This photo was taken after an interview with John Humphrys on BBC Radio 4. The physicist Steve Mesure and I were discussing Street Vibe, a project we created to engage the public in creative demonstrations of science principles. In addition to that morning's newspapers, Humphrys is holding a carrot flute specially made for the interview by Steve Mesure. I had earlier played a water drum and a horseradish clarinet. Helena Kennedy QC was there to talk about some pertinent human rights issue of the day.

Flickr THE PEDDARS WAY STARTS HERE
Tags: sign
I hitch-hiked a lift from Thetford and my benefactor was Mr. John Humphries, not the Radio 4 Today programme host but like that one this Mr H is also involved in the media business as the owner and publisher of Scottish Islands Explorer, the only UK magazine dedicated to exploring the Islands of Scotland. Mr. Humphries detoured from his route to drop me off right at the beginning of the Peddars Way and he saved me from a long road walk-in. Thank you Sir, and may you and your magazine prosper.
From here to the coast at Holme-next-the-Sea the route follows the line of the Roman Road (the Peddars Way) before turning east at exactly the half-way point on the walk to follow the Norfolk Coast Path to Cromer, the complete distance totalling 93 miles. Being a linear walk increases the logistical problems, but I've bought a return rail-ticket from Darlington to Thetford - £95.00 less my Senior Rail card discount (Rail Cards! a rather tawdry recompense for the loss of youth don't you think?) and will just have to take whatever options are available for getting back to Thetford from Cromer, but plenty of time to worry about that later, in the meantime, its on with the show...

Remember writing this a few years ago: "And the whole time I was on the dole I never once wasted a moment. And it's really paid off" ?

How easy do you think it is for young artists trying to make their way today? Is love all they want?

Professor James Lovelock, the scientist who developed Gaia theory, has said it is too late to try and save the planet. The man who achieved global fame for his theory that the whole earth is a single organism now believes that we can only hope that the earth will take care of itself in the face of completely unpredictable climate change.
Interviewed by Today presenter John Humphrys, he said that while the earth's future was utterly uncertain, mankind was not aware it had "pulled the trigger" on global warming as it built its civilizations.
'We're not really guilty. We didn't deliberately set out to heat the world'
What is more, he predicts, the earth's climate will not conveniently comply with the models of modern climate scientists.
As the record winter cold testifies, he says, global temperatures move in "jerks and jumps", and we cannot confidently predict what the future holds.
'The world doesn't change its climate conveniently'
Prof Lovelock does not pull his punches on the politicians and scientists who are set to gain from the idea that we can predict climate change and save the planet ourselves.
Scientists, he says, have moved from investigating nature as a vocation, to being caught in a career path where it makes sense to "fudge the data".
'Science has changed in our lifetime'
And while renewable energy technology may make good business sense, he says, it is not based on "good practical engineering".
Renewable technology 'doesn't really work'
At the age of 90, Prof Lovelock is resigned to his own fate and the fate of the planet. Whether the planet saves itself or not, he argues, all we can do is to "enjoy life while you can".
Trying to save the planet 'is a lot of nonsense'

Why the BBC should scrap Thought For The Day (and I'm a believer)

By A N Wilson

Last updated at 7:47 AM on 15th July 2009

After years in the wilderness, atheists are to have their soap box alongside Britain's religious bigwigs on Radio 4's Thought For The Day.

Yes, the politically-correct mandarins at the Beeb are planning to offer the anti-God lobby the opportunity to preach on the long-running God slot, which airs during the Today programme.

There have been some predictable responses from both sides of the religious divide.

'It strikes me that the secularists predominate in the other two hours and 55 minutes of the Today programme, so is it asking too much for religion to have a chunk of dedicated time?' wails Steve Clifford, of the Evangelical Alliance.

'I hope this does happen because religious people do not have the monopoly on morality and ethics,' ripostes arch-atheist Richard Dawkins.

But while the two sides squabble, there is a more radical alternative.

Instead of adding a bland atheist to the catalogue of bland Muslims, bland Hindus, bland Sikhs and bland Jews whom the BBC enlists to provide balance to the Christians, they could do the obvious thing, and just abolish Thought For The Day.

In its current form, this slot of politically-correct twitter is no more than an inconvenience.

The Today programme is a mixed bag, which is why, for at least half the week, I tune into one of the music programmes instead.

Nevertheless, you can do worse in the morning than to shave, have a soak in the tub, or stir the porridge while Jim Naughtie and John Humphrys burble away in the background.

But if we do tune in to Today, it is not because we are desperate for a half-holy thought from some carefully-selected representative of one of the great world religions.

It is because we have developed an affection for the programme's curious blend of politics and current affairs.

Unfortunately, the BBC doesn't seem to understand this. For just as Humphrys is getting into his flow demonstrating his superior grasp of economics to some Treasury minister, we hear: 'And it's quarter to eight, time for Thought For The Day. In our Cambridge studio is the Reverend Angela Tilby.'

Now let me be clear, I am a religious man.

But I don't have Thought For The Day to thank for this.

One of the key things which kept me from returning to the faith during an extended period of agnosticism, was this daily sermon.

This is partly because the BBC - whose head of religious broadcasting, Aaqil Ahmed, is a Muslim - so rarely chooses anyone whose 'thought' is challenging - or even particularly religious.

The Bishop of Southwark, for example, is classic Thought For The Day material.

The Rt Rev Tom Butler is the fellow who, a few years ago, after a Christmas Party at the Irish Embassy, clambered into the back of a total stranger's car and announced: 'I'm the Bishop of Southwark I am - it's what I do.'

Unfortunately, he is never that entertaining on the radio.

Even poor old Rabbi Lionel Blue, who used to tell quite funny jokes, is, quite frankly, now past it and should have hung up his radio mike long ago.

And so my usual custom when Thought For The Day is about to begin is to do something which will drown out the sound.

But if I do actually listen, I find myself asking what kind of self-obsessed character would ever accept the chance to offer us one of their thoughts.

Politicians, who clamour for the chance to spout 'wisdom' on the Today programme, are conceited enough. Do we need our religious leaders to be the same?

Most of the Thought For The Day preachers betray this self-conceit in their voices.

One of them, Colin Morris, a Methodist minister from Hove, has an infuriating way of...pausing...before any word which the rest of us might find...'difficult'.

And why do they never, ever say anything interesting? After all, if the BBC had a truly religious God slot, I'd be the first to tune in.

They could have the Rev Ian Paisley telling us why he thought Roman Catholics were in cahoots with the devil; mullahs from the Finsbury Park mosque explaining why Britain and the U.S were the Great Satan; extreme Orthodox Jews battling it out with Right-wing Hindus.

But such views, of course, are never allowed anywhere near the microphone at the Beeb.

Indeed, because of the supposedly sensitive nature of the material, Thought For The Day is one of the most heavily-edited two or three minutes in the radio day.

I suspect that the huge majority of Radio 4 listeners, both religious and non-religious, would be as happy if the sermon was dropped.

In truly religious countries, the daily radio broadcast starts with a prayer.

In Ireland, they used to begin with the Angelus; Muslim countries broadcast the call to prayer.

Even the BBC used to have something called Lift Up Your Hearts, in which a prayer and a hymn were played, at the start of the broadcasting day.

To none of these would we raise any objections.

But Thought For The Day is a maddening, and typically British, compromise.

It dangles like an awkward, rotten tooth, clinging to the gums.

But rather than yank it out and bring the misery to an end, the editors of the Today programme and the Trustees of the BBC merely add to the seemingly endless queue of wishy-washy, politically-correct speakers.

Richard Dawkins is entitled to his point of view that religious people do not have the monopoly on ethics. As a religious person, I should agree with him.

But I would agree more with anyone who said that they did not want a preacher, religious or otherwise, telling them what to think before eight o'clock in the morning.

A well-known Victorian clergyman, Hawker of Morwenstow, was once visited by a stranger in his remote Cornish parish.

And because Hawker was also a famous poet at the time, the stranger kept badgering him with questions about his views on life.

Eventually, Hawker took the stranger to a window and showed him the cliffs and the sea.

'Those are my views,' said Hawker. 'My opinions I keep to myself.'

If only the BBC followed his advice.

I owe this man, John Humphries, a lot. He has organised the music week for many years, and I feel honoured to have been part of it for so long. John is seen here tucking in to the Schubert Octet, played on the last day, with a concentrated expression. Well played, everyone, including John.

It occurred to me that I hadn't taken a picture of my Today Programme egg cups in action. (They were a very kind Christmas present from David and Jane.) As the reviews suggested, they're apparently designed for tiny eggs, but John is level-headed enough to balance these XL eggs well enough.
