Years ago she used to have shares in a couple of Race Horses.... Last March... 2010, Mum saw a syndicate advertised for a horse that caught her eye... She liked his breeding, being Sired by 'Encosta De Lago'. She doesn't just 'bet' on the horses... she follows their form in detail... When she saw this Colts breeding she was instantly keen on him. So she took a share in the syndicate! I was so pleased for her and pleased to see her taking that interest again. Last month 'LORD ROBERTO' ran his first race... He jumped out well from the gate and ran second all the way... But was over taken on the straight to run 6th. Would have been nice to see him place, but he ran a good race! Today he ran his second race... Bolted from the gate again in first place... Ran another good race and seemed a lot more settled and in control... He fought on well to run a respectable 2nd in a photo finish! %-) I finished work early to watch the race with Mum... Ted Tom Bart and Barney came down to watch it too! They bought Mum a box of Cadbury Continental Chocolates to celebrate. It's an old family tradition from when I was a child... If Mum came home from the races with a box of Continentals... No editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :) Today the FIFA World Cup starts, and to make sure that everything goes smoothly, the fabulous Lord Bikenheimer decided to position herself as a living Roadblock in the downtown Amsterdam area, hoping that by channeling the stream of people in certain directions, she'll be able to positively contribute to the well-being and safety of locals and visitors alike, who roam the streets in search of the biggest outdoor screen and the cheapest beer... Personally I think it's rather cocky of a bike to expect to single-wheeledly warrant the safety of thens of thousands of drunk, excited people in a crazy place like Amsterdam, but since she's got to make up for the little incident she's got me in earlier this week, I figured why not let her give it her best shot, can't harm to try...and as you can tell by the happy faces of the tourists in this picture, they totally appreciate it, haha :) Have a great start of the World Cup, may your team win! This institution is named after Lord Edward Fitzgerald who was the 5th son of the Duke of Leinster. His Dublin Town House was Leinster House now the seat of our parliament. Lord Edward reached high rank in the English Army, and saw service in the American and West Indian Colonies. Because of his family background, he was given a seat in the Irish Parliament, which was housed in what is now the Head Office of the Bank of Ireland in College Green, Dublin. He soon realized that this was a puppet parliament. He became disillusioned with their policy rigging, and soon came to the notice of The United Irishmen (Free Ireland Movement). Because of his military experience, he was appointed Captain in charge of their forces, and helped plan the Abortive Rebellion of 1798 against the Crown with Robert Emmet , Wolfe Tone and Napper Tandy Due to the ever present paid informer of the Crown in Ireland's long history of insurrection, Lord Edward was arrested in his hiding place in nearby Thomas Street, prior to the date fixed for the rebellion. In resisting arrest he was severely wounded, and later died of his wounds in Newgate Jail on the North side of the river Liffey. He was aged thirty-five. He is buried in St. Werburgh's Church across the road from the side entrance. This is the first floor room. There's also a seafood restaurant in the place that's supposed to be very good, if somewhat pricey, but I've never been there. I won't have a bad word said about this place. He was married in France to the natural daughter of Madame de Genlis and Louis Philippe, later to become King of the French. lord edward was a leading conspirator of the United Irishmen who favoured a project for the massacre of the Irish peers while in procession to the House of Lords for the trial of Lord Kingston in May 1798. As a fellow member of the Ascendancy class, the Government were anxious to make an exception for FitzGerald, and also avoid the embarrassing and dangerous consequences of his subversive activities, communicating their willingness to spare him from the normal fate meted out to "traitors". The Lord Chancellor, Lord Clare, said to a member of his family, "for God's sake get this young man out of the country; the ports shall be thrown open, and no hindrance whatever offered." Arrest of Lord Edward FitzGerald The capture of Lord Edward FitzGerald, the most dangerous United Irish leader still at liberty, was now the top priority of Dublin Castle and on 9 May a reward of £1,000 was offered for his apprehension. Since the arrests at Bond's, FitzGerald had been in hiding, but had twice visited his wife in disguise and was himself visited by his stepfather. Meanwhile, the date for the rising was finally fixed for 23 May and Fitzgerald awaited the day hiding in a house in Thomas Street, Dublin. However, his hiding place was disclosed by a Catholic barrister and informer named Magan and on 18 May Major H. C. Sirr led a military party to the house where Lord Edward was in bed suffering from a fever. Alerted by the commotion, he jumped out of bed and, ignoring the pleas of the arresting officers Major Swan and Captain Ryan to surrender peacefully, FitzGerald stabbed Swan and mortally wounded Ryan with a dagger in a desperate attempt to escape. He was only secured after Sirr shot him in the shoulder and was beaten unconscious by the rifle butts of the soldiers. He was conveyed to Newgate Prison, and denied proper medical treatment where he died of his wounds as the rebellion raged outside on the 4 June 1798. Like Lord Howe Island Balls Pyramid is part of an erosional remnant of a massive shield volcano and caldera that formed about seven million years ago. Balls Pyamid is the last refuge of the Lord Howe Island Phasmid (Stick Insect) (Dryococelus australis) which was wiped out on Lord Howe Island by introduced rats and thought to be extinct until a small precarious 24 member colony was discovered on Balls Pyramid in 2001.An earlier photograph taken in 1964 of the insect on Balls Pyramid appears to have been dismissed by the Australian Museum who thought the insect to be extinct. The Space Glider is the vintage Mego sample pictured on Palisades' Micronauts packaging. He came to me bundled into a comp packet of misc stuff. His torso was badly cracked (which I've found on some vintage, still-packaged Micronauts) and his arms & waist are super-glued into a pose I recognized from Palisades' packaging. The Centaurus is a much later Palisades series 2 production sample (even though it has some uncolored parts like earlier test shots). We now know that the "Lord Lieutenant and Lady Aberdeen visited Waterford yesterday for the purpose of presenting the Fagan Shield (the gift of Sir John Fagan) to the St. Dominick Industrial School, conducted by the Good Shepherd Nuns ... At the City Hall, an address from the Corporation to Lady Aberdeen was read..." We've visited this room before, on Monday, 20 August 1928 for a "civic welcome" to a Fr. Walsh. From the newspaper report below, it looks as if this was taken at Waterford City Hall. Thanks to ofarrl, we're already ahead of the posse on this photo. We know that that the tremendously titled Sergeant-at-Mace, John Harrison, is in this photo. John was unearthed by his great great grand niece (think that's right), Mrslulu1 in this 1903 photo, alongside millionaire industrialist and library philanthropist Andrew Carnegie...
