Myosotis ( from the Greek: "mouse's ear", after the leaf) is a genus of flowering plants in the family Boraginaceae that are commonly called Forget-me-nots. Its common name was calqued from the French, "ne m'oubliez pas" and first used in English in c.1532. Similar names and variations are found in many languages.

In a German legend, God named all the plants when a tiny unnamed one cried out, "Forget-me-not, O Lord!" God replied, "That shall be your name."[2] In another legend, the little flower cried out, "Forget-me-not!" as Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden.

The Christ Child was sitting on Mary's lap one day and said that he wished that future generations could see her eyes. He touched her eyes and then waved his hand over the ground and blue forget-me-nots appeared, hence the name forget-me-not.[citation needed]

Henry IV adopted the flower as his symbol during his exile in 1398, and retained the symbol upon his return to England the following year.

In the 15th century Germany, it was supposed that the wearers of the flower would not be forgotten by their lovers. Legend has it that in medieval times, a knight and his lady were walking along the side of a river. He picked a posy of flowers, but because of the weight of his armour he fell into the river. As he was drowning he threw the posy to his loved one and shouted "Forget-me-not". This is a flower connected with romance and tragic fate. It was often worn by ladies as a sign of faithfulness and enduring love. Most people use these in weddings for love.

Flickr French chain guard, TA crankset, VO hardware

Had this French "Aludur" alloy chain guard sitting in a parts bin for awhile, and decided to see how it works on my Jeunet with 1x5 drivetrain. I am getting tired of chain grime-stained pant cuffs (even when wearing an ankle band). I was concerned that the tightly spaced TA crankset would leave little room for error (my concern proved valid!). VO was nice enough to send me a set of draw bolts and clamps to attach it. I'm of mixed opinion on the appearance: I like the chain guard itself, but I think the attachment hardware is clunky and disrupts the flowing lines. The French bikes that used this type of guard usually had the posts brazed directly to the down tube and seat tube, avoiding the clamps. I'm also not 100% confident the clamps will hold the guard in perfect alignment over time. I will have to wait and see.

Opinions? Keep it? Or nix it?

Flickr "Fraisier" a Yummy French Strawberry Cake 01
Tags: strawberry   strawberryshortcake   genoise   buttercream   fraisier   spongecake   mousseline
We made a French "Fraisier" cake at school today. Yes, I said it was a french cake so you are probly thinking "it must have a boat load of butter in it" and you would be correct. Enough to choke a horse with. That yummy goodness around the strawberries is called "mousseline" (vanilla flavored). Its basically pastry cream (custard) that you add butter to when its warm then after its cooled down you whip it in the mixer and add more butter to it.

You make this in a cake ring / mold. You start out with a thin layer of Genoise (sponge cake) then add the strawberry halfs around the edge then pipe a thin layer of mousseline, then a layer of choped up strawberries, then another layer of Genoise, then another layer of mousseline. This goes back into the fridge to set up. When thats hard you bring it out and add the very top layer. We did one with a Marzipan top and the other (this one) we did a buttercream top ( yep more butter), I pan roasted some almond slivers, added them around the edge, then dusted them with powdered sugar and sprinkled some metalic pearls with a fanned strawberry. I used the back of a plastic fork to get the wavey lines in the butter cream.

Historically speaking the words "French" "Military" and "Victory" don't often go together. So I suppose it's not altogether surprising that when they finally achieved a great one (at the hands of a Corsican, but they still count right?) that it was decided to built one giant honkin' monument to denote it.
And indeed, the Arc de Triomphe does not disappoint. It's massive in a way that pictures don't fully do justice. Inspired by the Roman Triumphal Arch's of Antiquity (the Arc of Titus being the template for this one) it was commissioned in 1806, although not finished until 30 years later. Since then it has served as a wonderful photo op for invading armies.

Some Belgians believe that the term "French" was introduced when American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I, and consequently tasted Belgian fries. They supposedly called them "French", as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time. At this time French fries were growing popular.

Flickr Railroads to the Reich: French "Forty and Eight" Railroad Car

French "Forty and Eight" Railroad Car

By the end of the 19th century, railroads made it possible to transport people and goods quickly over long distances, and this transportation revolution soon affected military operations. Armies became reliant upon railroads for supplies, and during World War I, men and supplies flowed to the trenches in railroad cars. A familiar sight to American "Doughboys" was the French "forty and eight" railroad cars, which carried them to the front. These cars received their names because they could carry 40 men or eight horses, as was clearly painted on each boxcar.

During World War II, the little-changed "forty and eight" boxcars still transported supplies and troops to the front, but they also returned to Germany with new cargoes. Many Allied prisoners of war rode to German POW camps in these boxcars -- sometimes with as many as 90 men forced into each boxcar. Millions of Holocaust victims were herded into similar boxcars on their way to concentration camps. Boxcars such as the one on display carried 168 Allied POWs from Paris to the Buchenwald concentration camp in August 1944. Many POWs endured harsh conditions during their trips to POW camps, which sometimes included attacks from Allied aircraft.

Constructed in France in 1943, this "forty and eight" railroad car operated in occupied France during WWII, and it most likely transported human cargoes from France to Germany. Withdrawn from service in the 1980s, the French Railroad Company (SNCF) used this railcar to store equipment at a railroad maintenance facility in Dijon, France. SNCF personnel painstakingly restored it to a near-original condition in honor of those American POWs transferred by "forty and eights." Assisted by the French military, the U.S. Air Force airlifted the 13-ton railcar from Istres Air Base, France, to the museum in late July 2001.

Flickr Ils Nont Pas Passe "They shall not pass"
Tags: verdunstmihiel2010
"They shall not pass" (French: "Ils ne passeront pas/On ne passe pas"; Spanish: "¡No pasarán!"; German: "Sie werden nicht durchkommen!"; Romanian: "Pe aici nu se trece!"); Catalan: "No passaran!" is a propaganda slogan used to express determination to defend a position against an enemy.

It was most famously used during the Battle of Verdun in World War I by French General Robert Nivelle (although some have attributed it to his commander, Philippe Pétain). It appears on propaganda posters, such as that by Maurice Neumont after the Second Battle of the Marne, which was later adopted on uniform badges by units manning the Maginot Line. Later during the war, it also was used by Romanian soldiers during the Battle of Mărăşeşti.

It was also used during the Spanish Civil War, this time at the Siege of Madrid by Dolores Ibárruri Gómez, a member of the Communist Party of Spain, in her famous "No Pasarán" speech on 18 July 1936. The leader of the nationalist forces, Francisco Franco upon gaining Madrid, responded to this slogan with "Hemos pasado" ("We have passed").

There we were, 10 PM turkey-day-eve, K and I bemoaning the reality that we hadn't bought wine yet for the Thanksgiving meal, and that we would have to go out at this late hour and see what we might settle for among the offerings at the desperate "wine" shop up the block, amongst the 40's and Lottery tickets they seem to specialize in.

Just then, K looked up, on top of the fridge.

"What's that?"

"That, my dear, is a bottle of red French wine left here amongst Jenni's portions of "leave-behinds". Most likely a gift for someone here in NY."

"That sure looks like our Thanksgiving day wine."

"It suuuuure does."

We are thankful for Jenni's leftovers. The wine was perfect.

In our family, we call that "Wish a Wine" (Used most often in reference to beer, as in "Wish a Beer" -- when you open the fridge, knowing there's no beer in there, but find one anyway.)

[from the French "marche-route," for an army's path]

A couple of weekends ago, I decided to head into Moscow on the
marche-routka, a kind of private van service that connects many of
Moscow's outskirts, with one another and with the metro. The vans
seat about 10 people in close quarters and vary considerably in
internal decor, driver skill and other ways. Route 380 runs between
the gates of Star City and the Shelkovskoe metro station, with some
other stops along the way. It costs 50 rubles (about $2); you hand
the cash directly to the driver, or another passenger will pass it
along for you. The trip takes from half an hour to two hours
depending on traffic, and you usually get to hear some pretty
interesting conversations - mostly one-sided ones, on cell phones.

This particular morning, a Saturday around 8 am, I had just
discovered the cafeteria was closed on weekends, so I was heading
into Moscow for breakfast and a swim. The parked marche-routka was
empty, so I looked around for a driver and spotted someone. "Are you
the driver?" I asked politely.

The guy shrugged and said (loose translation): "Lady, look at
me! I'm standing here, drinking a beer. Do I look like the
driver?" Well, no, I hadn't actually noticed the beer, and in
Russia that doesn't seem to be much of a disqualification anyway.

But perhaps it is. On my very first trip to Russia, back in 1989, I
took a private taxi and struck up a conversation with the
driver. professional taxis at the time were quite rare; mostly,
people just hitch-hiked and negotiated fares one on one. But this
guy drove professionally and shared his car with a colleague: "One
day he drinks and I drive," the driver told me. "And the next day
it's other way around."

Paris, the 5th of April.
A protest took place in Paris (as well as in other cities of France) and gathered thousands of demonstrators against French governement's immigration law.

Several associations were altogether in this protest to denounce the latest laws that have limited and made more difficult for foreign people to become French in the last 5 years, as well as other laws easing expulsion of the country the clandestines.

-------------
here a man yelling and holding a paper saying quoting President Sarkozy himself during one of his speach "Each Time someone is humiliated, is harrassed, hassled, he's automatically becoming French".
That being said, I let you guess why people are immigrating in France...

Fransatoftir - literally the "French ruins". The "French" were any pirates, privateers or navies: Dutch, Arab, English, French... In the Faroes, safe houses were built in the mountains to hide in during pirate attacks. Quite recently, Tórshavn was sacked less than 200 years ago.

The boulders to the right block the view from the sea.

I would not have been a popular man if I fired my flash up here in those days.

A good spring nearby supplies water. But I guess they only had cold food - smoke would be too dangerous.

L-channel adjusted with a mask from the same shot without flash. The built-in flash was not nearly strong enough, and that was probably a good thing.

Sanssouci (French "without cares") is the former summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia at Potsdam, just outside Berlin. It is often counted among the German rivals of Versailles. While Sanssouci is in the more intimate Rococo style and is far smaller than its French Baroque counterpart, it is notable for the numerous temples and follies in Sanssouci Park. (Source: Wikipedia)

(Quelle: Wikipedia)

My cousin asks me to give a name for my niece. After some research on the internet and asking friend Ning,my cousin and I both like the name "Amy".Here is the origin of this cute name:
Gender: Girl/Boy
Pronunciation: AY-mee
Origin: Old French, Latin
Meaning: "Beloved."
Notes: Anglicized form of Amee (Old French) "beloved" which originated as a nickname from the Latin Amata, from "amare", meaning "to love." Mythology: wife of King Latinus, whose daughter Lavinia married Aeneas and according to the "Aeneid", became the mother of the Roman people.
