Bouazizi lived in the charmless Tunisian town of Sidi Bouzid, 125 miles south of Tunis. On a Friday morning almost exactly a year ago, he set out for work, selling produce from a cart. Police had hassled Bouazizi routinely for years, his family says, fining him, making him jump through bureaucratic hoops. On Dec. 17, 2010, a cop started giving him grief yet again. She confiscated his scale and allegedly slapped him. He walked straight to the provincial-capital building to complain and got no response. Excerpts available online now, in newsstands next week. Art for an article about the great division in spending between the upper and middle class by Jeffrey Sachs. I wasn't sure if Time would like the idea of the cover appearing as if it has been slashed in half, as it basically rips through the identity. But thankfully they loved it. The stack of money is copy paper that I cut. I colored the paper using my son's sidewalk chalk. I ground up the green, yellow and white chalk and made a powder until the hue was correct. Then I dusted the powder over the paper with my wife's blush brush. Since then Time Magazine has not retracted or responded in any way. I guess news of Britney Spears and Rambo's new mission make better news and money for TIME. "Dear Time Magazine Editors, I am writing to you in order to express the discontent of a number of people, namely residents of the Island of Samos, Greece, who found your article on migration in Europe (December 3, 2007; "Who's crossing the Borders?") terribly misinforming. Regarding Greece you report an influx of 4,800 migrants originating from Russia. (!)The reality is much direr. In 2007 alone, tens of thousands of illegal immigrants entered European territory via neighbouring Turkey. In the same year, more than 4,000 illegal immigrants entered Greece, through the small island of Samos, which is less than a mile away from the Turkish coast. Most of these people originating in Iraq, Palestine, Sudan, Afghanistan and as far away countries as Pakistan. Unfortunately by ignoring the true facts you are misinforming your readers on the full extents of the problem of migration, which is sparked by instability and the suffering of millions of people caused to a large degree, by western intervention in poor countries. Such false reporting fails to address the responsibility of Western nations in regards to this situation and, therefore, urge their citizens and politicians to reconsider much of their foreign policies. Furthermore failing to inform your readers and the public results in hiding and denying the suffering of millions of people who, after passing so many hardships, see themselves transformed into invisible ghosts; their only chances of survival resting on accepting exploitation or resorting to a life of crime. It is a fact that crime in Greece and in Europe, another dark side-effect of illegal immigration, has risen greatly the last few years. We hope that in the immediate future you will restore such historic truths and positively contribute to the issues with accurate and timely news reporting. The photo, taken in 2000, is a studio shoot of Benazir Bhutto in Paris, France. Here you can see the original file, and the way it was cropped for the cover. In my opinion, the crop is really nice, and adds strength to the portrait of the assassinated leader.
