To commemorate British gold medal winners at the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2012 Summer Paralympics, postal companies including Royal Mail painted a number of post boxes gold. Each gold medallist had a post box painted in recognition of their achievement, usually in their home-town. It marked the first occasion in modern times that the colour of post boxes in the United Kingdom had been changed from their traditional red. The project was launched on 24 July by painting the pillar box at Westminster Abbey, whilst the first athletes' boxes to be painted were in Lossiemouth, Moray, Scotland, and Penzance, Cornwall, England to commemorate the victory by Heather Stanning and Helen Glover in the women's coxless pair rowing. In addition to the post boxes a first class stamp depicting each medal winning individual or team was produced. On 2 November 2012 it was announced that the gold postboxes would retain their new colour permanently and would be marked with their associated athlete on a plaque. Bentworth is a village and large civil parish in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, about 4 miles (6.4 km) northwest of the town of Alton, just west of the A339 road between Alton and Basingstoke. The Civil Parish of Bentworth has an area of 3,763 acres (15.23 km2), of which about seven per cent is woodland. The village of Bentworth itself is in the centre of the Civil Parish area, which also contains the hamlets of Ashley, Burkham, Holt End, Thedden and Wivelrod. At the south side of the Civil Parish area at Wivelrod is one of the highest points in the county of Hampshire at 217 m (712 ft) above sea level. According to the 2001 census, Bentworth has a population of 466. The village of Bentworth has a long history which can be traced to Saxon times, and Roman remains have been found in the area. After the Norman conquest in 1066, in the Domesday Survey of 1086 the manor of Bentworth was part of the Odiham Hundred. The village of Bentworth has grown in recent years, with the construction of several houses, as well as the post-Second World War development in Glebe Fields. The village has two public houses – the Star Inn (seen here in the background) and the Sun Inn – and a primary school, a cricket club and the Bentworth Garden Club. Bentworth formerly had a railway station on the east side of the parish area, the Bentworth and Lasham railway station on the Basingstoke and Alton Light Railway, until the railway's closure to passenger traffic in 1932. The nearest railway station is now 3.6 miles (5.8 km) east of the village, at Alton. The Star Inn is a real English Country pub offering real ales, fine wines and traditional freshly prepared food. Royal Mail painted this post box gold in his honour in Alton. Its certainly not my finest hour photography wise- cramped space next to a wall, sun shadow from said wall, 3 other people staring at me whilst waiting to take their shots(not facedown). It would have been cool to include them in this photo but they looked slightly scared of the madwoman. Also, Royal Mail certainly wouldn't win any medals for the shoddy paintwork, it was awful! A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "What we're trying to achieve is (paint the postbox in) the town where they identify with the most. We understand that to be Alton but if it is Bentworth then I'm sure we'll be very happy to go over to Bentworth and paint another postbox gold." The car parked next to the post box is a 1936 Austin 10, Colwyn Cabriolet which is a small car which that produced by the Austin Motor Company. The Austin 10 range was launched in 1932 and was Austin's best-selling car in the 1930s and continued in production, with upgrades, until 1947. It fitted in between the "baby" Austin 7 which had been introduced in 1922 and the Austin 12 hp which had been updated in 1931. The design of the car was conservative with a pressed steel body built on a cross braced chassis. Twenty years on and The Mad Butcher has mellowed. He now has a franchise operation of twenty-nine shops in New Zealand and an associate shop in Canada, all trading under The Mad Butcher name. Pete has handed over day-to-day running of the business and concentrates on the public relations aspect of the game, his charitable activities and sport. On a recent visit to Canada he exhibited his daily contact with the small, personal aspects of his interests, for that is where his success lies, in his contact with the ordinary customer. The cel phone has become indispensible to him and allows him to reach out and maintain the personal touch which has rightly earned him the respect of so many New Zealanders. Update: In 2009, Peter sold his business and retired, well, as much as he can. He is still associated with The Mad Butcher enterprise but devotes his time to his sporting activities and charity work. This has earned him the recognition he so rightly deserves, when he was recognized in the Queen's Honours List in June, 2010, for his community and charity work with the award of Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, making him Sir Peter Charles Leitch,an honour which will rest lightly on his shoulders!
