HUNTER ARMY AIR FIELD, Savannah, Ga. Apr. 25, 2013 – Chinook Flight Engineers from Spain’s Army Air Force crossed the pond to train with some of the Army National Guard’s finest before deploying to Afghanistan. Georgia’s Army National Guard Chinook unit out of Savannah hosted the Spaniards and conducted a variety of training including sling load operations, pinnacle landings, dust landings, confined area operations, and water bucket operations.

Facing the port and modernized in 1640 by its owner Joannot Haraneder, this stone and pink brick majestic residence is a good example of classical architecture of the time: Venetian-styled double arches galleries, the perfect symmetry of its façade and dormers located on the corniche.

Topped by a watchtower where Joannot could monitor the movement of its ships, this house hosted the future Queen of France, Marie-Thérèse of Austria, Infanta of Spain, when she was 22 - as old as her illustrious husband Louis XIV. She stayed in the house between the 7th and 9th of June 1660. She was welcomed by queen mother Anne of Austria, who had been staying there for a month already.

Spain's electricity grid operator REE has a great website at www.ree.es.

There you can, amongst other things, see the electricity generation mix in realtime (or search historic data) - see demanda.ree.es/generacion_acumulada.html

Yesterday, for the entire 24 hours the generation mix never went below 45% from renewables (the two top green bands) and was over 50% for almost all of the 24 hours.

Kate Spain's 12 days of Christmas Quilt. I used the pattern in the Winter Quilts and More magazine. Then used one jelly roll of the fabric that I purchased from Fat Quarter Shop. I used Kona White that already had on hand, then for only the second time I used premade binding. This was sitting for about a month waiting to be basted, quilted and bound. I wanted it to go quickly, but sometimes that doesn't happen. I at least did finish it before the new year. The back is pieced with leftover fabric from the strips after they were cut. The Quilt measures 60x70 and I quilted it with loopy stitches.

Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, named in honor of Spain's King Philip IV, was built during the governorship of Pedro Zapata de Mendoza, Marquis of Barajas and was constructed to repel land attacks, equipped with sentry boxes, buildings for food and weapons storage, and underground tunnels.

A 20-minute walk from downtown, the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is the greatest fortress ever built by the Spaniards in their colonies. The original fort was constructed between 1639 and 1657 on top of San Lazaro Hill. In 1762 extensive expansion was undertaken, and the result is the current bastion. Numerous attempts to storm the fort were mounted, but it was never penetrated. An extensive system of tunnels is connected underground to distribute provisions and facilitate evacuation. The tunnels were all constructed in such a way as to make it possible to hear footsteps of an approaching enemy. Some of the tunnels are open for viewing today. ~ excerpt from wikipedia.

Apparently, in Spain, photographs of Prime Minister Zapatero's daughters, Laura, 16, and Alba, 13, are not published. The Prime Minister and his wife, Sonsoles, want to keep their children out of the public eye. The Spanish Royal family, not the head of government's family, is Spain's First Family. But imagine the PM's surprise, when he realized that a family photo taken with President and Mrs. Obama in New York, was released to the media by the State Department. The Prime Minister apparently did not know that the President of the USA has an official photographer who records the President's official and non-official business.
Official photographs are made available to the media. This was considered an official photograph.

Català: crisis? quina crisis? A l'Estat Espanyol ja hem reinventat el sistema financer per adaptar-lo a la nova conjuntura. Tanquem portes i que soni la música! El primer a afegir-se ha estat el mateix Banco de España.

Post-processat: la complexitat de la foto radica en fusionar varies imatges donat que la lens que portava no permetia mostrar el rètol del Banco de España i els músics de Barrio Candela. Afortunadament, el Potoshop CS3 ho permet fer bastant fàcilment. Tot i així, m'han quedat alguns nyaps.

P.S.: podeu criticar tot el que vulgueu, no m'enfadaré pas i, fins i tot, us podria arribar a fer cas, qui sap ... :-)

English: crisis?, what crisis?. The Spanish Kingdom has reinvented the financial system to adapt it to the new world scenario. Just close dors and let the music sound! The first bank to follow this moto has been the Banco de España (Spanish Central Bank).

Post-processing: the difficult part in this shot has been combining several shots in one because the lens I was carrying wasn't wide enought. Thanks to Potoshop CS3, the task has been quite easy. Nevertheless, there are still some technical imperfections in the shot.

P.S.: feel free to critizise as much as you like, I won't get angry and I might even follow some of your recommendations, who knows ... :-)

Barcelona, Spain: we dove in a dark, but friendly looking bar we found in a back alleyway, Acoma Cafe. One drink turned in to two as we chilled to the Marvin Gay and other assorted soul hits. Was a very nice break and chance to recharge. Hallie said the sangria was “yummy” and Rob had his first taste of Estrella, Spain’s “Budweiser.” The verdict was “not bad.”

Honorable Officials Of Spain:

I am dismayed the "Running of the Bulls" annually features a chaotic rush of bulls through Pamplona streets. I cannot tour any society that condones the senseless brutalization of animals.

I call upon officials to forbid the use of animals in the Festival of San Fermin. In place of old-fashioned stampedes and bullfights, please consider an all-human race that rejoices in the human spirit.

Bulls -- restrained in darkness before goaded into the streets with electrical shocks -- are temporarily unable to see in the bright sun. Running crowds smack the frightened animals with rolled newspapers. Most bulls stumble and collide with walls as they try to navigate the route's jagged corners. They smash bones and hurt themselves during the frenzy.

At night, the animals die in violent bullfights staged to "celebrate" each run. Many tourists lose respect for a culture that promotes animal torment and slaughter as entertainment.

In Spain itself, a 2006 Gallup survey shows 72% of Spaniards are disinterested in bullfights. Barcelona City Council proclaimed Barcelona an anti-bullfighting city in April 2004, with another 38 Catalan municipalities voicing their opposition to bullfighting. The Catalonian government has debated the inclusion of bullfighting in anti-cruelty laws.

Tradition never justifies cruelty. If it did, child labor, slavery, lynching, cannibalism, and foot binding would remain acceptable customs. I urge you to take a stand against bull runs and fights by refusing to permit these blood spectacles in the 21st Century.

Please inform me about any plans to ban the Running of the Bulls and bullfights during the Festival of San Fermin. Thank you for your valuable time and attention.
