St David's Day, Llandudno Tags: sea   wales   pier   welsh   llandudno   stdavidsday   northwales   saintdavid    Saint David's Day (Welsh: Dydd Gŵyl Dewi) is the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and falls on the 1st of March each year. The first day of March was chosen in remembrance of the death of Saint David. Tradition holds that he died on that day in 569. The date was declared a national day of celebration within Wales in the 18th century. Saint David's Day is not a national holiday in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Similarly in the United States of America, it has regularly been celebrated, although it is not an official holiday. It is invariably celebrated by Welsh societies throughout the world with dinners, parties, eisteddfodau (recitals and concerts). Many Welsh people wear one or both of the national emblems of Wales on their lapel to celebrate St. David: the daffodil (a generic Welsh symbol which is in season during March) or the leek (Saint David's personal symbol) on this day. The leek arises from an occasion when a troop of Welsh were able to distinguish each other from a troop of English enemy dressed in similar fashion by wearing leeks. The association between leeks and daffodils is strengthened by the fact that they have similar names in Welsh, Cenhinen (leek) and Cenhinen Pedr (daffodil, literally "Peter's leek"). The colour yellow has association with both the daffodil and the flag of Saint David which is a yellow cross on a black background. Mother's Day had a different meaning for us this year for obvious reasons and deep in my heart I didn't feel much about celebrating it, but I couldn't let this day pass unnoticed either. We used to buy lots of flowering garden plants for ma for Mother's Day, her favorite were Fuchias and Geraniums, and it would be the first trip to the nursery in the season for us. But this year everything was different. I hadn't had eyes for the garden ever since the growing season started, I couldn't care less, and let the weeds take over, it was a mess... To honor ma and make a start in clearing the garden we decided to visit the nursery after all and find plants we used to buy for my mother, old fashioned flowering plants in bright colors and dress our terrace with them. It was a nice sunny day, potting plants and pulling weeds was a therapeutical way to give a new meaning to Mother's Day. The whole place cheered up, as did my mood. I hadn't noticed the Columbines blooming before, the Peonies budding and the Strawberries who were hiding under the Ground Elder... what an eye opener! I took this shot while Paul and Foppe were enjoying a much deserved rest after all the work and we were satisfied with our new interpretation of Mother's Day. Unfortunatly, the man was convinced that I had taken a picture of his children and started to behave agressively. He started boasting about portrait rights and when we finally just walked away, he followed us around the Queen's Day market for quite some time. Regarding the shot: This is one of the first photos of Cherry and the chicks this year. Free is on the left, Style is still sleepy, having just hatched. I haven’t gotten as many shots of the chicks this year as I expected to mostly because of the drama with Classic’s foot, his rescue, etc. I’m just glad they are all alive and doing well. I have to wish Cherry a Happy Mother’s Day too. She did a great job of taking care of two chicks on her own while Classic was in rehab. They are weathered and I love that because it gives them character, they are the hands of a man who has spent his life working hard. My dad was a farmer for much of my growing up years and then in my mid teens a long hull truck driver. The farming business fell apart because the price of beef was so low and my parents lost the farm and my dad had to do something else to provide for his family and so trucking it was. It wasn’t necessarily his first choice for a new career, but it’s what he could do even though it meant he’d be away from his family during the week and only home on the weekends. And even though it probably scared him to step out into something new, he did it because he knew he had to, he had a family to provide for. My dad is a man of faith, that’s why for this image I wanted his hands to be holding a Bible. I was raised in a Christian home and am so grateful for that, I’m grateful for that foundation. Life was not always perfect but no life really is and we learn and grow in the families that we are raised in. I can still remember my dad teaching me how to drive on the back roads, that must have been nerve racking :-) And then when I got my licence anytime I went any where he would always say “make sure you check the oil,” that was his way of showing he cared. And though now I am older and have a family of my own, he is always willing to help where he can and I am thankful for that. And I think as I get older I see my dad in a different light, I think it’s like I see more of him in how he interacts with others or how he shares his heart with people. My dad has been helping out with the Friendship Group at our Church for many years. The Friendship Group is a group of individuals who are mentally challenged and so my dad is paired up with one of those individuals and every Monday night they get together to hang out. And each Christmas they put on a beautiful Christmas pageant, I still remember the first one we went to, our youngest son Matthew was so touched by it. Matthew was about 10 and on the way home he was saying how it was so nice that people in wheel chairs and people who had bad stuff happen to them could still be involved a play. And so today we remember and think of our fathers, men who have given their lives for their families. Men who have sacrificed, men who trudge out day after day into the work force in order to provide for their families. Dad, thanks for all that you have given and all that you are. So what’s Saint Valentine’s Day all about and why do we mark its occasion every February 14? That’s hard to pin down, as there are many different stories as to the origins of Valentine’s Day, but like many of the holidays we observe, Valentine’s Day has its roots in paganism. Actually, hundreds of years before the Church altered the day of love in an attempt to rid it of its pagan roots, Romans practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February commemorating young men's rite of passage to the god Lupercus. The young men would draw names of teenage girls from a box and whomever the boy chose would be his companion for the remainder of the year. The Church, of course, didn’t like the pagan festival and so Pope Gelasius ordered a slight change in the celebration. He did so by filling the box with the names of saints instead of girls and allowing both men and women to draw from the box. The game was to emulate the ways of the saint for the remainder of the year. The Church then found a patron saint by the name of Bishop Valentine for people to celebrate instead of Lupercus. Bishop Valentine was sent to jail and executed after Claudius II (270 AD) found out he was performing secret marriages. You see, Claudius banned marriage to preserve the number of single men to be soldiers. Claudius, so the story goes, believed that single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine disagreed with Claudius and performed secret weddings until he was found out. He was executed on February 14. It was during his time in jail that he wrote his lover a note and signed it, “From Your Valentine.” And that is how we came to celebrate. Generally the parade is about agriculture, very important in the area in which live, and the parade includes a great deal of farming equipment, both modern and antique, including tractors of every make and model, even one old steam-powered monster, but the parade includes every other kind of conveyance known to mankind. There were people on foot, on bicycles and unicycles, pushing shopping trolleys, riding their lawnmowers, on wagons, horse, carriages, pedal taxis, semis (articulated lorries in the UK), garbage trucks, cars, both modern and antique, motorcycles, a huge papier-mache bee, wooden rocking animals and people of every kind. There were high-school bands, color guards, ballet dancers, cheerleaders, politicians (too many of those), and dairy Queens. Nearly every business in the area was represented in some fashion and the parade included churches, farm equipment dealers, tradesmen, the checkout girls from the local grocery store pushing shopping trolleys, radio stations, and political organizations, even the local Teaparty. There were people walking in support of different causes and carrying banners and signs - a little bit of everything. This is a picture of one of the many horse drawn wagons that were part of the parade. There were many riders on horseback as well, and they were all followed by small groups of "pooper scoopers." Everytime I hold her in any sort of silly way she says "I got a baby!" lol Silly girl. I became a mom March 12th 2008 to my beautiful baby girl, Leilani Kiana. I had an easy pregnancy, never once got morning sickness (just lots of headaches). Birth was painfree for the most part (gotta love epidurals :D). She weighed 7lbs 2oz and was 19 inches long. Her ambilical cord was wrapped around her neck 3 times, but she came out happy and healthy. Now she's 2 years old and so much fun to be around. She is full of personality. I love everyday I get to spend with my daughter. I'm just rambling. . . Anyway, I'm a proud mommy. And I hope all you other moms have a great day! My creative juices feel severely stunted right now and this was quite a struggle. My original plan was to make two of the same card (no time for two originals!) but I wasn't sure that I liked the script background or punched circle here, so I modified it in the second version. But after sleeping on it, I think I might not look as bad as I thought? Anyway, this was first inspired by Lin to do an emboss/resist technique. She uses vintage text wonderfully, too, so I decided to stamp the Italian script to create a subtle text background here. Card base: I distressed a piece of ivory cs with shabby shutters and broken china. Clear embossed the Three Ferns, then distressed with walnut stain for an emboss/resist. Used Jennifer McGuire's tip from her Thinking Inking class on TwoPeas to do the watermark-looking script in the background. I inked up the Italian Poetry with Versamark, then spritzed water on it and stamped it onto the distressed cs to create the watermarkift off color. Layered (blue) piece of cs: I took a smaller piece of ivory cs, stamped the Italian Poetry Background in shabby shutters, then clear embossed the Three Ferns. Distressed with broken china for emboss/resist and adhered to card base. I punched a circle on the front, used a circle mask to distress the card inside, then stamped sentiment in broken china. Added string & button and popped up the sentiment. String is inspired by none other than Lucy. :) Thanks for looking! Clockwise from the far left rear, we have Anacampseros rufescens (turns red to purple when exposed to bright light, the object of this photo with its air roots), Crassula argentea compacta (Miniature jade plant, turns reddish when exposed to cooler temperatures), Sedum hispanicum "Blue carpet" (you can barely see it from this angle-- it's a ground cover), Pleiospilos nelii (AKA Split rock, Living rock, etc-- the answer to this mystery object), Sempervivum calcareum (Hens n' Chicks, houseleek), and another blue carpet sedum. I chose a lot of succulents that can turn red under the right circumstances to allow for a mix of red & green plants-- mom's favorite colors. The day is marked with a lot of activities for children. But the fact remains that only a section of the country’s children actually have an opportunity to celebrate their existence. Schools organize events and activities that their students thoroughly enjoy, but there is an entire population of young ones that are left ignored on this special day – the downtrodden street children. Instead of celebrating it with pomposity in schools and clubs and hotels, why not bring a difference into the lives of children who are unprivileged. While celebrating being a child, the fortunate ones should be reminded about their good fortune to have all that they are endowed with, while there are others who can barely feed or clothe themselves. Thus, while this day was globally instituted to provide children with basic Rights, maybe one can make a difference to a child’s life by doing something special. Parties and celebrations happen all the time, but how about taking the fortunate children to homes that shelter street children and have them befriend those kids, donating clothes, toys, stationery, books, etc. Another way of celebrating this day differently would be to have your children, whether as teacher or parent, organize a party for some underprivileged children. In fact, if this is done in every neighbourhood, imagine how many smiles there will be across the nation. Beck's now on a very large farm in upstate New York, and no longer has to defend the property from the foot, bike, and car traffic, the neighbor's kids, or the UPS and FedEx men. A note added a couple of months after this was take: In fact, as we discovered more and more each day we had Beck, the environment we have is too busy and stimulating for him and his pure-bred nature. In fact, the difference in the poses of the two dogs, the shelter dog mix on the left and pure-bred border collie on the right, is indicative. He needed a large, rural farm where he would be happy putting his natural instincts to work, rather than Beck and us trying to restrain them when guests, neighbors, the post man, bicyclist, and others came onto our property. Three months after we got him, we drove to the New York and returned him to the border collie rescue operation where we got him. It was a tough decision. He was a great dog to us in so many ways, but fortunately he's now on a real farm in upstate New York where everyone in the family is having a great time. Recent Updated: 6 years ago - Created by Yatzi - View Copyright and permission to use should be sought to the author - Yatzi Valentine's Day Dinner Tags: cheese   dinner   bread   wine   honey   valentinesday   mostarda    Valentine's Day Dinner was simple but spectacular, made up of some special treats: Bread - Italian Feather Loaf, from James Beard's classic "Beard on Bread" Wine - French table wine, Anjou-Villages Brissac, we purchased on a trip when we first started dating years ago Mostarda di Fichi - fig mostarda brough back from Vinci, Italy Miele con Frutta - honey with strawberry brought back from Ripatransone, Italy (bought from this guy) Organic Olive Oil - brought back from Vinci, Italy Cheese - a hard Italian cheese to go with the mostarda, and a blue veined Brie to go with the honey Carmelized Walnuts - to go with everything We were supposed to have fresh lemon-pepper angel hair with artichoke-lemon pesto, but we gorged ourselves on treats and didn't feel like we needed more. Being naughty and having no vegetables is the best part of Valentine's Day. I was trying to find a photo of the pair together and this was the best I could find. D hates my camera and consequently most of my photos are from the hip and me trying to be discreet about it. With her dad A can do anything. It amazes me the risks she will take and the things she will try knowing her dad is there to "save" her. She's fearless as long as dad's around. D is working this Father's Day... he always works on Sundays but at least is off at 5:00. I picked up some really good ginormous New York Steaks and am grilling him up some steak, shrimp, red potatoes, broccolli and corn on the cob (well corn for me since he doesn't really care for corn). Will probably look a little something like this from the 4th Last Year. I was gonna fry him some oysters (one of his faves) but this pregnancy they gross me out and I've always heard that you shouldn't eat oysters in months without the letter R. Plus since i've been sick and preety busy I haven't been cooking too much and we're preety simple like that. They do say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach right. Why? Well, it had been a long week at work and a busy weekend and whilst Nick and I were going to celebrate this day I asked him the night before to make sure he hadn't bought me something because I didnt have the time to. He replied "no". So, I thought great, we'll have dinner and have some fun at the chocolate appreciation class (my X'mas present fr Nick). But ofcourse, Nick had to make me look like the bad girlfriend becasue he got me these beautiful long stem roses - boxed and delivered to my work place... so with a rather red face I was very embarassed in front of my workmates but also extremely happy. (Also, it made me realise that he is good at lying with that poker face of his.) You're the best!!! He's 75, but doesn't look it does he?? View On Black Last year, I wrote an entry in my blog called "Accolades for My Superhero Dad". If you'd like to read it, please come to my page (the article is highlighted on the right hand side of the blog section): 360.yahoo.com/painting4jesus Dad posed next to the lion, because he said, "I'm a Leo". I wanted a better background though, so I isolated him and leo and placed them in front of another section of the Cummer garden. I wanted him to stand out but still look part of the picture, so I used different blending layers for the background and dad, adding paint filters and then unifying them with a texture (photo of an old book cover). The frame is made from a photo of a hand-tooled leather album given to me by my daughter. All photos mine. I'm blessed to have such a great dad! Happy Father's Day everyone!!
