I found this display in a very popular cosmetic store chain in the Philadelphia, PA. USA area.
All the fabulous stars and young models of today--- but here's a vintage photo of Marilyn Monroe in gorgeous color to promote a new hair care line !
It blew me away ....then only confirmed what I've always known. Timeless beauty is just that.
In 2014 , her image is selling hair care products..... to young people that may not even know who she is but can still in 2014, relate to her . As something not only beautiful but relevant.

Flickr MARILYN MONROE CREATIVITY COLLAGE CREATED FOR FliCKR BLACK DAY TRIBUTE 12-8-2013

[The legendary actress Marilyn Monroe always comes to my mind as a woman that fought for her creativity as a professional actor, until her untimely end. So much so, that it 's turmoil played a large point in her untimely and deeply shadowed passing.]

I created my own 'photomontage' for Flickr's Black Day of Protest against Yahoo's forced changes to the site (December 8, 2013) using web photos of Marilyn combining my own thoughts via sayings and various Flickr logos. The Yahoo changes will undoubtedly affect the way we have been expressing ourselves creatively via digital art photography for many years.

When I began working on this, of course I found 100's of images of Monroe. Inexplicably, I found the right ones for the collage fairly easily. These, combined with various sayings and logos I felt would work and convey the Flickr situation came together in a way even better than I could've imagined.

Today as then, Marilyn's life story symbolizes one's quest to express their creativity in a way that is fulfilling to them. And as we know, for artists especially, some achieve it, some don't.
But that should never EVER keep one from trying. On Flickr and in all venues of expressing oneself, freedom of expression is first and foremost to hold on to tightly. And never let go.

Thank you all for comments. I appreciate them so very much.

I always intended for little Mero to have a little tiny Monroe piercing, but I could never find studs small enough to use..
NOW I HAVE THEMMMMM!!!!! (」°ロ°)」 YESSSS!!

He looks SO SO SO cute with it. Omg.
Just a quick shot, so forgive the messy-ness!

Please don't say you dislike him with a piercing because he's so cutesy. (´-ω-`);;
It was always intended that Mero will be rather edgy. Cute, but edgy. I mean he does have tatts, right? <3

We headed for Lake Michigan for sunrise again this morning. We were surprised to find some wind and waves in Monroe Harbor, with the boats rocking like crazy. The first attempts were nothing but fuzzy masts. I bumped the ISO up to 1000, something the D300 would not have let me get away with. Got the masts pretty sharp, but the geese were still just a hair blurry. Next time I'll just photoshop in some sharp geese.

Taken while descending from Mount Washington, New Hampshire, heading toward Mount Monroe, as part of a 19-mile "Presidential Traverse" day hike.

We tried this hike two weeks ago, but were shut down by bad weather (rain and 60+ mphs gusts on the summit of Mt Washington). So we went back to the deck, and this time, we drew an ace! =)

There are several flavors of this challenging long-distance hiking route. We went over the summits of Mts Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Clay, Washington, Monroe, Franklin and Pierce... the so called "minimal" traverse. =)

Clay and Franklin are not considered "official" summits by the AMC 4000 Footer Club, but they still require hiking uphill, on a long, quad-burning day of hiking uphill. Total elevation gain over this route is ~8,500 feet.

The "Lakes of the Clouds" and the AMC Lakes of the Clouds hut are visible here in the distance.

This was a strenuous but very rewarding day. I am very happy at 53 years of age to still be able to complete this hike (this was my fifth Traverse), and even more grateful for the company of good friends with whom to share these adventures in the mountains.

Hiking gives us a new appreciation of simple things - a juicy cheeseburger, a thick milkshake, an ice cold beer (not necessarily in that order), a hot shower, a soft bed and clean sheets, and (this morning) over-the-counter anti-inflammatories! =) Not to mention, of course, the camaradie and outstanding scenery we enjoyed along the way.

The full gallery of photos, mostly by me but some from my hiking buddy Kathy, can be found at jonathantr.zenfolio.com/1308pt.

Thank you for visiting!

Flickr Beauty ◇ The eyes of Marilyn Monroe (Enlarge Photo) ◇

found on web....this is one of the most heartbreaking yet at the same time, beautiful photos of Marilyn I have ever seen. It was processed thru a filtered lens I think.
The added color and contrast is mine to give her more of a glow but she didn't need it . In fact it made the photo even more sad.
Truly I don' t think any one person male or female EVER used the camera lens to their advantage like Monroe.
To look at this photo and say SEX SYMBOL ? God, I just don't see it.......... Sorrow, wistfulness and age beyond her years in those sad child's eyes.
That's what I see.

Monroe recognized photography as a tool to advance her career, and few celebrities have ever played better to the camera. “The first day a photographer took a picture of her she was a genius,” the director Billy Wilder once remarked. “She was not only a natural to the camera, but she had a sure knowledge of how to use that affinity. It was to her what water is to a fish. She exulted in it.”

Norma Jeane Mortensen Baker (June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962), professionally recognized as Marilyn Monroe, was an American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s.

After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946 with Twentieth Century-Fox. Her early film appearances were minor, but her performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950) drew attention to her. By 1953, Monroe had progressed to a leading role in Niagara (1953), a melodramatic film noir that dwelled on her seductiveness. Her “dumb blonde” persona was used to comic effect in subsequent films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and The Seven Year Itch (1955). Limited by typecasting, Monroe studied at the Actors Studio to broaden her range. Her dramatic performance in Bus Stop (1956) was hailed by critics, and she received a Golden Globe nomination. Her production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions, released The Prince and the Showgirl (1957), for which she received a BAFTA Award nomination and won a David di Donatello award. She received a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Some Like It Hot (1959). Monroe’s final completed film was The Misfits, co-starring Clark Gable with the screenplay written by her then-husband, Arthur Miller.

"I mean Marilyn Monroe she's quite nice, but why all the pretty icons always all white?" ~ Jay-Z

So, back to yesterday's questions. I use dual monitors so I can have a smoother workflow. I use 1 LED monitor and 1 LCD monitor. Here is where my dilemna comes into play. Sometimes people will say darken this up, lighten that up, etc... With the same brightness, contrast setting on both monitors I get two different results. LCD darkens my image, and LED lightens my image...So the question is; which one is more accurate? I would say LED is more accurate because it brings a more high dynamic range of color just like HDR strives to be...Opinions?

Flickr Jayne Mansfield & Marilyn Monroe

.... Jayne Mansfield often professed her admiration of Marilyn Monroe & expressed her desire to meet Monroe & perhaps even become friends with Marilyn. This photograph, shows as close as Jayne Mansfield ever got to Marilyn Monroe, the photo was taken at the 1955 premiere of "The Rose Tattoo". Marilyn Monroe, wanted nothing to do with Mansfield, she felt Jayne had piggybacked her whole career on hers & even mocked Monroe in a parody kind of way. Monroe & Mansfield both wanted what the other had, Monroe wanted children which Jayne had & Jayne wanted a career like Marilyn's. They did have some things in common, both were beautiful women, both were admired & recognized worldwide & tragically, both died too young....

this is my version of the newest attraction in the city of Chicago, the Marilyn Monroe statue with a little bit of a twist...i have noticed that this statue is always packed with tourists so i went to the city this morning a little early to shoot this scene and hoped to avoid the crowds...i was pretty glad to see that there was still no big crowds milling about Big Marilyn...in this shot, i was so happy with my granite bench reflection shot of the skyline from the other day that i decided to apply the same technique in this instance as well...there were numerous granite benches/planters around the courtyard so i looked for a good spot, comped the frame and placed my camera on the surface and clicked hoping for the best...happy to say that i was really elated with the result that i almost did the dance of joy in public....hope you guys enjoy this one as much as i do...pls. I found a wonderful B&W pic of Marilyn Monroe online and decided to play around with airbrush to give it an old fashioned, hand colored look. When I was little, my brother and I posed for a photographer who did our photos like that. I recall how pale the skin was, and how faded we looked in comparison to regular color prints. It was a neat effect, though.

I still prefer the original photo, but it was fun adding a little color to it! I'm sure the airbrush on the computer went light years faster than the old fashioned process. It would be interesting to learn how that was done someday, as well.

Monroe Street Bridge is a deck arch bridge that spans the Spokane River in Spokane, Washington. The bridge was the largest concrete-arch bridge in the United States at the time it was built. It was built in 1911 by the city of Spokane and was designed by John Chester Ralston and Kirtland Kelsey Cutter. At the time of completion it was the largest concrete-arch bridge in the United States and the third longest in the world.

The current bridge is actually the third bridge in this location. The first bridge, a rather rickety wooden structure, was built in 1889. The bridge was first closed due to arguments in the city over rites of passage and ownership. It then burned down in 1890 and then replaced with a steel bridge. The second bridge vibrated badly and had a noticeable dip in the center. A consultant from the Good Roads Movement considered the bridge unsafe in 1905. The design of the third bridge was largely copied from the Rocky River Bridge in Cleveland, Ohio, but was built one foot longer to make it the largest concrete arch in the United States at the time. The bridge was designed with ornamental features such as bison skulls, covered pavilions, and a chain-link railing motif. The bison skull was an inspiration of Patrick C. Shine who found it in Drumheller, Alberta, Canada, in the early 1900s.

The bridge underwent changes in 1925 and in 1934, and submitted to the modernization of Spokane. The pavilion lamps were changed to electric lighting in ’25 and the electric car railways were removed from the bridge in ‘34. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. By the 1990s, the current bridge had deteriorated to the point where rebuilding it was necessary. In January 2003, the bridge was closed for restoration, dismantled down to the central arch, and rebuilt faithfully to the original appearance. The bridge was reopened in 2005 and continues to provide excellent views of Spokane Falls. (Wikipedia)

Flickr Monroe - A Exposição

(Wikipedia)

MARILYN MONROE Wearing Desi Jewelry.

DESPITE BEING MOST DESIRABLE WOMAN OF HER TIME AND ALL THE RICHES, SHE WAS NOT HAPPY.

Biography

Marilyn Monroe personified Hollywood glamour with an unparalleled glow and energy that enamored the world. Although she was an alluring beauty with voluptuous curves and a generous pout, Marilyn was more than a '50s sex goddess. Her apparent vulnerability and innocence, in combination with an innate sensuality, has endeared her to the global consciousness. She dominated the age of movie stars to become, without question, the most famous woman of the 20th Century.

She was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California, to Gladys Baker. As the identity of her father is undetermined, she was later baptized Norma Jeane Baker. Gladys had been a film cutter at RKO studios, but psychological problems prevented her from keeping the job and she was eventually committed to a mental institution.

Norma Jeane spent most of her childhood in foster homes and orphanages until 1937, when she moved in with family friend Grace McKee Goddard. Unfortunately, when Grace's husband was transferred to the East Coast in 1942, the couple couldn't afford to take 16-year-old Norma Jeane with them. Norma Jeane had two options: return to the orphanage or get married.

On June 19, 1942 she wed her 21-year-old neighbor Jimmy Dougherty, whom she had been dating for six months. "She was a sweet, generous and religious girl," Jimmy said. "She liked to be cuddled." By all accounts Norma Jeane loved Jimmy, and they were happy together until he joined the Merchant Marines and was sent to the South Pacific in 1944.

After Jimmy left, Norma Jeane took a job on the assembly line at the Radio Plane Munitions factory in Burbank, California. Several months later, photographer David Conover saw her while taking pictures of women contributing to the war effort for Yank magazine. He couldn't believe his luck. She was a "photographer's dream." Conover used her for the shoot and then began sending modeling jobs her way. The camera loved Norma Jeane, and within two years she was a reputable model with many popular magazine covers to her credit. She began studying the work of legendary actresses Jean Harlow and Lana Turner, and enrolled in drama classes with dreams of stardom. However, Jimmy's return in 1946 meant Norma Jeane had to make another choice- this time between her marriage and her career.

Norma Jeane divorced Jimmy in June of 1946, and signed her first studio contract with Twentieth Century Fox on August 26, 1946.

THE ROSE...

Some say love it is a river
that drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
and you it's only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
who cannot seem to give
and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed
that with the sun's love
in the spring
becomes THE ROSE

Flickr Walton Monroe Mills, Inc.
Tags: monroe   historicdistrict   waltoncounty   nationalregisterofhistoricplaces   nrhp   smalltowngeorgia   monroeandwaltonmills
Monroe, GA (Walton County). Copyright 2007 D. Nelson

Walton Monroe Mills, Inc. was founded in 1895 by George Felker whose family had been established in Monroe County since 1820. Although he had to borrow most of the funds at high interest rates, the mill succeeded. In the early days, Felker employed only as many staff as absolutely necessary and ran the administrative office pretty much by himself. He wrote his letters in long hand and copied them (no such thing as cut-and-paste!) into the company books that served as archives. He inspected, weighed, classified, and purchased all the cotton for production and was his company's only salesman.

When his son, George Felker III, took over the company in 1962, the textile industry was undergoing major changes brought on by fierce foreign competition, tighter profit margins, and runaway technology. In 1964, a "Textile World" article warned mill owners to heed advancing trends or go out of business. George Felker III took the advice, streamlined his mill and carried it through the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1980, the third generation of Felkers took over the mills. G. Stephen Felker whose passion was with literature, Hemingway and Joyce in particular, unexpectedly became president of Walton Monroe. At first, sales began to drop, and Felker decided to take out a huge loan and upgrade his mill with state-of-the art equipment that not only addressed the current but also any future needs. This aggressive approach enabled the company to double its sales as well as weather the challenges several trade agreements (GATT, MFA, NAFTA) would bring. In 1984, Walton Monroe bought North Carolina's Dakotah Mills, and in 1986, Alabama's Avondale. The latter had been declining and was revived when Felker spent $ 40 million revamping it.

In 1993, Walton Monroe Mills Inc. employed 5,000 workers and averaged $ 500 million in sales per year. In January 2005, a train wreck near the Avondale Mill in Graniteville, SC killed eight people, six of whom were employed at Walton Monroe, and a $ 215 million settlement followed. Unable to recover from this setback, the company closed its Monroe headquarters and was sold off in 2006, leaving 4000 workers unemployed. At the time, it was run by the 4th generation, Stephen Felker Jr.

Today, the old mill district is in the process of being restored. The building on the left has already received new windows. The entire district encompasses 1200 acres and 236 buildings and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Behind this structure runs Madison Street with its row of old mill houses, most of them in pretty good shape. To the left is a Paintball operation, strangely out of place and surely doomed as renovation concludes.

Marilyn Monroe / Jackie Kennedy. This one is my favorite of the series, and here I juxtaposed Marilyn with her opposite (or arch rival) Jackie Kennedy. Same men in their lives... but Marilyn was known as the sensuous, sexy but "unstable" one and Jackie as the beautiful but totally composed "ice" princess... A very interesting balance of opposites. Here I used portraits made by Andy Warhol of each of the two women and their bodies and expressive hands are shared by a famous Ingres portrait. With Jackie's children tucked under her dress.

This series of five unpublished illustrations were created for a planned limited edition portfolio/book entitled "a whole lot of dead people and one resurrection". The illustrations depict images of individuals in history, art and mythology who have had characteristics either in common or directly opposite to their mirrored counterparts. The series was partly inspired by the human duality of goodness, evil, and other related opposites, and partly by the whim of playing cards...each illustration can be viewed from either side so that there is no visual "right side up".

All these illustrations date back to 1994, and were made using Photoshop 4, BEFORE LAYERS... quite a feat for that time.

Marilyn/Jackie, Mao/MostWantedMan, HenryVIII/Napoleon, Beria/Goebbels, Madonna&Child.

I am proud to say that this series of 5 illustartions won the Applied Arts contest , "The Best Advertising, Design, Photography and Illustration, in 1996 and was published in their Awards Annual.
