Es liegt zwischen der 26th Street, der 27th Street, der Madison Avenue und der Park Avenue South und beansprucht damit einen ganzen Block. Das Gebäude war früher der Hauptsitz der New York Life Insurance Company und ist das zweite und letzte Gebäude das von Cass Gilbert im neogotischen Stil erbaut wurde. Das Gebäude ist 188 Meter hoch und besitzt 40 Stockwerke. Neben 2180 Fenstern lassen sich auch 72 Gargoyles an dem Gebäude finden. Die charakteristische goldfarbene Spitze des Gebäudes nimmt sechs Stockwerke in Besitz und war ursprünglich ein mit Blattgold besetztes Kupferdach. Dieses wurde aufgrund von Schäden durch Umwelteinflüsse 1967 durch ein Dach mit goldfarbenen Keramikfliesen ersetzt.[2] Das Gebäude ist heute noch ein prägendes Bild in der Skyline von New York City. Das New York Life Insurance Building wurde 1978 zum National Historic Landmark erklärt. New York is a great city. Much too great to be discovered in only 3 days. There are some really pretty motives over there. If you want to see some really mind boggling New York shots go over to Philip Klinger. He did a great Job over there. Besides I used a wicked processing on this image. I actually didn’t really know why I did it. But you might be wondering why the image looks a bit blurry even though you have the impression of sharp lines and clear parts. That is because I used the Orton Glow style in the beginning. All the things I did after the glow effect where based on it. I was too lazy to do it all over again. Somehow I like the effect because it makes the water in the upper right image golden shivering and it also amplifies the sunrays you can see in the clouds. If you turn over to full size you can see the boundaries of my equipment. There are colourlines around the houses. This is because of the Tokina 12-24mm I used here. I am really waiting to have enough money to buy a nice D700 and a really good lens to get rid of these things I can’t really stop. Also I am happy to see all the great photos on your streams. I am really comfortable with all the different styles I see there. As I am most of the time do City, B&W and symmetry photos I am really impressed by your landscape, flower, family, sports and lightpainting shots! Have a great Sunday! Another one of my “must hit” recommendation for those visiting New York is a stop to Atlas Statue and St. Peter’s Cathedral. I’ve come to this spot specifically for pictures 3-4 times in the past couple of years and still can’t seem to get enough of it. I managed to get a few captures of it during some weekend shooting with one of my buddies from Miami. Now you may be asking yourself what kind of post processing tricks I’m playing around with here….. None. Here’s the secret: To achieve this technique set your camera up on your tripod and set up the composition. Take a long exposure and turn your zoom… that’s it. Play around with this… you’ll get a different effect for zooming in and zooming out. Here’s some interesting background info about the statue itself: In Rockefeller Center, directly across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral, is this two ton statue of Atlas, and the largest sculptural work at Rockefeller Center. Atlas carries the heavens upon his shoulders as punishment for defying Zeus. Designed and cast in 1936 by Lee Lawrie and Rene Chambellan, the statue's exaggerated musculature and stylized body are characteristic of the Art Deco style. The north-south axis of the armillary sphere on his shoulders points to the North Star as viewed from New York City. Laid across Atlas's shoulders is a wide, curved beam that displays a frieze of the traditional symbols for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Adjacent to Earth (over Atlas's right forearm) is a small crescent symbolizing the Moon. Affixed to one of the sphere's rings are symbols for twelve constellations through which the Sun passes during the year. This one is from this past weekend. One of my friends came to visit from Miami and we spent most of the weekend shooting. (look for more NYC pics to come this week). What's interesting about this one is the statue here is part of a very controversial art project called "Event Horizon." The project has been criticized because these statues that are spread around the grounds and rooftops of Madison Park show off the male anatomy. It was a pretty cool hotel, it reminded me of The Night At The Roxbury. On the main floor there were little streets that were supost to be like new york and there was food places and it was like the inside was the outside haha pretty cool. Although on the last day there was some kind of electrical fire on the 5th floor and i was getting ready and packing and some lady came pounding on the door and said we had to leave. You could smell smoke and i was sooo pissed. But a few hours later we got back into our room cause we were on the 7th floor. Here's one from the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. I was allowed access to the staging street where the whole parade was lined up and ready to go. It allowed me the opportunity to get in front of all of the cars (since they weren't moving) and get this really cool POV. The Puerto Rican Day Parade takes place annually along Fifth Avenue in New York City, on the second Sunday in June, in honor of the nearly 4 million inhabitants of Puerto Rico and all people of Puerto Rican birth or heritage residing in the mainland U.S. The parade marches along Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 86th Street and has grown to become one of the largest parades in New York City, with nearly three million spectators annually. Some of the guys rode the bus from Flash Forward in Boston, MA, but just coming off vacation, I flew in directly to New York. We took the subway from our hotel near Times Square to the venue and discovered graffiti all over the walls! Luckily, it was graffiti we had arranged and was all bus tour related. After the event, a bunch of the guys got together to stand in line at the Times Square Best Buy for the launch of the XBox video game, Halo 3. I wasn't feeling well, so I didn't join them, but after something like four hours in line, they had their goodies. We called the bus around at 2 AM, loaded up and set out for the next venue, Toronto, Canada. Most of the crew played Halo (networked across several large LCD screens throughout the bus) all night long. Established in 1784, the Bank of New York was the second bank in the nation and New York's oldest financial institution. In 1796, it became the first bank to erect a building on Wall Street. They stayed on the same plot of land through 1998 when they vacated the present building for 1 Wall Street. Morris' 32-story Neo-Georgian skyscraper is clad in limestone and features multiple setbacks that double as open-air terraces as well as Colonial style elements, such as the flanking thatched-roofed setbacks and the top in the form of a small temple, crowned with a copper eagle at 156.5 m. The three-storey base is clad in rusticated limestone. The 29,700 m² of space within the building has been modernized and remodelled, whereas the original banking halls on the first and second floors have retained their historic styling. The first two floors are connected by an elliptical entrance lobby and all three have ample marble decor. The interior features murals made by J. Monroe Hewlett in 1929, depicting commercial and banking themes. On the right, stands 40 Wall Street, originally known as the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building, or Manhattan Company Building, and later known Trump Building. On the left, stands 60 Wall Street. The former Bank of New York & Trust Company Building was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1998. 40 Wall Street was designated in 1995. It was shot by one of those guys who goes around taking pictures and then gets you to buy one. You can see part of the triple observation towers of the New York State Pavilion, designed by architect Philip Johnson for this World's Fair, peaking out from behind the metal post on the right of the shot. (Those of you who have seen "Men in Black" must remember the part they played in that film) My mother is in the orange dress and I have the red headband on. That is one of her boyfriends and his son. This was right around the time of her separation from my father. I remember this day vividly. It is funny how you can see things so differently as you grow and mature.
