Jason’s priorities include supporting local businesses, who will benefit from the National Insurance Contributions Bill and the Deregulation Bill. The former puts in place a £2,000 employment allowance which will support jobs and help small businesses to grow, whilst the latter will reduce the burden of unnecessary or excessive red tape. The Immigration Bill ensures that the UK attracts people who will contribute and deters those who will not. It will stop immigrants from accessing benefits that they are not entitled to. Foreign nationals who commit serious crime will be deported, private landlords will be required to check the immigration status of tenants and firms who employ illegal labour will face substantial fines. The Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Bill will give the police powers to tackle anti-social behaviour, forced marriage, dangerous dogs and illegal firearms used by gangs and in organised crime. Jason is the Vice Chairman of the All Party Parliament Group for Rail in the North, and is delighted to see the introduction of the High Speed Rail (Preparation) Bill. This Bill will enable the building of HS2 from London to Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds ‘as fast as possible’. Despite continued investment, the East Coast line as well as many others will not be able to cope with the increased number of passengers in the decades to come, and the HS2 scheme frees up capacity for existing lines, as well as helping to break down the North-South divide. The Mortgage scheme will help those who can afford to pay a mortgage but cannot raise the large deposits required, whilst the Help to Buy scheme makes loans available to people to buy new-build homes. The Care Bill will put a cap on the cost of care so that no-one has to sell their home in their lifetime to pay for residential care. Her Majesty unveiled the new Coalition Government’s programme for the coming year by announcing a series of proposed new laws which gave us the first indications of the priorities of the new Government for their first year in office. Dan Byles, who defeated the previous Labour MP Mike O’Brien by a nail-biting 54 votes after three counts, is in London this week in his new role representing the people of North Warwickshire & Bedworth on the national stage. Dan said: “I am very pleased that the Queen’s Speech contained some very strong and necessary measures designed to put the country back on its feet, after the last Government literally ran out of money and left us virtually bankrupt. “But I am also pleased to see some concrete measures that will bring a real benefit to local people. “Firstly, we saw strong action to deal with the deficit. There is no money left, so measures to bring the country’s terrifying debt under control are essential. “Secondly, we saw measures to simplify to tax and benefits system to make them fairer. This was a major issue on the doorstep during the election and I am pleased to see David Cameron getting to grips with it straight away. I am particularly pleased to see that Equitable Life Policyholders will at last be treated fairly. “Non-EU immigration will be curbed, with clear limits on the numbers who can come to the UK to work, and the unwanted and unnecessary ID cards system will be scrapped. “Locally, I am particularly delighted to see that we have honoured our pledge to sweep away the central and top down housing targets.
