Flickr Sound mirror
Tags: mirror   war   technology   air   traces   sound   ww1   defence
This Sound Mirror located near Kilnsea in Humberside (thats Yorkshire to you and me ) was used prior to radar as Britains early air defence warning system . During WW1 they used these to listen for German Botha aircraft and Zepplins flying over the sea to bomb British towns and cities.

A microphone was positioned in front of the dish ....its height was used to gauge the heighth of the aircraft , its angle to the dish gauged the aircrafts bearing .....a crude devise, it did work to a limited degree although the infrastructure and aircraft were not really adequate to enable effective response .

The lessons learned probaly stood the world well when it came to the use of radar against the Nazis during the Battle of Britain.
Perhaps without this early system the effectiveness of the ability to respond to radar would have been lessened and could have resulted in the RAF losing control of the airspace above Britain with dreadful consequences for everyone around the world .

Only 7 of these still remain intact across Britain . they are fast becoming a very rare relic of war.

This is one of my four tattoos. I got it about six weeks ago and i love it. Guitar and music are my life and the number 13 means a lot to me as well. For some it's the unlucky number, but for me it always were a special number.
Well, I wanted the words "Sound Of Truth" instead of the guitar neck because for me the sound of guitars is the most true sound with so many different sides. Music cannot lie.

(The tattoo looks crooked where the strings are, but it's only because i had to turn my arm to make the photo. Actually the tattoo is even.)

The brain relies on receiving accurate information from the eyes. The brain requires clues about depth, shading, lighting and position to help interpret what the eyes see. However, when we look at a two-dimensional image, for example, there is no information about depth for the brain to interpret so it makes assumptions that the object we are looking at must be governed by the rules of perception. Any movement seen in this image, is your brain trying to apply past experiences to make assumptions about
what is seen. Like looking at clouds, what is perceived to be seen, is the combination of inner and outer
vision.

image above: Two veterans of the Workshop recreate some of its famous sounds.

The BBC's Radiophonic Workshop, a pioneering force in sound effects, would have been 50 this month. Ten years after it was disbanded, what remains of its former glory?

Deep in the bowels of BBC Maida Vale studios, behind a door marked B11, is all that's left of an institution in British television history.

A green lampshade, an immersion tank and half a guitar lie forlornly on a shelf, above a couple of old synthesisers in a room full of electrical bric-a-brac.

These are the sad remnants of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, set up 50 years ago to create innovative sound effects and incidental music for radio and television.

The corporation initially only offered its founders a six-month contract, because it feared any longer in the throes of such creative and experimental exercises might make them ill.

Using reel-to-reel tape machines, early heroines such as Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire recorded everyday or strange sounds and then manipulated these by speeding up, slowing down or cutting the tape with razor blades and piecing it back together.

The sound of the Tardis was one sound engineer's front-door key scraped across the bass strings on a broken piano. Other impromptu props included a lampshade, champagne corks and assorted cutlery.

Ten years ago the workshop was disbanded due to costs but its reputation as a Heath Robinson-style, pioneering force in sound is as strong as ever, acknowledged by ambient DJs like Aphex Twin.

Although much of its equipment has long been sold off, every sound and musical theme it created has been preserved. To mark its 50 years, there are plans for a CD box-set.

Here Dick Mills and Mark Ayres, who both worked there, use the surviving equipment to revive four sounds from the past.

Green Lampshade

This was a stroke of genius from Delia Derbyshire, who died in 2001 and famously created the Doctor Who theme tune from Ron Grainer's score.

The magic of Delia Derbyshire's lampshade, recreated by Dick Mills and Mark Ayres

She would hit the tatty-looking aluminium lampshade to create a sound with a natural, pure frequency. After recording it on tape, she would play with it to make the desired sound effect.

For a documentary on the Tuareg people of the Sahara desert, she took the ringing part of the lampshade sound, faded it up and then reconstructed it using the workshop's 12 oscillators to give a whooshing sound, allied to her own voice.

"So the camels rode off into the sunset with my voice in their hooves and a green lampshade on their backs," she once said.

The green lampshade has since gained near-mythical status and Peter Howell, who succeeded Derbyshire in the early 1970s and reworked the Doctor Who theme tune, can see why.

"It's a useful thing to cling on to because everyone knows what a lampshade is because it symbolises the use of domestic objects to produce sounds."

The workshop fascinates his music students today because of all the kit used back then, he says, and its influence is still clearly seen - an advert for a VW Golf that uses only sounds of the car, for example.

"The sampling era we're now in is the next generation of the same principle."

Dalek Voice

The sound that sent youngsters, and many adults, cowering behind sofas was co-created by Mills, a sound engineer who joined the workshop in its first year and left 35 years later.
Creating the voice of the Daleks

"We tried to give the impression that whenever a Dalek spoke, it wasn't speaking like we do, it was accessing words from a memory bank, so they all sound the same - dispassionate, mechanical and retrievable."

He used a centre-tap transformer plugged into the microphone of an actor standing at the side of the set, and the threat in the voice was all in the performance.

Sometimes the tape got played at the wrong speed and the voice came out slightly differently, but the arrival of the EMS VCS3 synthesiser in the late 60s did not signal the end for this tried and tested method.

In other ways, however, the synthesisers changed the way the workshop operated and - despite some resistance by individuals - offered a bigger choice.

Workshop Highlights

Sound effects: Quatermass and the Pit, The Goon Show, Blake's 7, The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Doctor Who Music: Woman's Hour, Tomorrow's World, Blue Peter, John Craven's Newsround, Doctor Who

"Synthesisers provided a wide open pallet of colours and sounds to play with, but you still had to choose what you wanted to do and learn the discipline of this new technological form," says Mills.

"So on the one hand, it was easy but you still had the original difficulty of thinking of the idea in the first place."

Sci-Fi Door Opening

Sci-fi fans will recognise the "swooshing" door from programmes such as Doctor Who and Blake's 7, plus in the odd hotel scene in other programmes.

The workshop's suitcase synth

The suitcase synthesiser was a portable version of the VCS3, useful for jobs out of the studio.

Recalling the early days and influences, Mills says: "We would take a pre-recorded sound effect from the BBC's vast library but treated them to produce cerebral effects. If you wanted a character to appear to be thinking, you got him to read the line and put in a strange echo."

Similar techniques were already used in Europe in "musique concrete".

"They did it for their own investigation and research, but our way of life was we never did anything until a commission.

So all our experimentation and research was taking place in the context of that radio or television programme."

One of Mills' proudest creations was the slimy monster sound, which was him spreading Swarfega cleaning gel on his hands and then slowing down the sound.

And he made the upset tummy of Major Bloodnok in The Goon Show, a colonial officer who liked curry, by using burp sounds and an oscillator to give a violent, explosive gastro-effect. Using contrasting sounds very quickly is a trick in audio comedy.

"We did our own thing in the name of artistic creation. Working here was a bit like surf riding. Every so often a creative wave of energy kept you going until the wave ran out."

Broken Guitar

One pluck of a guitar string became the famous Dr Who bass line. Derbyshire and Mills sped it up and slowed it down to get the different notes, and these were cut to give it an extra twang on the front of every note.

Demonstration of the Radiophonic Workshop's guitar

"It slides up to the note every time if you listen carefully," says Mills. "Delia fabricated the baseline out of two or three lines of tape.

"You'd be scrabbling around the floor saying 'Where's that half-inch of tape I wanted to play on the front of that note?'"

Every sound generated by the workshop and used in radio or television is preserved, partly in thanks to archivist Mark Ayres, who worked there while a student.

He believes one of its greatest legacies is that it made listeners more used to hearing such sounds as part of everyday entertainment and education.

"It led to] the steady integration of experimental sound into popular culture and the placement of such sound into the mainstream rather than it being confined to various strictly academic studios.

"Certainly, much of this took place in parallel with developments elsewhere - The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon for example.

"Later on, the workshop housed a couple of the most advanced computer-based MIDI studios in the world, but by that time competition from the outside world was too great and, under [the BBC's policy] Producer Choice, the workshop could not compete on price and its demise was inevitable."

Flickr Day 220 365/2010 - Sound Mirrors - Dungeness
Tags: heritage   concrete   aircraft   august   structure   dungeness   2010   soundmirrors   earlywarning   nikond300   richardreader
Today there was a guided tour of the Sound Mirrors at Dungeness,

There are three mirrors, built between 1928 and 1930 as part of an acoustic early warning system designed to detect the engine sound of approaching aircraft.
The smallest, the 20 foot mirror dates from 1928. A 'listener' stood on a platform in from of the mirror with a movable sound collector which was connected to a stethoscope.
The 30 foot (1930) used a similar collection process but the listener was in a chamber beneath the dish with the stethoscope connected to a sound collector in the bowl. In both systems it was possible to ascertain the bearing of an incoming aircraft by searching the focal area of the mirror and reading scales on the equipment.
The 200 foot wall is a section of a much larger sphere and is 26 foot high. Completed in mid-1930 this had multiple microphones connected to a control room.

The Sound Mirrors are on a private island in gravel pits and therefore are not generally accessible.

The earphones included with iPhone 4 is nice because of its microphone and controller. However, the sound quality is poor. It's just not good enough for listening music.

I happend have Shure Sound Isolating Earphone with bad wires. So I decided to put them together.

Notice that the cable length is extended unlike other modifications that just swap the units. This is because the proper way for wearing the Shure earphones is to wrap the earphone cord over the top and down the back of the ear.

With this DIY, I just saved hundreds of dollars :-)

Breadboard circuit for Sound Flash Trigger With Delay (Mk I)

My long absence from Flickr has been due to me devoting a lot of my spare time to re-learning electronics and learning how to develop software for microcontrollers.

This prototype circuit was my first attempt to build a sound trigger for my Canon Speedlites -- as I had modified my OC-E2 flash extension cable I was able connect directly to any of my Speedlites.

Unfortunately, I discovered that the timing ICs I was hoping to use (NE555) are just too slow to respond to the sound of a balloon popping. The shortest delay I could get out of them was roughly 2ms which just wasn't fast enough.

So my next move was to use microcontrollers, initial the PIC 16F628A, but I migrated to the AVR ATmega8. The AVR has an open source GCC development environment and the AVR are available here in Portland (Surplus Gizmos on Cornelius Pass just off of Hwy 26).

The circuit has five stages:
1) The audio amplifier using a LM386 OpAmp IC
2) A comparator to convert the amplified audio into a distinct pulse to trigger the timer delay circuit
3) The first timer (NE555 IC) which is the delay part
4) The second timer (NE555 IC) which generates the trigger pulse for the Speedlite
5) The opto-isolator (MOC3020 IC) which triggers the Speedlite, but protects both this circuit and the Speedlite. With this setup I could use an older hot-shoe flash which are notorious for running 300V between the hot-shoe pins.

Like I said, unfortunately this prototype was just too slow, but I learned a lot in the process.

Side-note: Canon Speedlites can't be triggered repeatedly with just an opto-isolater by itself. Due to some quirk in their design you have to add resistor and capacitor in parallel (to each other) to help reset the Speedlite after it is triggered. I used a 1M ohm resistor with a 0.05uF capacitor rated for 600V.

A while back I attempted to get this shot, but completely wimped out regarding how close I got to the train passing at around 40mph....

That being said, this time I had about 30 seconds to change lenses (because I was off shooting macros of driftwood near where this was made) and get completely set up, tripod in place and all, and fire off this one frame in manual mode to get the shot.

The one thing that would take this shot to the next level would be a model in there somewhere getting blasted with gigantic soft box.

The colors in the sky this evening were simply amazing...which I have not seen in some time around here. Fifteen minutes after this shot it began to rain cats and dogs, which has been the typical weather we have been having the last couple weeks...

OK, OK, there *have* been a few sun-breaks in there from time-to-time.

Time to bring on Spring for goodness sake!

This is another one of those images where I could have done with a tripod (2 sec exposure @ f5.8). Instead, I had to jam my camera and hands between some railings to keep steady. All in the name of my art (or somebody else's art in this case!).

Canon 400D, kit lens @ 52mm, ISO200 (because I was worried about noise for some reason), f5.6, 2sec. Processed in PSE 8 with Silver Efex Pro (high-ish contrast B&W conversion).

The concrete sound mirrors, Lade Pit, near Dungeness, Kent. These two 20' and 30' concrete sound mirrors were used experimentally during the 1930's to detect oncomming aircraft. This technology was eventually surpassed by radar. They are now Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The island on which they reside can only be accessed by a locked swing bridge. The number of organised trips to the sound mirrors are limited by CEMEX, the owners of the now disused and water filled gravel pits. Photographed from the swingbridge before crossing over 13/9/09.

“SOUND, LIGHT AND TRAINED BREATHING ARE THE MEDICINES OF TOMORROW”

Recent work on music and sound has revealed several new methods of using it for healing and acceleration of Consciousness. The use of various patterns of sound to induce relaxing and meditative experiences has increased exponentially in the past decade with the development of numerous brain machines. When we are in a relaxed state, our brain is in Alpha mode which means that the brain waves are resonating at a frequency of 7 to 14 cycles per second. Normally most people are in Beta Mode, which means that their brain waves are resonating at 14 to 21 cycles per second. In this state one is usually restless, anxious irritable, hasty etc. Above 21 cycles per second, usually leads to a nervous breakdown. The idea then is to get your brain waves in Alpha mode, which is done, when one observes all the spiritual disciplines already outlined to you. In addition there are electronic methods to switch you into these states.

This is the basis of the brain machines, in order to get you into Alpha mode say 10 beats per second. The brain machine feeds your say left ear with a frequency of 500 cycles per second and the right with 510 cycles per second. The brain subtracts one frequency from the other and resonates at 10 cycles per second, which is in the alpha range; this third phantom frequency is called the “binaural beat”. Sherry Edwards discovered that she could hear certain frequencies coming from people, when she played back these unique notes or frequencies from the persons she heard them from. They healed rapidly; it therefore seemed that the sound she was hearing from these people’s energy fields was their missing frequency.

One unique case she had was a person who was dying from zinc poisoning. Within 15 minutes of being exposed to his key missing frequency his vital signs stabilized. Skeptical of this the doctors turned off the tape and the man went back into relapse getting worse. They then turned on the tape and left it on, after continued exposure to these bioacoustic tapes the excess Zinc was eventually excreted. Interestingly mans hair turned red and wiry, and some people speculated that perhaps the zinc left him through his hair. In another case, Edwards used sonic frequencies based on the atomic weight of calcium and magnesium to accelerate a bone fracture. This was a case where the person’s knee-cap had been totally shattered (into 36 pieces) and had to be completely removed. His tibia was badly sheared and a major artery damaged. With the use of the Edwards sound tape the patient’s pain rapidly disappeared and within 10 weeks was able to walk again but the greatest surprise was that x-rays confirmed that he had grown a NEW KNEE CAP.

There are many such sound healing tapes from different healers.

In the east, each of the chakras have particular notes of music ascribed to it, the basic classical Indian ragas play a significant role in healing and lifting ones level of consciousness.

Similarly in the Chinese system melodies with emphasis on particular elemental notes have been developed to stimulate healing of the various system organs.

She is Vivian (aka Vivi), my sister Nilza's cat.

"OM" is the most often chanted sound among all the sacred sounds on earth. This sound is considered as the sound of the existence.
"OM" is said to be the original primordial creative sound from which the entire universe have manifested.
During meditation, when we chant "Om", we create within ourselves a vibration that attunes sympathy with the cosmic vibration and we start thinking universally. The momentary silence between each chant becomes palpable. Mind moves between the opposites of sound and silence until, at last, it ceases the sound. In the silence, the single thought—Om—is quenched; there is no thought. This is the state of trance, where the mind and the intellect are transcended as the individual self merges with the Infinite Self in the pious moment of realization. It is a moment when the petty worldly affairs are lost in the desire for the universal. Such is the immeasurable power of Om.

Attempted copy of that famous Maxell ad, with noticeable differences.

Submitted to Mission 24 (for Sound ).
This became a chore to get looking right; I'm not happy with the picture, but I got tired of it after a while. I've put notes on most things. I took the picture in ISO 800 to get some grain going, then I sharpened the picture a tad, then put it in black and white.

Fun fact: I thought the brand was Maxwell until a few years ago. I thought it was a typo on my headphones until I checked the internet. Twenty-something years of reading the name incorrectly had me scared.

Sounds like a melody

Its a trick of my mind
To faces bathing in the screenlight
Shes so soft and warm in my arms
I tune it into the scene
My hand are resting on her shoulders
When were dancing away for a while
Oh, were moving, were falling, we step into the fire
By the hour of the wolf in a midnight dream
Theres no reason to hurry, just start that brand new story
Set it alight, were head over heels in love
Head over heels

The ringing of your laughter it sounds like a melody
To once forbidden places well go for a while

Its the definite show
Our shadows resting in the moonlight
Its so clear and bright in your eyes
Its the touch of your sighs
My lips are resting on your shoulder
When were moving so soft and slow
We need the extasy, the jelousy, the comedy of love
Like the cary grants and kellys once before
Give me more tragedy, more harmony and phantasy, my ***d e a r***
And set it alight, just starting that satellite
Set it alight

The sperm whale floats at the surface for ~10', blowing and resting. Then it sounds; this is the only time you see the tail. It all happens in surreal slow motion: the back starts to curve into a graceful arc; the arc rolls forward, carrying the head down and the tail up; and then the tail slides silently beneath the waves. Once down, the whale will remain below on its feeding dive for ~40'.

The underwater topography is what makes Kaikoura special. Just a few km offshore the continental shelf drops precipitously to form Kaikoura Canyon, which channels an upwelling of nutrient-rich waters from the deep ocean to the surface here. Hence there is a rich concentration of sea life, from plankton to fish to pelagic birds all the way up to the top predator and star of the show, the sperm whale. (And did I mention pelagic birds?)

Whale Watch Kaikoura is a Maori-owned, ecofriendly operator, and they did a very good job. I believe they track the whales by low-intensity sonar and spotter plane; at any rate, they have a 95% success rate at finding them. The local whales are familiar with the whalewatch boats and allow them to approach very close. We had 3 sessions with 2 individuals: after the first whale dove we acquired another; then we rejoined the first one when it resurfaced 40' after its first dive.

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

Tom and Jerry
