A statue honouring Penn State football head coach Joe Paterno has been torn down as the university bows to massive public outcry.

Penn State ordered the removal of the statue of Hall of Fame coach early on Sunday morning.
Workers lifted the statue off its base and used a forklift to move it into Beaver Stadium early Saturday as the 100 to 150 students watching chanted, 'We are Penn State.'

The university announced that it was going to take down the monument in the wake of an investigative report that found the late coach and three other top Penn State administrators concealed sex abuse claims against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The statue turned into a target for Paterno’s critics after former FBI Director Louis Freeh alleged a cover-up by Paterno and others that allowed Sandusky to continue molesting boys.

Police and construction workers barricaded both sides of the street and the sidewalks near the statue.

A chain-link fence was also erected around the area and a tarp was raised that concealed most of the statue.

In a statement released later on Sunday morning, the Paterno family said: 'Tearing down the statue of Joe Paterno does not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky's horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State Community. We believe the only way to help the victims is to uncover the full truth.'

The family also chided the media for what they called one-sided reporting on a document that Paterno is unable to defend himself against.

The Freeh report, though it has been accepted by the media as the definitive conclusion on the Sandusky scandal, is the equivalent of an indictment - a charging document written by a prosecutor - and an incomplete and unofficial one at that.

'To those who truly want to know the truth about Sandusky, it should matter that Joe Paterno has never had a hearing; that his legal counsel has never been able to interview key witnesses, all of whom are represented by lawyers and therefore unavailable; that there has never been an opportunity to review critical evidence which has not been made public; that selective evidence and the opinion of Mr Freeh is treated as the equivalent of a fair trial.'

The statement went on: 'Despite this obviously flawed and one-sided presentation, the University believes it must acquiesce and accept that Joe Paterno has been given a fair and complete hearing. We think the better course would have been for the University to take a strong stand in support of due process so that the complete truth can be uncovered.'

Construction vehicles and police arrived shortly after dawn Sunday, barricading the street and sidewalks near the statue, erecting a chain-link fence then concealing the statue with a blue tarp.

Penn State President Rod Erickson said he decided to have the statue removed and put into storage because it 'has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing.'

'I believe that, were it to remain, the statue will be a recurring wound to the multitude of individuals across the nation and beyond who have been the victims of child abuse,' Erickson said in a statement released at 7am on Sunday.

Last week, a plane was spotted over State College towing a banner that read 'TAKE THE STATUE DOWN OR WE WILL.'

But that may soon be a moot point, as the NCAA has said it isn't ruling out the possibility of shutting down the entire Penn State football programme in light of the Sandusky case.
The NCAA will announce a punishment against Penn State and its football programme tomorrow morning.
A source told CBS News that the penalties against the university will be 'unprecedented.'

Getting rid of all traces: Since a scathing report which detailed how much former football coach Joe Paterno (pictured) knew about the child sex scandal, his name is being pulled from much of the school

AP

..............................................
.

The bronze sculpture outside Beaver Stadium has been a rallying point for students and alumni outraged over Paterno's firing four days after Sandusky's November 5 arrest - and grief-stricken over the Hall of Fame coach's Jan. 22 death at age 85.

But it turned into a target for critics after the Freeh report's stunning allegation of a cover-up by Paterno, ousted President Graham Spanier and two Penn State officials, Athletic Director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz.

Their failure to report Sandusky to child-welfare authorities in 2001 allowed him to continue molesting boys, the report found.

The statue has been sitting in front of the stadium since 2001.

*************************This below was taken from CBS News…

In a massive shakeup, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and school president Graham Spanier were fired Wednesday night by the board of trustees amid the growing furor over how the school handled child sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The longtime coach, the winningest in major college football, was ousted at the end of day that began with his announcement to retire at end of the season, his 46th.

It was not to be.

“The university is much larger than its athletic teams,” board vice chair John Surma said during a packed press conference.

After hearing news of the firing, Paterno released a statement, saying: “I am disappointed with the Board of Trustees’ decision, but I have to accept it. A tragedy occurred, and we all have to have patience to let the legal process proceed. I appreciate the outpouring of support but want to emphasize that everyone should remain calm and please respect the university, its property and all that we value.”

Standing outside of his home late Thursday with his wife, Paterno responded to crowds of students chanting “please don’t go” by saying: “You guys are great, all of you. Hey look, get a good night’s sleep, study. You still have things to do.”

A source close to former Penn State Football Coach Joe Paterno tells CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian that the Paterno family is shocked and outraged over the university’s handling of the firing.

The source claims a university employee hand-delivered a letter about the firing to the family home a mere 15 minutes prior to the press conference. According to the source, the reason for the letter was that the university employee said the board was unable to locate Paterno during the day.

“You give your life to this place and that’s how you’re treated,” the source said.

But according to Surma, Paterno and Spanier were informed by telephone of the unanimous decisions to remove them because “we were unable to find a way to do that in person without causing further distraction.”

Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley will serve as interim coach while Rodney Erickson will be the interim school president.

“The Penn State board of trustees tonight decided it is in the best interest of the university to have a change in leadership to deal with the difficult issues that we are facing,” Surma said.

“The past several days have been absolutely terrible for the entire Penn State community. But the outrage that we feel is nothing compared to the physical and psychological suffering that allegedly took place.”

Speaking outside his home after the press conference, Paterno said: “Right now, I’m not the football coach. And I’ve got to get used to that. After 61 years, I’ve got to get used to it. I appreciate it. Let me think it through.”

Penn St. scandal dwarfs others in college sports

Paterno said in a statement earlier Wednesday that he was “absolutely devastated” by the abuse case, in which his former assistant and onetime heir apparent, Jerry Sandusky, has been charged with molesting eight boys over 15 years, with some of the alleged assaults taking place at the Penn State football complex.

“This is a tragedy,” Paterno said. “It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.”

Paterno has come under harsh criticism — including from within the community known as Happy Valley — for not taking more action in 2002 after then-graduate assistant and current assistant coach Mike McQueary came to him and reported seeing Sandusky in the Penn State showers with a young boy. Paterno notified the athletic director, Tim Curley, and a vice president, Gary Schultz.

Paterno is not a target of the criminal investigation, although Curley and Schultz have been charged with failing to report the incident to the authorities.

After the firings, thousands of students descended on the administration building, shouting, “We want Joe back!” then headed to downtown to Beaver Avenue. The mood there was boisterous but not angry — almost all the students were decked out in Penn State gear.

The firings came three days before Penn State hosts Nebraska in its final home game of the season, a day usually set aside to honor seniors on the team.

The ouster of the man affectionately known as “JoePa” brings to an end one of the most storied coaching careers — not just in college football but in all of sports. Paterno has 409 victories — a record for major college football — won two national titles and guided five teams to unbeaten, untied seasons. He reached 300 wins faster than any other coach.

Penn State is 8-1 this year, with its only loss to powerhouse Alabama. The Nittany Lions are No. 12 in The Associated Press poll.

After 19th-ranked Nebraska, Penn State plays at Ohio State and at No. 16 Wisconsin, both Big Ten rivals. It has a chance to play in the Big Ten championship game Dec. 3 in Indianapolis, with a Rose Bowl bid on the line.

After meeting Tuesday, the board said it would appoint a committee to investigate the “circumstances” that resulted in the indictment of Sandusky, and of Curley and Schultz.

Sandusky, who retired from Penn State in June 1999, maintained his innocence through his lawyer. Curley has taken a leave of absence and Schultz has decided to step down. They also say they are innocent.

The committee will be appointed Friday at the board’s regular meeting, which Gov. Tom Corbett said he plans to attend, and will examine “what failures occurred and who is responsible and what measures are necessary to ensure” similar mistakes aren’t made in the future.

Sandusky founded The Second Mile charity in 1977, working with at-risk youths. It now raises and spends several million dollars each year for its programs. Paterno is listed on The Second Mile’s website as a member of its honorary board of directors, a group that includes business executives, golfing great Arnold Palmer and several NFL Hall of Famers and coaches, including retired Pittsburgh Steelers stars Jack Ham and Franco Harris.

In 2002, according to the Pennsylvania Attorney General, a graduate assistant saw Sandusky sexually assault a naked boy, estimated to be about 10 years old, in a team locker room shower. The grad student and his father reported what he saw to Paterno, who immediately told Curley. Two people familiar with the investigation confirmed the identity of the graduate assistant as Mike McQueary, now the team’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. The two spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Beaver Stadium

Beaver Stadium is an outdoor football stadium located on the campus of The Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania. It is home to the Penn State Nittany Lions of the Big Ten Conference. The stadium is named for James A. Beaver, a former governor of Pennsylvania (1887–91) and president of the university's board of trustees.

Beaver Stadium has a capacity of 107,282, making it the largest stadium in the United States (It was announced on March 11, 2008 that Michigan Stadium, previously the largest, will have its capacity temporarily reduced by 1,300 as a result of an accessibility-related lawsuit).

It is also the largest stadium in North America, and the third largest stadium in the world. The natural grass playing field sits at an elevation of 1,170 feet (356 m) above sea level.

Due to its large size, Beaver Stadium is widely known as one of the toughest venues for opposing teams in collegiate athletics. Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN says that Penn State has the best student section in the nation and Gameday at PSU is "The Greatest Show in College Sports". A 2007 ESPN article ranked Beaver Stadium 5th in its top 10 list of "Scariest Places to Play".

Note the word “guests,” which may be one of the most chilling euphemisms I’ve ever heard.

University officials didn’t even follow through on the inadequate response of cutting off Sandusky’s access to Penn State facilities.

According to Freeh’s report, Sandusky “was allowed to have a key for, and continued to work out in” the athletic complex until November of last year. “If university leaders had not granted Sandusky full use of Penn State’s football facilities and supported his ways to ‘work with young people through Penn State,’ sexual assaults of several young boys on the Penn State campus might have been prevented.”

US must start acting like a serious country

China, for better or worse, is a serious country. The United States had better start acting like one.

I got a glimpse of the future Wednesday in the vast ballroom of a Washington hotel where hundreds of august dignitaries —and some journalists as well —gathered at a luncheon in honor of Vice President Xi Jinping, who is widely expected to become China’s top leader after a year-long transition.

Xi’s status is such that he was introduced by no less than Henry Kissinger, who spoke, not for the first time, of the Nixon-to-China breakthrough four decades ago. It is useful to remember that the country we now think of as a trillion-dollar creditor and the manufacturer of iPads was once a Maoist bastion, hermetically sealed against the capitalist influences of the Western world.

Let me interject that this column will include quite a few Chinese names, which can be hard for English-speaking readers to follow. Please make the effort. Being an informed citizen of the world is increasingly going to require some level of comfort with Chinese nomenclature.

Xi’s father —Xi Zhongxun, once one of Mao Zedong’s lieutenants —fell out of favor and was persecuted during much of that era. Xi Jinping is part of a remarkable generation that survived the apocalypse of the Cultural Revolution; he spent long, hard years as a teenager living in a cave in the poor, remote Shaanxi province.

Xi fared better than the man considered his chief rival for power and influence in China -- Bo Xilai, the Communist Party chief for the Chongqing metropolitan area, which is home to nearly 30 million people. Bo’s father, Bo Yibo, was one of Mao’s most trusted associates before being purged in the Cultural Revolution. The whole family was sent to a prison for five years, then to a labor camp for another five. Bo Xilai’s mother either committed suicide or was beaten to death.

I recount this history because it helps me understand why the men — and a few women — now running China are the way they are: impatient to make up for lost time, pathologically wary of the slightest instability, tough, resourceful, adaptable, coldly unsentimental and, as Kissinger generalized in his introduction, convinced “that every solution is the beginning of a new set of problems.”

Page 1

.......................

The speech Xi delivered at the luncheon was fairly stilted and anodyne, as one might have expected. He’s not president yet, and clearly he was intent on not making headline news. China wants a “cooperative partnership” with the United States, he said, adding his meetings with President Obama and Vice President Biden were “fruitful.”

There was an overall message, however. Xi referred to the U.S.-China relationship as “an unstoppable river that keeps surging ahead.” He was pointing out the obvious: For decades to come, the United States and China will be the world’s two biggest economic powers. We’re stuck with each other, like it or not.

China is a one-party state, but that does not mean there is no debate about the country’s direction. Xi is considered likely to keep the nation on its current path of free-market economic growth. His political adversary Bo Xilai advocates a more robust safety net to care for the millions who are being left out of the Chinese economic miracle.

There are also internal disagreements about how aggressive China should be in asserting its military influence throughout the region, especially in the South China Sea. Addressing the environmental cost of the country’s rapid development will be an urgent task for the incoming leadership. China’s record on human rights and political openness is still abysmal.

These are serious questions — but Chinese leaders at least are grappling with them in a serious manner. But here in the United States?

“We’re having the most frivolous of conversations — in an election year!” This assessment came from Jon Huntsman, the former ambassador to China who recently ended his bid for the GOP presidential nomination, and who attended the lunch for Xi.

We hear a lot of China-bashing on the campaign trail. Yes, there’s plenty to criticize — currency manipulation, intellectual piracy, the appalling veto of a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for the ouster of the murderous Assad regime in Syria. What we’re not hearing is a serious debate about farsighted reforms that are needed to keep the United States from falling behind.

If we are to thrive in a changing world, singing “America the Beautiful” isn’t enough.

Eugene Robinson: Joe Paterno's shame
Report reveals coach's disregard for victims

Outside the Penn State football stadium stands a statue of legendary coach Joe Paterno, his arm raised in victory. Right next to it, university officials should erect another figure in bronze: A young boy crying out in anguish and being coldly ignored.

Penn State’s Board of Trustees commissioned former FBI Director Louis Freeh to investigate how child molester Jerry Sandusky — for years one of Paterno’s most trusted and loyal assistants — could have committed his awful crimes under the noses of university officials. The answer is simple and shocking: Those officials simply looked the other way.

“The most saddening finding by the Special Investigative Counsel is the total and consistent disregard by the most senior leaders at Penn State for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims,” the report states. “Four of the most powerful people at The Pennsylvania State University … failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade.”

Those four powerful officials include Paterno, who died earlier this year of lung cancer. Almost literally a sainted figure in the world of big-time, big-money college sports, Paterno became aware of seriously inappropriate behavior by Sandusky with young boys at least 14 years ago, according to Freeh’s report. Paterno’s inaction was shameful.

Most damning is Freeh’s finding that in 2001, after an assistant coach saw Sandusky raping a young boy in the showers of a Penn State locker room, an intervention by Paterno was apparently instrumental in convincing university officials to sweep the incident under the rug.

The other three men allegedly involved in the cover-up — former Athletic Director Tim Curley and former Vice President Gary Schultz, both of whom face perjury charges, and former university President Graham Spanier — had decided to notify state child-welfare officials, according to Freeh, who had access to private emails and notes.

But before any action was taken, Curley wrote to Schultz and Spanier that “after giving it more thought and talking it over with Joe,” he had decided he would be more “comfortable” meeting with Sandusky, counseling him to get professional help and telling him “his guests are not permitted to use our facilities.”

It goes without saying that Paterno’s legacy is forever tarnished. He was head coach at Penn State for 46 years until being fired last year after Sandusky was arrested and the charges against him made public. Paterno’s 409 wins are the most of any Division I coach. His Nittany Lions won two national championships and made 37 bowl appearances. He was especially proud of his football program’s record as a model: Penn State avoided the recruiting scandals that involved so many other schools with top-ranked athletic programs, and his football players graduated at an admirable rate.

In a letter he wrote before his death, apparently intended as an op-ed piece, Paterno argued that whatever people might think of his actions in the Sandusky matter, “this is not a football scandal.”

But that’s precisely what it is.

Imagine that an assistant coach of, say, the chess team were caught showering with an 11-year-old boy, as Sandusky was in 1998. Would that chess coach still be around three years later? If he were caught in the act of abusing another young boy in 2001, would the top officials of the university dither and fret for days — without making the slightest attempt to identify and locate the victim? Would the head chess coach be able to convince his superiors there was no need to call state welfare officials, let alone the police?

The truth is that Joe Paterno was more powerful at Penn State than any athletic director, more powerful even than the university’s president. And the reputation of the football program was more important than the safety and well-being of innocent young boys.

Joe Paterno, 1926-2012

Joe Paterno died on January 22, 2012 from complications of Lung Cancer. He was 85.
"JoePa" had 409 wins in 46 seasons and two national championships.
He racked up more wins than anyone else in major college football.
Paterno guided five teams to unbeaten, untied seasons.
With his thick glasses, rolled up khakis and white socks, Paterno was synonymous with Penn State and was seen in many ways as the archetypal football coach.

Joe's son Scott announced Nov.18th, 2011 that his father was being treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed in mid-November during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness.

Joe has been in the hospital since Jan.13th, 2012 for observation for what his family had called minor complications from his cancer treatments. Not long before that, he conducted his only interview since losing his job, with The Washington Post. Paterno was described as frail then and wearing a wig. The second half of the two-day interview was conducted by his bedside.

I have the most amazing wife ever! Just before graduating from Penn State my wife asks me what I want for Graduation? So jokingly I told her I wanted my picture with JoePa. About a month goes by and I come home to a note telling me to be ready I had an appointment with Joe the next day! We went up to his office where he had a signed football for me and posed for a couple pictures.

My wife is the best, and Joe is just as much of a class act as he appears.

The Orange Bowl was truely scary but Joe and the team came threw!!
