Flickr Castillo de Guanapay - Lanzarote
Tags: lanzarote   paisaje   canarias   castillo   quolo   fql

Mural of plants and flowers from Lanzarote (Canary Islands).

The architecture of the island has been influenced by the weather. White is the predominant color of the houses, works as a mirror to the sun, allowing not raise the temperature inside.
Pitched roofs and patios concretized are inclined seek to collect the scarce rainwater ponds to collect it in stone. Flat roofs decorated with typical decorations hat-shaped or dome. Green is the color that predominates in doors and windows, it is because in the past fishermen used the remnants of paint, having painted their boats. Traditional architecture also has a colonial touch.
Portuguese and Andalusian influences have led to a particular architecture, such as the typical wooden balconies hanging from the facade and interior courtyards, and skylights typical of Teguise, for example. The interior of the houses is usually very sober. The houses are often decorated with ceramics and pottery.

Timanfaya is one of the most stunning landscapes on Earth. Fifty square kilometers of a bankrupt by the uncontrollable fury of nature scenery. Volcanic eruptions in the period 1730-1736 and the short but intense quarter of 1824 devastated a quarter of the area of Lanzarote. The immensity of geological crack (16 kilometers) explains the amount of lava and scope of the cast that buried villages (including Ximanfaya) and expanded the boundaries of the island. The stage, also known as the Fire Mountains, is a picture of a sublime beauty. A violent and abrupt box trapping for its winding shapes and contours, colors pot volcanoes and the mystical aura that hovers over the place. A natural area of incalculable value recognized with the greatest figure of Spanish environmental protection, the title of National Park (1974).

The valley of La Geria, which has been declared a 'Protected Area', is Lanzarote’s main wine-growing region, occupying about 20 square miles (52 square kilometres) and stretching on both sides of the road from Masdache to Uga and right up to the volcanic slopes.

Located on the edge of the badlands and covered with black volcanic ash, the vineyards of La Geria valley look like they have been transplanted here from another planet. The Lanzaroteños found an indigenous way of cultivating vines on this arid and hostile ground. They dug more than 10,000 funnel-shaped hollows into the thick layers of picón (coarse volcanic ashes), planted the vines, only one vine per hollow, filled them with soil and poured thick layers of picón over it, as the porous volcanic granules ideally retain the night humidity to feed the plants. In order to protect them from the constant winds and drying out, they built low, semicircular walls around them.

On Tuesday I flew to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands for my usual mid winter warm weather break. The next day 8th January the weather was sunny but with streaks of wispy white cloud lasting all day, ideal for sunset colours. This was taken on the Playa Grande beach Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote about 2 hours before high tide.

The picture was taken on a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 15 mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs. As the brightest image did not provide enough detail in the rocks I used the plus 2EV RAW image to create an extra exposure a further 2 EV brighter.

The picture was enhanced with HDR processing, Topaz and Photoshop to bring in more detail.

I got up early one morning while staying at the Iberostar Papagayo Hotel in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote as i wanted to create a sunrise image. I took three bracketed images -2,0 and +2 stops with my Canon EOS 550D set at iso 100 and my aperture set at f11. I created an hdr image using Photomatix, the lens i used was my 18-55mm kit lens.

The end of the runway for Arrecife Airport, Lanzarote is on the coast. Between the sea and the Perimeter fence there is a footway and cyclepath which runes from Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife. This is a brilliant location to get shots of planes roaring in to land about 50ft overhead.

The picture comprises a blend of 4 images taken in quick succession of the planes approach. Taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken handheld. The main image with the nearest Plane image was opened in Camera Raw and 2 additional images were created at -2EV and +2Ev for a “false HDR”. The 3 raw images were opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

Photomatix

Outputted in Photomatix to detail enhancer. Click the Camera name top right for Exif details and the settings used.

Photoshop

The 3 earlier images in the sequence were opened in Photoshop and pasted into the main image. For each layer a layer mask and brush were used to show only the plane in each layer. To correct for camera movement between images the move tool was used to line up the layers. Each layer was also selected in turn and the transform- rotate tool used to line up the planes better.

General adjustments in levels and to enhance with layer mask to exclude highlights.

Vibrance adjustment plus 44.

Layers flattened before going on to Topaz. Topaz adjust used to bring back more detail using vibrant detail with adjustments with a layer mask to exclude most of the sky

First duplicate layer Noiseware Pro and a little sharpening.

Second duplicate layer for clarity effect using Unsharp mask with settings of amount 47 and radius 47

The Shot

Mirador del Río is a viewpoint situated on an approximately 475 meters high escarpment called Batería del Río in the very north of the Canarian island of Lanzarote.

The location was created in 1974 by the local artist César Manrique in his typical style, consisting of a balustraded cafe, a souvenir shop and a platform on its top. These are integrated in the lava rock.

Mirador del Rio provides a stunning view over the strait of Rio towards the island of La Graciosa

This picture is taken in the entrance corridor looking back towards the entrance.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken handheld at ISO 1600 for short enough shutter speeds. Tripods are allowed here but I wanted more flexibility. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

This was taken on the Playa Grande beach Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote at low tide. This week in Lanzarote there has been a lot of scattered thin clouds making for some good sunrises and sunsets. With the beach just 10 minutes walk away, a late sunrise of 07.50 and warm temperatures it gives a good incentive to get out and take photos.

The picture was taken on a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10 mm. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

Photomatix

Photoshop

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance with layer masks to exclude the Sun.

Vibrance layer increase 47 points

Hue Saturation layer saturation increased in reds and yellows to improve the sunrise colours.

A note that as per my usual workflow before applying Topaz and sharpening I flattened all layers. Then a duplicate layer to apply Noiseware and initial sharpening and another duplicate layer on top for Topaz when used or extra Unsharp mask so a layer mask can be used to exclude areas if necessary. Some filters and tools do not work with a lot of adjustment layers.

First duplicate layer Noiseware Pro and a little sharpening

Second duplicate layer for topaz adjust, HDR presets, dynamic pop 2 with some adjustments and addition of a light vignette.

Slight straightening of the horizon was needed. As there was nothing round the edges to worry about when cropping I used the semi auto method in Photoshop. Ruler tool used to draw a line along the horizon and then clicked straighten in the top options.

Timanfaya National Park is the result of a bloody episode with two clear historical eruptive processes. The longer and more intense was launched in 1730 and was active until 1736. The most recent took place in 1824. The eruptions, for the eighteenth century, affecting a total of 195.20 km2, rising volcanic cones related to tectonic fractures have an orientation ENE - WSW. In 1824 took place in Lanzarote last eruptive episode. Made their debut three new volcanic cones: Tao, Tinguatón or New Volcano and the Volcano New Fire or The china cabinet, the latter is the only representative of this period within the park boundaries.

Still remembers the past with the demonstration of high surface temperatures, geothermal anomalies, they arise from the existence of a deposit or residual magma chamber, located relatively near the surface, between 4 to 5 km deep, making it possible register temperatures up to 610 º C to only 13 m deep and between 100 and 200 ° C at ground level.

The spectacular landscape of Lanzarote, like the rest of the Canary Islands, is due to its volcanic origin. Their historical (marked by intense volcanic activity for millions of years) has made it today. It is thus the result of natural disasters that are likely to recur.

El Golfo is a natural amphitheatre open to the sea which was formed from the volcanic eruptions of 1730. The lagoon, which fills the base of this semicircular crater, is a result of flooding, and its green colour is from the algae that inhabit its waters.
The volcano made of porous lava ash has through the action of time given rise to spectacular formations.
The sea connected underground, passes through the crater forming a beautiful black beach, which contrasts with the green lagoon. This lake has been declared a Natural Reserve which prohibits bathing.
It is located in the south of the island in the Municipality of Yaiza.
The village of El Golfo can be found a few metres away, where you can enjoy various restaurants facing the sea (lanzarote.com).

Graciosa Island
Graciosa Island or commonly La Graciosa (Spanish for graceful) is a volcanic island in the Canary Islands of Spain, located 2 km north of the island of Lanzarote with the strait named Río. It was formed by the Canary hotspot. The island is part of Parque Natural del Archipiélago Chinijo, Reserve of the Biosphere, "Marine Reserve of La Graciosa and the islands to the North of Lanzarote" it is linked to the municipality of Teguise. The island forms a part of the Chinijo Archipelago. The village is in the southeastern part of the island with houses encircling the harbor which has two piers and a yacht area in the bay. The only two settlements are Caleta del Sebo and summer-residence Casas de Pedro Barba. The island is entirely made up of volcanic rock and sands.

The population is 700. Tourism is the main industry along with fishing. Every year, tourists flock to the island for its tempered climate and its sandy volcanic coasts. The island has a school, lyceum, post office, supermarkets, a bank, port, beaches, and — except bar-restaurants — a square where bicycles can be hired (plaza).

Streets and roads on La Graciosa are unpaved sand. The Gracioseras can often be seen early each morning sweeping the streets smooth of the previous night's footprints. Motor vehicles are strictly prohibited and limited to a handful of licensed vehicles for special purposes. Since the roads are bad, and cars have to be shipped to Lanzarote for repair, about 70% of the motor vehicles on the island are old Land Rovers which often can be repaired by a local serviceman (source: Wikipedia).

Teguise is a Canarian municipality in the north-central and the eastern portion of the island of Lanzarote in the Las Palmas province in the Canary Islands.
The main industries are agriculture and tourism. The Atlantic Ocean is to the northwest and east and the mountains are around the municipality.
The town was founded in 1414. Teguise served as the capital of the island until the capital moved to Arrecife in 1852 (Source: Wikipedia).

The car renting was really cheap there, and the lonely roads are great to have this freedom feeling.

Lanzarote hollidays are in someway like a very little road movie.

Timanfaya National Park or Parque Nacional de Timanfaya is in the southwestern part of the island of Lanzarote (Canary Islands) of Spain. The parkland is entirely made up of volcanic soil. Volcanic activity continues as the surface temperature in the core ranges from 100 to 600 ºC at the depth of 13m, which is demonstrated by pouring water into the ground, resulting in a geyser of steam which is an attraction for tourists. In 1993, UNESCO granted the qualification for the Biospherical Reserve.
