The first one is of this wonderful sixties girl group, The Marvelettes. The Marvelettes were an all-girl group who achieved popularity in the early to mid-1960s. They consisted of schoolmates Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson (later Katherine Anderson Schnaffer), Georgeanna Tillman (later Georgeanna Tillman-Gordon), Juanita Cowart (later Juanita Cowart Motley) and Georgia Dobbins, who was replaced by Wanda Young (later Wanda Rogers) prior to the group signing their first deal. The group was the first major successful act of Motown Records after The Miracles and were its first significant successful girl group on the label's early years after the release of the number-one single, Please Mr. Postman. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as extending from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. The term film noir, French for "black film",[1] first applied to Hollywood films by French critic Nino Frank in 1946...2] ... film noir is often identified with a visual style, unconventional within a Hollywood context, that emphasizes low-key lighting and unbalanced compositions...[8] These snippets describe the most genral terms of what is known as Film Noir- a dark, sometimes sinister, highly gripping style of movie making. What does this have to do with a Marvelettes song? Motown for the most part is known for upbeat soulful pop songs with the artists visually capturing a similar upwardly mobile style of dress and appearance. There are notable exceptions to the Bright Beat of the Motown Sound- The Four Tops' "Reach Out (I'll Be There)", the Supremes' "Love Child", Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." However, one of the most sinister and viscous exceptions to the Motown Rule of a hit is "I'll Keep Holding On" by the Marvelettes. Most of the population of all ages knows The Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman" or "Don't Mess With Bill" from oldies radio. That's what makes this song all the more startling. That the same group that gave us such straight-ahead pop tunes could deliver such a dangerous, murky, gothic song. The writers and producers are the same men who produced Martha And The Vandellas' "Dancing In The Street": William "Mickey" Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter. Motown fanatics know very well that these two were quite progressive in their songs and productions, esepcially Ivy Jo Hunter. With "I'll Keep Holding On", the two seemed to tap very deeply into the darker side of human behavior and the effect unrequited love can produce on an individual. "I'll Keep Holding On" is basically the story of a woman hot on the trail of a man she loves- and she's not even considering that "NO" could be acceptable answer from this man. Wanda Young Rogers is the lead on this track and when you compare her breathy, sultry style on "Don't Mess With Bill" to her subliminally dangerous delivery here, you have to gain deep respect for the woman, for the group, to be able to effectively cover the wide spectrum of Motown's landscape from Teen Favorites to Adult matters of love. "I'll Keep Holding On" is very much the aural version of a classic Film Noir classic. The music mix is dark, black, shadowy and menacing-especially on the mono mix. Drums, guitars, pianos, bass, chains slashed against the studio floor all are mixed into one mass where everything sounds as if every musician was playing in the world's largest and longest cavern. Everything sounds as if it's taking place way, way, WAY back in the background. Pay special attention to the horns as they dramatically cut in at key points. They would be right at home in Joan Crawford's "Midlred Pierce" or "Daisy Kenyon." Find this song, download it- it's one of the Marvelettes' and Motown's most incredible songs. You'd be quite amused at how many 'fixes' this mailbox has undergone over the years! Is it weird to say you love your mailbox? And I really love the old man's mailbox garden ♥ ... and my favorite season (of course) is in the early summer when the clematis vines crawl up and into the mailbox. I'm sure our postman loves to stick his hand into the tangle of clematis blossoms and spiderwebs!! Perhaps that is why I am still standing and waiting for him? Often, some of the best songs are the ones rarely, if ever heard. This one by the group sounds like the audio equivilent of one of those classic black-and-white film-noir thrillers. In its mono version, "I'll Keep Holding On" sounds dark, menacing and dangerous. Wanda Rogers turns in a chilling performance as the ultimate hunter who has no intention of turning loose the man she loves. I once read a review of this song as "music to go mental by." It's a fitting description as the beat itself will grab you by the legs and hang you upside down. Drummer Benny Benjamin drives the bass drum so relentlessly in places your'll find your dancing feet begging for mercy. In fact, Benny and bassist James Jamerson play like such a tight unit, you wonder how anyone could humanly play so well together. Also take note of the use of the horn section- there are areas where horns suddenly flare out of nowhere to comment on the action- again, the effect is like a Hitchock thriller. One of my favorites, and hopefully a new favorite for you.
