What do you think put the Newsweek print edition out of business? Was it social media? Was it the content? Or...?

Tags: muslim   protest   rage   newsweek   alternate
This is an alternate image of the cover on Newsweek. The idea is that in the original one, i suggested that the close up of the two men was not enough for people to grasp the idea of muslim rage. Instead, if people could have a view of the entire surrounding, it would be easier to relate the title to the image. Here, i've added four different images and in all cases, the people are in a protest against the anti-muslim movie, "the innocence of islam."

Flickr Newsweek's Framing, Pt. 1
Tags: framing   newsweek   palin
During the presidential campaign of 2008, Newsweek came under scrutiny when they were accused of portraying Democratic candidates in a more favorable light than the Republican candidates on their covers.

Newsweek came under attack for this cover of Sarah Palin in which people though they purposely zoomed in on her face to paint her in an unflattering light.

Flickr Newsweek publishes 1960' Mad Men issue
Tags: advertising   marketing   tv   media   newsweek   madmen   dailybeast
Newsweek is planning to publish their March issue adopting its 1960's design throughout to mark the return of Mad Men to TV screens in the US.

Tina Brown, editor of Newsweek and The Daily Beast, commented, "Newsweek was very much on the cultural forefront at the time of the show, It covered the events that are so much of the background for the show's drama -- the burgeoning civil rights movement, the women's rights movement, the Vietnam War. That was Newsweek's cutting-edge beat and its flourishing journalistic subject. So it seemed like a wonderful marriage in a sense to take that and apply it to the magazine, to make the magazine an homage to the period."

This is either a great marketing coup for the producers of Mad Men or a very clever promotional tool for Newsweek. Either way it will be an issue to keep.

Although we were skeptical at first, we'd read somewhere the old magazines were potentially good toys for babies at Kajsa's age, so we gave her an old Newsweek to tear apart. And boy did she! She really enjoyed ripping the pages off and tearing them into smaller pieces. We did have to take the smaller shreds away when she began to put them in her mouth, but that didn't deter her from the fun.

by Jim Parkinson with Roger Black

In FontCast’s search for typographic designers with interesting stories to tell we knew we didn't have to go far to find Jim Parkinson — he's just across the water from FontShop San Francisco in Oakland.

Jim is a Bay Area native, returning after a short stint at Hallmark in Kansas City to design the iconic logotype for Rolling Stone during its heyday in the early ’70s. That work led to hundreds of other magazine and newspaper nameplates (Newsweek, Billboard, Esquire, LA Times), band logos, and typeface designs over the next four decades.

At 69, Jim is still going strong, wielding FontLab and paintbrush to create new works of art. We met him at his home studio to talk about letters and life, from the days of beatniks and hippies to his takes on art school and businessmen (AKA “cigar-smoking twits”).

Newsweek International Editor Fareed Zakaria, in an excerpt from his forthcoming book, “The Post-American World,” writes that in America “we are still debating the nature and extent of anti-Americanism. One side says that the problem is real and worrying and that we must woo the world back. The other says this is the inevitable price of power and that many of these countries are envious - and vaguely French - so we can safely ignore their griping. But while we argue over why they hate us, ‘they’ have moved on, and are now far more interested in other, more dynamic parts of the globe. The world has shifted from anti-Americanism to post- Americanism.” In the excerpt, Zakaria explores not the decline of America but “the rise of the rest - the rest of the world.”

Next to his couch an issue of Newsweek -July 5, 1960 "Can anybody stop Kennedy?". It is said that Hemingway stayed out of taking sides with Fidel Castro(Cuba) and John F. Kennedy (America), Although it appears that he was well read and kept up on current events.Although he did denounce Batista's brutality.

Pete, my husband, wrote a letter to the editor of Newsweek and was excerpted in the box. His is the sentence in the "Mail Call" box that reads "What happens after Bush is not so much about mending ties with erstwhile allies; it is about realizing that we have long lost the right to tell the world what to do."

It's a very Pete sentence.
