Sid Waddell was a bit of an oddity. A history graduate in a sport not generally associated (perhaps unfairly) with high intellect, he was wont to combine esoteric historical and cultural references with working men's club banter. One thing is for sure - Waddell had an incredible enthusiasm for darts and in his trademark, often unintelligible, super fast Geordie accent he was absolutely committed to conveying the excitement of darts. And therein, for me, lies the rub. I don't find darts an exciting sport. Gripping. Thrilling. Dramatic. Tense - sometimes unbelievably so. But not exciting. For me it's a sport of thud, sweat and beers. The raucous tumult would always be punctuated by complete, almost reverential, silence whilst the players were at the oche. Now, it's a bit more pantomime as we have the era of arena darts. There's nothing wrong with it, but it is tangibly different, and you just can't keep 20,000 people silent - particularly if they're all a bit pissed. Waddell's near maniacal style suits this new mould very well, but for me it can come across as a bit like Murray Walker trying to commentate on golf. Nevertheless, his quotes are absolutely hilarious and a joy to read, and the man was a true character in a world of sanitised broadcasting that is becoming increasingly bereft of them. I'll miss knowing that he's there. RIP.
