ROD AND GUN LIVE BAIT FOR BASSAND PIKE By LOUIS RHEAD THE all-round angler usually likes to re-serve the month of May for trout. Then for change he courts larger game androugher methods. Bass and pike are alikein being savage water tyrants, and both areoften found in the same water, the formerchoosing a rocky bottom, the latter lyingnear weeds, grasses and lily pads; althoughat times they may both be found in op-posite sections of a lake or pond, so thatthe bait used is suitable for both. The best live bait may safely be placedin the order named—minnows, helgramite, crawfish, frogs, lampreys, grasshoppers andat times the big nightwalker worms. Themethods used, both in casting and trolling, vary somewhat, and in an article as con-tracted as this must be, only the mostsalient features can be given, though enoughperhaps to start the young angler on thehigh road to success in landing fish. The term minnow means any smallfish used for bait, the young of larger fish,or adult small ones. Youn

In this, the congregation were quite in advanceof other Presbyterian churches, as generally Rousesversion continued to be used until a much laterperiod. In 1790, the wall of the graveyard, which hadbecome dilapidated, was rebuilt. The yard was atthe same time enlarged on the north side by rebuild-ing the wall about twenty feet further to the north. You can see at the present day where the old wallstood on that side. Kilmainhamwood GFC had their first outing of the year in AFL3 when they took on the newly promoted Cortown at the well-appointed pitch at Kilmainhamwood. The ‘Wood were missing a number of key players and struggled against a free flowing Cortown who were 0-05 v 0-01 up at half time. The second half was being evenly contested until Cortown scored the only goal of the game. Despite a spirited comeback the ‘Wood were on the wrong end of an eight point margin. It finished Kilmainhamwood GFC 0-04 v Cortown 1-09. Read more about the match at hoganstand.com/meath/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=185744 … and this author didn’t write the report J

Shown here is an image from the Virginia Council on Human Relations, on display in the Nancy Marshall Gallery, located just outside the Special Collections Research Center on the first floor of Swem Library at the College of William & Mary. This exhibit is part of "From Fights to Rights: The Long Road to a More Perfect Union," Swem Library's project to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement. The exhibit is on display from October 17, 2011 through April 15, 2012.

The following are transcriptions of the label text presented in this case:

Jobs

The Virginia Council on Human Relations (VCHR)
advocated for and offered assistance to businesses and employers to implement what was known as "merit employment." The Virginia Equal Job Opportunity Bureau (VEJOB) was established to assist businesses prepared to adopt personnel policies based on equal opportunity without regard to race, ethnicity, or religion. VEJOB was partially funded by a grant the VCHR received and a staff member was hired to serve as the director. However, the VEJOB folded within a short time of its organization, when further funding was not secured. The VCHR specifically appealed to those businesses competing for federal contracts impacted by Executive Orders with non-discrimination provisions and also to the overall competitiveness of Virginia business and industry.

Schools

The matter of school desegregation was a major issue for the Virginia Council on Human Relations (VCHR). The VCHR monitored actions in Prince Edward County and other Virginia localities, where county officials had closed their public schools in an effort to block school desegregation. With a multi-faceted approach of fact-finding, education, publicity, negotiation, and persuasion, the VCHR sought to further the cause of school desegregation. Ultimately, Prince Edward County public schools were closed for 5 years during the period of Massive Resistance in Virginia.

The Rev. Heslip M. "Happy" Lee worked during the height of the struggle for Civil Rights in the U.S. He moved to Virginia in the late 1950s and later served as an active Executive Director of the Virginia Council on Human Relations (VCHR) until 1964. He worked to
increase both the number of local VCHR groups and its overall membership, spoke to numerous groups, and helped in the desegregation of public facilities in Virginia.

Flickr 47 Detail of Gertrude Heslip
Tags: heslip   reedchapeldubuqueiowa   gertrudeheslip
The information on Gertrude Heslip is a bit lean. In 1905 there is a Gertrude Heslup living in Dubuque, Iowa with Harriet, Clara, and Minnie Tibbals, according to the Iowa State Census. In the 1910 Census for Malheur Co., Oregon, there is a Gertrude and Ethel Heslup, daughters of Christopher and Clara Heslup. Using the parents as a reference point, the Christopher and Clara Heslup family shows up in the 1900 Federal Census in Dubuque Township, Dubuque Co., Iowa. But the girl that would be Gertrude's age is listed as Dora, a kind of error which is not uncommon. Her sister Ethel is also listed, as are siblings Mable and Thomas. It is likely that the Mrs. Heslip in photo 37 is the mother of this Gertrude. So that could be the background to this young lady, but only a hypothesis.

This Mrs. Heslip may be the mother of Gertrude Heslip (photo 47). Clara Heslup shows up in the 1900 Federal Census for Dubuque Co., with her husband Christopher, and children Dora (who may have been Gertrude), Mable, Thomas, and Ethel. In 1905 she and Christopher, with their children Mabel, Thomas, and Ethel, are listed on Rural Route 3, Dubuque, Co., Iowa. (Gertrude lives in Dubuque at this time with Harriet, Clara, and Minnie Tibbals.) . The 1910 Census for Malheur Co., Oregon lists Christopher and Clara Heslup and their daughters Gertrude and Ethel Heslup, In the 1920 Census Christopher and Clara are still in Oregon, while in the 1930 Census both Christopher and Clara Heslip are in Los Gatos, Ca,, in the same household with their daughter Ethel Heslip Hillman.

Granny Lewis, Lavina Fawcett, Blanche Brown, Mrs. Heslip, Mrs. Bill Dodson, Lillian Lewis (I think that Liliian is the young girl in the hat, not the woman between the faces of Eleanor Snodgrass and her mother who is holding her. There was a Lillian Lewis born about 1888, daughter of Joseph and Belle Metcalf Lewis), Eleanor Snodgrass held by her mother Laura Metcalf Snodgrass (partial, see panel F). (Laura was a sister to Minnie, James, and Clint in this photo, and my grandfather Guy Metcalf. She was married to Samuel Snodgrass).
The face of the woman which is glimpsed between the child held by Laura Metcalf Snodgrass is not accounted for in the Identification list for this photo.
Seated: Melvina Fawcett.

Eleanor Snodgrass was born in around November of 1897 so I think that the date of this photo is likely 1898.
