Have had a couple of busy days and I'm leaving for a big trip again tomorrow, so I'm quite short on time which is why I haven't researched any history about this lovely abandoned house yet. Next time I'm posting a picture from this place I'll try and find some historic facts about it to share with you.
This room was most likely the living room. I really like the piano in this room.

For this photo I wanted to capture the idea that music is my most valuable possession as both a pianist as a consumer. I wasn't sure how to go about this photo in the beginning, because my idea only reached as far as the piano keys. I ended up seeing the strings in the background and thinking that it would make an interesting photo. I took the picture, but I was planning on substituting it with a picture of my ipod connected to headphones. I ended up liking the piano strings much more and decided to use that.

I think that these are clearly two different things. It is obvious that one is a line of strings and the other piano keys. However, they are both tied together by their universal use in music and their combination to create piano pieces. I think that it's interesting to see the two aspects of a piano because it is regarded as a string and a percussion instrument.

1) I chose this image for the mirror effect because I thought the piano would flip cleanly.
2) what I like most about the photo is that it looks like the piano path could go on forever.

Veteran bus enthusiasts who grew up with the old pre-war buses like the Piano-Fronted Leyland must have scoffed at the uninteresting Bristol K's and all-Leyland PD2's the way people like myself did at those horses of horrible screaming NBC National Mk1's. Lincolnshire BBE 187 is very nice but I know which of the two that captures my imagination the best.

Abandoned piano (of all things) on the Canadian Pacific's ex-Milwaukee Bloomingdale Line. The line has been abandoned/out of service for years, and work is currently underway to turn it into a trail similar to New York's High Line. In this photo, though, it sits unused, much like the piano.

As I left the Americana Theater I saw this piano and a poster pointing out that some winner of a TV talent show that I don't watch was going to perform a little later. Suffice it to say, I didn't stick around to find out who it was or to listen to them perform. But I did like the piano; it complimented the tree.

In the summer of 1973, in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do, my sister and I would ride our bikes and see what we could see. We found this school, which was built in 1910, and we believed it was abandoned.

Behind the school was a swing set. We spent a lot of time there and never saw another soul.

There was a heavy kind of ghostly feel about the place, its age, its silence, its standing there alone by the side of a winding road, overlooking farmland hemmed in by high hills. It was hot that summer. There were grasshoppers in near-Biblical numbers and dry wells and long empty shapeless days we filled with movement - walking, biking, exploring and, at the school, swinging.

So there I was on Sunday, nearly 40 years later, outside the same school, in the same heavy heat, the silence broken only by grasshoppers, ravens and, now and then, a train. The swings were gone and the building had a nice new paint job, but all else was just as I remembered.

I was about to leave when... just for the hell of it... I tried the back door. It wasn't locked. And so I pushed it open and could not believe my luck.

Not just the one-room school itself but its ages old crispy-crunching carpet of dead flies, and the ancient piano, badly out of tune but glowing with its pearly inlay. And desks - desks of the period. With curlicued iron legs that screwed to the floor, and all else solid wood.

I was short on time; the sun was close to setting and I struggled to calm my excitement enough to plan and organize and shoot something other than the usual scenes of flies on window sills and close-ups of detailed iron work on desks. So yeah. When all else fails. Fall back on the old fallback.

I considered writing something on the blackboard, but that seemed somehow wrong. Like the piano, it is exactly as I found it.

Flickr The Piano Room.

This pinhole photo from first semester was my very favorite picture from photo 1. It was my long exposure. I was really nervous about doing this project because I felt very out of control, just leaving my camera open for the weekend. In the end the lighting and contrast of this picture turned out almost perfect, and this photo looks just like the piano room at my house.

One of the most beautiful room boxes that I have ever seen. The vintage light and the dining room furniture are masterpieces.Do you know what's the company that used to manufactured all these?

diePuppenstubensammlerin
Thank you!
The room box is the upper floor of a 60s dolls house, by Grünhainichen or its successor VERO, I suppose. The basement is lost. Someone has put electricity and many many big switches on the floor which I removed all, and he added the build-in shelves on the left which I find very attractive.
The rest of the room is just as I found it.
The furniture in this first post is mostly by Altmann, all of the 60s, later the firm did no longer exist. The piano and the lamp however are by Bodo Hennig, from the 60s, too. The piano stool is taken from an old bedroom set.

Rebecca13. April 2012
I enjoyed clicking through these photos in the enlarged view - almost like watching a movie, seeing the furniture and carpets go in and out!
I like the first carpet you used, though I think the one in photo 9 could work too. I think I'd like a red curtain on the left corner of the room too, to balance the one on the right. Then I would try all the lounge suites again! But probably you have already tried some new variations - maybe you'll show us?

For anyone that has ever visited my stream or left me a nice comment... thank you and yes I love you really I do!

My sweet flickr friend Kyla tagged me so here I go!
1. If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Jesus Christ and I'm pretty stoked that I will actually meet him one day :)

2. What did you wanna be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a vet when I was growing up. I actually went to college to become a Vet Tech and went through about 1 1/2 years of schooling till they asked us to dissect a cat so I dropped out ... wasted a lot of time and money :( I know I'm lame.

3. What's your biggest asset?
Besides my baby Troy!? :) I think I'm a kind and sincere person that only has love to give :) <3

4. What's your favorite late night snack?
Ehhh don't really like eating late at night unless there's cookies around :D

5. If money were no object, what would you like to do?
I would want to take care of all my family and made sure each and every one of them was going to live a compfortable life. I would want to travel around the world ( well where it was safe to travel at least). I would eventually want to move out of California too.

6. Name one talent you wish you had.
Hmm I wish I could play an instrument like the piano or guitar. I know I still could but I feel to old now lol

7. If you knew then, what you know now.
I'd say things wouldn't be much different. I've certainly have my share of mistakes and lack of maturity but I know I'm in a good place in my life right now.

8. Would you rather take a dip in a lake or the ocean?
The ocean fo sho! ;)

9. what are your 2 favorite movies?
I'm going to sound like the biggest nerd but Finding Nemo and The Notebook ;)

10. List 3 things you'd like to achieve in 2011.
(1) Get more serious about my photography and step up my game!
(2) Have a better schedule with my day... I'm kinda lazy when I'm at home and don't always get everything done a lot has to with killing time on photoshop or going shopping.
(3) Get more fit... right now I'm battling with a few extra pounds that won't go away so I really to get my booty moving!

Flickr In an artistic mood

This photo was taken in a small corner of the living room, where I place my piano. In this room, beside the piano, I also put some paintings and decorative stuffs to make it more elegant. It is unfortunate that within the limited frame of this shot, I cannot capture all of the things. The atmosphere I create in this shot is artistic, deluxe and serene. It is true, as it is stated in the title, that I was in a mood of high inspiration and full of artistic passion. I decided to use monochrome effect to give the photo a sensational feeling. The light in this photo is soft, and the interesting point is the reflection of my body on the piano. It is like the piano is a mirror that can reflect the whole emotion of mine in such a truthful way. Since this is an indoor shot, the scene is small, yet the advantage is that the subject is framed in a relatively tidy space so that the viewers are not distracted and therefore, they can contemplate the photo better.

Much like the piano shot, I'm trying for something different here. the guy wouldn't keep still for a moment so it was hard to catch him, here I concentrated focus on the left hand on the neck of the guitar. I de-saturated a bit just enough to keep the red in the head of the guitar. I liked the reflection of the left hand on the neck.

Why? WHY?! I'll tell you WHY!!

I've been chosen to play piano at my church's Christmas program!

I know, cool right? Especially since anywhere from two THOUSAND to five THOUSAND people will be there. And it's not like the piano is some bit part this year - I can't hide behind the full orchestra with songs like these:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr98_TfCLV0

www.youtube.com/watch?v=alIcwofkrS8

SQEE!!!

So, here's the deal: I believe that you, my flickr friends, have been instrumental to my success as a musician. That's right! When I was frustrated and down about piano, you guys were always there to encourage me. So, if you're in the D.C. area (I'm looking at you, Toshio & Roberto), you MUST (MUST MUST MUST) come! I'll even buy the tickets for you I’m so serious!

Because honestly, I don't know when I'll ever be able to play at such a large event like this again. It's a huge deal and I want as many of my friends as possible to be there and that includes you all! So if you can be in the D.C. area on December 17th or 18th, let me know and I'll have them keep your tickets at Will Call.

And thank you for your hugely important support! I cannot thank you enough for your understanding. I'm not going to have alot of time for Flickr until the new year because there's alot of material to learn for the Christmas program in addition to my usual piano workload. So, just know that I love your work even if I can't comment on it right now.

"L.E."

P.S. Thank you, Daddy, for the picture! :-)

I pay a visit at fairy falls last saturday along with my few friends.
Such a nice place to visit it is a part of vast Waitakere Ranges Regional Park that includes more than 16,000ha of native rainforest and coastline. Its 250km of walking and tramping tracks provide access to beaches, breathtaking vistas, spectacular rocky outcrops, streams, waterfalls and farms overlooking the wild west coast.

Award-winning movies like 'the Piano' and popular TV shows 'Xena' and 'Hercules', all filmed here, give the park an international profile.

Tags: nature   death   und   pittsburgh   beethoven   orchestra   tod   mozart   symphony   transfiguration   manfred   javadoug   honeck   verklärung   douglasbauman
Penny Anderson Brill, Viola, and musician of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, introduced the concert on Saturday night at Heinz Hall. Her introduction was very much an appreciation, by the musicians, for the audience. The orchestra even gave the audience a round of applause. Her final tribute: "Thank you so much for all that you do for us and now I hope you enjoy the concert"

Manfred Honeck entered the stage, and after one bow, began conducting the composition: "Tod und Verklärung" by Richard Strauss. This was my first chance to hear this piece live. I remember being impressed by the low drums at the beginning. I began to think to myself, what does this music mean to me? I found the juxtaposition of the words in the title interesting: Death (first) then Transfiguration. Words and music have temporal meanings, and this time I thought perhaps that this music was supposed to represent death, as only a beginning, and the further meaning beyond, and a contemplation of what that concept might entail, without prior knowing. And transfiguration, coming after death, what could it be -- is it a higher place? Is it like Earth and Heaven, as opposed to Heaven and Earth -- does the order truly come in a sequential fashion, or is it a concept that transcends time, in a manner that we truly cannot easily perceive, yet. All these thoughts came to mind, and flowed through the music. This was truly a beautiful score, and one that I enjoyed; and even though this isn't the first time I've heard this music, it somehow seemed to be the first time for a true appreciation.

The piano concerto with soloist Yefim Bronfman, was the logical follow up to the previous piece, or at least that was my initial thought: that this was sort of like a transfiguration in and of itself. The drama in the introduction of the first movement was appealing. The bases and deeper harmony seemed to dominate, with the violins following suit. Then the piano joined it, and what followed was beautiful, in its entirety this Mozart Concerto Number 24 is one of my favorites.

To whoever I overheard exclaiming at intermission: 'I liked the piano concerto, but I didn't really like the first piece', I must urge you to give new music a chance. To sample new music over a period of years. I think this kind of music grows on you. If you give it a chance, someday you'll be coming to the concert for the prospect of finding new gems in the repertoire.

Next up: Honeck and Beethoven, a fitting combination. I watched, I saw Maestro Honeck conduct, then I truly saw. I saw his movements, his style, his interpretations, his pizazz, his mechanisms, his mind, and the music that was there, and it was beautiful.

Honeck has a particular style, but there is much more than that, it is a substance which spells in the universal language of classical music, and flourishes with abstract verve spun into specific directions for the orchestra and each and every musician. Honeck brings to me a splendid rendition of Beethoven's Symphony number seven, perhaps my favorite, if one can pick a favorite. This symphony opens with a long introduction to the first movement, like the first steps into a beautifully wooded landscape, then the full bodied movement eventually begins.

Honeck's motions sum up the conducting. Hand motions left and right, full sweeping motions back and forth representing increased volume, then for a softer quieter part, a straight upright posture and simple movements of the baton. The conductor has a knack for being soft spoken, and in movements, it's almost the same thing -- I seem to think he isn't moving all that much, his stature straight, and subtle, and tall, then suddenly, his round repeated motions of his arms and some subtle up and down of his body in a fluid and effective outpouring of physical emotion connect to the orchestra. They respond. The sound is perfect, like this symphony from Beethoven, the perfect symphony, the perfect orchestra, and the best conductor for the match: a great combination.

The second movement, one of the most touching movements I know, almost haunting, begins. It comes through this time with sublime effect. Now I think back to the connection of the music for this evening, the transfiguration. This movement is Beethoven's transfiguration, there is nothing else like it. It transcends my soul, goes deeper and evokes more emotion than any other music I know. The tempo is good, but I find myself wanting more, and it is over.

Now the third movement, what a change-up. It's all part of that theme again, the transfiguration: this time from the deeply moving to the presto, chango, and voila -- it's upbeat and moving along at a quicker pace, almost racing. Now its fun with sort of playful melodic sounds, it gets my feet tapping, and my legs moving, and I see the same with the conductor: he is hopping and moving and again animating the orchestra into this joyous music.

Finally we go from the quick to the fast, the final movement. It's really moving now, almost like a race. When I see Manfred Honeck conduct this movement, I truly begin to see a sort of link to Beethoven. And now I imagine what it must be like to see Beethoven, himself, conducting this symphony for the first time. And I hear it as well.

Honeck seems subtle, serious and deliberate, yet effective when conducting. After the music is done, he finally dons a smile so wide and brimming, it is infectious, and this effect along with the beautiful music from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra affects the entire audience as they simultaneously leap to their feet to applaud, faster than I've ever seen them go into a standing ovation before. And we are rewarded with a symphonic encore, he and the PSO give us all a preview of the concert they will be playing on tour in a week in China. We get to hear the final movement of Haydn's Symphony No. 88, and a treat it was!

This is Bette. She is my (1st) "victim" for the 100 Strangers Group. My daughter is home from school today, so we went to the drive-thru at Chick-Fil-A. As we pulled in, Bette was standing outside, in front of the entrance, with a basket in her hand, talking to some people walking in. From the minute I saw her gorgeous red top, gorgeous red lips (and fingernails to match), and stunning white hair, I knew instantly, she was the one, and there just so happened to be an empty space right in front of her! So, I pulled in, while my daughter, who was totally mortified, shrunk down in her seat. I told Bette I was part of a project where I needed to take 100 pictures of 100 strangers, and would she mind being the first. She laughed. She said she didn't take good pictures. I told her otherwise. I told her she was beautiful and I HAD to take her picture. :-) So, off to clicking I went. I did let her look through the photos, and this is the one she picked. Here is a little bit about Bette.

1. Her full name is Bette Baldwin (like the piano she told me.)

2. She is a retired English school teacher - the reason why I am actually using caps in this description. I figured Bette would be highly disappointed if I didn't.

3. She married a veterinarian, and loves animals. She has 5 cats and 2 dogs.

4. She's lived in the Panhandle of Florida all of her life.

5. She works part-time at Chick-Fil-A to give her something to do. The basket was full of mints that she hands out as people are leaving. She also wipes the tables off. She loves to meet new people. She certainly loved meeting me, she said. She thought I was a bit quirky. :-) Imagine that.

6. I heart Bette, and I'm glad I met someone new today.

I first started doing this type of leaf patterns 30 years ago. In 1977 I had been gilding the Harley Bar and Shield logo, HD Eagle and HD lettering for several years. Arlen Ness brought me a photograph of a concert grand piano that had goldleaf decoration on the area above the keys. He asked if I would do "something similar" on his paint job. I only used dagger striping brushes at the time and developed this style based on the tightest radius lines I could render with a #000 Mack brush. The accent striping around the leaf work came about because Arlen always wanted, and asked for "extra lines". In the end it looked nothing like the piano but Arlen liked it as did everyone else. During these thirty years I have done these designs on cars, vans, trucks, motorcycles, signs, helmets and even two snowmobiles.

LKS TO CHILDREN keys against the wires stretched across a board. Thewires lie down in the square piano, but stand in the up-rights. There are many makers of pianos. The sweetness oftone in the piano depends upon the wood that is usedand the care with which each part is fashioned and puttogether, just as in the case of the vioHn. It is called the pianoforte from two Italian wordspiano, which means soft, and forte, which means loud. The pedals at the base gave it this name, for by pressingone the tone becomes soft, and by pressing the other, loud. Before the pianoforte, people played on the clavi-chord and harpsichord, virginal and spinet, all of whichwere much like the piano, except for the pedals whichchanged the tone from loud to soft. Much of the worlds best music was composed onthese instruments which were used before the piano ofour day was made. Improvements are being madeall the time on this, and I sometimes wonder what sortof instrument will make music a few centuriesahead of us.
