Dried is the topic for Macro Mondays, and I've had this acorn-like thing sitting in a little pot on my desk for at least a year, waiting for an excuse to photograph it, so it's safe to say it's thoroughly dried out. I picked up the dead, dried out leaves in our back yard.

This is a composite of two images that I Created for the 25th Magnificent Manipulated Masterpieces Challenge
Source image with thanks to ~Brenda Starr~.

I kept only the sky in Brenda's source image and replaced the foreground with a seascape taken from the Marin Headlands that I had in my archives. I then blended the two images in PSE 11, Topaz Adjust and Topaz B&W Effects 2.1. I was surprised at how much detail Topaz was able to recover in the cliff on the left, which appeared as a stark black silhouette in the original (see it in the comments below).

Flickr Our Mail Box Eagle, In All Its Grungy Glory
Tags: mailbox   eagle   macromondays   rogerjohnson
My first thought, when I saw that the Macro Mondays topic was Mail boxes, was how the heck do you make a macro, or even a close-up, out of a mail box? So, I took a look at the battered old mail box that has been hanging on the front of our house next to the front door for something over 50 years and noticed this eagle on the front of it. Sure, I'd seen the eagle every day of my life for the 46 years we've lived here, but I never paid any attention to it ~ sort of like in one eyeball and out the other... So, when the topic came up, I didn't go, "aha, I know just what I'm going to photograph." This eagle came as a pleasant surprise and undoubtedly saved me from passing up this week's topic entirely because I sure didn't know what else I could find that would fit the topic.

Tags: downunderchallenge   rogerjohnson   sliderssunday
This is a composite I put together in PSE 11 for Down Under Challenge #667. The challenge image of two empty chairs was provided by OR_U (see below).

The two laughing people are my wife and her brother, reminiscing about the good ol' days back on the farm. In the original, they were sitting in two rocking chairs in our living room that were positioned almost exactly the same as OR_U's chairs, so all I had to do was pick each one up individually and plunk them down in the two new chairs. They were a near perfect fit.

Flickr April Showers
Tags: flowers   35mm   jasmine   raindrops   rogerjohnson   nikon35mmf18
At last, a little bit of rain. We had torrential rains in November & December that set records in some areas, and then record or near record drought during the peak of what was supposed to be our rainy season: January, February and March. Our local reservoirs are in good shape, but the Sierra snow pack, which supplies most of California's water is mighty thin, and there's not much hope for more precipitation, since summer time is normally rainless in these parts.

The fence along the southern border of our property is solidly covered with these sweet smelling jasmine, and when we open our windows in the morning, their scent drifts through our entire house (one advantage of owning a small house...).

I took this shot with my little 35mm f1.8 lens, a sweetheart of a lens which I, sadly, hardly have any use for. It sure performed nicely here, though.

Okay, since I know you believed me, in all fairness, and to avoid a worldwide panic, I suppose I should fess up to the truth... This "UFO" is actually the metal shade on a small, high intensity reading lamp, and I put this together for Macro Mondays. Today is April Fools Day, and the Macro Mondays topic is "Fooled You."

I built this fence about 25 years ago along a walkway that runs along the side of our house to a rear entrance. Split rails have always been my favorite kinda fences, and when I was going through a lumber yard one day and saw a stack of cedar posts and rails, I couldn't resist buying a bunch and trying my hand at building one. It's still holding up good as new.

This is a composite of two images: one of my wife Sammy, taken in 1965, and one of

The reason she fits so perfectly on this scooter is, when I photographed her, she was sitting on our white, 1965 Vespa scooter, which was positioned exactly the same as this blue scooter. The theme for Macro Mondays is Wood. This is a tiny section of the beautifully grained wood stock on my Winchester Model 12 trap gun.

Today, plastic stocks are becoming increasingly more popular, and I'm well aware of advantages plastic may have over wood, namely strength, resistance to weather and cost. However, a couple of features plastic stocked guns definitely do not possess are beauty and pride of ownership. Just take a look at the Model 12 pictured in the first comment below and picture it with a black or camo plastic stock. No comparison; I wouldn't own one even if it was given to me.

Flickr Spilled Popcorn
Tags: macro   popcorn   105mmmicronikkor   rogerjohnson   ccmphiddenathome
The theme for Closer and Closer Macro Photography is "Hidden at Home," and it was suggested that we look around the house and check the floor, among other places, to find hidden treasures, or trash, as the case may be. So, I looked down, and sure enough, there was my subject: a piece of popcorn right next to my rocker (I never have learned how to get all the popcorn into my mouth...). The CCMP group is adamant that macros posted to the group pool must be true macros, or at least 1:2 (1/2 life size); so to be on the safe side, I attached a Nikon 6t close-up diopter to my 105mm Micro Nikkor lens, which, when combined, can produce 2:1 images (double life size on the sensor). For lighting, I laid a Nikon SB 600 flash on the floor next to the popcorn and triggered it remotely via the D90's commander feature.

The only problem with this project was, I'm nearly 80 years old, and crawling around on the floor and going through contortions to get into position while trying to manually focus the camera ain't quite as easy as it used to be. In fact, when it came time to get back up off the floor, I damn near had to call 911...`~'

This is a composite I put together for Down Under Challenge #657. The original challenge image of the splash is mine.

I'm glad no one was around to witness what I'm sure would have been a ridiculous sight of me trying to get a shot of the top of my head in hopes of coming up with an image that I could fit convincingly into the splash. I had to get both my hand and my head into the frame, while holding the camera backwards, one-handed, over my head and blindly punching the shutter button. It would have been easier with a little point 'n' shoot camera, but try that some time with a Nikon D90 with an 18-200mm lens attached...

Flickr An Oldie (Me) Going on Liberty in Hawaii, 1956
Tags: vintage   hawaii   kaneohe   rogerjohnson   magnificentmanipulatedmasterpieces
This is a self-timer shot that I took of myself with my Kodak Retina II-a at the Marine barracks, Kaneohe, Hawaii, and I question whether I actually wore this outfit on liberty in Honolulu. I'm not even sure why I owned a jacket and tie while stationed there, except that, when this was taken, my enlistment had less than a year to go, and I remember being all fired up over getting out of the Marines and starting college on the GI Bill; so, maybe I was just getting prepared well in advance...

By the way, going on liberty consisted of taking a 50¢ taxi ride into Honolulu on Friday afternoons, getting a room in the Armed Services YMCA for $1.00 a night, shooting my way up and down Hotel Street in the many shooting galleries that lined the street back then, taking a bus to Waikiki Beach and wandering through the lobby of the Royal Hawaiian and on out to the beach, where I spent part of my days, and finally returning to the base on Sunday evening. My pay was $126 a month, $40 of which I sent home to a savings account, leaving me with $86 for a month's worth of fun in Hawaii. Tough duty I know, but hey, somebody had to do it...

The original color version of this was so bad, it wasn't worth trying to rescue, so I ran the image through Topaz B&W Effects and am very pleased with this vintage look.

Created for 20th Magnificent Manipulated Masterpieces Challenge. The topic is Vintage

Tags: minimalism   hollyberries   macromondays   rogerjohnson   minimalistmacro   vibrantmonimalism
Vibrant Minimalism is the topic for Macro Mondays.
I placed these holly berries on a small blue corner of a Christmas card, set my 105mm Micro Nikkor lens at f2.8 to throw everything around the berry out of focus, and bounced the flash off the ceiling to get this shot. A simple set up, no fancy lighting, and, other than a bit of tweaking of the RAW image in ACR, the image required almost no post processing ~ about as close to SOOC as any image I've ever posted on Flickr..

I hate to tell you how much screwing I had to do to get this shot... The theme for Macro Mondays is Motion Blur, so I charged up the dead battery on my power screwer, set the camera on a tripod and the self timer to 2-second delay and started screwing. I adjusted the shutter speed on each of many shots so I'd have a good variety to choose from, and, though there were several close contenders, this is the one I felt showed the screwing motion the best.

Here Roma is lazying around in our garden in the warm 78° sunshine we've been enjoying lately. The "bandage" that she's wearing is two of my undershirts that we put over her to keep her from scratching at her stitches. She's healing quickly, and every morning, at the time we'd normally be heading out for the dog park, she looks expectantly at us and clearly is wondering why we're not going. It won't be long, but we want to make sure she is sufficiently healed before we turn her loose to romp among her friends.

At the rate Google's going, it won't be long before they're in our bedroom... This shot had a little help from Topaz Simplify 4, but it's pretty much SOOG (Straight out of Google).

I realize you can't see much of our home because of all the birch trees in front, most of which we planted in 1992 as tiny babies. The two birch trees on the left were there when we bought the property, and they sprouted lots of baby birches all over the yard; so we dug up the babies, nursed them along and ended up planting over 45 of them on our tiny 6,600 square foot lot. As you can see, they all thrived (most are in the back yard) and keep our home nice and shady in the summer, while letting the western sun in in the winter. I always wanted to live in the woods, and this is as close as I could get...`~'

Tags: fence   digitalpainting   rogerjohnson   fencedfriday   topazsimplify4
Way back in "The Good Ol' Days," folks made do with the materials at hand and didn't require fancy, precisely milled fence posts, if that's what these are. I expect at some time there was wire stretched between these posts, or maybe they were just stakes to let others know someone had laid claim to land on one side or the other of this line. But now only these remnants remain, serving as wonderful photo ops for those of us who wonder about what went on before.

This is a digital painting, created with the just released Topaz Simplify 4.

We grew up during the war years, when absolutely nothing was wasted and everything was saved until it totally fell apart, and 70 years later, my wife Sammy hasn't changed a bit. So, she still wears this quite serviceable(?) hat while gardening (in the back yard only...) and insists it still has quite a long life ahead of it. She says the hat's one real advantage is, when she sits in her garden chair, or lies in the hammock, she can lay her head back without the brim getting in the way, and she really loves a hat that's well ventilated. At least it keeps the sun out of her eyes... However, frugal though she may be, I doubt this hat has more then three or four years of useful(?) wear left ahead of it... I would love to have posted a shot of her wearing it, but if I did, a half century of wedded bliss might suddenly become a lot less blissful...`~'

The topic for Macro Mondays is Lit by Candlelight. I tried lighting this nut with the candle outside of the picture frame, but the resulting images could have been lit by flash, flashlight, or any other directional light source, and I wanted something that clearly fit the the candlelight theme. So, I included the votive candle in the frame, which, needless to say, created a bit of an exposure dilemma. I more or less resolved the dilemma by creating two RAW exposures from the single image (one exposure for the flame and one for the nut), and then blending the two in PSE9.

The blonde is my wife Sammy, taken 16 years ago on her 60th birthday in a much more comfortable setting than this...`~'

I used several Topaz Adjust presets on the background (source) image to try to add some interest to a rather drab setting.

Flickr An Estonian Vodka Bottle - The photo may be mediocre, but it's a fun and interesting story, so please read on.
Tags: bottle   estonia   vodka   rogerjohnson   sliderssunday
This vodka bottle has quite a history. When little 6-year old Mairi (now my wife Sammy) and her brother and parents were frantically racing across war torn Europe in 1940 at the very beginning of World War II, while escaping from the communists who had taken over their country of Estonia (her father was Counsel General to the U.S.), they could carry only a limited number of possessions, and this bottle of vodka was one of those treasured possessions. And they decided the bottle was so special, they would open it only on some very special occasion.

That special occasion arrived 20 years later in 1960, when they decided to celebrate the engagement of their daughter Mairi to yours truly. There were several Estonians in attendance, including some very prominent friends from Venezuela, who had also escaped the Soviets in Estonia; and of course, I was there, the only non-Estonian in the bunch. So, when the moment for a toast arrived, the vodka was poured into the little shot glasses you see here. However, as you can see, it isn't a very big bottle, and by the time it got to me, it was running dry, so when my turn came to have my glass filled, my future father-in-law set the celebratory Estonian bottle down and filled my glass with Smirnoff!

By the way, I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression - I loved Sammy's parents, and we had a wonderful relationship throughout the years. However, that particular bottle of Estonian vodka was too precious to be consumed by this Irish/German/English/Swedish mongrel, when it became apparent that there might not be quite enough to go around, even if I was one of the "celebrities" being toasted.

The map reference shows the bottle's origin, not where the photo was taken, since, given the sad state of geographical knowledge today, I expect there are very few U.S Flickrites who even know where Estonia is..

For the Slider Sunday group, way too much sliding went into this image to try to describe the steps I took. Suffice it to say, I took this photo over 50 years ago, and even this image is far better than what I started out with.

....................................................................................................................................................
For images and stories of this nature, I have put together a set called Our Life Story, depicting our life together over the past half century plus and containing over 250 images and descriptions which, for the most part, are in chronological order. Check it out and let me know what you think of it.

Todaay's topic for Macro Mondays is Bottle, and since a bottle is too large an object to make anything even approaching a macro out of it, I chose to photograph this small portion of the label on a Grey Goose vodka bottle. And, no, I didn't buy the Grey Goose myself, not at $48 a bottle. It was a Christmas gift from one of our sons years ago, and I just never threw the bottle away after I'd drained it...

This is the end of a pipe that is part of a fallen fence (see it in the first comment below). After cropping the image, I loaded it into Topaz Adjust and went wild with several of the presets, layering one on top of the other, until I came up with something that I thought was sufficiently Halloweeny. Then I took one of our cats and placed him snugly in his lair behind the safety of the spider webs.

Actually, I had to lose it first before I could find it, but there it was amongst the shrubbery in the back yard this morning, and I thought it looked so pretty laying there where it was that I decided it would make a perfect subject for today's Our Daily Challenge topic, which is Macro/Close-up.

Since I love shooting macros and have a great macro lens, I was planning to set up a true macro shot for the challenge later today, but I'm happy this pencil jumped out at me and saved me the trouble. It's certainly no macro, but fortunately close-ups count, too.

Tags: green   bug   camouflaged   macromondays   rogerjohnson
The 6/18/12 theme for Macro Mondays is camouflage, and this greenish bug on a green leaf was was the closest I could come to anything that would fit the theme. I found plenty of larger critters that blended nicely into their surroundings, but this is a macro group, so I had to think small. Of course, trying to claim that this bug with its big red eyes is camouflaged is really stretching it, but I guess the bugs that were really camouflaged were so well hidden I just couldn't find them.

Today I was doing some yard work and moved a log and found this guy looking all confused by being so suddenly exposed to the sunlight. My tiny Canon S95 is permanently attached to my belt, so, rather than run into the house for my SLR, I grabbed the Canon and held it down at ground level a few inches in front of the salamander and started shooting. I couldn't frame him in the monitor because these ancient bones of mine would object vigorously if I tried climbing down there with the camera, so I just shot from the hip, or I should say from the foot. Since he was so lethargic, I had plenty of time to keep on shooting until I saw a decent image on the monitor and then escorted him into a protected area so I wouldn't grind him up with the lawn mower.

Flickr A toy truck for Macro Monday
Tags: truck   toy   mayflower   macromonday   rogerjohnson   topazadjust
When we fled New England's inhospitable climate 45 years ago and struck out for Sunny California, we had Mayflower move our meager belongings for us, and seeing that huge truck back up our narrow gravel, 200-foot long driveway was an impressive sight, to say the least. It was also quite emotional, and when a few years later my wife Sammy found this little palm-sized toy Mayflower truck, she just had to have it.

"Toy" is today's topic for Macro Monday (This is really a very small toy...).

You need to see the original photo in the comments below to appreciate what I was working with here.

It was scanned from a deteriorated 35- year old Ektachrome slide that, at its best, was never very good. As you can see from the harsh shadows, it was taken using a camera-mounted direct flash, which doomed it to mediocrity from the start.

Technically, it was definitely no keeper, but it is a fun memory shot, and I didn't have the heart to throw it out, so I threw it into a shoe box, where it languished for 35 years. Then, eventually computers and scanners got invented and Adobe came up with Photoshop, and Topaz came up with Adjust, and I once again came across this old slide and realized maybe, just maybe there was hope. However, except for a B&W version that was pretty good, I didn't come up with anything I was willing to allow into my photostream until I tried the Venice Painting preset in Topaz Adjust. It's a long way from perfect, but it's a vast improvement over the original shown below, and it does a much better job of preserving a fun memory..

Thanks goes to iamdogsmom for the source image of the headless mannequin (see 1st comment below)
I got the old lady's head from Goggle Images, and the bench is from my archives.

This is not what I had in mind when I started working on this image. The old lady's face was a florid red, while the mannequin had a greenish tint to it, and I had hoped to alter the colors so at least the colors would be reasonably compatible, even though the face and the body obviously didn't belong together. By the time I finished (having spent way too much time on it}, I ended up with a near sepia image, and it would have been so much easier just to convert the whole thing to sepia, or some form of monochrome right from the start. Oh well, live and learn...

This is a 3-image composite I put together in PSE 11 for Down Under Challenge #666. Thanks goes to Rubyblossom for the rooster image. The background and the chicken with spaghetti are mine.

There's a fun story that goes with that white chicken. For our six-month wedding anniversary, while attending graduate school in Indiana in 1961, my wife Sammy and I bought each other a German shepherd puppy, whom we named Romair. This presented a potential problem because back home in Massachusetts, we would be introducing Romair to 10,000 free range chickens on her family's farm, where a renegade Romair could raise all kinds of havoc. So, we bought Romair a couple of newborn chicks, whom we named Matilda and Penelope, and when we introduced them, it was love at first sight. They crawled all over Romair and even shared his food (including this bowl of spaghetti...), and he kept the kitchen floor clean by gobbling up their poops. And, happily, back on the farm, chicken lover Romair was a perfect gentleman among his 10,000 new best friends.

Twenty years ago, my wife Sammy and I took a road trip up through Glacier National Park and the Canadian Rockies, and along the way, we spotted this sheep sunning himself on the mountain side within range of my 200mm lens + 1.7x tele extender. I first posted this shot, SOOC, in 2007, but lately I've been wanting to play around with textures and picked this image out of my archives to play with. I posted the SOOC version in the comments below, so you can see the difference.

Flickr Predictive Graffiti ~ This is straight out of Woo Woo land...

Talk about strange ~ I was in college on a Geography Club field trip somewhere in Maine in 1957, when our group came upon this bit of graffiti and gleefully pointed it out to me. I (Roger) had a female friend whom I called Sam (later softened to Sammy). We were classmates but were definitely not "an item," had never gone out on a date together, and in fact, at that time, Sam thought of me as a bit of a pest (to say the least...). Obviously, the creator of this graffiti had someone other than the two of us in mind, but all the guys and gals on that field trip decided he was psychic and that my destiny had been sealed.
Turns out he was right...
Poor Sam was very upset that I had taken this photo and shown it to our fellow classmates - and I mean very upset -. Even the suggestion of us being in any kind of a "relationship" was downright repulsive to her, and she didn't find this in the least bit funny and certainly not even remotely predictive of the future.

We were married three years later...`~'

I first posted this a few years ago, but I decided to run it by again so that, after a little bit of tweaking, I'd have something for the Fenced Friday Group.
