Flickr Definitely In The 'Front Line' Or 'In Harms Way' The Infamous 'Scissors' Traffic Point Certainly Comes Into These Categories. Parliament Square, J/W Parliament Street/Whitehall & Great George Street, Westminster London, SW1 UK. Circa 1960.
Tags: uk   london   westminster   danger   dangerous   traffic   ad   housesofparliament   scissors   vehicles   parliamentsquare   whitehall   crossings   sw1   parliamentstreet   palaceofwestminster   mps   bridgestreet   metropolitanpolice   trafficpoint   thefrontline   inharmsway   alphadelta   thescissors   newpalaceyard   cannonrow   ltbuses   sessionalorder   trafficpoints   parliamentarycrossings   carriagegates   mostdangeroustrafficpointintheworld   londontransportbusdriver
This Metropolitan Police Parliamentary Crossings traffic point was probably the most dangerous and frightening traffic point in the world. (see note). If you don't believe this statement then visit this location, spend just 5 minutes, imagine the position of the officer and the bollards and make your own mind up. Frightening! Hairy! Madness! Crazy! Unbelievable!

The Police Officer in the picture (see note) was part of the Metropolitan Police's Parliamentary Crossings Staff and is manning the infamous 'Scissors' traffic point, arguably the most dangerous traffic control duty of all time. The daily posting was for a total of 8 hours in all weathers, rain, sleet, snow & sunshine! If the House was sitting all night the 'Scissors' would have been manned throughout the night without any extra lighting.

The officer would have been attached to Cannon Row Police Station (AD) but 'on loan' to the Parliamentary Crossings Detail.

I cannot tell you how many times the bollards were demolished and replaced. It is not clear here but there is a rise and a fall in the road (was in the early 60's anyway!) so when the police constable released the Southbound Parliament Street/Whitehall traffic the bollards were only partially visible to the oncoming driver.

Traffic released from Bridge Street into Parliament Square used to 'jockey' for position to avoid collision with said bollards and incumbent police officer by adopting a 'scissors' manouvre.

The act of assisting a Member of Parliament's vehicle from the north side of Parliament Square, across Parliament Square and into Carriage Gates of the Palace of Westminster whilst either Parliament Street/Whitehall or Bridge Street traffic was running, was, to put it mildly, SUICIDAL!!!

When posted to this point one didn't day dream, you needed eyes in the back of your head and be totally aware of what was happening around you at all times.

The officer posted to this traffic point always gave extremely deep thought and consideration before raising his hand in the act of stopping the traffic, the consequences were potentially dire.

Always the officers best friend was the London Transport bus driver who was aware of your existence and his driving position enabled a superior view of the road ahead.

This point's function was to facilitate Members of Parliament's progress to the House from the North side of Parliament Square eastwards across the East side of the square and into New Palace Yard via Carriage Gates.

When the House of Commons sat the traffic lights in and around Parliament Square were turned off and the Parliamentary Crossings Staff manned the points.

The duty was governed by the Parliamentary 'Sessional Order'. If there is, or was, a more dangerous traffic point in the world then please tell me about it!

So I went out for the first time in quite a while with my camera last night. I've had this image in mind for a long time, but just had never bothered to take it. Its not entirely what I had in mind as I thought the parliament building would have had more lighting and the sky would be more blue. The sky I think was just a problem with seasonal timing of the sun setting directly where I was shooting. The light trails were pretty good though, I wasn't sure how much traffic there would be, but there was enough for a 2 minute exposure.

See more images of Scotland on my website www.tannachyphotography.co.uk or check out my Facebook page to keep track of my uploads away from flickr.

Singapore Parliament House – an update
Singapore Parliament House with the new Singapore's "Crown Jewel", Marina Bay Sands over the background. Seems like most of the Singapore's major attractions are located along the famous Singapore River. This only shows a section of the many other attractions within striking distance. The Singapore river on the right will take you to more attractions like Boat Quay & Clarke Quay either by hoping on a cruise or just taking walk along the river promenade. Slideshow on Singapore

This time I manage to secure a higher view point... An evening exploring with Reggie

Flickr Parliament House - Edinburgh
Tags: old   edinburgh   parliament
Parliament House, which is situated close to St Giles Cathedral, was the home of the Scottish Parliament from 1640 until its union with the English Parliament in 1707. At the time of the Union the parliament consisted of 314 members, of which 247 were aristocrats.
When the building was completed in 1639 it looked completely different to how it looks today. At the beginning of the 1800's Robert Reid started to redesign the streets of Edinburgh in the classical Greek style and he formed the new Parliament Square round the original Parliament House. The old building was refaced and surrounded by open arcades to make it a thoroughly modern building for its day.... The Great Hall, where the parliament met, had walls lined with rich tapestries and a huge arched oak roof spanning its 50 foot width. The hall got much of its natural light from a magnificent south facing stained glass window... Parliament House is now used for the Court of Session and other higher courts of law.

This is the other half of Parliament House which I posted earlier today. Across the river is Boat Quay & The Central Business District. Taken at the same spot as where I took the earlier shot at High Street Centre. it was unfortunate that I couldn't arrive on time for the blue hour. Well maybe the next round...

pp: I have cheated slightly with photoshop to get the Elgin bridge in full. The original shot was cut off near right corners (see original). Another shot was used to blend in but taken from a different angle to show more of the river. Made the bridge slightly bigger to give some depth to the scene. As usual finish off with light sharpening & contrast

I've been trying to get a nice shot of the Old Parliament House in Canberra for some time now and just can't manage to get a nice evening for a long exposure shot. This time when I got there it was so windy and unbelievably cold. So I froze for an hour trying to do my stuff. The trees are a little blurry because the winds were really strong, so I guess better luck next time.

Old Parliament House opened in 1927 and served as the home of Federal Parliament until 1988. In Canberra’s early years the House was the social, geographic and political heart of the new Australian capital.

Over time, this impressive building became synonymous with some of the country's most important moments including Australia’s declaration of war against Japan in 1941 and the dismissal of Gough Whitlam’s Labor Government in 1975. The significance of Old Parliament House today lies in its historical and social value to the Australian people. The House is a nationally significant ‘museum of itself’ and of Australia’s political heritage—so, as well as being a popular tourist destination, it is also a precious place which needs conservation.

The Houses of Parliament along the River Thames, with the Victoria tower on the left and the clock tower containing Big Ben on the right. Along the right edge the Westminster Bridge can be seen. A small portion of Westminster Abbey can also be seen (see the note on the photo).

This being one of the most photographed spots in the world, I wanted to do something at least a little different if I could. What I came up with is a seven exposure HDR that I converted to B&W using Silver Efex Pro.

Presenting a wide view of the area around the Swedish Parliament building in Stockholm. This is a panorama from 2 shots. I was using the Sigma 10-20 mm lens and hence the shots had lots of distortion on the edges. It took me some time to remove most of the distortion before stitching them together.

Large view is recommended! ;-)

One more day to go before the weekend!! Wishing you all a great day!

Parliament Hill (colloquially The Hill, French Colline du Parlement) is a scenic location on the southern banks of the Ottawa River in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. Its Gothic revival suite of buildings – the Parliament Buildings – serves as the home of the Parliament of Canada; the best known of these buildings is the Centre Block, with its prominent Peace Tower, a national symbol. Parliament Hill attracts approximately 3 million visitors each year.

Parliament Hill is a limestone outcrop with a gently sloping top. For hundreds of years it served as a landmark on the Ottawa River for First Nations, and later European traders, adventurers and industrialists, to mark their journey to the interior of the continent. After Ottawa, then called Bytown, was founded, the builders of the Rideau Canal used the hill as a location for a military base, naming it Barrack Hill. A large fortress was planned for the site, but was never built, and by 1858 it had lost its strategic importance.

In that same year, Queen Victoria selected Bytown as the capital of the Province of Canada. Barrack Hill was chosen as the site for the new parliament buildings, given its prominence over both the town and the river, as well as the fact that it was already owned by the Crown. Within less than two years, on December 20, 1859, ground was broken on the site; by summer of the following year, Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, laid the cornerstone of the new parliament. It became the largest project undertaken in North America to that date. The complex was not completed, however, when three colonies of British North America confederated, with the potential for others to join as provinces, with Ottawa remaining the capital. Thus, the bureaucracy of parliament spread to buildings beyond Parliament Hill even at that early date.[2]

By 1876 the structures of Parliament Hill were completed, along with the wrought iron fence and Queen's Gates, forged by Ives & Co. of Montreal. However, the grounds had yet to be properly designed; Governor General Lord Dufferin sent chief architect Thomas Scott to New York City to meet with Calvert Vaux and view Central Park. Vaux completed a layout for the landscape, including the present day driveways, terraces, and main lawn; Scott created more informal grounds to the sides of and behind the parliament.[2]

The Centre Block was destroyed by fire on February 3, 1916. Despite the ongoing war, the original cornerstone was re-laid by Governor General Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, on September 1, 1916; exactly fifty-six years after his brother, by now the late King Edward VII, had first set it. Eleven years later the new tower was completed, dedicated as the Peace Tower in commemoration of the Canadians who had lost their lives during the First World War.

The entire parliamentary precinct measures 112,360 square metres (1,209,433 sq ft), bounded on the north by the Ottawa River, on the east by the Rideau Canal, on the south by Wellington Street, and on the west by a service road near the Supreme Court.

The main buildings are: the Centre Block, built between 1865 and 1927, containing the House of Commons and Senate chambers, and featuring the Peace Tower and Library of Parliament; the East Block, built in two stages in 1867 and 1910, containing senators' offices and preserved Confederation-era rooms; and the West Block, built in 1865, containing ministers' and MPs' offices and meeting rooms. The three blocks are disposed around a large grassy quadrangle, while the Centre Block is surrounded by lawns and a walk overlooking the Ottawa River. The Library of Parliament was opened in 1876. The Legislature of the Province of Canada met for the first time in the new building on June 8, 1866, and the new Parliament of the Dominion of Canada began its first session there on November 6, 1867.

The overall site is in a combination of the High Victorian Gothic, English garden, formal garden styles popular at the end of the 19th century. The Palace of Westminster and precinct had recently been rebuilt in a similar style, and the choice of a gothic rather than an American inspired neoclassical design, was a symbol of Canada's continued links to Britain.

The only structure on Parliament Hill to have been purposefully demolished was the building, which had been behind the West Block, that housed the Supreme Court between 1889 and 1945. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s there were discussions to tear down other parliamentary precinct buildings, including the Library of Parliament and West Block for new structures, and the East Block for parking. None of these plans were carried out.[3]

[edit] Plans

Since 2002 a thorough renovation project has been going on across the parliamentary precinct, specifically focusing on West Block renovations, security of perimeters, pedestrian and vehicle screening, circulation of traffic/delivery and parking.[4] Increased costs due to greater deterioration of the heritage buildings. Significant increase in building commodities (steel) and labour costs (highly specialized and skilled trades) Increased allowances for risks based on experience with other heritage rehabilitation projects such as the Library of Parliament. In 2012, the Centre Block is scheduled to be closed for five years for an extensive interior renovation. In preparation, the other buildings are being renovated and expanded first; the inner courtyards of the West and East Blocks will be enclosed, and temporary chambers for the House of Commons and Senate installed. Public Works estimates that the total price for renovations, not including the Centre Block, will be more than $1 billion.

“London goes beyond any boundary or convention. It contains every wish or word ever spoken, every action or gesture ever made, every harsh or noble statement ever expressed. It is illimitable. It is Infinite London.“

Picture taken from the south bank of the river Thames after a ride on the London eye. The Houses of Parliament where the two Houses of the Parliament (the House of Lords and the House of Commons) meet to conduct their business. The palace is one of the largest parliament buildings in the world. The layout of the palace is intricate, with its existing buildings containing nearly 1,200 rooms, 100 staircases and well over three kilometers of corridors. Although mainly dating from the 19th century, among the original historic buildings is Westminster Hall, used nowadays for major public ceremonial events such as lyings in state, and the Jewel Tower.

Tried to give this picture a silhouette look to show of the sunset in the background!

I discovered later that the clouds were moving quite quickly, so the Peace Tower, as well as one of the spires on the east block, didn't quite line up the same way in the overlapping shots. In the case of the Peace Tower, the error was so great I had to "fix" it manually - by moving it to follow the surrounding clouds - before running autostitch on it.

Parliament House is the name given to two purpose-built buildings in Canberra, the capital of Australia, where the Parliament of Australia has met since 1927.

In 1978 the Fraser government decided to proceed with a new building on Capital Hill, and the Parliament House Construction Authority was created. The design competition was won by the US-based Italian architect (and now Australian citizen) Romaldo Giurgola, with a design which involved burying most of the building under Capital Hill, and capping the edifice with an enormous spire topped by a large Australian flag.
