I went at high tide to help with the creek flow in front of the boat for reflection, it also helped that it was 5:00p. I also processed only the boat in HDR to give it a better detailed rustic look. It was a perfect blue sky day, no clouds… so I used a polarizing filter to help with some of the blue coloring. When I came home to look at my shots they were over saturated in blue sky. I went into Photoshop and cut out the sky and popped in a sky I shot last week in Texas. I think the stormy sky adds some drama to the photo. The parking lot was 100 feet away and there was a easy trail for hiking. LA LEYENDA DE SAN TOMÁS Y LOS REYES MAGOS: Según El estudio de la portada de Santo Domingo de Soria realizado por Esther Lozano López (p.11) , el santo patrón de este templo, conocido también como Santo Tomé de Soria, es San Tomás Apostol, relacionado con la historia legendaria de los Reyes Magos. Cuenta la leyenda que, después de la resurrección de Jesús, el apóstol Tomás los halló en Saba. Y luego precisamente San Tomás les instruyó en la fe cristiana. Las propiedades prácticas de los regalos de los Reyes Magos: 1) El oro tiene sus beneficios para la salud y se utiliza en diversas aplicaciones médicas: ilumina células cancerosas, se emplea para tratar algunos tumores, en la restauración de las piezas dentales, es un mineral muy resistente a las bacterias, tiene sus capacidades antiinflamatorias y sus beneficios para quienes padecen artritis reumatoide. La crisoterapia o auroterapia tratan diversos trastornos con este metal. En la antigüedad se creía que ingerir los alimentos diarios servidos en platos de oro podría prolongar el tiempo de vida y retardar el envejecimiento. 2) El incienso al arder desprende un humo aromático. Se considera que este producto tiene propiedades calmantes y en la antigüedad se utilizaba para tratar la melancolía, aliviaba la depresión, la ansiedad, los síntomas de la gripe y del resfriado. Se le atribuyen también propiedades cicatrizantes y, en la medicina india, lo utilizan para tratar la artritis. 3) La mirra tiene propiedades antisépticas, digestivas y antidepresivas. La mirra desarrollaba poderosamente la resistencia física del cuerpo protegiéndolo contra las infecciones, aparte de que mejoraba muchas condiciones de la piel, se empleaba contra el asma, la bronquitis, la diarrea. Desde la antigüedad era uno de los componentes para la elaboración de perfumes, ungüentos, medicinas y era usada como anestésico para los moribundos o a los condenados a muerte y se solía dar mezclada con vino. Los valores económicos de los regalos: El oro tuvo siempre un precio alto. En la época de Jesús el incienso costaba apenas un poco menos que el oro, pero la mirra valía unas siete veces más que ambos. Los países productores intentaban por todos los medios mantener su monopolio y procuraban descorazonar cualquier intento de ubicación de las plantaciones. It's a gargantuan undertaking. Watching Reyes work was a delight, as he is obviously experienced and efficient, but takes many moments to step back and consider his next move after looking at the mural as a whole. This means he will have bursts of activity followed by slower, contemplative moments spent a few yards away from his creation, with his head moving from angle to angle, eyes squinting and focusing. The greatness of Reyes work overall is the combined sensations of great planning and loose improvisation. Now he's working with spray cans, but, if this is anything like his other work, he'll spend the final hours working with a brush to add even more of his personality across the wall. Previously, this wall had been painted with less attractive bubble letters over and over and over again as the park service kept painting back over them each time. Hopefully this mural will lead to an overall savings for the city budget and it will ceraintly make a more inviting backdrop for the family BBQs that often happen just a few feet away... When the day started I had no idea that I might be photographing wildlife today, much less tule elk! In fact, today was meant to be primarily a photography day. We decided to spend the day on a coastal drive, starting with breakfast in Santa Cruz and then heading north to... wherever we ended up. We had a vague idea that it might be interesting to end up at Point Reyes Station perhaps, where there was an open art studio event going on. By mid-afternoon, that is indeed where we ended up. We stopped in town to get coffee and a snack and wander about just a bit. With no specific plan in mind we sort of decided to head on out to Point Reyes - the actual "point," not just the general park. On the way back we took a detour down to Drakes Bay for a quick stop. As we drive back up from there to the top of the hill near the main road we saw some strange shapes in the distance behind a fence. The looked like antlers, but that didn't seem right - this particular area is dairy country and the elk that I had heard about were in a different area of the park. But as we reached the top of the hill it became completely obvious that a small herd of tule elk were grazing right on the other side of the fence. We pulled over and I grabbed my long lens. The elk were kind enough to occasionally look up from the business of grazing and pose dramatically in the low late-afternoon light from the west. El "Dia de Reyes" esta basado en un pasaje biblico donde tres personajes hacen ofrenda al recien nacido Niño Jesucristo. Ya luego la gente y el folklore se encargaron de convertir a los personajes en 3 Reyes Magos, que venian de Europa, Africa y Asia, que montaba a Caballo, Elefante y Camello, que regalaron Oro, Incienso y Mirra, que se llamaban Melchor, Gaspar y Baltazar, que llegaron por seguir una estrella nueva que aparecio en los cielos el 24 de diciembre y se poso sobre el pesebre del niño. Para festejar el suceso en Mexico es tradicion comer la rosca de Reyes este dia. La cual es el pan que sale en la foto, y que representa la corona de los reyes, siendo la decoracion y frutas las joyas de la corona. Adentro del pan suele encontrarse pequeños objetos. En la tradicion mas comun los objetos dentro de la rosca son muñequitos de plastico que simbolizan al "Niño Dios" y aquellas personas que en su pedazo de rosca de Reyes les toque "el Niño" seran los afortunados de ofrecer la comida - usualmente tamales y atoles- para el festejo de "El dia de la Candelaria" el 2 de febrero. Otra que me ha tocado ver, es que los objetos son un muñequito con el mismo significado del anterior, un anillo que implica que el afortunado se casara ese año, y un dedal que implica que esa persona se quedara soltera ese año. Tambien parte de la tradicion de "Dia de Reyes" es que el 5 de enero antes de irse a dormir los niños suelen poner un zapato cerca del nacimiento, y el 6 de enero por la mañana recibiran un regalo o juguete como premio de su buen comportamiento. Inside the bread there usually are little items. In the most common tradition those items are several little dolls that are a representation of "Baby God" and the people that find the doll on their pieces of bread are the lucky ones that got to offer the food - usually atole and tamales- for the celebration of "Dia de la Candelaria" on February 2nd. Another tradition is that the items are: a little doll and has the same meaning, a ring meaning that the lucky person gets to marry that year, a thimble meaning that person will remain single that year. It is located in Marin County approximately 30 mi (48 km) WNW of San Francisco. The peninsula is a well defined area, separated from the rest of Marin County by a rift zone of the San Andreas Fault, about half of which is sunk below sea level and forms Tomales Bay. The Point Reyes National Seashore includes wild coastal beaches and headlands, estuaries, and uplands, with a coastline that bears a striking resemblance to Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Although parts of the peninsula are commercially farmed, and parts are under the jurisdiction of other conservation authorities, the National Park Service provides signage and seeks to manage visitor impact on the entire peninsula. The northernmost part of the peninsula is maintained as a reserve for tule elk, which are readily seen there. The preserve is also very rich in raptors and shorebirds. Cuenta la leyenda que don Juan de Atarés era un caballero cristiano de noble familia procedente de Atarés. Un día, a fines del siglo VII, por una vocación religiosa don Juan decidió renunciar a sus cuantiosos bienes, cambiar sus galas de caballero por el humilde sayal de penitente y abandonar su palacio solariego por una cueva en la Sierra de San Juan, cerca de Jaca. Allí él construyó una cruz de madera y ante ella se pasaba horas rezando. Pero un día le sorprendió el ruído de pasos en la cueva. Y al volver la cabeza don Juan se quedó asombrado al verle a un caballero ricamente vestido que con un ademán muy amable le dijo que él tirase sus harapos, que volviera a vestirse de púrpura y oro, como le correspondía. Luego el caballero le invitó que le siguiera prometiendo mostrarle el destino que le aguardaba. El visitante, que era el propio Lucifer, cogió del brazo al penitente, y don Juan se dejó llevar hasta el exterior de la cueva. De pronto se oyó un estruendo como el de un terremoto: las piedras de la montaña comenzaron a moverse formando columnas, capiteles, arcos, bóvedas, muros y pavimentos, en tal forma que Atarés vio ante sus ojos un soberbio palacio. Entonces el Demonio le propuso a don Juan que le entregase su alma a cambio del gran poder y riquezas renunciando a ese Dios que consentía que él andaba vestido como un mendigo. Sin embargo Atarés comenzó a orar y pronto cayó en el suelo sin sentido. El Señor de las Tinieblas desapareció. Y cuando Juan de Atarés volvió en sí, se encontró en presencia de un ángel. Inmediatamente se oyó un estruendo, parecido al que se había oído durante la visita del Caballero Tenebroso, pero todas las piedras del suntuoso palacio se desmoronaron y cayeron al fondo de una profunda sima. Entonces el ángel le explicó a Atarés que sólo eso quedaría del poderío del enemigo de Dios que había venido a tentarle. Luego la leyenda "se bifurca". De acuerdo con una versión el ángel le a don Juan mandó a otra cueva, donde él debía, por voluntad de Dios, labrar un altar a San Juan Bautista y encomendarle su alma. Y entonces empieza otra historia relacionada con otro lugar... Según otra versión Atarés debía quedarse en esta misma cueva, labrar un altar a San Juan Bautista y encomendarle su alma. El penitente cumplió la orden recibida, luego construyó alrededor de este altar una pequeña ermita y cuando presintió que iba a morir esculpió en una piedra la inscripción siguiente: "Yo, Juan, primer anacoreta de este lugar, habiendo despreciado el siglo por amor de Dios fabriqué, según alcanzaron mis fuerzas, esta iglesia en honor de San Juan, y aquí reposo". Mientras tanto en uno de los montes cercanos fue construída una fortaleza cuyo señor tenía dos hijos llamados Félix y Voto. Y una tarde de otoño de los principios del siglo VIII Voto salió de caza a caballo por los montes. Divisó un ciervo y corrió tras él. El ciervo, huyendo, cayó a un abismo. Voto llevaba el caballo desenfrenado, creyó que iba a correr la misma suerte del ciervo y se encomendó a San Juan Bautista. Entonces el caballo se paró con las patas traseras en el mismo borde del precipicio. Voto se apeó, clavó sus rodillas en el suelo y dio gracias a Dios por haberle salvado la vida. Luego el caballero deseó ver el lugar donde había caído el ciervo, descendió por los matorrales y pedruscos y llegó al umbral de una cueva. Él entró en la cueva y encontró el cadáver de un ermitaño con la cabeza apoyada sobre una piedra en la que aparecía la inscripción antes citada. Entonces Voto dio sepultura al cadáver, salió de la cueva y se volvió al monte donde le esperaba su hermano Félix. Después de contarle todo lo que había ocurrido le comunicó su decisión de ceder a los pobres sus bienes y retirarse a la cueva de Atarés para dedicarse a la oración y a la penitencia. De tal manera se conmovió su hermano Félix que dijo que se marchaba también con él. Y ambos se instalaron en esta cueva descubierta por Voto. Pocos años después se les unieron otros anacoretas formando una comunidad que posteriormente dio origen al Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña construido en esta cueva y sus alrededores... Los Reyes Magos fomentan la industria del calzado y enseñan a los niños que las botas se deben limpiar al menos una vez al año. Por contra, el gordinflas exige que se deje un calcetín, prenda proclive a servir de acomodo de la mugre, cuando no de indecorosos agujeros. 8. Los Reyes Magos planifican concienzudamente su trabajo y se retiran discretamente cuando acaban la función. 9. Papá Noel vive en el Polo norte y por eso es un amargado, los Magos son de Oriente, cuna de la civilización y por ello de una elegancia no decadente. 10. The term is often applied to the Point Reyes Peninsula, the promontory bounded from Tomales Bay on the northeast and Bolinas Lagoon on the southwest. The headland is protected as part of Point Reyes National Seashore. The cape protects Drakes Bay on its southern side. The headland is largely drained by Drakes Estero. Inverness Ridge runs along the peninsula's northwest-southeast spine, with forested peaks around 430 meters (1,400 feet). West of the ridge, the land flattens out and the vegetation turns to scrub. The Mount Vision Fire in 1995 burned part of Inverness Ridge. The peninsula is a popular recreational destination for the nearby San Francisco Bay Area, especially for hiking on its many trails and sea kayaking the shores of Tomales Bay and the coast. Vegetation native to Point Reyes includes Bishop pine, Douglas-fir, coyote brush, monkeyflower, poison oak, California blackberry, salal and coast redwood, among others. During the Cold War, submarines repaired at Mare Island Naval Shipyard were tested in the shallow waters off Point Reyes following shipyard repairs. Navy safety personnel used a small monitoring and communications hut on the peninsula for monitoring submarines during these sea trials. The peninsula is a well defined area, separated from the rest of Marin County by a rift zone of the San Andreas Fault, about half of which is sunk below sea level and forms Tomales Bay. The Point Reyes National Seashore includes wild coastal beaches and headlands, estuaries, and uplands, with a coastline that bears a striking resemblance to Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Although parts of the peninsula are commercially farmed, and parts are under the jurisdiction of other conservation authorities, the National Park Service provides signage and seeks to manage visitor impact on the entire peninsula. The northernmost part of the peninsula is maintained as a reserve for tule elk, which are readily seen there. The preserve is also very rich in raptors and shorebirds.
