, the former counsel to President Richard Nixon, wrote in a column this week that if President Bush mislead the public in building a case for war in Iraq, a case for impeachment could be made.
"Presidential statements, particularly on matters of national security, are held to an expectation of the highest standard of truthfulness," Dean wrote this week. "A president cannot stretch, twist or distort facts and get away with it. President Lyndon Johnson's distortions of the truth about Vietnam forced him to stand down from reelection. President Richard Nixon's false statements about Watergate forced his resignation."
Tags: nyc   newyork   newyorkcity   transit   newyorkcitytransit   mta   subway   ifoughtthelaw   clearingmygoodname   2005   may2005   transitauthority   farecardactivitydatareport   topv111
I received in the mail today, from the MTA, the long-awaited printout known as a "Farecard Activity Data Report," showing all the activity on the unlimited montly farecard that I was using on the day that I was wrongfully slapped with a summons for alleged fare evasion.
To recap the background facts:
On March 29, 2005, shortly before 6:00 p.m., I was going downtown to attend the Auto Show, which was held at the Javits Center, near the 42nd Street Times Square subway station. But in entering my "home" subway station at 77th and Lexington, I mistakenly entered on the uptown, rather than downtown, side. In entering the uptown platform, when I swiped my Metrocard through the magnetic reader on the turnstile, the turnstile (as often occurs) couldn't read my card. Then when I re-swiped my card, the display on the turnstile indicated that my card was "just used" -- leading the turnstile to reject my card (after using an unlimited monthly pass, you can't use it again at the same station for 18 minutes; this is to prevent one person from using their card to let all their friends through the turnstile without them having to buy their own cards). So I went to the booth clerk, who ran my card through her own reader in her booth, then remotely activated a turnstile to let me through to the platform.
I then realized that I was on the wrong platform. At that station, the only way for me to get to the downtown platform was to exit the station, cross the street, and go through the turnstiles on the other side of the station to get to the downtown platform. So I did that; but of course, when I swiped my farecard through one of the downtown turnstiles, the card was once again rejected as "just used."
When I told this to the booth clerk on the downtown side, however, unlike her counterpart on the uptown side, she refused to let me through the turnstiles. She refused even to examine my farecard to confirm that it had just been used on the uptown side. Instead, she snidely intoned, "Transit policy requires you to wait 18 minutes." I was supposed to wait 18 minutes and THEN run my card through the turnstile again. Faced with this ridiculous situation, I crawled under the turnstile -- and into the arms of a police officer who was waiting on the platform. Well, maybe not quite into his arms, but you get the idea. And he wrote me a ticket for sneaking under a turnstile with intent to evade the fare.
So my defense is based on the fact that I had no intent to evade the fare -- and that, in fact, I had tendered valid fare in the form of my monthly unlimited ride Metrocard. At my initial hearing before the MTA's Transit Adjudication Bureau last month, the hearing officer was sympathetic to my position, but said that I bore the burden of proving that I had possessed, and attempted to use, the monthly pass at the time of the incident. He gave me an adjournment, so that I could obtain the Farecard Activity Data Report that is shown above.
The problem is that the report (which is best viewed at the larger sizes to see the detail in the columns) does not document the use of my Metrocard at the 77th Street station on March 29. It makes no mention of (1) my swiping of the card through the turnstile at the entrance to the uptown platform that elicited the "just used" message (after the machine couldn't read my card), or (2) my swiping of the card, minutes later, through the turnstile on the downtown side (which also elicited a "just used" message). The only entries for March 29 (and note that the date appears on the second column from the left) are (1) an entrance at the 42nd Street Times Square Station at 20:42 (i.e. 8:42 p.m.), followed by (2) a ride on the cross-town bus (referred to, in the 4th column from the right, as "5740") at 21:00 (i.e., 9:00 p.m.). These rides reflect my return home AFTER attending the auto show.
I called MetroCard Customer Service to ask about the omission from my report. They explained that uses of a MetroCard that result in a "just used" message do not get recorded in the system -- and thus do not end up in these reports. The reason is that only uses that reflect an actual payment of fare -- that is, which result in the turnstile being activated to let the person through onto the platform -- get preserved in the MTA's records, and logged as to the time that the card is used. And even though we're talking about an unlimited use pass, such instances are technically considered payment of fare, even though no funds are actually deducted from the card at the time of use.
So I am left not being able to directly prove that I used my card at the time I said I did. And that would seem to raise some doubt as to whether my defense will succeed at my adjourned hearing (which I will have next week; under the terms of my adjournment, I can just walk in any time on or before June 8 and have my new hearing on the spot).
However, I hope that I now have at least sufficient circumstantial evidence to corroborate my sworn testimony: (1) I have my bank statement showing that my ATM / debit card was used to pay $76 (the cost of a 30-day farecard) to the MTA on March 1, which was less than 30 days before the March 29 incident. (2) the printout of that farecard's activity shows that it was used at the 42nd Street Station about 3 hours after the incident. That supports my claim that I had my Metrocard in my possession when I entered the 77th Street Station earlier that evening to head downtown. Hopefully, that will be enough for the hearing officer to find that I have proven my defense.
I use "three-color folders" to get organized. Red , blue and yellow folders. Whenever anything needs to be done comes up(todo-list, print-outs from the web to read, etc.), i throw them in the Red. I use blank sheets of papers from Yellow to work, and use Blue to keep things for reference. At the end of day, i only needs to make sure that nothing left in the Red. I picked these vivid colors because it's easily recognizable in the bag.
"Ulam" is a name given to a group of herbs and vegetables that are eaten raw or blached (quickly dip in hot water) that are eaten with rice. It can also normally eaten with some side seasoning like budu (grinded dried anchovies @ ikan billis or dried prawn @ udang bari), cencaluk (a spicy sauce made from tiny baby prawns, cillis and other seasoning) or sambal belacan (chilli paste made from dried fish or prawn paste); eaten with rice. Ulam is famous as daily fare for the Malay community in villages. Ulam is taken from many different portions of a plant. This includes the shoots, leaves, umbut (someone help me with this translation please, thanks), seed, fruit, root and sometimes the flower. Common vegetables such as cucumber, lettuce and eggplant is also used to make an Ulam dish. Traditional medicinal herbs are also used.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ulam" is analogous to the Western practice of eating raw vegetables and fruits - whatever is in hand - in salads. The condiments differ, instead of salad dressings, various types of "Sambal", typically "Sambal Belacan"( www.flickr.com/photos/liyin/13767761/ ) is consumed.
