Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist and theologian who has been considered by many to be the greatest and most influential scientist who ever lived. His monograph Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, laid the foundations for most of classical mechanics. In this work, Newton described universal gravitation and the three laws of motion, which dominated the scientific view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. Newton showed that the motion of objects on Earth and that of celestial bodies is governed by the same set of natural laws: by demonstrating the consistency between Kepler's laws of planetary motion and his theory of gravitation he removed the last doubts about heliocentrism and advanced the scientific revolution. The Principia is generally considered to be one of the most important scientific books ever written, both due to the specific physical laws the work successfully described, and for its style, which assisted in setting standards for scientific publication down to the present time.

This is a great addition to any bobblehead collection. If you're looking for a unique bobblehead, this is the one to own.

Flickr DTN News - SPECIAL REPORT: Schoolboy 'Genius' Solves Puzzles Posed By Sir Isaac Newton That Have Baffled Mathematicians For 350 Years
Tags: germany   dresden   puzzles   mathematicians   schoolboy   sirisaacnewton   specialreport   dtnnews   dtndefensetechnologynews   dtnlogos   shouryyaray
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 17, 2012: A 16-year-old has managed to crack puzzles which have baffled the world of maths for more than 350 years.

Shouryya Ray has been hailed a genius after working out the problems set by Sir Isaac Newton. The schoolboy, from Dresden, Germany, solved two fundamental particle dynamics theories which physicists have previously been able to calculate only by using powerful computers.

His solutions mean that scientists can now calculate the flight path of a thrown ball and then predict how it will hit and bounce off a wall. Shouryya only came across the problems during a school trip to Dresden University where professors claimed they were uncrackable.

'I just asked myself, 'Why not?',' explained Shouryya.

'I think it was just schoolboy naivety. I didn't believe there couldn't be a solution,' he added.
Modest Shouryya began solving complicated equations as a six year old but says he's no genius.'There are other things at school I wish I was better at - football for one,' he said. For years Shouryya has enjoyed what he calls 'intrinsic beauty' of maths.

When he was young, his father, an engineer, began testing his brain by setting him arithmetic problems. After arriving from Calcutta four years ago without knowing any German, Shouryya is now fluent in the language. His intelligence was quickly noted in class and he was pushed up two years in school - he is currently sitting his exams early.Modestly Shouryya has pointed out he has weak points as a mathematician, and says he is not as competent in sport.

This is a reproduction of "Sir Isaac Newton" of 1689 by Godfrey Kneller. The artist was forty-three when he painted Newton who was then aged forty-six. Kneller was the court portraitist for the British kings from Charles II to George I. Newton, of course, was the greatest scientist of his age being the founder of physics, discoverer of Gravity, the Three Laws of Motion, the co-inventor of differential and integral calculus, builder of one of the first reflecting telescopes,. In short he was one of the most influential persons to have ever lived.

Sir Isaac Newton, who discovered gravity, probably had no idea that it would do something sexy to a flip-flop hanging off the right foot of this Latina/Caucasian mix!

Sir Isaac Newton is one of the most world renown names. In physics he is known mainly for his three laws of motion. Before he turned 25 he derived the universal law of gravitation, and he is one of the founders of calculus. He is the greatest mathematicians / physicists to date and his work has shaped so much of what we know today.

The Psychology of how color relates to the body and mind outlines that a child's brain is stimulated more by the black and white contrast than that of color.

Therefore a brightly colored newborn baby's room may need a 'black and white' infusion integrated in the design!

So is it color psychology or eye spectrum discrimination?

Sir Isaac Newton demonstrated that light travels in waves, when he shone white light through a triangular prism and the different wavelengths refracted at different angles, enabling him to see the colors of the rainbow (the spectrum).

When light strikes any colored object, the object will absorb only the wavelengths that exactly match its own atomic structure and reflect the rest - which is what we see.

When light strikes the human eye, the wavelengths do so in different ways ultimately influencing our perceptions, then in the eye's retina they are converted into electrical impulses that pass to the hypothalamus (the part of the brain governing our hormones and our endocrine system).

As we interact in our color speckled modern world, although we are unaware of it, our eyes and our bodies are constantly adapting to these wavelengths of light.

The Wren Library was completed in 1695 under the Mastership of Isaac Barrow, who persuaded his friend Sir Christopher Wren to design it. The building work was carried out under the supervision of a local master mason, Robert Grumbold, who chose exterior stone with a pinkish tinge from a quarry in Rutland; the stone catches the evening sun quite beautifully.

The Library has exquisite classical proportions and maximises space and light having bookcases below window level. The first floor is decorated with limewood carving by Grinling Gibbons and furnished with a series of Roubiliac marble busts of College alumni, including naturalist John Ray and his friend Francis Willoughby, Richard Bentley, Francis Bacon and Sir Isaac Newton. At the far end of the library is a statue by Thorvaldsen of Lord Byron. This was originally intended for Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey, but was refused; Trinity was glad to accept it.

Manuscripts and printed books are kept in the Wren Library and there is also a modern library and reading room, which are not open to visitors. Some of the College's most notable manuscripts are displayed in the Wren Library, including an eighth century copy of the Epistles of St Paul, John Milton's shorter poems in his own handwriting and the original manuscript of Winnie-the-Pooh. The library also holds a small collection of eastern manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Sanskrit and Hebrew.

The library also contains:
About 1250 medieval manuscripts including the great 12th century Eadwine Psalter from Christ Church Canterbury and the 13th century Anglo-Norman Trinity Apocalypse.
750 15th century printed books, the Capell collection of Shakespeariana, many books from the library of Sir Isaac Newton (see John Harrison, The Library of Isaac Newton, Cambridge University Press, 1978), the Rothschild collection of 18th century literature and over 70,000 books printed before 1820

Museum of the Book - The history of letters, the book, letter print and book culture of the Czech lands in the European context.

"The development of the book culture of the Czech lands is demonstrated by the book exhibits – from medieval manuscripts through to old prints to contemporary graphic and book illustration, including samples of underground and exile literature borrowed from the library resources of Libri prohibiti. The exhibition includes the Baroque library of the Capuchin Monastery in Roudnice nad Labem, the library of Mladá Vožice Chateau and the classicist interior and personal library of the Czech historian, Gelasius Dobner, in the original bookcases. The exhibition concludes with the collection of Cubist furniture designed according to Josef Gočár’s plans and the carved furniture of the remarkable artist, Josef Váchal, together with a small exhibition of his graphic works. The reconstructions of the medieval Scriptorium, a printing room of the 16th century and samples of printing machines complete the overall picture."

image above: A view of the moat in 1950. ASDA now occupies the top fields.

All you'll find there today is a pub and the remains of what might have once been a moat. But at Barrs Court, centuries ago, stood a mansion now vanished without trace. There is very little left of historic Barrs Court, on the outskirts of Longwell Green, the ancient Newton mansion which once lorded it over this part of Kingswood Chase - or even of the farmhouse which was later constructed from the remains of the manor and its outbuildings in the mid-18th century.

All that could be seen some 30 years ago, were some old walls, a pile of rubble and the remains of what could possibly have once been a moat. There was also some evidence of two fishponds and a dam, portions of which survived until 1978. But the once-proud mansion, mentioned in glowing terms by the 16th-century antiquary Leland, seemed to have mysteriously vanished without trace. The early history of Barrs Court - about which very little is documented - stretches back to 1340 but in 1483 Sir John Barre owned it, as well as much of the land for miles around, and it was from his family that it derived its name.

It was then a typical small medieval manor house, with a great hall, a kitchen and three chambers. When Sir John and his wife died without leaving any heirs, it passed to the Newton family who, after beautifying and enlarging the house, made it their principal home for some 200 years. The family, it's said, were related to that brilliant scientific mind, Sir Isaac Newton. In 1540, when the antiquary Leland visited, he described the house as a 'Fayre Olde Mannar Place of stone'.

The mid-17th century saw the heyday of the moated mansion - with Sir John Newton owning several nearby manors, as well as the Court, by intermarriage. By now the place would be looking more like nearby Siston Court, not far from Pucklechurch, which still exists and consists of three wings arranged around a deep forecourt with turrets in the internal angles. Complete with courtyard, stables, orchards and gardens plus chapel, music gallery and elaborate fireplaces, Barrs Court would have been a very impressive place.

A moat, constructed more for show than defence and complete with drawbridge and gatehouse, surrounded the mansion. Sometime in the 1650s a 95 acre 'park' - complete with wall - was added, along with the two fishponds already mentioned, a rabbit warren (a Connigre is mentioned as far back as 1444 ) and a dovecote (actually a pigeonhouse or 'Columbrac') which all supplied fresh meat for the household throughout the winter months. These type of additions to an estate were very common right up until the 18th century.

The kidney-shaped outline of this 'park' was, until recently, traceable on the ground. Sir John, who died in 1699 and is buried in Bitton Church, was written of at the time as 'a most loving husband, careful father, faithful friend, pious, just, prudent, charitable, salient, and beloved of all'. Born in 1626 and married for 55 years (his wife lived to be 85) he had four sons and 13 daughters, several of whose tombs can also be found in Bitton church. Tombs, monuments and chantry chapels to the Newton family can also be found in Yatton and East Harptree, where they had other houses, and in Bristol Cathedral, where there is still a Newton chapel. In the 1660s the estate passed to other, but completely unrelated, Newtons, who came from Lincolnshire.

But after a few generations they tended to live elsewhere and left the house in the care of stewards. In the 1700s the mansion passed into the hands of Sir Michael Newton, who married Margaret, the Countess of Coningsby from Herefordshire, and they had one son John, who died young. Legend has it that he was killed when he was dropped down the stairs by his nurse, who claimed that she had been frightened by an ape! It was around the time of Margaret's death, in the 1740s, that Barrs Court was utterly destroyed.

It's said that it was decreed in her husband's will that if there were no heirs the mansion was to be razed to the ground. A much more likely explanation is that the house was looking more and more old fashioned and had reached the end of its useful life. A document from the late 1700s described it as 'an old house, marked by a moat with a high wall all round the park. Niches were filled with collossus leaden statues.

The hall was large and lofty, and richly-carved. 'There was gilt all round the fireplace, and a shelf supported by two figures. It was paved with black and white marble squares - there was a musicians gallery and a chapel. It had square-stoned mullioned windows, and there was a drawbridge. There was a porter's lodge, and a large and a small gateway'.

Other old documents tell us that reapers on the estate received twopence per day and there is a mention of Monday lands, referring to the day when tenants worked for their landlord. Among them was the Abbot of Keynsham, who no doubt sent his lay brothers to till the fields. There is another manuscript belonging to the Newtons which contains a record of rents paid by the tenants from 1729 to 1740. During the 18th century a large farmhouse, constructed from the remains of the mansion, grew up near the site.

This thrived until the 1920s, after which it became run down. It was demolished in 1950. So, is there anything left to see of historic Barrs Court? Well, two acres of the old estate have now been designated as an ancient monument, and nearly all of this is surrounded by a wel - preserved moat, fed by a spring and a small tributary of the Warmley Brook, but there is little to see.

Damaged over the years, one corner of the moat has even been filled in. The 1980s pub on the site - built up from one of the original outbuildings - takes its name from the ancient mansion. The Newton's 95-acre estate is now covered by 1970s and 1980s housing. Nevertheless, Barrs Court Moat - looked after by its 'Friends', a conservation group - remains the single most important mediaeval relic to be found within the borders of the old Kingswood Forest.

The Great Gate of Trinity College, Cambridge. Through the archway, behind its curtain of creeper, a glimpse of the Master's Lodge. The Gate was built in a series of interrupted stages starting about 1490. After 1505, if I have understood my Pevsner aright, work was not resumed until 1518-19. The gates ...the same ones we see here... were paid for in 1522-3. The first reference to a "great tower" over the gate is from 1528-9, when the upper floor was commenced.
The tympanum above the pedestrian entrance contains carved tracery. Above, an heraldic ogee frieze within blind arches. Then two storeys of coupled three-light windows. In the centre of the first-floor pair, a "wretched" (Pevsner) statue of Henry VIII, dating from 1615. The other side, which I was unable to inspect, is apparently of brick.
The late natural philosopher Sir Isaac Newton had rooms to the right of the gate. Nearby grows an apple tree said to descend from the famous tree in Newton's Lincolnshire garden. In Cambridge an almost Dutch level of bicycle usage obtains.

Sir. Isaac Newton (25 December/4 January 1642/3 – 20/31 March 1727) is most known for calculus and gravity.

I think this is the best picture of him.

Homage to Newton
1985
signed & numbered 5/8

from the base-plate:

In the 17th century, Sir Isaac Newton discovered the law of gravity. Legend tells us that the origin of this fundamental physical law was initiated by the falling of an apple, represented in the present work by the ball falling from the right hand.

Dali takes the liberty to go even further in paying homage to Newton by opening up the torso of the figure and suspending the heart to indicate 'open-heartedness'. The open head indicates an 'open mind'. These are two necessary qualities for the discovery of natural laws as well as success for all human endeavours.

Sir Isaac Newton, (4 January 1643 – 31 March 1727) was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, and alchemist, regarded by many as the greatest figure in the history of science.[2] His treatise Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, described universal gravitation and the three laws of motion, laying the groundwork for classical mechanics.
When Newton saw an apple fall, he found, in that slight startle from his contemplation, ‘tis said, a mode of proving that the earth turn’d round in a most natural whirl, called gravitation; and this is the sole mortal who could grapple, since Adam, with a fall, or with an apple.
