On Tuesday I flew to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands for my usual mid winter warm weather break. The next day 8th January the weather was sunny but with streaks of wispy white cloud lasting all day, ideal for sunset colours. This was taken on the Playa Grande beach Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote about 2 hours before high tide.

The picture was taken on a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 15 mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs. As the brightest image did not provide enough detail in the rocks I used the plus 2EV RAW image to create an extra exposure a further 2 EV brighter.

The picture was enhanced with HDR processing, Topaz and Photoshop to bring in more detail.

Panoramic view late afternoon before sunset, Lanzarote Island, Canarias, Spain.

From lanzarote.com:

El Golfo is a natural amphitheatre open to the sea which was formed from the volcanic eruptions of 1730. The lagoon, which fills the base of this semicircular crater, is a result of flooding, and its green colour is from the algae that inhabit its waters.
The volcano made of porous lava ash has through the action of time given rise to spectacular formations.
The sea connected underground, passes through the crater forming a beautiful black beach, which contrasts with the green lagoon.
This lake has been declared a Natural Reserve which prohibits bathing.

Cueva de los Verdes , the Green Caves is a part of a large lava tunnel system in northern Lanzarote. The caves can only be accessed as part of a guided tour every 20 minutes. In the caves artificial but subtle lighting has been added. This view is at the end of the Tour in the upper gallery.

I have taken a shot from this viewpoint for the last 2 years. The first was with the standard wide angle. The second with the same lens but with multiple shots combined for a Vertorama. This year I tried out the fisheye lens. It was surprising that with this view and the lens level and not pointing up or down there is little apparent distortion only the wider field of view,

The picture was taken with a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Samyang Fisheye lens at 8 mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

This was taken on the Playa Grande beach Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote at not far off high tide and was a 104 second exposure.

For this image I wanted to try something different so used processing to make the sea mono and whiter and leave colour in the foreground and sky.

The picture was taken on a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10 mm. Processing started with adjustments in Camera RAW for better detail and exposure.

Further adjustments were made in Topaz and Photoshop.

The Shot

This was taken on the Playa Grande beach Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote at close to high tide. The ideal weather for a good sunset is high white cloud which the sun shines through. The day developed like this and the sunset followed just to order. There were also some good waves coming in and I used my recently acquired ND 8 filter which reduces light by 3 stops to get a soft feel to the waves. The HDR exposures were 1/3 sec, 1.3 sec and 5 seconds

The picture was taken on a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10 mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

Photomatix

Outputted in Photomatix to detail enhancer. Click the Camera name top right for Exif details and the settings used.

Photoshop

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance.

The colours needed very little adjustment, Vibrance layer increase 31 points

The +2EV exposure was added in as a new layer. A black layer mask was added by holding alt while clicking the mask icon. Note that with an existing mask eg white which is the default for adjustment layers the colour of the mask can be changed from white to black and vice versa by clicking the mask to select it and then holding ctrl while pressing I for Invert. In this case a white brush was used on the black mask to bring more detail into the rocks with the extra exposure in this layer.

Layers flattened before going on to sharpening

First duplicate layer Noiseware Pro and a little sharpening

Second duplicate layer with mask to apply extra sharpening and contrast with low amount and high radius using Unsharp mask (Clarity Effect) The settings were 60 amount and 60 radius.

Another duplicate layer was used for Topaz Adjust to bring back more detail using HDR Presets, Dynamic Pop with adjustments. In Photoshop the effect was brought down a little by reducing the opacity of the layer used for Topaz to 86%.

The end of the runway for Arrecife Airport, Lanzarote is on the coast. Between the sea and the Perimeter fence there is a footway and cyclepath which runes from Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife. This is a brilliant location to get shots of planes roaring in to land about 50ft overhead.

The picture comprises a blend of 4 images taken in quick succession of the planes approach. Taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken handheld. The main image with the nearest Plane image was opened in Camera Raw and 2 additional images were created at -2EV and +2Ev for a “false HDR”. The 3 raw images were opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

Photomatix

Outputted in Photomatix to detail enhancer. Click the Camera name top right for Exif details and the settings used.

Photoshop

The 3 earlier images in the sequence were opened in Photoshop and pasted into the main image. For each layer a layer mask and brush were used to show only the plane in each layer. To correct for camera movement between images the move tool was used to line up the layers. Each layer was also selected in turn and the transform- rotate tool used to line up the planes better.

General adjustments in levels and to enhance with layer mask to exclude highlights.

Vibrance adjustment plus 44.

Layers flattened before going on to Topaz. Topaz adjust used to bring back more detail using vibrant detail with adjustments with a layer mask to exclude most of the sky

First duplicate layer Noiseware Pro and a little sharpening.

Second duplicate layer for clarity effect using Unsharp mask with settings of amount 47 and radius 47

The Shot

Mirador del Río is a viewpoint situated on an approximately 475 meters high escarpment called Batería del Río in the very north of the Canarian island of Lanzarote.

The location was created in 1974 by the local artist César Manrique in his typical style, consisting of a balustraded cafe, a souvenir shop and a platform on its top. These are integrated in the lava rock.

Mirador del Rio provides a stunning view over the strait of Rio towards the island of La Graciosa

This picture is taken in the entrance corridor looking back towards the entrance.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken handheld at ISO 1600 for short enough shutter speeds. Tripods are allowed here but I wanted more flexibility. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

This picture is taken looking along the balcony with the island of La Graciosa in the distance.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

Flickr Crater Rim Star Trails Lanzarote
Tags: sky   night   stars   landscape   photography   star   volcano   surreal   lanzarote   wideangle   astronomy   startrails   sony700
The Shot

Note there is no Exif info for this shot as the Startrails stacking software removes it.

This was my second go at Star Trails. The most important requirement is a clear night in an area as free from light pollution as possible. The moon was not due to rise until after midnight.

This was taken from the floor of the crater Montana Cuervo near Masdache, Lanzarote. It is not as well visited as many places on the Island despite its exceptional beauty. It requires an easy 20 minute flat walk on a footpath from the road to the base of the Crater. Round the right hand side there is a great gash in the Crater wall permitting easy access to the crater floor. There are large numbers of rocks scattered across the Crater floor.

The star trails turned out better than I expected. Although it was clear at sunset, by the time I started shooting a lot of light cloudy patches had moved in obscuring some of the stars at times. This caused gaps in the Star trails. It was essential to keep the Tripod steady with what felt like a gale blowing into the crater through the gap. I solved this by pushing the Tripod legs well into the loose regolith of the crater floor.
There are 2 methods, either one long exposure of 20 minutes plus or a lot of shorter exposures later blended together. The problem with the first is if something goes wrong such as a walker with a flashlight or condensation you can lose the whole thing so I went for the second. It would normally be very time consuming to blend all the pictures together but there is now free software available to do it for you at www.startrails.de/html/software.html

With the method of stacking together shorter exposures noise is not such an issue so I turned off the Cameras noise reduction settings. If these are turned on it doubles the exposure length as a second image is taken automatically of the same length for the noise reduction process. Noise was corrected later with software. Also a higher ISO is required to get the stars to register in 30 seconds so I used ISO 800 and f4.5

The circular pattern is formed by pointing the camera towards Polaris the Pole Star near the Plough. As the Earth turns stars more above the pole do not appear to move as much as those more above lower latitudes. I had with me an HTC Android Smart Phone with the Google Sky App. This enabled me to locate the pole star while there was still light. The foreground comprises an HDR image taken while there was still light. With the Camera and Tripod locked in position the star trail images were taken later when the stars were out. It is necessary to wait for Astronomical Night which on that night was an hour and 20 minutes after Sunset. I used wunderground.com for the location which has an Almanac section which includes that. This is the time when all light from the sun has left the sky and the maximum number of stars is available.

The light on the horizon is the light from the small town of Tinajo to the north of the crater. Most light pollution was behind me from the main resorts 8 miles away and mainly hidden by the crater rim.

I took some test exposures to check the stars showed up. Unlike my first Star Trails picture taken in the UK I had no problem with condensation fogging the lens. Lanzarote is a very dry almost desert like climate
The image was taken over 40 minutes with 80 images of 30 seconds exposures each stacked with the startrails software. I set the camera to continuous mode and used a wireless shutter release to lock the shutter so the exposures were taken continuously without needing to touch the Camera
- Sony A700.
- ISO 800, f4, 30 seconds, 10mm.
- Sigma 10-20 lens.
- Tripod.
- Wireless Shutter Release

Tips
- Arrive early, bring a compass or Smartphone, to help find the north star.
- Setup gear while it’s still light, get your composition and wait.
- Shoot test shots, check light, make sure you can see the first stars.
- Wait for that perfect moment, then start the exposure.
- Bring a torch, so you can find you way and make adjustments after dark.
- Bring warm clothing and a snack and drink.

Photoshop

For the Star Trails the stacking software works on jpegs which are then saved as a Tiff. I opened this in Camera Raw. This is done by the file menu in Photoshop and Open as and choosing Camera Raw from the file types. To enhance the Star Trails exposure was increased by 2EV, contrast +8, clarity +100 and Vibrance +56

After opening in Photoshop general adjustments in curves to increase lightness and contrast and bring up more star trails.

Contrast increased by 33. Saturation yellows reduced to tone down the light pollution

After flattening the image duplicate layers were brought up to first apply Topaz DeNoise at a very strong level. Then another layer for Topaz Adjust Vibrance presets, Detail strong 2 with some adjustments to further bring out the Star Trails.

For the foreground this was a standard 3 shot HDR taken with light still in the sky with some enhancement in Topaz. I then selected the sky using the quick selection tool, inverted the selection to select just the foreground. Then copied the selection and pasted it in to the Star Trails picture. I used the move tool to line it up with the foreground in the Star Trails picture which was a black silhouette. Some pixel level cloning was done along the line of the join to remove some bright areas which came across from the foreground image

This was taken on the Playa Grande beach Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote at low tide. This week in Lanzarote there has been a lot of scattered thin clouds making for some good sunrises and sunsets. With the beach just 10 minutes walk away, a late sunrise of 07.50 and warm temperatures it gives a good incentive to get out and take photos.

The picture was taken on a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10 mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

Photoshop

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance with layer masks to exclude the Sun.

Vibrance layer increase 47 points

Hue Saturation layer saturation increased in reds and yellows to improve the sunrise colours.

A note that as per my usual workflow before applying Topaz and sharpening I flattened all layers. Then a duplicate layer to apply Noiseware and initial sharpening and another duplicate layer on top for Topaz when used or extra Unsharp mask so a layer mask can be used to exclude areas if necessary. Some filters and tools do not work with a lot of adjustment layers.

First duplicate layer Noiseware Pro and a little sharpening

Second duplicate layer for topaz adjust, HDR presets, dynamic pop 2 with some adjustments and addition of a light vignette.

Slight straightening of the horizon was needed. As there was nothing round the edges to worry about when cropping I used the semi auto method in Photoshop. Ruler tool used to draw a line along the horizon and then clicked straighten in the top options.

Hier entstanden damals 32 Vulkankegel.

Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Teguise
Teguise is a Canarian municipality in the north-central and the eastern portion of the island of Lanzarote in the Las Palmas province in the Canary Islands.
The main industries are agriculture and tourism. The Atlantic Ocean is to the northwest and east and the mountains are around the municipality.
The town was founded in 1414. Teguise served as the capital of the island until the capital moved to Arrecife in 1852 (Source: Wikipedia).

The most recent took place in 1824. The eruptions, for the eighteenth century, affecting a total of 195.20 km2, rising volcanic cones related to tectonic fractures have an orientation ENE - WSW. In 1824 took place in Lanzarote last eruptive episode. Made their debut three new volcanic cones: Tao, Tinguatón or New Volcano and the Volcano New Fire or The china cabinet, the latter is the only representative of this period within the park boundaries.

Still remembers the past with the demonstration of high surface temperatures, geothermal anomalies, they arise from the existence of a deposit or residual magma chamber, located relatively near the surface, between 4 to 5 km deep, making it possible register temperatures up to 610 º C to only 13 m deep and between 100 and 200 ° C at ground level.

The spectacular landscape of Lanzarote, like the rest of the Canary Islands, is due to its volcanic origin. Their historical (marked by intense volcanic activity for millions of years) has made it today. It is thus the result of natural disasters that are likely to recur.

It is located in the south of the island in the Municipality of Yaiza.
The village of El Golfo can be found a few metres away, where you can enjoy various restaurants facing the sea (lanzarote.com).

Graciosa Island
Graciosa Island or commonly La Graciosa (Spanish for graceful) is a volcanic island in the Canary Islands of Spain, located 2 km north of the island of Lanzarote with the strait named Río. It was formed by the Canary hotspot. The island is part of Parque Natural del Archipiélago Chinijo, Reserve of the Biosphere, "Marine Reserve of La Graciosa and the islands to the North of Lanzarote" it is linked to the municipality of Teguise. The island forms a part of the Chinijo Archipelago. The village is in the southeastern part of the island with houses encircling the harbor which has two piers and a yacht area in the bay. The only two settlements are Caleta del Sebo and summer-residence Casas de Pedro Barba. The island is entirely made up of volcanic rock and sands.

The population is 700. Tourism is the main industry along with fishing. Every year, tourists flock to the island for its tempered climate and its sandy volcanic coasts. The island has a school, lyceum, post office, supermarkets, a bank, port, beaches, and — except bar-restaurants — a square where bicycles can be hired (plaza).

Streets and roads on La Graciosa are unpaved sand. The Gracioseras can often be seen early each morning sweeping the streets smooth of the previous night's footprints. Motor vehicles are strictly prohibited and limited to a handful of licensed vehicles for special purposes. Since the roads are bad, and cars have to be shipped to Lanzarote for repair, about 70% of the motor vehicles on the island are old Land Rovers which often can be repaired by a local serviceman (source: Wikipedia).

Timanfaya National Park or Parque Nacional de Timanfaya is in the southwestern part of the island of Lanzarote (Canary Islands) of Spain. The parkland is entirely made up of volcanic soil. Volcanic activity continues as the surface temperature in the core ranges from 100 to 600 ºC at the depth of 13m, which is demonstrated by pouring water into the ground, resulting in a geyser of steam which is an attraction for tourists. In 1993, UNESCO granted the qualification for the Biospherical Reserve.
